A/N Here is my take on 3x10 Melt My Heart to Stone.

As always, I do not own Rizzoli and Isles.

...

Jane calmly rode the elevator down to the morgue on a sunny Monday morning. She stepped off and headed straight to the office of her fiancé. Man, that felt good. Maura Isles was her fiancé. She wanted nothing more than to just sit down and start planning a wedding that would her make smile wider than she ever smiled before. Unfortunately work had other plans. But Maura didn't that get memo.

"Hey. We got a possible body dump near Grant Museum of fine arts." Jane said as she entered Maura's office.

"Give me one second and I'll grab my bag." Maura said without looking up from her computer.

"Whatcha working on?" Jane asked.

"I am registering us with a wedding website."

"What?"

"There are websites designed to help couples plan the perfect wedding. So I am signing us up." Maura finished what she was typing and closed her laptop. "Okay. Let's go."

Maura grabbed her bag and walked past Jane, skimming her hand across Jane's hip as she passed. God this woman will be the death of me. Jane thought as she followed her fiancé out the door.

...

"So these websites, they help you plan a wedding?" Jane asked as her and Maura walked from the car to the crime scene.

"Yes. They have sections on their website for everything. Venues, vendors, dresses, even a gift registry."

"Wow. Well now I'm sorta glad you took the lead on this because I am clearly in over my head here."

"I will walk you through it later. I promise." Maura's phone buzzed in her bag. She retrieved it and checked the message. "It's your mother. She wants to know if her yarn arrived yet."

"Her yarn?"

"Yes. She's knitting. I think it's a baby blanket."

"Okay, yes. Now we do have a problem." Jane said sarcastically as she imitates walkie-talkie static and pretends to talk into a walkie on her shoulder. "All units, be on the lookout for a woman who is so desperate to be a grandmother, she's knitting a blanket for the baby of Lydia, the slut who slept with her ex-husband and her youngest son."

"She's worried about what kind of future that baby's gonna have."

"And I'm not? Lydia could barely tie her own shoes."

"Oh." Maura said as they reached the scene. Korsak was helping lower a statue to the ground.

"What, did you pull something?" Jane asked.

"I smell something. Decomposition."

"I cannot believe you can smell decomp in bronze."

Just then the statue fell over, startling everyone at the scene. The statue cracked as it was made of plaster, not bronze, and inside was a woman. Maura determined that the body was likely kept in cold storage until it was staged outside the museum. Jane had no leads. No witnesses. No security tapes. Just one giant mystery.

...

Jane and Maura stopped to grab coffee at the café while waiting for the body to arrive and be cleaned of plaster. Maura had her tablet out with the website she signed them up for open.

"Okay, see? There is everything we need." Maura turned her tablet towards Jane.

Jane read the webpage. "This seems way too easy. We seriously just look through all this stuff and we have a wedding?"

"Well, no. We still have to call and book meetings, tours, and fittings."

"I will be leaving that all up to you."

"You don't want any input on our wedding?"

"I mean, yeah, on the important stuff. I'll help with the venue and my suit and the food. Definitely getting my opinion on the food. But everything else, is all you. Go wild. Plan the wedding of your dreams."

Maura smiled. God she loved this woman. She took her tablet back and moved to put it away. As she did, she glanced out the window of the café and saw the last person she ever expected to see. "Oh my god."

"What?" Jane turned to look. "Isn't that the guy you saved in the morgue a few months ago who took you to a thank you dinner and kissed you?"

Maura nodded.

... ... ...

Jane and Maura were in the morgue working on their latest case when a body was brought in, pronounced dead at the scene. Dennis Rockmond, 35.

Maura had just begun a preliminary exam when Jane noticed something. The dead guy's penis was rising.

Jane panicked. Maura was curious - in a scientific way.

Maura placed her hand on the appendage. "His penis has a pulse." She stated. And that's when they realized he was alive.

Maura and Jane were able to save him and he was very appreciative. He later brought Maura a gift – a hand he sculpted called "The Healing Hand". And then he asked her to dinner.

"Do you have plans tonight?"

"Um..."

"Can I buy you dinner?"

"Oh, I am in a relationship."

"It's nothing like that. Just a 'thank you for saving my life' dinner."

"Okay. I would like that."

So, they went to dinner and then decided to walk around an art exhibit. They had discussed art during dinner and Dennis wanted to show Maura some pieces he thought she'd like.

"What an exceptional piece!" Maura exclaimed as she approached a beautiful wall of art.

"And you have exceptional hands." Dennis said as she grabbed one of Maura's hands and held it. "I would love to sculpt them."

"Oh, I don't..."

