In the next few weeks, Izuku had an easy time with Class A, as they were in high spirits, with Bakugo and Todoroki engaging in class more. Bakugo due to affirming his belief, but having had an epiphany during the combat section. Many others were on his level, and it's not his talent that would carry him to heroism, but his skill. He can learn, eh? Maybe he'll learn the true spirit of being a hero in due time... Next was Todoroki. His mood and sociability improved greatly since the greenette stood up to his father, and he loved pre-quirk history. Perhaps it was due to his father not seeing value in it that inspired him, but either way, Izuku quickly rose to the position of his favorite teacher. Class B on the other hand... were still resentful of Class A. And of him for defending them before the Sports Festival. However, a Itsuka, Shiozaki and, to his surprise, Hitoshi Shinsou were on his side. With Monoma having been expelled, there was a free position to be filled, and his performance allowed him to join their class. When he arrived in for his first lesson with them after the fact, Izuku beamed, "Shinsou. I'm glad to see that you've been able to join the heroics classes. Have you had a proper introduction to the class?" He nodded, smiling at the greenette, even when his first encounter wasn't so great. "Yes, sensei." "Good. I'll just go over my classes rules real quick: No quirk descrimination in this class, and no putting anyone down for any reason. And, of course, listen to me when I speak. Failure to acknowledge these rules could lead to expulsion, if pushed too far. Do you understand?" His eyes widened at the reveal of expulsion as a possible outcome, but was still determined to be a hero. "Yes." "Good, let us continue..." Today was a darker subject matter, the heroics of the second world war had been elaborated on, but now it was time to reveal what the 'villains' of the conflict did. Today was about... the holocaust. "In the past few weeks, we've discussed the many different battles of the Second World War... but I've only... however briefly... discussed the horrors of war. This was a war of ideas, nasty and dark vs. free and good. The Germans were captivated by the ideology of Nazism as propagated by Adolf Hitler." His image was put onto the board. "He was a man with nothing to lose when he fought in the original war. And due to Germany's loss, he blamed those who were not like him. To put this in context, have you seen those who... hate those with quirks not like theirs? Hate those with mutant class quirks, or quirks labeled as 'villainous'? It's exactly the same..." Itsuka Kendo raised her hand. "Yes, Kendo?" "How is it similar, sir?" "Like quirk bias, many at the time discriminated based on unchangeable characteristics. We cannot change our quirks..." At least not willingly. "...but they didn't have quirks back then. They didn't have that to base things on, so they judged on other things: skin color, eye shape... that kind of thing. Hitler then became obsessed with creating a "master race" of blond haired blue eyed individuals. The method he would do this was sickening." He pulled up a picture of Auschwitz. "This is Auschwitz, the most famous of the facilities the Nazis implemented. These were concentration camps..." Izuku hated talking about this, but it was necessary. Shiozaki noticed his pause, "Sir, what do they do? I'm not familiar with that term..." Most of the class nodded, and Izuku cursed his predicament. Of course they wouldn't know about this. The last time they were ever made was during the first Quirk War. Breathing deeply and steeling his resolve, he continued: "Concentration camps are better known as extermination camps." Their eyes filled with worry when they heard that, The horror is just beginning. "The Nazis rounded up people of 'undesirable quality', at least to them, and shipped them here, and to many other similar places built in lands they conquered. This included those of Jewish descent, Romianians, Slavic People, basically everyone who wasn't German or Austrian. They would work them to the breaking point... dehumanizing them to the best of their ability. Their possessions stripped, their names replaced with numbers, and they were fed very little. They worked hard... menial labor, building their weapons of war... until they were of no more use. Then... they'd kill them off. By the hundreds, each day. Hitler preferred them to use chemical gas, since he'd been hit by mustard gas when he was a soldier." Most of the class was horrified, but many were detached from the situation. "I know it can be difficult to sympathize with the victims of these things... but there is a precedent in more contemporary history. In the first Quirk War, many of those in Japan who had developed quirks suffered a similar fate." That got all their attention. The First Quirk war was just over 500 years ago, but it was fresh in their minds because those in power wished to remember that which the quirkless did to them. It was a part of the reason people didn't care about the quirkless anymore. "The other side, the quirked side, which lost the first time, reciprocated as well, according to evidence found later. Although the governments of the world wouldn't care to tell you, because it contradicts their point about them always being for good. All because of fear and hate." Checking the time, he noted he only had a few minutes left. As he was going to continue, the loudspeaker had Nezu's voice, "Sensei Midoriya, can you come to my office, please?" "Alright, that's enough for today. All I would like for you to do is think about what I've talked about. Anyone can be evil if they allow their fear, and doubt to overtake them. So, as heroes, try your best to rise above those tendencies. That is all." When he arrived at Nezu's office, he was both surprised and disappointed to see that Monoma had returned, "I understand why I'm here now." Nezu, however, attempted to dissuade him from thinking negatively of the former student. "If he apologizes and makes up what he's fallen behind with... in both personality and knowledge... would you not expel him again?" "Not that I really have a choice... but it depends. I will keep a close eye on him. If he really has changed, then he has nothing to worry about. Why do you want to be a hero, Monoma?" "I..." He looked down, "Originally, I wanted to be a hero because I wanted to feel appreciated. My quirk purely relies on others... and I put down those who were a threat to me and my class... but that didn't work." "You viewed the quirkless as a threat?" "Not really... but my parents didn't like them either due to what they did against my great grandfather... I apologize for what I said." His emerald eyes narrowed, before accepting what was told to him. It made perfect sense, as backstories go. But there was something... off to him. For now, though, it was enough. Family grudge... I guess I can accept that. "Well, I am not them. And you are not your grandparents. Be your own person, and stop trying to put down others. Your quirk demands co-operation, after all. If you can do that, I will gladly move on, and accept your apology." They shook hands, and Monoma was surprised, "You are quirkless. I wasn't sure when I met you." "Well, I am." Nezu clapped his paws together, happy to reach a compromise, "Excellent, when can he start?" "Start? His seat's been taken by Hitoshi Shinsou due to the Sports Festival. Where would he go?" "Well... There was an incident related to a student in Class A. Particularly, Minrou Mineta. If you catch him doing anything else inappropriate, expel him without mercy." Izuku nodded, fully understanding that. "Right." He looked over at Monoma, who was carefully listening. That's far more than a normal student... I suppose it relates to him, but I can never be too sure. "I have 1A first thing tomorrow. If I see or hear anything in between now and then, I will do so." "Thank you. Have a good afternoon, Midoriya." "And you, Nezu."
