A/N: So school has started back up again which means that I'm so tired from teaching that I have no energy left to write. I promise that this story is far from over, so just bare with me as I navigate work and this hobby that I love.

Anyway, this is one of my favorite episodes and I really hope I did it justice.

As always I do not own Rizzoli and Isles.

...

Maura and Jane were dressed to the nines to attend a charity function. Maura looked stunning in a cream and black lace dress, while Jane embraced her true style in a tailored suit. They sipped their wine and beer as they listened to the founders finish their welcome speech.

"We knew we had to be the ones to start M.I.L.E., a bone-marrow database that matches strangers through DNA. But we could only do it with the help from all of you, so thank you."

The attendees applauded and Maura turned to Jane.

"Thank you for coming with me," Maura said.

"Yeah. Of course."

"Excuse me, waiter." A man interrupted. Jane had been mistaken for a waiter several times tonight and she was beginning to get tired of it.

"I don't work here," Jane begrudgingly replied.

Maura chuckled. "I told you to wear a dress."

"You know how much I hate wearing dresses," Jane whined.

"I know. And you do look so very sexy in your suit."

"I do, hmm?" Jane grabbed Maura's hip with her free hand and pulled her closer.

"Dr Isles," Tucker Franklin, MILE founder and pro-golfer interrupted. "Thank you for all you've done for MILE."

"Of course. It's an important cause. This is my fiancé, Detective Jane Rizzoli."

"Fiancé? Congratulations," Tucker's wife replied.

"Thank you," Maura said.

"Oh, honey, I think it's time for you to go work your magic with the platinum table," Tucker's wife suggested.

"Dr. Isles, could I snag you?" Tucker asked. "Those are all grumpy doctors. I bet they'd open their wallets if I introduced them to the chief medical examiner."

"I'd be happy to help." Maura placed her hand on Jane's arm. "I'll be back."

Jane watched as Maura headed off to wine and dine. She was left alone with Tucker's wife and wasn't quite sure what to do now. Then Tucker's wife filled the silence.

"Dr. Isles made such a generous donation to MILE this year."

"Yeah. Well, that Maura... she's a giver."

"Mhm. How about you, Jane? Are you a giver?"

Jane's phone vibrated in her pocket before she could answer. She removed her phone from her pocket and held it up. "Excuse me, I have to take this."

Jane walked over to a quiet corner of the room and read the text. It was from Frankie. 911. She quickly dialed his number but received no answer.

Jane rushed over to the table where Maura was talking with several people.

"Maura."

Maura could see the panic on Jane's face. "Would you excuse us?" she said to the group as she stepped away. "What's wrong?"

"Frankie just texted 911."

"Is he alright?"

"I don't know. He didn't answer when I called. I need to go check on him."

"I'll come with you."

"No. You stay. This is important to you. If I need you, I'll call you."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Okay."

"I will come back and pick you up."

"Jane, don't worry. I can catch a cab."

"Okay." Jane kissed Maura softly. "I love you. If you need me, call me."

Jane rushed out of the room and Maura was left standing there, alone.

"Was that your fiancé?" A man, Brad, asked as he approached her. They had been chatting at the table Tucker had walked her over to before Jane interrupted.

"Yes."

"Is everything okay?"

"Um, no. But, she will figure it out. She always does."

"Well, I brought you a Chateau de la Valence." He handed her a glass filled halfway with wine.

"Oh, you didn't have to."

"Don't worry about it."

"You know," Maura took a sip. "This is one of my favorites."

"Really? Well, since your fiancé just left, would you like some company for the remainder of the night?"

"That would be nice, yes."

Maura and Brad walked off to find a place to sit, their conversation easily flowing.

...

Jane was breathing heavy by the time she reached Frankie's door. She knocked insistently and when Frankie didn't answer immediately, she knocked some more. A second later Frankie opened the door mid knock.

"Jane?"

"Frankie, are you alright?"

"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"

"You texted me 911."

"No... no I did not."

"Yes, you did." Jane held up her phone and showed Frankie the text.

