I'm back on Tuchunka. It has been over a month since the service. The council gave a public service a week after the private one. It was a very… generous show of good will. It was the least they could do, afterall how many tax dollars Shepard saved the council. All of them in fact. Except mine of course. The funeral was very nice, although they had to turn it into a thing in order to win the crowd's approval. It is a funeral, not a campaign speech. Udina was awfully chummy with the asari councilor and tried to cozy up with the salarian one. I sensed tension between him and his other councilors, except Anderson.
Wrex is absent from the clan. He should be back in a few weeks. He's trying to unite the clans to strengthen the krogan for the upcoming reaper attack. Nearly all krogan are pissed at him for destroying the genophage cure, despite it meant giving up their future. He's still trying. Wrex won't give up hope. Wrex is centuries older than I was and lives in some pretty terrible conditions, yet despite all that he still hasn't given up on his people. I admire people who'll do what I couldn't.
Not much has changed at the clan. I'm halfway done with cleaning the camp then will need to find something else to do. I'm thinking about whittling. It will be getting colder soon according to others. Winter is fast approaching. I have to prepare for a freezing wait for it… fifty degrees Fahrenheit. The horror. I used to sleep with the window open when it was below freezing. Krogan must really hate the cold.
The other krogan are off. It's quiet when I'm around them. They aren't usually like this. No disgusting insults, bottles being thrown at me, or stalling my work, nothing. They must have finally gotten bored. I see Eukark drinking. He's the friendliest krogan aside from Wrex, though he'll never show it. While others were busy, Eukark pulled me aside and asked how I was. He lost his brother a couple decades ago, not a long time for krogan and understood somewhat what I was going through. I thanked him and told him I needed a distraction.
"Hpmh, I might need a break, this is getting exhausting" I said to myself. I drop the boulder to catch my breath. Eukark gets up and leaves the bar. I lift the rock and walk back to my cabin. As I leave the camp, I feel the strong sunlight warm my skin. Some days I like it, some I wish it was cooler. I try to work more on cloudy days, those are rare days. I made it back to the cabin. The walls are nearly finished. I should go out and find some dead fallen trees to drag back and work on framing the roof. The boulders I collect now are for a rock fence I'll one day build. I drop the rock off at my pile. Then another rock is tossed on top. Surprised I turn around and see Eukark.
I ask "What are you doing?"
"It's my clan too. At least one Krogan should have helped cleaned it up" he said.
"You don't have to do this" I said.
"I know. I want to" he said.
I raise my finger and point to him "for that you are getting the cabin in my will, and if I leave a body, put me in the ground and plant a tree over my corpse."
"Ha, thanks but I don't need it. Come on I'll help you with the rest" nice I got an assistant, crap I'll need to pay him. Under the table. I'm not letting the government take his wages.
Eukark and I headed back and with his help, we hauled away some of the larger rocks I was having difficulty moving on my own. My original plan was to leave them and decorate it somehow, so they weren't an eyesore. It will be nice to have the space. After a few more trips back and forth, the most amazing thing happened. Other krogan joined us. More and more until the whole clan was cleaning. It took less than a day for the entire camp to be cleaned. When the last boulder was on the very large pile, all the dust swept. There was nothing more to do.
"Now what?" someone asked.
Oh I got a team.
"If you guys want to put in the work, I have some ideas."