"What's the wildest, most outrageous thing you've ever done?"

"Ummm..." Maura paused and considered whether or not to answer. She pulled her hand back and decided it was time to end the night. "I think it's time I head home."

"Oh, come on. The night's just started."

"I really should go. Thank you for dinner." Maura turned to walk away and head home to Jane.

"Maura, wait." Maura stopped and turned back around. "I had a really nice time tonight. I'd like to do it again."

Maura took a few steps back towards him. "Dennis-" Before she could get the rest of her sentence out of her mouth, he was kissing her. Maura immediately pushed him back. "What are you doing?"

"I told you. I had a really nice time tonight."

"And I told you that I'm seeing someone. I have to go." Maura turned and quickly walked away. She pulled her phone out of her bag and immediately called Jane.

... ... ...

Now here he was at BPD. Jane looked like she might strangle him.

"What is he doing here?" Maura wondered.

"I don't know but I sure as hell am not gonna leave you alone with him."

"Maura," Dennis greeted as he approached. "Just who I was looking for." He stopped at their table.

"You finally come to apologize?" Jane asked.

"Excuse me?" Dennis was very confused.

"She is angry about what happened the last time you were here. As am I." Maura explained.

"Right. I should've called and apologized. I clearly misread something."

Maura nodded. Jane mumbled "Clearly."

"I'm very sorry." Dennis waited a beat before continuing. "Um, I'm having a book signing today for my book." He held up a copy of his book 'Release Your Inner Winner and Win'. "It's right down the street. It'd mean so much to me if you could come. I know that I messed up, but you still saved my life. I wouldn't be here to do a book signing if it wasn't for you."

"I can't." "She can't." Maura and Jane spoke at the same time.

"We need to get back to work." Maura grabbed her things, stood from the table, and her and Jane walked out of the cafe.

In the hall on the way to the elevator, Jane said, "You better be glad I didn't punch that guy."

"You don't need to protect my honor, Jane."

"You're my fiancé. I literally do."

...

Once the body was clear of plaster, Jane, Maura, and the team dove into their case. Maura and Jane were able to determine that their victim was a prostitute and a drug user who was strangled to death and had her arms removed post mortem. Frost turned up four other cases with similar motives and victims to theirs. All the victims in the other cases were women who were prostitutes, all had their arms cut off, and all were left in locations used by kids. They were more than likely hunting a serial killer. With no finger prints to run to find an ID, Jane sent Frost out to canvas with a photograph of their victim.

After a more thorough examination of the body and the return of lab work, Maura had more information. Their victim was tortured – the killer put out his cigarettes on the bottom of her feet. And she had a C-section and had her tubes tied 30-40 years ago.

Frost had luck out on his canvas. He was able to identify the victim as Rachel Dugan, 54. But before Frost could get back to the station, another body dropped.

A statue identical to the one encasing Rachel Dugan was found on a carousel. This victim was killed in the same manner as Rachel Dugan, had cigarette burns on her feet, was a prostitute and drug user, and was a mother. Looking at all 6 cases they had access to – the 4 Frost found and the 2 they were working, Jane and Maura were apprehensive about what might happen next.

"I just find it interesting that the majority of serial killers aren't reclusive social misfits or monsters." Maura said.

"I find it terrifying." Jane replied.

They were both still at the morgue despite the late hour. Maura was finishing up the autopsy on the second victim and had been relaying information to Jane.

"I think the guy that shovels our driveway is a serial killer." Jane continued.

"You do?"

"No, but I don't know if even I could tell that he was. Okay. I'm gonna go show this around." Jane held up a picture of their second victim.

"Now? It's 9:00 at night."

"Yeah, well, I can't go home knowing this animal is out there. You go home, though. Rest. Lock all the doors."

"I'd feel a lot safer if you were there."

"I know. I just – I need to solve this."

"Be safe."

"I will." Jane stepped closer to Maura and planted a firm kiss on her lips. "I love you. I'll be home soon."

...

One suspect, note from the killer, and dead body later, Jane was no closer to solving this case than she was before. And to make matters worse, Lydia was here.

Jane headed up from the lab to the café to find Angela and Frankie with Lydia. A moaning Lydia who refused to go the hospital. Frankie informed Jane that he called Tommy, who showed up shortly after. Tommy was very confused to see Lydia there and was stunned to learn that the baby she was carrying could possibly be his.

"So, what's the plan now, dad?" Frankie asked.

"I don't know. Maybe I could get a job painting houses." Tommy answered.

"Oh! Yeah! He's totally ready to become a father." Frankie snarked. Jane had enough and she turned to leave. "Wait, whoa, whoa. Where are you going?"