"I didn't send that."

"What do you mean you didn't send it?"

"I mean..." Frankie pulled up his texts to Jane. "I didn't send it." Jane looked and saw that Frankie's last text to Jane was from hours ago asking about a place to get a tux for the wedding.

"So then who...?"

"I don't know but it wasn't me. I'm fine."

"Then why didn't you answer when I called you before."

"Because I'm kinda busy." Frankie opened the door wider and Jane could see a girl with tousled hair sitting on Frankie's couch.

"Oh. Oh!"

"Yeah, so if you don't mind..."

"Okay, yeah. I'm sorry."

Frankie closed the door and Jane turned to leave. She dialed Maura as she headed back to car. The phone rang and then went to voicemail when Maura didn't pick up. Jane left a message. "Hey, Maur. Something weird is going on. That text from Frankie, wasn't from Frankie. I'm heading to the station to see if I can find out where it came from. If you want me to come get you, I can. Call me, please, to let me know you're okay. I love you." Then she dialed Frost. He picked up. "Frost, hey. I need you to meet me down at BPD. I know what time it is. I still need you. Just meet me there!"

...

Frost begrudgingly met Jane in BRIC forty five minutes later. She explained the situation to him and he quickly began digging. While Frost was doing his research, Jane was pacing.

"Well, it looks like someone spoofed his number," Frost said.

"Can you find out who it was?"

"I was able to find the actual number of the phone that sent the message, but... it's a burner and the person who bought it paid cash."

"So it's untraceable."

"Sorry."

"Why would someone text me 911 from Frankie's number? What were they getting out of it?"

"I don't know. I can keep digging, see if I can find surveillance footage where the phone was purchased. But I'd rather do that in the morning."

"Oh, yeah, yeah. Thanks for coming in to help me with this. It just really freaked me out."

"Yeah, no problem. I'll see you in the morning." Frost turned off his computer and headed out. Jane stood in the middle of BRIC and continued to think. None of this made sense.

After a few minutes of quiet contemplation, Jane pulled out her phone and called Maura. It was midnight, Jane still had time to go and pick Maura up if she hadn't already left. Jane listened to the phone ring and the longer it went, the more worried she became. The phone dumped her to voicemail and Jane tried not to panic. This was the third time Jane had called Maura since she left the charity event and Maura hadn't answered any of her calls. She hurried out the door and headed home.

...

"Maura!" Jane called as she entered their home. "Maura!" Jane quickly checked all the rooms, upstairs and downstairs. No Maura. She rushed over to her mother's space and knocked impatiently on the door. "Ma!"

Angela opened the door, visibly flustered. "What?"

"Have you seen Maura?"

"No. Weren't you two supposed to be out tonight?"

"Yeah, we were. I had to leave and Maura stayed and she hasn't picked up any of my calls for the last two hours."

"Okay. Okay. Everything is going to be okay. She probably put her phone on silent and lost track of time."

"When have you ever known Maura to lose track of time?"

"Rizzoli, head back over to the event and see if Maura is there." Cavanaugh appeared from behind the door. "Your mother and I will wait here in case she comes back."

"You- why- I don't want to know." Jane turned and left.

Angela giggled, closed the door, and went back inside with Cavanaugh.

...

Jane woke up to a call from BPD. She had collapsed in her bed around 3 a.m. She didn't intend on falling asleep. She didn't even pull the sheets down. She intended to change out of her nice clothes and into something more comfortable while she waited for Maura to come home. Apparently her body had other plans.

Jane answered the call – a murder – and managed to get her body off the bed and dressed before heading downstairs. As she came down the stairs, she could see beautiful honey blonde waves peaking over the top of the couch. Maura. She rushed over to the couch and knelt down beside her fiancé.

"Maura?" Jane placed her hand on Maura's back and rubbed gently. Maura slowly began to stir. She lifted her head, which was smushed into a pillow, to reveal smudged makeup and dark circles under her eyes. Once she managed to sit all the way up, Jane threw her arms around her and hugged her impossibly tight. "Where were you? I was so worried."

