The revelation that Nina was the one who reported Carly and Drew to the SEC results in Nina once again being on bad terms with Willow, Michael, Carly, and the rest of the family. While dealing with the blow of losing her fragile relationship with Willow, Nina gets a phone call from someone who sounds like Nelle, but the connection is bad and therefore Nina isn't able to make out what the person on the phone is saying, and they hang up before Nina can respond. Nina decides to go to Nelle's grave. When she gets there, she finds that someone has spray painted graffiti of a broken heart on the headstone. Nina's phone is dead, so she goes back to her office to report the vandalism. She then returns to the grave to find that the heart is gone! She's reprimanded for making a false report, but she insists that she isn't making it up.

A few days later, she gets another phone call, and goes to the grave again to find the heart necklace on top of the headstone! Not wanting to get her fingerprints all over the necklace, Nina leaves it there and goes back to her car, making the critical error of not taking a picture of it. Instead of calling the police, she calls Willow and asks if she left the heart necklace. Willow angrily tells her that she had given the necklace to Sasha a long time ago while she was in the hospital with her cancer, and had told her to get rid of it for her, and if there is indeed a necklace, it's a fake. Nina then calls Sasha, who tells Nina that she didn't end up getting rid of the necklace, thinking Willow might eventually change her mind at some point and want it back. However, when she was packing up her stuff to move out of the apartment, she couldn't find it, and had concluded that Gladys must have stolen it in order to pawn it off. Nina goes to back Nelle's grave to find that the necklace has disappeared, and is mad at herself for not taking a picture of it.

Nina gets yet another phone call a few days later. Going back to the grave, she finds that it has been spray painted again, this time with the message "Every day is a new dawn." Nina takes a picture of the graffiti and calls the police again. However, by the time they show up, the graffiti, not surprisingly, has disappeared. Nina insists that she's not making it up, and shows them the picture. They check the security cameras and see that someone had indeed spraypainted graffiti on the headstone, then returned a while later and washed it off. The person of course is wearing a mask and gloves, so they can't see who it is. Nina insists that Nelle is alive and demands that the grave be exhumed for a DNA test, as they hadn't done a DNA test when they found the body. Chase explains that the body had already been identified as Nelle, as the person was wearing the clothes that Nelle was wearing the night she fell off the cliff, as well as carrying the fake ID Nelle had made with the alias of Barbara Langdon. Nina doesn't back down, and eventually gets the authorization for the grave to be exhumed.

A DNA test is done, which shows that Nina does not share any DNA with the body. Chase tells Nina that these results mean that Janelle was not her daughter after all. Not convinced, Nina demands that Willow get a DNA test. Willow says that there is no need for a DNA test since Carly already had one done behind her back, which proved that Willow was her daughter, but Nina ruined any chance they had of reconciling. Nina tells Willow that she is asking for a test to see if the person whose body they found is Willow's relative. Willow reluctantly agrees to get a DNA test if it means that Nina will shut up about it, regardless of the results. The test results show that Willow does not share any DNA with the body, which everyone deems as sufficient proof that Nelle was not Nina's daughter. Still not convinced, Nina insists that Wiley get a DNA test and promises that if the test shows that Wiley shares DNA with the body, she will accept that Nelle was not her daughter. Michael and Willow agree to have Wiley get a DNA test, and the results show that Wiley does NOT share any DNA with the body!

Now convinced that something isn't right, Willow wants to see if she's biologically related to Wiley. Wiley's DNA is compared with both Willow's and Nina's, and the results show that Willow and Nina do indeed share the right percentages of DNA with Wiley to be his aunt and grandmother respectively, finally confirming that Willow and Nelle were indeed sisters. However, the fact that no one shares any DNA with the body means that it's very likely Nelle is alive. Carly remembers how Nelle tried to make it seem like Morgan was alive, how she insisted that Carly pushed her down the stairs, and how, after Nelle's "death," the detective seemed a little too determined to put Carly away for murder. Most likely, Nelle's "death" was another attempt at framing Carly. Carly, while not forgetting about everything Nina has put her through over the past couple of years, agrees to not interfere in any way with the search for Nelle, and cooperate with the renewed investigation into the events leading up to Nelle falling off the cliff.
