Chapter 18
Al's POV
Right now, I'm in the assistant's office filling out some paperwork as we finalize the contract for the business I came here for. Good thing that Sir Schulz isn't very prickly while negotiating, every condition he laid down was well within my expectations so I'm not at a disadvantage in this deal – not that I'd expect a wealthy house such as Bielefeld to hand out an unfair contract.
As we finish the last of the paperwork, Sir Schulz put them aside and invited me to check out a room.
"Huh? A room? Why?" I asked, surprised. I thought that all I need to do was negotiate and get the paperwork done.
"Even if we're done with the paperwork now, you will still need to discuss it with the lord himself. At the end of the day, I am but an assistant. I do not have the authority to use the family seal and sign the documents myself." he explained to me as we walk in the hallways.
"Oh, right… But still, why do I need the room?" I still don't get it.
"Well, the lords and young lady are still probably discussing the youngest lord's situation amongst themselves. And I doubt it will finish soon. I also somewhat heard the voice of Lord Waltorana arriving not too long ago, probably hysterical about the situation. In that case, I think it will be a very long discussion among them. I can't leave you in the parlor for hours, and I can't entertain you with all the work to be done. Giving you a room to stay would be the best choice for now. I hope that is fine with you." he explained further.
"Ahh… of course. It's a very serious matter, Lord Wolfram's circumstance is very complicated and I'm sure that it would be the concern that the family would prioritize. I'm willing to wait." I replied in earnest.
A few more chats as we walked, we arrived in front of a guest room.
"Well then, I hope you can rest here comfortably and feel free to tell us if you need anything. Just pull on the rope by the bed and a maid will come. Please excuse me." Sir Schulz said, nodding courteously at me.
"Yes, thank you. I'll make myself comfortable then." I said as I entered the room.
I couldn't help but raise my eyebrows when I saw the room. I mean, I knew that they were one of the wealthiest families in Shin Makoku, but even their guest room is fancier than the master's bedroom of our house… and this isn't even their main residence.
I approached the door, leading to what I assumed would be the adjacent bathroom. I opened it, and yes it was a bathroom. I closed the bathroom door and looked around the room for anything I can distract myself while I wait indefinitely for anyone to call for me in case we would go through the paperwork then.
I saw a few books stacked near the study table by the windows. There are only three of them, but I guess it's better than nothing. Looking at the titles of the book, my eyebrows furrowed. I don't know who was the guest that last used this room. But that person sure has a specific taste in books.
'Stealing the Cold Duke's Wife' was the title of the first book. The cover was a deep maroon with a pattern of roses. It was thick, almost three inches - not including the covers.
'Running Away With The Enemy Country's Vicious General' book on the other hand has a bright red cover with a nice golden border.
'A Steamy Night With The Lord's Rebel Son' was the title of the last book and it still has a bookmark. Did the previous guest not finish reading this book? I opened on the page where the bookmark was on to see what part the previous reader stopped on. Page 67…
I started to read.
'My lord, please let me… this sweet spot.' I said as my hands traveled down the young master's torso, down his to bottom, letting one of my finger enter –'
WHAT THE HECK!? I quickly closed the book from the surprise and embarrassment. Yep, the last guest truly has a unique taste. I laughed nervously and slowly looked at the mirror – seeing my tomato red face and slightly shaking hands.
Oh, with that kind of book, I'm pretty sure the previous person who borrowed the book would not leave until they finish the book. More like, they finished the book once… and then went back to the 'steamy' chapters and read them again and again.
Maybe I'm better off sleeping than entertaining myself with such books. I'm already beet red after one sentence… I put the books down and slowly walked to the bed.
Or… or maybe if I start the book from the start, and understand the story build-up, I wouldn't be as embarrassed? After all, I don't know how long I will be here for. And… and maybe the book has a very good plot, it's just that the part I've read was the only chapter with that situation. Yeah… one must not judge so easily. You never know. This person was a guest of the Bielefelds… surely, they have good, exquisite taste when it comes to literature. I just need to appreciate it.
Well, at least that's the reasoning I told myself. But I was actually also curious about that chapter.
I went back to the desk and grabbed the books and brought them with me to the bed. The first one I attempted to read was the one I opened previously. I'm already spoiled of what's gonna happen, might as well read it first and quench my curiosity.
Wolfram's POV
Well, that was a lengthy conversation… It took much longer than expected when my uncle arrived. He was crazed. Not that I blame him for his reaction. If I were to find out in the future that Greta got pregnant unexpectedly and unmarried as well. I would also be fuming.
It's almost time for lunch now. And I managed to sneak away from my families' presence. I was getting tired anyway. I was planning to visit the library when I suddenly remembered about Al. I haven't apologized to him for how my father almost decked him in the face. I turned around and went in the opposite direction, towards the assistant's office.
I knocked on the door, but didn't wait for a reply to open it. There sitting in front of the desk was Sir Schulz.
"Oh, youngest master. I was just filling out some papers. What brings you here?' he asked me, setting down the paper he was holding.
"I was wondering if Al was still here. But I guess not." I said as I looked around, not finding anyone else in the office.
"He is in the guestroom in the east wing, my lord. First door to the right." he said with a smile.
"Got it, thanks!" I replied as I close the door.
Making my way towards the guest rooms, I passed by a maid with a tray of snacks.
"Oh, excuse me. Is that tray going to be delivered somewhere?" I asked.
"Greetings, youngest lord." the maid bowed. "These were supposed to be brought to the young lady but she said that she doesn't want them anymore as it will be lunch time soon. She told me to just bring them back to the kitchen"
"Then please take those with me to the guest's room. Better than it going to waste" I said.
"Yes, my lord." the maid said and followed me to where Al was staying.
I knocked on the door, then heard a loud thud.
"Hey, are you okay there?" I hurriedly opened the door only to find him scrambling on the floor, beet red.
"Oh! Lord Wolfram. Haha, what brings you here?" he asked in a funny, kinda nervous tone.
Then my eyes wandered to the books on the bed that he not so successfully hid. He panicked and tried to cover them with the blanket.
"No, wait! You're misunderstanding something!" he defended.
"Don't worry, Al. I don't judge people by their taste in books." I said, teasing him. The maid behind me was also blushing – seemingly aware of the content of those books.
Waltorana's POV
"So… are you going to contact Blood Pledge Castle?" I asked my brother.
"I… I don't know. My son wants to start over with a clean slate. I don't think he wants to see them, he even ran away from there. Seeing as how he went here, he thinks that this place is his safe space and I don't want to betray him and his expectations of me." he said.
"Yeah, if he only ran away, that's fine and all. But he's pregnant. With the Maou's child at that!" I said. "It would have been a better circumstance if he's pregnant with another mazoku's child. Then we can just say that we're breaking the engagement since he's been unfaithful to the maou, making Wolfram stay here in Bielefeld indefinitely as his punishment. Then we wouldn't have to deal with a dilemma like this."
"It would really fix everyone's problem if someone just smack the Maou's head again so hard that all his forgotten memories come back. Trust me, I would do it if he ever steps on this house." his face darkening and his fists clenching. I sighed deeply, knowing that my brother would definitely beat the Maou to death the moment he laid his eyes on him.
"Brother, we have to do something… Wolfram's belly will only get bigger. We can't have his children be illegitimate! He's the heir to the Bielefeld lands, naturally, his eldest children will be his successors too!" I tried to reason. I know that Wolfram doesn't want to meet the Maou or talk to anyone from the capital, but he can't cloud his judgment too much for the sake of his children.
My brother began massaging between his brows while letting out another sigh. And the sight of it is also going to give me a headache. Arghhh! Why did such a pain happen?!
