I'm a sucker for promises and shared dreams and I think Zoro and Luffy fit that concept perfectly, so here's a little something I wrote on the first day of my summer break. Enjoy!

OF PROMISES AND SHARED DREAMS

"Zoro, what's your dream?"

The question is not unusual, Zoro thinks. Even though he hasn't known Luffy for that long, they've clicked just right as if they've been together since forever. So when the answer comes out of his mouth, Zoro isn't surprised by how natural it sounds.

"I only live to serve you." Luffy is not faced by his words, as if he expected no less from his best friend. "I have no other purpose in life than to keep you safe."

The breeze embraces them both as Luffy lets that unspoken promise sink in. He stares at Zoro, eyes full of stars under a sun that's about to set, flashing that smile that's so so Luffy and Zoro feels warm all over as if he's about to melt.

"Sorry, that's so silly of me."

Luffy shakes his head, breaking into Zoro's personal space. "Zoro's dream is not silly!"

Zoro is taken aback by how serious he sounds. He's so used to Luffy being... well, Luffy, that whenever he looks at him dead in the eye, Zoro can feel the air get stuck in his throat and, for a mere second, he forgets how to breathe.

"Zoro should do what he wants to do." he says and Zoro is oh-so mesmerized that he cannot even speak. "That's what dreams are all about, am I right?"

"Yeah."

Luffy's smile grows wider as he keeps talking, eyes never leaving Zoro's. "If that's what Zoro aims for, then I swear to stay by his side as long as he wants me to."

"Luff—"

"Let's be together for a long time." he whispers and his voice sounds as soft as the summer breeze. "Until death do us apart."

"Sounds like a plan." Zoro says back and his heart swings between the words he just heard. "I'm in."

Zoro is now in his twenties, body full of scars and a long-time promise carried on his back.

The clouds move slowly as Luffy counts them with his fingers, now covered in bandages. The aftermath of their last fight has been tough, yet they've made it out alive. Together.

"Say, Zoro." Luffy speaks after what feels like forever, eyes meeting Zoro's in a heartbeat. "What's your dream?"

It takes Zoro some time to come up with a proper answer. Luffy has asked the same question more than once, yet there's a different tone to it. Like he wants to hear more than what Zoro usually tells him when the topic comes around. So, with all the courage he can muster, Zoro says, "To be at your side."

"Heh, that's unlike Zoro." Luffy says, a smile drawn on his lips and Zoro's heart swells with pride cause that smile is for him and him alone. "I only live to serve you, that's what you say whenever I ask."

"I do live to serve you." Zoro swears as he has done it many times before. "You know that well enough."

"I do."

"I just wanted to make it clear for once, that's all."

Luffy remains silent, his hands coming to rest on Zoro's face. The touch is tender, almost feather-like and Zoro knows. He knows he's too far gone for the guy that's now resting in his lap.

"I aim to be the best just so I can protect you. That's my oath to you."

"Zoro..."

"My life is yours to take, Luffy." he mutters under his breath and it sounds like a secret. A secret shared by them both.

"Until death do us apart?" Luffy says and it feels like they're twelve again, pinky promises and shared dreams. Just like now.

"Yeah. Until death do us apart."