Jane sat back to look at Maura as she answered. "I don't know. I don't know, but my head is killing me."

Jane raised her eyebrows in shock. "That's it? What... there's no scientific explanation for the common hangover? No lobes? No craniums? No dehydration? What, nothing? Are you okay?"

Maura just sat and stared at Jane. She didn't know how to process anything she just said.

"We have a murder," Jane said. "Are you okay to go or do you want me to call someone else?"

"There is no one else."

"I mean technically there is, but..."

"I'll be okay. I just need some coffee." Maura attempted to stand up, but was so wobbly, Jane had to catch her.

"Are you sure?"

"Let's just go."

...

Jane and Maura pulled up to the crime scene and got out of the car. Maura wasn't feeling any better and she looked like she had hit rock bottom showing up to a crime scene in yesterday's dress, jacket, and makeup.

"Alright, what have we got?" Jane asked as she approached, Maura a couple of steps behind.

Korsak answered, "Adult male, mid to late 30s. Meter maid found him around 7:00 A.M. Keys are still in the ignition. No drag marks outside the vehicle."

"Oh, so, he was killed inside the car," Jane said.

"It looks like he was punched in the throat," Korsak noted.

"Maura, what do you think?" Jane turned to Maura who was still trying to snap on her gloves.

"Uh, is it bright out here?" Maura asked as she squinted and tried to adjust to the light.

"Um, did you guys get an I.D.?" Jane tried to keep everyone from noticing Maura's hungover state.

Frost responded, "Not yet. I ran the plates. Car's registered to a Dorothy MacAllister, deceased. Her son sold the car for cash last week and didn't get a name."

Maura managed to get herself together enough to start examining the body. She bent down into the car to feel the body in the driver's seat. "Body's not in full rigor. Time of death within the last eight hours." She moved the body from its slumped position to an upright one and when she got a view of his face, she gasped and backed away from the car quickly.

"Maura, what is it?" Jane looked into the car to see what startled Maura.

"I met this man, last night," Maura explained. "He's a prominent doctor. He kept me company after you left."

"When's the last time you saw him?" Jane questioned.

Frost began digging around on the passenger side of the car and found some damning evidence. Before Maura could answer Jane's question, he held up the evidence he discovered. "Uh... Jane..."

Jane was stunned when she saw it. "Maura, what is your I.D. badge doing in the victim's car?"

Maura was silent for a moment as she tried to recall the previous night. Her memory failing her, she shakily replied, "I don't know."

...

In light of the evidence found in the victim's car, Maura was removed from the case. She was sitting on a bench to the side of the crime scene while she waited for Jane to tell her next steps. Cavanaugh had arrived on scene to help the team navigate what to do next. This was about to be a very complicated case.

They had updated Cavanaugh on what they had so far and were trying to decide what to do now.

"We know Dr. Isles didn't do it, so maybe someone set her up," Frost said. "It wouldn't be that hard to steal her ID card, put it in his car."

"Okay. Rizzoli, what time did Dr. Isles get home last night?" Cavanaugh inquired. He had the knowledge of Jane's panic from the night before guiding his questions.

"I'm not sure, sir. I waited up for her until about 3 and then I passed out." Jane answered.

"So her whereabouts are unaccounted for from when you left her at the event until you saw her this morning." Cavanaugh clarified.

"That's a big window." Korsak stated.

"Did anyone see her with the victim?" Cavanaugh asked.

Jane shook her head. "I don't know. I never met him. He may have been one of the doctors she was talking with."

Cavanaugh turned to Frost and instructed, "Detective Frost, I want you find and interview the guests at the MILE event last night. See if anyone can place our victim with Dr. Isles."

"Yes, sir," Frost replied. Then he headed back to the station to complete his task.

"What's she say happened?" Cavanaugh asked.

"She can't remember anything," Jane said.

"This is as bad as it gets," Cavanaugh said. "We've got to bring her in for questioning."

