The Great War

'All that bloodshed, crimson clover. Uh-huh, the bombs were close and my hand was the one you reached for. All throughout the Great War'

CHAPTER SIX

The girls had walked on ahead, honing their skills, on the look out for some demons they could take their frustrations out on. Buffy and Spike hung back a little letting the girls lead the charge.

They walked in silence for the most part. Before Spike struck up the courage to speak to Buffy.

"So the girls… how's all that going?" He asked

"Good… they're a good bunch of girls. Eager to learn" Buffy shrugged

"And how was Rome?" He asked

"Rome?" She responded, confused

"Yeah I heard you were in Rome" he told her

"Oh the body doubles… turns out when you make a whole army of Slayers you become public enemy number one in the demon world" she told him

"Right…" he nodded

"So you and Angel working together… how's that?" She asked

"Has its ups and downs"

"I can imagine" she smiled

"He needed me here" said Spike

Buffy nodded "I did not have this on my bingo card… you and Angel working together"

"It's not been without its challenges…"

Buffy stopped walking "Spike… I just wanna know one thing"

"Fire away Slayer"

"In the Hellmouth, when it was all coming down. I told you…"

"That I'd done enough and that I should come with you" he said softly

"Yeah… and… that I-"

Buffy was cut off by the sound of the girls screaming. Buffy and Spike ran to catch up with them. It was a group of vampires that had been feeding on some poor souls that couldn't get to shelter in time.

Buffy blocked a punch that was heading for one of her girls by kicking the vampire in the head. Before moving on to the next.

"Spike!" Buffy called out to him throwing him a spare stake. He reached out and caught it effortlessly and staked a vampire with it.

The girls had made light work of the vamps but Buffy and Spike seemed to be enjoying trading blows with their vamps. The girls watched on in amazement as the two blondes fought together with such smoothness and precision. They were back in their same old dance.

The two of them dusted their vampires at the same time.

"How did you do that?" Asked Rosa

"Do what?" Asked Buffy

"You were so in sync! Like every move!" Said Rosa with her mouth open in awe

"We fought together for a long time" shrugged Buffy

"When you fight side by side with somebody for so long you pick up their style. You know what moves they'll make before they even do it" Spike explained

"And how long have you guys been apart? You can just fall back into it that easily?" asked Elizabeth

"It's second nature I guess" said Buffy

"It was awesome" said Lisa

The girls walked on ahead again, all of them exchanging stories that they'd heard through the grapevine about Buffy and Spike.

"Girl I was there in Sunnydale and they definitely had the hots for each other" said one girl loudly

Spike stifled a grin "The tales of Buffy and Spike eh?"

"Almost like a modern day Romeo and Juliet" said Buffy

"That doesn't have a happy ending you know" Spike reminded her

"Neither did we" said Buffy walking on leaving him behind

Buffy arrived back at the Hyperion. Most of the girls sat around chatting excitedly about their patrol that night. She spotted Angel going into the office and followed him.

"Hey you" she said closing the door

"Hey" he smiled

"Sorry I didn't check in with you before…"

"It's okay. You and Spike had things you needed to hash out" said Angel sitting at the desk

Buffy sat in the seat in front of him "I'm sorry about Cordy and Fred and Wesley…"

"Thanks"

"God Angel you should've called me, I could've helped, I could've sent some girls to help" Buffy told him

"I didn't want to drag you into this" said Angel

"And yet here I am… Giles told me and I freaking teleported here… you should have called me" she said sadly

"I thought you couldn't trust me?" said Angel

"What?"

"Andrew… when he came to pick up Dana he told me that none of you trusted me"

"I had no idea Angel, if I did don't you think I'd have been here sooner?" said Buffy

They were interrupted by a young guy bursting through the door "Dad!"

"Dad?" Buffy's brow knitted in confusion

The young man hugged Angel tightly.

"Wait… Dad?" said Buffy

"Buffy this is my son… Connor" Angel smiled

"Oh my god" said Buffy

"Pleased to meet you Buffy" Connor smiled

"Okay… backup Son? Dad? What?" Buffy asked

"It's a long story" said Angel

Willow had just gotten off the phone with Giles

"Any news?" asked Buffy

"There's something… a spell… I'm not sure I could do it by myself. It's huge" said Willow

"So we need another witch?" asked Buffy

"Giles is on his way" said Willow

"Wow the Watcher is coming to town" scoffed Spike

"He's gathering some things and heading this way" said Willow

"He's teleporting?" asked Buffy

"Yeah, Althenea taught him on his last trip to Devon. He's been dying to try it" said Willow
