Disclaimer: I don't own Peter Pan
George Darling paced the floor of the hospital. His wife, Mary was giving birth to their first child. In those days, fathers weren't allowed in the hospital room. He was praying for a boy. It wasn't that he would love a girl any less but he had no idea how to raise a girl. He thought of giving her to the orphanage if she were a girl but he knew he couldn't do that. Still, for the baby's sake, he hoped for a boy.
"Hello," a small voice said to him.
It was a little girl. She couldn't have been any older the five.
"Hi," he said with a friendly smile, "What's your name?"
"I'm Wendi," the little girl said, "My mummy is having a baby today. I'm going to be a big sister."
"That's wonderful," George replied, "Do you want a little brother or sister?"
Wendi smiled.
"I don't care," she said, "I just want mummy to be out of pain."
"Where is your daddy," George asked.
"He died last month," Wendi said, "I miss him a lot. He loved me."
"I'm sure he did. He's looking over you now. He still loves you. Death doesn't change love."
Wendi hugged George. He hugged her back.
"Mr. Darling?"
George looked up.
"It's a girl," the doctor said.
George felt a ball of nerves bubble up in his stomach.
"You're going to be a great daddy," Wendi said.
George smiled.
"Thank you Wendi," he replied.
He ran into the birthing room. Mary was holding the baby in her arms. She had obviously fallen hard for the newborn. The baby was breathtakingly beautiful.
"You did an amazing job Mary," George told his wife kissing her, "What should we name her?"
"Oh George," Mary said tiredly, "I have the perfect name. Wendy Moira Angela Darling."
"Wendy," George whispered, "It's perfect."
He took the baby gently and stared at her in amazement. This baby was perfect.
The baby started to cry. George could see Mary was asleep. He sat with the baby in his arms and rocked her. Wendy settled down after a moment.
"I didn't know I would love you so much," George whispered stroking the baby's cheek, "You're the most perfect child in the world."
He kissed her tiny forehead and put her back in her bassinet. Next, he went out to call his mother and tell her the wonderful news.
"Hello?"
"Mum," George began, "Mary had the baby. It is the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. She's perfect."
"That's wonderful dear," his mother replied, "But you know there's only one perfect person."
"Yes," George agreed, "My daughter."