"What? How can we investigate her?" Jane asked.

"You're not Rizzoli. You're off the case." Cavanaugh ordered.

Jane was shocked at Cavanaugh's decision. "Excuse me?"

"A cop investigating a case where her fiancé is the number one suspect? Media would have a field day. You can't be involved."

"So what am I supposed to do? Just sit at home and watch TV while my fiancé goes down for murder?"

"As a courtesy I will let you stay with her, but if you so much as touch a piece of evidence on this case, I will send you home."

"Yes, sir. Thank you."

...

Back at the station, Maura was sitting alone in the interrogation room. All the times she's been in here with Jane or even by herself with a suspect, she never once thought she'd be alone in this room waiting to be interviewed. She crossed her arms across her chest and took a calming breath.

Jane wanted to go in with Maura, but Cavanaugh wouldn't allow it. Luckily, Jane convinced him to let her watch from the observation room while Korsak conducted the interview. She stood there and watched her fiancé. She could see little things that people not accustomed to reading Maura Isles might miss – the slight nervous twitch of her fingers, the steadying breath she took, the deadness to her eyes. That hit Jane the hardest – she loved the light in Maura's eyes.

"Do we have to do this right now? Look at her. Something's off," Jane said.

"She was out of it this morning, like someone else was in her body," Korsak added.

"Is she a drinker?" Cavanaugh asked.

"No," Jane quickly answered. Then she clarified, "I mean, wine."

"Maybe somebody slipped her a roofie," Korsak theorized.

"Yeah. Yeah. The victim was a doctor," Jane said.

Cavanaugh instructed, "Take a tox screen after you interview her."

"We should probably should do a rape kit, too," Korsak said.

"Oh, my god." Jane put her head in her hands. She couldn't bear the thought of something like that happening to Maura. "This can't be happening."

"We have to treat her like anybody else. You know that, Rizzoli."

Jane picked her head up and wiped the moisture that had gathered in her eyes away. "I know."

Frost opened the door with a file in hand. "I just ran a background check on Brad Adams." He handed Korsak the file. "You got to see this."

...

Korsak opened the door to the interrogation room and entered. He sat down across from Maura, not saying a single word.

"Where's Jane?" Maura asked.

"She was removed from the case. I'll be conducting your interview." Korsak paused for a moment. Then he asked, "Did Brad Adams tell you what he did for a living?"

"Yes. He was a colorectal surgeon."

"What did you talk about last night?"

"Art. My work."

"Did you leave the M.I.L.E. benefit with him?"

"I know he offered to give me a ride home. I, uh, wanted to take a cab, but..." Maura trailed off when her memory went blank.

"How did your I.D. get in the victim's car?"

"I'm not sure." Maura shook her head as she thought. "Um... I remember walking past the valet, and then..." Maura sighed as she tried to recall. "Did he kiss me? I ... I think he blew me a kiss"

"Do you remember anything after that?"

Maura's voice became unsteady. "Oh, no. I was in his car."

Korsak opened the folder and pulled out their victim's mug shot. "Brad Adams had a record of theft and drug possession. He owed $39,000 in back child support, and he wasn't a doctor. He was a bouncer at a night club."

"Oh, god." Maura was overwhelmed. She realized the severity of the situation. "Is it getting hot in here?" Maura took off her jacket for the first time all morning, revealing bruises along her arms.

"Where'd those bruises come from?" Korsak asked.

Maura looked down at her arms. "Multiple hematomas. Likely offensive in nature due to the location on the arm. This type of bruising would occur if I ... I threw a punch and it was blocked by someone's arm."

"Are you saying that you attacked Brad Adams?"

"I... I don't know. Maybe."

"Why would you do that?"

"I was provoked? Research indicates that even the most docile human is capable of murder in the right set of circumstances."

In the observation room, Jane was panicking. Her fiancé was in the victim's car and was covered in bruises. She knew how this looked.

Korsak walked back into the observation room. His face was solemn. He knew how bad this was and he did not want to watch his partner and her fiancé go through this.

