A/N: Hello everyone! Sorry I've been MIA. Work has been kicking my ass. But I'm trying to get back into the flow of writing.

So without further a do here is my take on 2x15 Burning Down the House.

I do not own Rizzoli and Isles (though sometimes I wish I did).

Enjoy!

...

Maura and Jane were in the kitchen making breakfast. Maura was fretting over the espresso machine - trying to make the perfect cup of espresso for her mother. Jane was at the coffee pot making her regular ole cup of joe. Jane could see that Maura was tense.

"Maura, it's fine." Jane said.

"She's going to be here any minute. I want to make sure she has the perfect cup of espresso."

"She isn't going to care about the coffee. She's going to care about seeing you."

Maura was fiddling with the coffee grounds in the portafilter when the door opened. Constance and Angela walked in.

"Good morning" Constance greeted.

Maura's concentration was broken and she dropped what she was holding, spilling coffee grounds all over the counter.

"Damn it" Maura swore, but she had a smile on her face.

Constance walked over to Maura and pulled her in for a hug. Their relationship had become stronger since Maura came out. She owed a lot of that to Jane, who values family so much she makes Maura call her mother at least once a month.

"Hello, Darling." Constance said.

"Hello, mother." Maura replied.

Jane and Angela stood on the far side of the kitchen, by the fridge, watching. Jane was sipping her coffee.

"That's all you, isn't it?" Angela whispered.

"Mmhmm" Jane responded as she took another sip of her coffee.

Constance released Maura and turned her attention to Jane.

"Jane, it's good to see you again."

"You too. I'm so glad that you had time to come out and visit. We're both really happy you're here."

"Yes, yes we are." Maura added.

Before anyone could continue the conversation both Jane and Maura's phones began to ring. They answered in their usual "Rizzoli." "Isles."

Maura hung up first and addressed her mother. "I'm sorry. We have to go to work. A factory caught fire early this morning."

"We'll be fine." Angela assured. She was looking forward to getting to know Maura's mother. She was pretty sure they'd be family one day with the way things were going.

"Jane and I will see you at dinner, tonight." Maura said.

"Yes. I'm looking forward to it." Constance responded.

Jane and Maura headed out the door to their next crime scene.

...

After a long day of crime solving Jane and Maura had gone to their planned dinner with Maura's mother. They all enjoyed a wonderful meal and meaningful conversation. Jane was overjoyed to see Maura spending time with her mother. She knew that Maura envied the bond between Angela and herself, so she was proud that she was able to give Maura that relationship now.

Dinner had concluded and Jane had insisted on paying. She told Maura and Constance to go ahead while she stayed and paid the tab. Jane wanted to give them a little alone time since it was so rare for Maura to see her mother.

Maura and Constance left the restaurant arm in arm, laughing.

"Your father never lets me eat garlic – never!" Constance said.

"I'm glad you liked it." Maura replied.

"It's delightful just being able to see you. I wish we'd done this more."

"Come to see me? Me too.

"No. I wish... I wish that I had stopped being busy and... just enjoyed you."

"Stop, mom, it's okay."

"No, It's not. It's really true that your life gets lived while you're doing other things. Lucky for me, my daughter has a wonderful girlfriend who knows how to intervene and fix things."

Maura chuckled. "Yes, Jane is very good at that. Come on, let's head back to car and wait for Jane there."

Maura and her mother began to cross the street. They heard tires screeching and turned their heads to see bright headlights shining in their faces. A speeding car was heading right at them. Constance screamed and pushed Maura out the way. Maura landed on the ground between two parked cars with a thud. Constance was less lucky, and was struck by the car. Jane pushed open the door the restaurant and exited to see Maura hit the ground.

"Maura!" she screamed as she ran toward her girlfriend.

The car that hit Constance braked hard and Constance tumbled to the ground, unconscious. The car backed up and stopped in front of Maura and Jane. Jane looked up but couldn't see anything through the tinted windows. It then sped off into the night.

"Maura. Maura, look at me." Jane said as she rubbed Maura's back.

