A/N: This is moment we have all been waiting for.

I set this during 3x08 Cut Like a Knife... you'll see why.

I hope everyone enjoys this chapter! I had a lot of fun writing it.

As always I do not own Rizzoli and Isles. (but I wish I did)

...

It was early in the morning and Jane was sitting at the counter drinking coffee and browsing multiple web pages on her computer. She had a mission: find the perfect engagement ring for Maura.

The back door opened and Angela walked in.

"Good morning, Janie." Angela greeted as she entered the kitchen. "What're you researching? Oh, are those rings!? Oh, Janie!"

"Shhhh, Ma. I don't want Maura to hear." Jane scolded her mother.

"Oh, sorry, sorry. You're planning to propose?"

"No, Ma, I'm looking at rings for Frankie." Jane snarked. "Yes, I'm gonna propose. I just gotta find the right ring."

"You know Harold down on 8th street has some great rings for a good price."

"Maura is a sophisticated woman, Ma. You think she's gonna accept a ring from a bargain jewelry store?"

"I think if it comes from you, she will accept anything."

"I just want her to have the best. You know? A ring that she'll like and actually wear. I have to get this right."

"You will, sweetie. You know her better than anyone. I know you'll make the right decision."

"Decision about what?" Maura asked as she entered the kitchen.

Jane quickly closed her laptop. "Nothing. Nothing important."

"Okay." Maura eyed Jane suspiciously as she opened the cupboard to grab a coffee cup.

Before Maura could question any further, both Jane and Maura's phones rang. Another murder to pull focus from their personal lives.

...

Jane and Maura arrived at the crime scene – a low budget wedding chapel – to find their victim – a bride – on the ground with her throat slashed. Jane couldn't help but notice the irony. A murder at a wedding chapel while she was planning a proposal? The universe definitely had a sense of humor. She just hoped no one blew it for her.

Korsak, Frost, and Frankie all knew she was planning to propose to Maura. She had been taking extra shifts for the past few months in an attempt to save up money. Engagement rings were expensive.

Jane didn't miss the look she got from Korsak and Frost when she entered. Her eyes went wide and her mouth was set, silently telling them to not say a word.

"So in love wedding chapel." Jane read the sign on the wall above the altar. "What a weird place to get married."

"Well, not everybody can afford a big church wedding." replied Maura.

"So go to the justice of the peace. I mean, at least they don't have plastic flowers." Jane said. She was trying very hard not to give away the fact that she wanted a big church wedding, and soon.

"Her right carotid was severed by something very sharp." Maura said as she looked at the body.

"You know, thank goodness you're here. How would we have known it was something sharp?" Jane snipped. She loved their banter.

"Don't be mean. I'm not the one keeping secrets."

"Secrets?" Frost inquired. Jane glared at him.

"Yes." Maura said as she stopped down to examine the victim more closely. "Jane was acting very suspicious this morning. Closed her laptop and discontinued a conversation when I walked in."

Korsak cleared his throat then tried to help Jane out by steering the conversation back to the case. "Bride was Anja Babic, 20, foreign exchange student from Dubrovnik. Groom met her in a coffee house he was managing."

From there the conversation remained case orientated. Until, Jane and Frost started to follow the blood trail left at the crime scene.

"You worried Maura's gonna find out your plan?" Frost asked.

"I'm worried one of you is gonna slip up and say something. I don't even have a ring yet."

"Well, you better do it soon because it seems like Maura knows something is going on."

"I know. I know. I'm working on it. Look at the arterial spray. It hit the ceiling."

"I got the hint. No talk about the roposal-pay."

...

Jane knew this case was going to be rough. She was excited to start a life with Maura, to plan a wedding with her. She'd been thinking about it a lot lately. Rings weren't the only thing she was looking at. And now she was surrounded by wedding talk everywhere she went. Even in the morgue.

Jane had gone down to the morgue to see what Maura had found from the autopsy. Maura was actively working and Jane was observing, as they tended to do.

"Odd." Maura said as she swabbed a part of the body. She placed the swab under the microscope for Jane to see. "There's some kind of substance in the wound."

"It's blue." Jane said. "Well, that can't be the frosting. That was buttercream."

"What kind of cake would you have?" Maura asked.