"What do we do now?" Jane asked as she fought to hold her emotion back.

"We take pictures and process her clothes," Cavanaugh said. Then he left the room.

Jane looked at Korsak, desperation etched on her face. "Do you think that's the right call?"

"We don't have a choice. Better us than anybody else."

As much as Jane hated it, she knew Korsak was right.

...

Jane stayed with Maura for as long she could. She watched as Maura had to be stripped of her clothes. She accompanied Maura to hospital for the rape kit. She took Maura home when BPD didn't need her anymore.

They laid side by side on their bed, hands intertwined between them. They had been like this for a while, comfortable in the silence, both too scared of what might happen.

"Jane..." Maura broke the silence.

"Don't. We both know this is my fault."

Maura sat up, pulling her hand away from Jane's. "How can you say that?"

Jane slowly sat up and faced her body toward Maura, though her eyes were focused on her hands in her lap. "If I hadn't left, you never would have even been alone with that guy."

"You had to leave."

"Frankie was fine."

"But you didn't know that."

"I shouldn't have told you to stay. I should have let you come with me."

Maura reached out and grabbed Jane's hands. "Look at me." Jane slowly raised her eyes to meet Maura's. "This isn't your fault. I'm the one who drank too much and didn't call you for a ride home. I trusted someone I should not have."

"And now..." Jane's voice broke at the thought of Maura's future.

"And now I am home safe. I am fine. No sexual assault, remember? I am okay."

"If something had happened to you..." Jane couldn't hold her tears back any longer.

Maura pulled Jane in to a hug. "I'm okay. I'm safe," Maura whispered into Jane's ear. "I love you."

The sound of the doorbell interrupted their moment.

"I'll get it," Maura said. She pressed a kiss to Jane's forehead and left the room to answer the door.

...

Maura opened the front door to find Frost, Korsak, and a couple of uniforms. She knew what was about to happen.

"Jane!" She called.

Jane came running as soon as she heard Maura call her name. She turned the corner to come down the stairs and she saw them. "No. No." She made it to the bottom and stood in front of Frost. "Let me see it." Frost handed her the warrant. Jane unfolded the paper and read it. "They found your fingerprints and your hair in his car, Maur."

"Oh, god."

"I'm really sorry," Frost said as Jane handed the warrant back to him.

"Maura Isles, you're under arrest for the murder of Brad Adams," Korsak said.

Tears were now freely flowing down Jane's and Maura's faces.

"I'll call your lawyer. Um, should I call your parents?" Jane asked through the tears.

"No. I-I don't want to worry them."

"You have the right to remain silent." Korsak began Mirandizing her as he got out his handcuffs.

"Wait!" Jane cried. She stepped closer to Maura and placed her hands on either side of Maura's face. "I love you. I'm going to get you out of this. I promise." Jane kissed Maura hard. Then she stepped back and let Korsak do his job.

...

The sun rose over Boston signaling the start of a new day for most, but Jane never went to sleep. She laid in bed all night staring at the spot that Maura usually occupied. She felt helpless as she imagined the terrible situations Maura might find herself in. She didn't even know all of the details of the case, so she couldn't even create a plan to get Maura out. But she could put together a plan to see Maura.

Maura's last twelve hours were less than ideal. She had been thrown in a holding room with a dozen other female prisoners – at least one of which held a grudge against her for being "a cop". The bruise around Maura's eye from where this prisoner had punched her was turning purple and hurt like hell. But Paddy apparently had her back. Something Maura wasn't sure if she should be grateful for or frightened of.

When a guard came in that morning and escorted Maura out of the holding cell, she panicked. She thought maybe she was never getting out of this. But then the guard brought her to a private room with a metal table and two chairs and – no, it couldn't be – Jane. The guard took Maura's cuffs off and she launched herself into Jane's arms. She buried her face in Jane's neck and breathed her in before she took a step back and just stared at Jane.

"What are you doing here?" Maura asked. "How did you make this happen?"