"I'm sorry, Frankie. I got three dead women, okay? I'm going back to my case." Jane couldn't believe she wasted precious time dealing with this.

...

Meanwhile, Maura was down in the morgue reviewing the evidence they had complied on their three victims. She really needed to help solve this so Jane could relax. Maybe they could actually get some wedding stuff done if they weren't hunting down a serial killer.

"Maura."

Maura startled. When she turned around to see who it was, she saw Dennis walking in the loading bay door. "Oh my god. You scared me."

"I am so sorry. It's probably not okay that I came through the back, is it?"

"No. It's not, actually. Why did you?"

"Well, it's my birthday. And I-I needed to come here today. I wanted to relive the highest and the lowest parts of my year. And I need to tell you something." Dennis took a look around the morgue. "Wow. This is, uh ... this is where they wheeled me in."

"You'd been declared dead." Maura simply stated.

"Yeah. If it wasn't for you, I'd be in the ground."

"Mm-Hm." Maura let the silence linger for a second before asking, "You said you needed to tell me something?"

"Well, you know, the day you saved me ... literally brought me back to life on that autopsy table ... all I planned to do was thank you."

"I'm a doctor, Dennis, so you don't owe me anything."

"I know. I just wanted to apologize again for kissing you. It's just... my parents, they have the perfect marriage. I've always wanted what they have. And I was so knocked over by you, this gorgeous doctor who saved me, and I got carried away. I guess I thought you were feeling the same things I was. Clearly you weren't. I just really hope that you can forgive me."

"Of course. I forgive you."

"I'm ... I'm sure you probably can't, but I would give anything to celebrate my birthday with you."

"Oh, uh, well, I'm ... I'm actually waiting on some results."

"Please. It would mean so much to me if you could. I promise I will respect your boundaries. Just a friendly birthday dinner with the doctor who saved my life."

"Dennis, I really can't. We have a big case that we're working on and..."

"I tried to do this the nice way." Dennis reached behind his back to grab something.

"Oh my god!" Maura raised both hands in the air as Dennis raised a gun to her chest. He took a few steps closer to her and grabbed her by the arm. He shoved the gun into her side and began to lead her to the exit.

"Dennis, stop, please. You don't want to do this." Maura begged.

"Shut up!" Dennis yelled angrily.

"Please. Please don't do this."

"I said shut up!" Dennis yelled as he hit Maura with the butt of the gun and knocked her unconscious. He grabbed her legs and dragged her out of the morgue through the loading bay door.

...

Jane was up in the bullpen with Frost and Korsak going over the evidence. They managed to obtain an ID for their third victim and, unfortunately, found that their only two suspects both had solid alibis.

"Okay." Jane began. "All of our victims had really young children except for Rachel Dugan, who's much older than everybody else. "What do we know about her kid?"

"Think it was a son." Frost said as he pulled up the correct file on his computer screen. "Yeah, right here ... Mark Dugan. He'd be 36 now."

"What happened to him?" Korsak asked.

"Says he was taken away from her after repeated episodes of abuse." Frost answered.

"She ever burn him with cigarettes?" Jane questioned.

"Yeah. On the soles of his feet." Frost said.

"We need to find him." Jane declared.

"He was made a ward of the state when he was 5." Frost said.

"Keep digging, guys." Jane's phone buzzed and she sighed as she read the message. "I'm sorry. I got to take care of something."

...

Jane rushed downstairs to find Tommy, Frankie, and Angela circled around Lydia who was laying on the floor in the lobby screaming in pain. She was in labor, for real this time. Great.

Jane rushed over to where Lydia was laying.

"I called Maura. She's not answering." Frankie updated Jane as she approached.

"Oh, god! Get it out!" Lydia screamed.

"Okay! Lydia, let's let the nice paramedics take you to the hospital." Jane said as she tried to usher in the paramedics.

"No!" Lydia exclaimed.

"Geez, this girl's got some pipes." Tommy commented.

"Okay, okay. I think the baby is coming. Listen. Lydia, push." Angela instructed.

"No, Lydia, don't push!" Jane stated.

"It's really stuck! Tommy, help!" Lydia cried.

Tommy took a look and quickly retreated. "Oh, geez!"

"Okay, now she wants someone with medical training. Get in there." Jane directed the paramedics.

"Jane!" Korsak called from across the lobby.

"Find anything on Mark Dugan?" Jane asked as she approached him and Frost.

"Should we do something?" Korsak inquired.

"Babies are born every day. We got a serial killer on the loose. What'd you find on Dugan?" Jane wanted to keep the conversation as case focused as she could. She really did not want to deal with the family drama.

"Well, he bounced around from foster home to foster home." Frost started.