Maura slowly sat up, dazed. She took in her surroundings for a second before she turned to look out into the street.

"Mom!" Maura shouted. She stood up gingerly, Jane holding her hand to steady her.

"Maura stay here." Jane instructed as she began to head towards Constance.

"No!" Maura screamed. She began run towards her mother. When she reached her, she knelt down and listened for a heartbeat. Jane stood behind her and dialed 911. Maura sobbed and then sat up. "She's alive!" She shouted to Jane.

...

An ambulance had come and taken Maura's mother to the hospital. They wouldn't let Maura go with her so Jane drove them, as fast as she could without lights and siren, to the hospital. Maura refused to be looked at at first, until Jane told her she wouldn't be able to stop worrying unless she was checked. Maura obliged.

Now Maura was sitting in a hospital corridor waiting for news from the doctor. Her mother was in surgery and Maura was terrified. Jane came over carrying two cups of coffee. She handed one to Maura.

"Here. I think we're gonna need this."

"No, I can't"

"Maura, you gotta drink something. You've been crying for hours, you're gonna get dehydrated"

"He just drove into her, and then he left her." Maura sobbed.

"I know." Jane said as she sat down next to Maura. She placed the coffees on the floor and then pulled Maura into a hug. "I know."

"She pushed me out of the way, Jane. My mother saved my life."

"I know." Jane placed a gentle kiss to the crown of Maura's head.

The doctor appeared then and Maura bolted out of her seat and over to her to get some answers.

"How is she?" Maura asked apprehensively.

"It was a severe open book pelvic fracture, just like you thought." The doctor explained.

"Okay. Uh, and how's the bleeding?"

"We performed an anterior pelvic open reduction and internal fixation."

"And the head and the cervical CTS?"

"There's some cranial bleeding, but we're doing all that we can, Dr. Isles."

"I know you are. Thank you, doctor."

"You're welcome. Just hold on."

The doctor turned around and headed back down the halls to tend to more patients. Maura turned to Jane.

"Oh, god, what if she dies?" Maura sobbed. Jane rushed over and wrapped Maura into a secure hug.

"It's okay. I'm here" Jane whispered into Maura's hair.

"My father's in Tanzania. Even if I could reach him it would take him two days to get here."

"Maura, she's not gonna die. She's not." Jane reassured.

A beeping sounded from Jane's pocket. She grabbed her phone and checked her messages.

"It's Frost. He's already working on the hit and run reenactment."

"Go."

"No. I need to stay with you."

"Go. Go and do what you do better than anyone I know. Find the bastard who did this. Please."

"Okay." Jane complied. She kissed Maura on the forehead. "I love you. Call me if you need me."

Maura sniffled and nodded solemnly. Jane headed toward the elevator, never fully taking her eyes off Maura until the doors closed.

...

Jane had been at the hit and run scene when she had gotten a call from Maura. Paddy had been at the hospital. Jane dropped everything and ran over to the hospital, which is where she was now.

Sitting in Constance's hospital room, the sound of machines was deafening to Jane. She watched as Maura held her mother's hand and she wished that she could take all of Maura's pain away. She'd work on that later. Right now, she had a job to do – keep Maura safe.

"Did he say why he came?" Jane questioned.

"Not really. But he seemed like he knew her."

"He knew Constance?"

"He said he'd tell me who my biological mother is."

"Do you want to know that?"

Maura just scoffed in reply.

"Well, he can't just keep popping in and out of your life like this, okay, Maura? We'll get him."

"I don't know if I want you to."

"Well, it's not up to me. But you've got a more serious problem right now, okay? Somebody tried to kill you. We've got to figure out who that is before they try it again."

"Jane, I have testified in hundreds of murder trials. Any one of those men and women convicted could want me dead."

"I put a uniform outside, okay? I am not losing you. Do you want me to stay?"

"No. No, just keep digging. I'll be okay."

"You know, I'll never tell you that it'll be okay when I don't know that it will. But I am not going anywhere. I love you. I will do whatever it takes to keep you safe."