Jane panicked, but kept her cool. "For what?"

"Our wedding." Maura replied like it was an obvious question to be asking.

"Uh..." Jane mumbled, looking for some answer that wouldn't give away the fact that a wedding to Maura is all she's been thinking about.

"I'm thinking a hazelnut almond, chocolate ganache, and maybe mocha buttercream." Maura said.

"Maura, we're not engaged."

"Oh, I know. But we could be some day. Don't you think?"

Jane's heart started beating faster. She hated lying to Maura. When Jane didn't respond, Maura turned back to her autopsy.

"The edges of the wound are clean."

"So, it's not from this cake knife?"

"No. I've rarely seen a blade sharp enough to make a cut like this." Maura said. Then she did the last thing Jane wanted and turned the topic of conversation back to weddings. "Hmm. What a shame to get married in a polyester blend. What does your dress look like?"

"I don't wear dresses."

"Oh, come on. You must have fantasized about your wedding dress as a little girl."

"Yes, once. I had a very high fever."

"My gown would be silk charmeuse with an empire waist and a 20-foot train."

Jane's eyes almost popped out of her sockets at the thought of a 20 foot train. Where were they going to get married?

"And the ceremony would be in the cliffs of Santorini, right above a volcano" Maura continued.

Now Jane was really worried. "There is no way I am getting married above a volcano."

"Okay, so where would you get married?"

"You know, I – I hadn't really thought about it."

"Have you thought about us getting married at all?" Maura asked.

"I, uh –"

"Because, Jane, I'm starting to worry. You've been very secretive lately. And you've been working more than usual. Is it me? Did I do something?"

"What? God, no. I love you."

"So, then, why..."

"You know what, this is not a conversation that we should be having over a dead body. Can we finish?"

"Yes. Of course."

Maura continued her examination of the victim. Jane was only barely listening. Somewhere along the way Jane's amazing plan to surprise Maura with a proposal turned into Maura thinking Jane didn't want to be around her anymore. She had to fix this. And soon.

...

Jane and Maura walked into the Dirty Robber for dinner. Jane was still anxious about the case and all the secrets it seemed to be bringing up. Jane never had any intention of hurting Maura, but it seemed she had anyway.

"I'm gonna make you eat something green tonight." Maura said as they made their way over to the bar.

"Okay, I'll get extra pickles on my burger." Jane replied.

"Is that Frankie over there?" Maura asked. She had spotted Frankie sitting in a booth by himself.

"Yes." Jane replied, suddenly excited. She needed to talk to someone about this mess she made. "Can you get us some drinks and then meet us over there?"

"Yes, Jane, of course." Maura smiled.

"You're the best." Jane walked over to Frankie and slid into the booth opposite of him.

"Hey, Janie." Frankie greeted.

"I have a situation. Maura is starting to get suspicious." Jane whispered.

"Well you are keeping secrets from her."

"It's a good secret!"

Frankie shrugged and sipped his beer.

"Look, I need some help, okay. I'm gonna go get her ring tomorrow. I need you to help cover for me in case anyone asks where I'm at."

"Yeah, I can do that."

"Here we are." Maura said as she placed a beer and a glass of wine on the table then slid into the booth next to Jane. "What are we talking about?"

"Uh, Frankie's interview. He has that big interview for homicide detective coming up."

"Oh, yeah. I do. Hoping maybe Jane can give me some advice."

...

Maura walked into the homicide bull pen with updates on the case. She was looking for Jane, but couldn't seem to find her.

"Have you guys seen Jane?" she asked Frost and Korsak.

"Jane?" Frost asked. "Uh, no. You seen her, Korsak?"

"Nope. Haven't seen her." Korsak answered.

"Okay, what is going on? Every time I walk into a room people start acting strange. Is there something going on with Jane that I need to know about?" Maura questioned.

"No. Everything with Jane is fine. Trust me." Frost answered.

"So then why all the secrecy and extra shifts?" Maura asked.

"Ask Jane." Korsak responded.

"I have asked Jane. She changes the subject and won't tell me." Maura gazed down at her shoes for a second then looked back up at her friends. "I mean I know she loves me, but she's not acting like it. I just need to know that it's not me. That this isn't about me."