"I pulled some strings, called in some favors. I couldn't go another minute without seeing you." Jane looked her over head to toe until she saw it. "What happened to your face?"

"It's nothing. I'm fine."

"It doesn't look you're fine. I'm gonna kill whoever did this."

"Jane, I'm so glad you're here."

"Yeah, me too, I would have never known my fiancé was being beat up."

"No, I need you to get Susie to do another tox screen."

"What?"

"I remembered something. You know how I said the victim blew me a kiss?"

"Yeah."

"There's a drug called scopolamine. It's also called the devil's breath. It can be administered by blowing it someone's face."

"They already did a tox screen. You were clean."

"Susie has to run a specific search for scopolamine."

"Okay. I will get her to do that." Jane placed her hand on Maura's face and Maura flinched. "You're not okay. I hate that you're in here."

"I'm okay, Jane. It's okay." Maura covered Jane's hand with her own.

"I'm gonna get you out of here."

"I know."

There was a knock on the door. A signal that time was up. Jane leaned in and kissed Maura passionately.

"Anybody comes close to you again, you go with your elbow right to the throat, alright?" Maura nodded in response. "Just stay alive."

"I love you, Jane."

"I love you, too."

The door opened and a guard entered. She placed handcuffs back on Maura's wrists and escorted her back to the cell.

...

Jane marched into Cavanaugh's office, a woman on a mission. "Sir," Jane greeted as she knocked and entered.

Cavanaugh looked up from his work. "Rizzoli, what is it?"

"I want to be put back on the Brad Adams case."

"Rizzoli, you know that you can't work a case that you're fiancé is the prime suspect in."

"With all due respect, I don't think you're gonna solve it without me. Maura tells me more than anyone else here. Which is why this morning she informed me that she thinks she was drugged with scopolamine. I have Susie running a new tox screen to see if it was present."

"Rizzoli –"

"I know Maura didn't do this. And we're not gonna be able to solve this without her. You removed the next best thing to actually having Maura Isles. I know how she thinks. I know what her next moves would be. Hell, I listen to her talk science all day. I could probably figure that out, too. The only way you're solving this case is if I'm working it. And I'm not leaving until you put me back on it."

"Fine. But if I hear that you tampered with even one piece of evidence, I won't hesitate to put you in jail with your fiancé."

"Thank you. I will not let you down."

...

"How soon before we find out if it was scopolamine?" Frost asked as Jane entered the bullpen. She had texted them earlier to let them know about Maura's theory and that she was back on the case.

"Susie's on it, but she said it's gonna take a few hours," Jane replied.

"It's a street drug from South America," Korsak explained.

"And it says here it turns you into a zombie," Frost added as he read off a webpage he had pulled up.

"Knew a guy who got dosed with it in Colombia. Dumb place to vacation, if you ask me. The second you're hit with it, you do anything anyone tells you and not remember doing it. He gave up his ATM code," Korsak continued.

"Yeah, it's sometimes used as a date-rape drug, but Maura wasn't raped," Jane said.

"Do you think Brad used it on her to get into her bank accounts?" Korsak asked.

"No. I checked our accounts. Nothing is missing."

"Well, somebody had to kill him. You think he had an accomplice?" Frost asked.

"Maybe. Did you check Brad's financials?" Jane questioned.

Frost quickly pulled up the database he needed and input the information. "His bank balance was pretty low." He scrolled further on the page. "What have we here? A deposit for $9,500."

"The week before the charity event?" Korsak questioned as he read the screen over Frost's shoulder.

"He knew the kind of art she liked, her favorite wine." Jane paused for a moment as she thought. "Maura did an interview a few months ago... with a magazine. I can't remember what it's called."

""La femme vivant" monthly." Frost had begun running a search on Maura while Jane was talking and he managed to find and pull up the article. "This is a big profile. It's all there ... the wine, the art, details about her job."

"He played her. He went to that benefit to find her," Korsak stated.

"And 9,500 bucks in cash tells me he was paid to do it," Jane said.

