Mr. and Mrs. Darcy

When Elizabeth married Fitzwilliam (William) Darcy, she was in love, and with great expectations, buthe looked down on her. She could see it; he kept separate rooms and reserved his 'passion' for occasional nights, with the lights out. Whereas he professed to love her, he came short in demonstrating it, so Lizzie yearned for more.

Jane was already unhappy; Charles still had 'angels.' Jane had told Lizzie that Charles often came from assignations smelling of cheap perfume. Thus, she had confronted him, and he told her it wasn't for her to question him. Caroline was as hateful as ever, though Louisa was different. They were staying at Pemberley, along with his sisters. The Bingley sisters were always around, which was not optimal. Just the day before, Jane heard them talking, and learned that one of Charles' mistresses had one child with him. Apparently, the child stayed with a Bingley's relative. Jane had cried for hours since she was unable to get pregnant.

That night, the 24th of December, Elizabeth sat by the fire with Jane. In the evening, there would be a service at Pemberley's chapel and a celebration for the tenants' families. William Darcy's grandmother was a Prussian princess. The Germanic countries were full of noble families, many princes and princesses. Although titled many of them were not wealthy, so many married British nobles. At Pemberley, many German traditions were upheld, including Heiligabend (Christmas Eve, or Holy Night). Particularly this year since some of William's German relatives had come for the holidays.

"I wish that William's proud relatives were not here, a bad time to come so near my confinement. I feel as big as a house and not very comfortable, but he insisted." Lizzie confided to Jane, who held her hand. "I have not told you, but I wonder if I were blinded by love; my marriage isn't what I had hoped for," Lizzie told her sister much more.

Jane couldn't help it; she let tears roll down her cheeks. She told Lizzie of her unhappy marriage and how she was considering leaving Charles, but she didn't know how to do it. "At least you have a child. I read my settlement; if I fail to have an heir within five years, Charles will file for an annulment. His charming smiles were also for others. I think he loves someone else."

So, both sisters regretted their marriages. This was Elizabeth's second pregnancy but the first one had ended midway into her pregnancy; and now, she looked forward her baby's arrival. "I wish we could both go away." Elizabeth sighed.

William stood by the door; he had heard the sisters talking. He remembered the bitter months missing Lizzie; and how happy he had been when she accepted him. He didn't look down on her, not at all, but he was apprehensive she would find out who he was. At night, he yearned for her, but sharing a room was out of the question. When he was asleep; she might see who he was. His father had confided how Lady Anne was afraid of him after he foolishly slept with her. One of his cousins had reminded him of their 'curse.' They were there to assist him when Lizzie had their baby since there were things to be done; their secret couldn't be out.

As for Charles, William would talk to him. He would make sure Charles changed or else. One of his cousins, a wealthy German noble, also Hurst's relative, was in love with Jane. He had recently purchased an estate next to his. He could use his connections to the British monarchy to dissolve Jane's marriage.

The idea of losing Lizzie scared William. He always controlled himself around her, afraid he would show his true self during a moment of passion. Maybe his other cousin was right. "Tell her; my wife says it is not a curse; she says we are blessed. I told her during our wedding night. Do it, or you will have an unhappy marriage. Besides, she likes what we can do on our marriage bed." His very formal cousin waggled his eyebrows and laughed.

The Bingley Sisters

"Caroline, Reggie has asked me to go back home; his father is ill and asked for Reggie to be ready to take his place." Louisa looked at Caroline.

"Let that worm go alone; he lives in the countryside. He and his cousins might be nobles but behave like simple country folk. I don't care if they are German counts, or Mr. Darcy's relatives; they are not fit for the Ton. You will be miserable." Caroline looked at her sister; Louisa was wringing her hands. Caroline didn't like the changes she saw; Hurst was different, no longer ate and drank to stupor; he lost a few stones and looked handsome once again. Lately, Louisa and Reggie behaved indecently; Caroline caught them nearly undressed, hands all over each other; she 'forgot' the couple was in their private receiving room, closed doors, and she had barged in on them.

"No, I won't; I love my husband. I will be gone before the New Year. Tomorrow, we will go to Albert's estate. You may come if you wish, but know my husband comes first; I won't lose him because of either of you or Charles." Louisa saw her husband at the door of their room. She stood to greet him. In front of an angry Caroline, they embraced, and Reggie kissed her forehead.

"Good girl, don't you look lovely? I came to ask you for a walk. It shall be grand; there are a few flurries. Caroline, you are welcome to join us; my cousins, Jane, and Georgie will come along." Hurst invited her.

Caroline huffed and left the room angrily, "I hope you freeze. You behave like a wanton, " she told Louisa, standing close to her husband; Reggie had his arm on her waist.

"Lucky me," Hurst chuckled.

She went to look for Charles, who wasn't around; he was in Lambton meeting a woman married to a jealous husband. William had warned him to stay away, to respect his vows to Jane, but Charles wouldn't listen.

Caroline liked to spy on Mr. Darcy; she saw him going into his office, leaving the door open. He took his jacket off and rolled his sleeves. Someone tapped her shoulder, Georgiana Darcy. "Miss Bingley, move on. You've stood there for five minutes, " Georgie raised her voice. "I am not so sure either my brother or his wife would like it." Georgie clicked her tongue, "Tsk, Tsk."

William looked up, "Thanks darling, please close the door. Check on Lizzie, see how she is doing." He grinned.

Miss Bingley was red as a beet; she walked away, angry at the world. She had seen a plant in the conservatory that she knew would make babies come faster. She heard two maids talking. They said a tea from that plant would make babies leave quickly. She didn't understand the plant was an abortive, probably dangerous for a pregnant woman. No matter, all the same, Caroline wanted to ruin Christmas for everyone. She wanted Elizabeth miserable; she had an idea.