"I know, Jane. I love you too. Now, go. Find out who did this."

Jane stood and kissed Maura's head, then she turned and left to go do the job she does better than anyone.

...

After making a big break in their arson case, which tied to Maura's hit and run, the team decided to let Maura go undercover and draw out their killer.

"This is my first undercover assignment." Maura stated.

Jane worked on concealing the wires for Maura's mic.

"The microphone doesn't make me look like I have three breasts, does it?" Maura questioned.

"Well, some people are into that. Not me. I like your breasts the way they are."

Maura smirked in response, then asked, "Is this what you'd wear to an undercover operation? I feel a little dressy."

"I'd wear a flak jacket."

"Oh, you know, I know this sounds vain, but I couldn't be a cop."

"No, you just date them." Jane teased.

Maura flashed Jane a longing look. It was a little difficult for Maura to just stand there while Jane touched her body – even if it was for official police business. She wanted this whole ordeal to be over so she go home with Jane and enjoy some alone time.

"Okay, put on your jacket." Jane instructed. Maura couldn't help but smile. Normally Jane was telling her to take off clothes, not put them on.

Jane gripped Maura's shoulders and looked her in the eye. Maura knew the conversation was about to turn serious.

"Listen to me. Alright? This is serious. Somebody is trying to kill you to stop you from investigating a murder."

"You don't have to tell me that. I was there when he nearly drove over my mother."

"You know we're only letting you do this because we're hoping that whoever this guy is, he is desperate enough to follow you into that warehouse and try again. But we're gonna be there this time. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you."

"I'm ready. Wait... what do you guys say to each other before you pull the string?"

"It's called a sting, Maura. Sting. We say 'don't get made.'"

"I like that. 'Don't get made.'"

"Don't do anything I wouldn't do, alright? I love you. I need you to come home tonight."

"Don't sound so worried. What could go wrong?"

...

Maura walked into the burned and condemned factory – the place where this whole mess started. She was confident. She knew Jane would never let anything happen to her. As long as Jane had her back, she would be fine.

She heard a voice behind her and turned around. It was one of the firefighters, Kevin, who worked with the first victim in this case. He was talking to her about why he did what he did – burned down buildings and killed a fellow firefighter – all so he could prove to the city that cutbacks and laying off firefighters was not a good idea.

Jane and Frost were hidden just a few feet away. Jane's heart was racing. She could hear the desperation in Kevin's voice. He would be willing to do anything to keep what he did a secret.

"And then Craig started digging around." Kevin confessed. "Just like you. You both should have just left it alone."

Kevin pulled a gun out of his jacket pocket and raised it with intent to shoot Maura. Maura ducked and covered head.

"Kevin don't!" She screamed.

But before Kevin could fire a single shot, he was brought down by another. Maura whipped her head around to see where the shot had come from. It was Paddy, up on a balcony. Jane and Frost emerged from their hiding place after hearing the shots. Jane saw Maura was safe, but she also saw Paddy. Jane watched as Paddy raised his gun and aimed it at Frost. She knew what she had to do. She raised her own weapon and fired at Paddy. She hit him in the shoulder. He stumbled backwards and fell off the balcony, landing on his back.

Maura watched in horror as he fell. As soon as he hit the ground, she scrambled to his side. She could faintly hear Jane screaming her name. She knelt down next to Paddy.

"Hope" he mumbled.

"'Hope'. What do you hope?" Maura desperately asked.

Jane ran over and knelt down on the other side of Paddy.

"Oh, god, Maura." Jane took off her jacket and moved to put pressure on Paddy's wound.

"Don't touch him!" Maura yelled at Jane.

"Maura..." Jane started, trying to explain herself.

"No, I mean it! Don't you dare touch him!"

Jane was taken aback. She'd never seen Maura so angry at her. She didn't think Maura was capable of being that angry at her. Jane slumped back on her heels and took a breath. Her lip quivered for a moment and a tear almost fell.