Frost and Korsak looked at each other. How could they answer this question? Of course all of Jane's secrecy was about Maura, just not in the way that Maura was assuming.

"Look, Maura," Frost started, "Jane loves you more than anything. All she does is talk about how great her life is now that you two are together. She's been working on stuff lately, but it's not bad. It's all good."

Maura nodded and tried not to cry. She hadn't felt this insecure since high school. Jane came walking into the bull pen at that moment.

"Hey." She greeted. Maura turned around to look at her. Jane could see that she was on the verge of tears. "What's going on?"

"Nothing." Maura replied. "I have an update on the case."

"No, you look like you're about to cry." Jane said. She pointed at Korsak and Frost accusingly. "What did these two knuckle heads do?"

"Nothing, Jane. They just reminded me how much you love me."

"They had to remind you of that? I tell you every day."

"I know." Maura cleared her throat. "I do, um, have updates on the case for you."

...

Jane finally had it. She had the ring she was going to propose to Maura with. She was so excited to finally have it that she couldn't wait to show someone. So, when her mother walked into the kitchen that night for a snack, she had to show her.

"Oh, it's beautiful, Janie! She's gonna love it!" Angela gushed.

"I hope so. Now that our case is over, I can finally ask her." Jane said as she closed the lid of the ring box and tucked it away in her pocket.

"Well, I'm ready whenever you are." Angela said.

"Tomorrow. I'm gonna do it tomorrow. You'll tell everyone the plan?"

"Yes. I will let everyone know."

"Know what?" Maura asked as she walked into the kitchen.

"Uh, that I will not available tomorrow because I am spending my whole day with you." Said Jane, as she stood from her chair at the counter and walked over to Maura, placing her hands on Maura's hips.

"Jane, that's sweet."

"I'm gonna go make some phone calls. Goodnight you two." Angela said. She headed out the back door.

"Night, Ma" Jane said at the same time Maura responded with "Goodnight, Angela."

"So, tomorrow morning, you wanna go running with me?" Jane asked.

"I would love to." Maura replied.

"Great. I'm looking forward to it."

...

Jane and Maura had been jogging in silence for a while. Jane's plan was finally coming to fruition and she was nervous. They were getting closer and closer to the spot where Jane was going to propose.

"So, uh, you know how you asked me if I had ever fantasied about my wedding?" Jane asked, slightly winded from jogging.

"Yes." Maura responded.

"Well, I had this dumb idea that I would say my vows at Fenway over home plate in a Red Sox jersey."

Maura chuckled. "It's not dumb, Jane. It's not exactly elegant, but at least it's colorful."

"And we would have the reception over the pitcher's mound, and we would serve foot-long hot dogs, and frozen lemonade. And the guests would throw peanuts at us instead of rice."

Maura laughed. Jane stopped. They were right near one of the picnic areas near the path of their favorite park to run in. Jane placed her hands on her knees to catch her breath and prepare herself. Maura turned around when she noticed that Jane had stopped.

"Jane?"

Jane stood up straight and closed the few feet of distance between her and Maura. "Ever since we started dating, I knew that Fenway park fantasy was not gonna cut it. You deserve the fanciest wedding money can buy."

"Jane."

"I, uh, know I've been acting weird lately and there's a good reason for that. I actually have something I want to ask you." Jane pulled the ring from her pocket and Maura gasped.

"Maura..." Jane said as she got down on one knee. Maura looked down at the shiny, princess cut diamond and tears began to fill in her eyes. "You are the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. I am so, so grateful that I shot myself." Maura and Jane chuckled. "Because I got you. Loving you has been the best decision that I have ever made and I knew from the moment we first kissed that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you." Maura brought her folded hands up to her mouth as she choked out a sob. "So, Maura Dorothea Isles, will you marry me?"

"Yes!" Maura answered, tears running down her cheeks. Jane stood up and slid the diamond onto Maura's finger. Maura flung her arms around Jane's neck and hugged her tight. Then she pulled back and kissed Jane.

"Come here." Jane grabbed Maura's hand and led her in the direction of the picnic tables. Waiting there was their friends and family. "She said yes!" Jane exclaimed. A chorus of happiness erupted among the group and everyone rushed over to see Maura's new bling. The smile on the newly engaged couple's faces could be seen for miles. This was the happiest they had ever been.