"And then he got killed for his trouble," Frost added.

"Korsak, you said this drug will make you do anything you're told to do?" Jane asked. "If he wasn't after her money, what was he after?"

...

With a new theory in hand, the team marched into Cavanaugh's office to share what they had so far.

"So, if he didn't rob her or sexually assault her, what did he do?" Cavanaugh asked after getting up to speed.

"Well, we think he was after her I.D. card," Jane answered.

"Dr. Isles' card was swiped to enter the M.E.'s office at 2:04 A.M." Frost added.

"Well, good. Let's get the video," Cavanaugh said.

Jane replied, "There isn't any."

"There isn't any?" Cavanaugh questioned.

"Dr. Isles was under the influence of the drug, which means she might have told him how to avoid the cameras. You can take the funeral-parlor ramp. No cameras there." Korsak explained.

"Yeah, but you don't break into a place unless you want something, So what did he take?" Cavanaugh asked.

"We haven't found anything missing... yet," Jane said.

"But you have prints?" Cavanaugh asked.

"We think he was wearing gloves," Jane said.

"So, you don't have a theory. You've got wishful thinking," Cavanaugh said.

...

After their failed meeting with Cavanaugh, the team decided to check in with Susie and the tech team one more time. Everything in the lab was accounted for – cold storage, specimens, supplies, the works. They were at a dead end. Until Jane remembered the case Maura was telling her about the morning before the event. The case involving bones. That's what made Jane suggest they check bone storage and that's where they found an empty drawer that was not supposed to be empty.

Maura was the only one who could help them solve this. Luckily, Maura's connection to Paddy allowed her to ask a guard for help. This particular guard was already doing favors for Paddy, so it turned out to be fairly easy to bend the rules.

The team was able to set up a connection to Maura via video conferencing. Maura was able to give them information they needed on what was in the empty drawer they found – bones that were discovered at a new mall site. Maura was reluctant to provide more information than that because she didn't have all of the bones and any conclusions she drew would be guesses. Jane was able to convince her that it was better to guess than have their wedding in jail. Frost ran the information they had on the mall site victim through the missing persons database and with Maura and Susie's help, they were able to identify her as 23 year old Sofia Alvarez. Once they had their victim, they needed to figure out why Brad Adams would want those bones.

After looking at the crime scene photos of the bones – and doing a little guess work – Maura was able to determine that Brad and Sofia died the same way. Someone hired Brad to steal the bones and then killed him. The question then was why? Luckily new bones from the site had been brought in that morning. Maura again took a look at them and determined that they were fetal bones. The killer was the father of Sofia's baby.

With this new information, they could run DNA from the fetal bones against DNA from their suspects, which ruled out Brad Adams. After some internet searching they were able to connect Sofia to Tucker Franklin. They frequented the same club where Brad was a bouncer. They ran Tucker's DNA against the fetal bones and got a match. They were certain Tucker was the killer.

With all the pieces in place, Jane, Frost, and Korsak were able to arrest Tucker Franklin for the murder of Brad Adams.

...

Once Tucker Franklin was arrested and booked, the charges against Maura were dropped. Jane raced over to the jail to pick Maura up and take her home where she belonged.

She stood outside of the door, staring through the metal bars, waiting for Maura. She impatiently swayed side to side and bounced on her feet. All she wanted was to see her fiancé. And there she was. Maura walked down the hall towards Jane, escorted by a guard. She was dressed in sweats but god, Jane thought she looked gorgeous.

The door buzzed as it opened and Jane could feel her heart beat faster. Maura stepped out from behind the door and launched herself into Jane's waiting arms. She buried her face in Jane's hair and breathed her in. Jane wrapped her arms around Maura and held her impossibly tight. She whispered into Maura's ear, "Let's go home."

Maura pulled back from the embrace and looked at Jane. She took in every feature on Jane's face and memorized it. God how she missed that face. She nodded imperceptibly in answer to Jane's questions then placed her hand in Jane's as they walked out of one of the worst experiences of their lives.
