A/N: This chapter is just fluffy fun. I wanted to do Jane's birthday without Hoyt trying to kill her (even though that episode is really good).

And here's my usual reminder that I do not own Rizzoli and Isles. On with the show!

...

It was midmorning and Maura was perched on a stool at her kitchen counter while Angela made coffee. Maura was leafing through a catalog when she sighed loudly.

"Angela, do you have suggestions for a birthday present for Jane?" Maura asked.

Angela turned around, two cups of steaming hot coffee in her hands. She set one down in front of Maura and then leaned against the counter.

"Oprah says you should give to charity." Angela responded.

"Not exactly the romantic gesture I was going for, but it could work." Maura said.

"Not unless you give Jane the tax deduction." Angela added.

"I'm usually quite good at giving gifts, but I'm suddenly feeling like everything I think of is not good enough for her." Maura was becoming frustrated.

"Well, of course. You're not her best friend anymore. You're her girlfriend. And this is the first birthday you're spending together since you started dating. It's normal to feel like nothing is good enough." Angela placed her hand on Maura's shoulder in comfort.

"I just wish she would tell me what she wants. Then I could get it for her and I could stop buying every item in the catalog."

"Oh is that what's in those boxes?" Angela asked, walking towards a pile of boxes near the couch. She picked a headband like device off the top of pile. "Why does Jane need a sleep coach?"

Maura stood up and walked over to where Angela was standing. She grabbed the headband out of Angela's hand. "It measures REM... rapid eye movement." Maura put the device around her head. "See, you just wear this while you sleep, and it calculates your sleep cycles."

"She'll never get married. Send it back."

"I would still marry her if she wore this." Maura said as she took the device off her head and dropped it back onto the pile.

"Well I'm gonna tell ya, Maura, Jane will never wear that."

"Perhaps you're right. I'll keep looking."

"Okay, well, I'm going to the party store. We're gonna have a surprise party. And I'm gonna celebrate even if Jane doesn't like to."

"I'll see you later, Angela. Thank you."

"Good luck." Angela said as she headed out the door.

...

That night Maura and Jane were enjoying a relaxing evening on Maura's couch. Both women had glasses of wine and were cuddled up together under a blanket watching a documentary on TV. Jane turned to look at Maura. She stared at Maura's radiance for a moment before she asked the question she had on her mind most of the night.

"Hey, so what's in the boxes?"

Maura turned her attention to Jane and sighed. "I've been trying to find a suitable birthday present for you."

"Looks like you found 90." Jane joked.

"No, none of them are... right." Maura said dejectedly.

"Okay..." Jane said, very confused by Maura's tone.

"Save me the agony of flipping through catalogs and websites and tell me what you want?" Maura asked.

"A horse." Jane said seriously.

"Really?" Maura tried to hide her laugh.

"Yes. A thoroughbred. And I'll name him Walter. And he can live here, in your backyard, and I'll ride him every day to work."

"A lot of people wouldn't put up with your abuse."

"Yes, well, I know you love me so..."

"I do. I do love you." Maura leaned in for a kiss and Jane happily obliged. "Which is why finding a gift for you has been so hard. Nothing seems good enough."

"Okay, don't get me anything. Pretend it's not my birthday. I hate my birthday." Jane groaned.

"Why?"

"It just... it never turns out the way I imagined it."

"And you don't like to be disappointed." Maura stated.

"Yeah."

"Well, then you'll probably hate that your mother is throwing you a surprise party here."

"That I already knew. She's not the best at surprises."

They sat in comfortable silence for a minute before Jane spoke again.

"Maybe this year my birthday won't be so bad, though. I have you. I can never be disappointed as long as you're there."

"I love you. So much." Maura said as she leaned in for another kiss.

"I love you too." Jane replied.

...

The night of Jane's birthday, Maura took her out for a fancy dinner. They drank wine and ate cake and Jane was so grateful to have someone as sweet and thoughtful as Maura in her life.

The walked up to Maura's front door a little drunk – on both wine and love. Maura fumbled to get her key in the door. They both knew what was waiting on the other side. As soon as Maura got the door open, their friends and family were yelling "Surprise!"

Jane put on her best shocked expression as she entered. The kitchen and living room of Maura's place was filled with balloons – rainbow ones. Rainbow cutouts were even taped to the walls.

"What, is this my birthday or a coming out party?" Jane asked jokingly. She walked into the kitchen and wrapped Angela in an embrace. "Thank you, Ma."

"Happy birthday, Janie." Angela said.

"Happy birthday, sis!" Frankie said as he gave Jane a hug.

Jane continued greeting her friends – Korsak, Frost, and even Suzie. Maura had slipped away to grab something and was reentering the room as Jane was finishing her greetings. Jane turned around to see Maura standing behind her with a box wrapped in colorful polka dot paper with a pink bow on top.

"This looks a lot smaller than Walter the thoroughbred." Jane stated.

"I hope you like them." Maura said nervously.

Jane tore it open and dug through the paper. She pulled out a red shoe. "They're... driving shoes."

"Racing shoes." Maura corrected. "They're fully lined with fire resistant Dupont Nomex."

"And I need these because...?" Jane asked.

Maura handed Jane an envelope. Jane opened it up. "Racing school!? You're sending me to racing school!?"

"Well, you, know, Walter's highest speed is 40 miles per hour. And the Lamborghini Murciélago LP60's highest speed is 211."

Jane pulled Maura into a hug.

"Do you like it?" Maura asked.

"Yes! Yes! I love it! I love you." Jane placed her arm that wasn't holding the gift box on Maura's back and pulled her in for a kiss.

"Happy birthday, Jane. I love you." Maura said.

...

Once the party was over and the house was cleaned up, Jane settled herself into Maura's bed. Maura came padding into the room in her bare feet, holding something behind her back. Jane, always the good detective, noticed.

"Whatcha got there?" Jane asked.

"I know that I've already given you a present, but I have something else for you."

"Maur, you already gave me the best present. What else could there be?"

Maura sat down on the side of the bed in front of Jane. She took the box from behind her back and handed it to her girlfriend. "Open it"

Jane lifted the lid off the box and looked inside. "It's a key."

"It's your key. To the house. To... our house. Jane, will you move in with me?"

Jane looked at Maura with wide eyes and for a second Maura worried Jane would say no. But that worry was erased the second Jane's face broke into a wide smile. Jane leaned forward and planted a firm kiss on Maura's lips. Maura hummed in pleasure and missed the contact the second Jane pulled away.

"Yes! Yes, of course I'll move in with you! I spend all my time here anyway."

Jane placed her hand on Maura's knee and looked deep into her eyes. "This has been the best birthday ever. Better than I ever expected."

Maura leaned in and kissed Jane. "I love you. I'm so glad I could make this birthday special for you."

"How're you gonna top it next year?" Jane asked.

"Hmmm... I'm sure I'll think of something. Now, are you ready for your next present?" Maura's voice had turned seductive.

"There's more?" Jane asked, raising an eyebrow, knowing exactly where this was going.

"Mmmhmm." Maura took the box with the key out of Jane's hand and placed it on the nightstand. Then she straddled Jane's body and hovered her mouth over Jane's. "This is the best one. Me." Maura kissed Jane and they both knew neither of them was going to get any sleep tonight.