"Lots of abuse. He ran away at 8 and found his working-girl, drug-addicted mother." Korsak continued.

"She abused him some more before she dragged him back to another foster home." Frost finished.

Jane's phone buzzed with a text alert. She checked it and said, "Tox results are back on the third victim. I'll go get those and meet you guys upstairs."

...

"Maura?" Jane called as she stepped off the elevator and entered Maura's office.

"Hello, Detective." Susie greeted as she followed Jane into Maura's space. "I have the results on the additional tox screen."

"Oh, great. Thanks. Where's Maura?"

"I thought she was with you. I haven't seen her in over an hour."

"Oh, god. You found Inderal in the third victim's system?"

"Yes. What is it?"

"Inderal was used as a sedative so the killer could kill our third victim. Dennis Rockmond nearly died of an Inderal overdose." Jane turned and stepped towards Maura desk. "He sculpted this hand for Maura." Jane said as she picked up the sculpted hand and smashed it on the floor. Inside was a human hand.

"You haven't seen Maura?" Jane asked. Susie shook her head no. Jane began panicking, worst case scenarios running through her head. She quickly excited Maura's office and entered the morgue. "Maura!" She called. No answer. Jane pulled out her phone and called Maura. Straight to voicemail.

Jane rushed back to the elevator, breathing heavy. She dialed Frost as she went and when he picked up, she shouted into the phone, "Frost, get Korsak! Meet me outside. Now!"

...

Maura's eyes opened slowly. She blinked a few times to try and clear the fog in her head. Her wrists hurt. She felt abrasive material around them. She tried to talk but there was something in the way. A cloth tied around her face.

"Maura. You're awake." She heard Dennis say. Everything seemed very far away.

"Look behind you, Maura. You see that pedestal? See that? That's where I do my real work. You're gonna be my next creation. I'm gonna honor you. Just like my mother, you gave me life."

Dennis – Mark Dugan – came closer with rope in his hands. Maura knew what would happen next. She'd be like the other 7 victims, strangled to death.

"Dugan, back away from her!" Frost shouted.

Jane, Frost, and Korsak entered Dennis' loft with guns raised. Dennis grabbed Maura, hauled her out of the chair, and held her in front of him, a human shield.

"Maura, you okay?" Jane asked. Maura whimpered in response.

"You must think you're real smart, huh, Detective?" Dennis was walking with Maura back towards an elevator shaft. "To figure all of this out?"

"No. We're just lucky." Jane appeased.

"You're damn right. Not even the genius Dr. Isles saw this coming." Dennis took another step.

"No, no, wait, wait, wait! Look, look, look. We're all in your hands, okay? We're all in your hands." Jane said as she holstered her weapon and raised her hands.

"You find my mother's hand?"

"Yes."

"You understand why I had to take both of them, right?"

"So she couldn't hurt you anymore."

"I left my creations at all the places that I wanted to go with my Mommy." Dennis took another step. He was close enough to the edge that another step would mean death.

"Wait! Why hurt Maura? Come on."

"Because her healing hands brought me back to this Earth! That's why! And now mothers maybe will finally listen ... treat your kids right. Because you never know who they'll grow up to be."

Dennis took another step back. Jane lunged and grabbed Maura. Jane pulled Maura back into her as Dennis fell to his death.

Maura was sobbing. Jane pulled the gag down from her mouth and Maura sank deeper into Jane's chest. "It's okay. It's okay. I got you. I always got you. You're safe. You're safe." Jane whispered into Maura's hair.

...

Hours later Maura was home cuddled up against Jane's chest on the couch, Jane slowly running her fingers through Maura's hair trying to soothe her. Angela was sitting in a chair near the couch, knitting.

"You haven't said a word in over an hour." Angela stated.

"I'm just trying to process the worst day of my life." Maura answered.

Jane placed a light kiss to the top of Maura's head. "We all met him. None of use spotted him. You said it yourself. They're not all reclusive monsters."

"Why couldn't you two do something else for a living?" Angela asked.

"Like what, ma?"

"You thought about being a ballerina." Angela replied.

"You did?" Maura asked incredulously.

"I did. And then I wanted to be a goalie in the NHL." Jane said.

"That sounds more like you." Maura added.

The doorbell rang, interrupting their conversation.

"Oh, that must be my yarn." Angela said as she put down her knitting and stood to answer the door.

"How much yarn do you need for a baby blanket?" Jane asked. "And speaking of babies was Lydia's a girl or boy?" When Angela didn't answer, Jane continued. "Ma? Is it the yarn?"

Angela walked back into the living room, a baby in her arms. "It's Lydia's baby."
