It was an early morning and Maura and Jane were getting ready for work. Only getting ready now entailed lengthy make out sessions. 5 months in and they still could not keep their hands off of each other.
Jane had Maura pinned against her kitchen counter, heatedly kissing her. Maura was giving as good as she got, her hands tangled in Jane's thick curls. Jane grabbed Maura's hips, ready to hoist her onto the counter when they heard the back door open. Jane and Maura quickly broke apart and started busying themselves with mundane tasks - Jane grabbing a mug and pouring some coffee, Maura reaching for the newspaper on island.
"Good morning, girls," Angela greeted.
"Hey, Ma," Jane replied. She took a sip of her coffee to hide her kiss swollen lips.
Maura kept her head down, hiding behind her hair, pretending to read.
"Maura, you okay?" Angela asked.
Maura looked up. "Yes, I'm just very invested in this, uh, in this-"
Thankfully, Maura was saved by the ringing of her and Jane's phones.
"Rizzoli"
"Isles"
They answered in tandem.
"Yeah I'll be right there." Jane hung up the phone and then addressed her mother. "Sorry, Ma. We got a body. Gotta go. Let's go, Maura." Jane grabbed Maura's arm and practically dragged her out of the house.
...
"You really had to invite my mother to stay in your guest house?" Jane said as soon as they got into her car.
"It was the right thing to do. She had nowhere else to go."
"Does it feel like the right thing now? We get caught almost daily."
"Well maybe it's time that we tell her."
"No, no way. I'm so not ready to tell my mother about us."
"Why? Is it me? Do you think she won't approve?"
"No, it's not that. Ma loves you. It's… you know I don't wanna talk about this right now. I just don't think it's the right time to tell her."
...
Jane and Maura had decided to spend the night at Jane's to avoid being interrupted by Angela. It had bothered Maura all day that Jane didn't want to tell her mother about them. She had been gathering her courage to bring it up again.
They were relaxing on the couch. Jane was watching a Red Sox game while Maura was reading one of her science journals. Jane's arm was casually over Maura's shoulders and Maura's head was resting comfortably on Jane. Maura looked up at Jane and thought now might be a good time to try and talk again.
"Jane?" Maura started. "Can we talk about why you don't want to tell your mother about us?"
Jane looked down at Maura and saw how important this conversation was to her. She didn't mean to be dismissive this morning, it just wasn't a conversation she wanted to have on the way to a crime scene.
Jane turned off the tv, removed her arm from over Maura's shoulders, and turned to face Maura, sitting crisis cross on the couch.
"Yeah. And look I'm sorry about this morning. I didn't mean to make it seem like I'm ashamed of you. I'm not. I love you. It's just my family." Jane took a deep breath before she continued.
"I've known that I like women since I was little. And growing up catholic I was always taught that being gay was wrong. My pop, he never approved of it. He always made comments about how disgusting it was. I tried to tell my parents when I was like 12. I wanted to ask out this girl, Emily, to the dance. I asked my parents if it was okay if I took her as my date. My pop got so mad. I ended up being grounded and not allowed to go to the dance. Ma never said anything. She just let it happen. After that I forced myself to date boys. I would've done anything to make sure pop was proud of me. Now that he's gone I don't really know how Ma feels."
"And Frankie and Tommy? Do they know?"
"Yeah they do. They knew I liked Emily. They felt bad for me when I couldn't go with her to the dance."
"I understand, Jane." Maura said as she took Jane's hands in her own. "I will wait as long as you need. I'm not in a rush to tell anyone. We'll just have to be more careful when we stay at my place."
"Thank you." Jane leaned in and kissed Maura firmly, conveying all of her love in one touch.
...
Two days later Jane and Maura were spending their afternoon off at Maura's. They had started out watching a documentary, but somewhere along the way had ended up horizontal on Maura's couch. Jane's hand were wildly roaming over Maura's body, tangling in her hair as they kissed. Maura was moaning from enjoyment. Everything was great until they heard the front door open.
Jane practically pushed Maura off of her and shot straight up. Maura wiped her mouth and turned to see Angela walking in the door. Jane threw her head back onto the back of the couch in frustration.
"Hey girls," Angela greeted, as she walked in the door with her arms full of bags.
"Hello, Angela. What do you have here?" Maura responded.
"I just did a little shopping. Something to spice up my life a little."
Maura got up off the couch and walked into the kitchen for a bottle of water.
"What are you girls up to?" Angela asked.
"Uh, we were just watching this movie. Um…" Jane looked back at Maura, her eyes pleading for help when she couldn't remember what they were watching.
"It's a documentary about animals in Africa." Maura saved Jane.
"Oh, interesting. Well, I'm going to go put these things away. I'll see you girls later." Angela said as she headed for the door.
As soon as she heard the door close, Jane got up off the couch and walked over to Maura in the kitchen. "What the hell? How does this keep happening?"
"You know it's going to happen every time we're here. Unless you stop kissing me."
"Which will never happen in a million years," Jane said as she leaned in for another kiss, which quickly got heated.
The back door opened and Angela walked back into the house. Jane and Maura quickly pulled themselves apart again at the sound of the door. Jane busied herself by looking out the window and Maura gazed at the floor. Angela stood staring at them.
"I know." Angela said.
"What?" Maura asked. Jane spun around to look at her mother.
"Do you think I'm blind? Every time I walk in here I see you two quickly step apart and act like nothing's happening. I know you two are dating."
"Uh. Are we really that obvious?" Jane asked.
"Yes! You two are terrible at hiding this! I mean I keep walking in here and interrupting you hoping you'll say something."
"Wait, so you've been purposefully interrupting us?" Jane asked, mouth gaping.
"Yes. Well actually the first time was an accident and the second, but then when you still hadn't told me, I figured maybe if I caught you enough times you'd have to tell me."
"And you're okay with this?" Maura asked.
"Yes! Why wouldn't I be? I love you Maura. I already think of you as a daughter."
"I always thought you'd have a hard time with it you know because of pop and the church." Jane said.
"I just want you to be happy. And if you're happy with Maura, then I'm happy too." Angela smiled wide and pulled both girls in for a hug. She gave each of them a kiss on the forehead and then left, finally satisfied that the truth was out.
"Well, that was…" Maura started.
"Weird? Yeah." Jane finished. "But at least now we can do this," Jane placed a kiss on Maura's lips. "All we want." Maura smiled and kissed Jane back.
