Buoyed by her parents' support and eager to arrange to see them, Hermione went straight to the desk in her room and sat down to write the letter.

Her parchment and school supplies had not yet been unpacked. From a small drawer attached to her desk, Hermione pulled out a piece of paper and a pen.

The weight of the pen was light and sleek in her hand. She wrote first to Harry.

Hello Harry! I'm thinking about organizing a movie outing with some of our friends. Would you be interested?

Love,
Hermione

Unfortunately, Hermione had no way of sending the letter. She did not own an owl and usually used her friend's owls to send back replies when she didn't have access to the Hogwarts Owlery.

Her parents had a point, she thought. Wizards really were behind on easy communication. She didn't want to have to take care of a whole owl just so she could send a few letters sometimes. Her parents had a landline. Maybe she could try contacting Harry that way? But how would she reach Ron and Neville? Sighing in frustration, Hermione decided to write all her letters now and take them to Diagon Alley tomorrow. She would ask her parents to drop her off in London before they went to work.

Hermione quickly penned her other letters.

Hello Ron!

How's the burrow? My parents suggested I show my friends a movie. A movie is like a picture but it's much longer (1 and a half hours) and there is sound. Would you be interested in going?

Hermione paused and debated telling Ron how much a ticket would cost. It was about 3.50 pounds to see a movie from what she remembered. Scratching out some quick map on a scrap piece of paper, Hermione converted that to 11 sickles and a few knuts. After considering a few moments, Hermione decided she would ask her parents to buy all her friends' tickets to the movies. Hopefully, they would be ok with it.

Let me know if you can make it! It would be in muggle London so you will have to dress like a muggle. Let me know if you need any help with that.

Love,
Hermione

Finally, Hermione penned a final letter to Neville. She wasn't as close to him as she was to Harry and Ron, however this past year she had spent more time with him. When Harry had been busy with the Triwizard Tournament and Ron preoccupied with feeling betrayed by Harry, Hermione had unexpectedly spent a lot of time studying with Neville.

Together they had also been able to figure out a way to help Harry in the second task. Neville had recommended the book where she learned about gillyweed.

Dear Neville,

How's your summer? I know it's probably just barely started. I will have a lot of free time during the day because both my parents work and I was wondering if you wanted to hang out and see muggle London or work on potions? I invited Harry and Ron to see a muggle movie- kind of like a hour and a half photograph with a story and sound. If you want to come please let me know! You will have to dress as a muggle though!

Love,
Hermione

The clock read 3pm. Hermione decided to try her luck in sending the letters today. She pulled a robe from her trunk and wore it over her dress. Then she grabbed her wizarding money pouch and headed downstairs with the letters.

"Hey Mom, would you be able to give me a ride to the Leaky Cauldron? I need to borrow an owl to use to send messages."

Her Mom looked reluctant. "Hmm, I wasn't prepared to deal with more magic stuff already. Will you have to go there to send a message every time?"

"Er, maybe?" Hermione said tentatively. Not owning an owl was quite inconvenient. But so was owning one, she reminded herself. She did not want another responsibility and who knows how well the owl would get along with Crookshanks. "I'll ask if I can rent one for the summer or something."

"Well I guess I can have a cup of tea at that cute little place while you run your errand. Will you be ok on your own?"

"Yes, of course."

"Okay, well let's leave quickly. Parking is going to be a nightmare."
