Chapter Six
"Hey ma!" Sam shouted running into the house after leaving the Lima Bean, "Sorry, I'm late! I went to get some coffee with a few-" He said, stopping when he saw his mother crying and his sister sitting next to her.
"Hey Sammy." Stacey said with a sad smile.
"H-hey… what… What are you doing here? I thought you were gone?" He asked, moving closer to their mom. "Are you okay?
Stacey shot him a look before nodding over to something on the table. Sam looked, seeing a white envelope, he grabbed it and took the note out before reading it.
Mary,
It hurts me to do this but I am no longer happy in our marriage. I've tried to keep pushing but I can no longer do that. I will be out before you read this and will come back to explain to the kids why we are no longer together. I want you to know that it was never you… you were and still are the best woman but I am not the best man.
I am sorry,
Dwight.
Sam shook his head, crumbling the paper and letting out an angry breath. "I'm gonna kick his ass." Sam said through gritted teeth.
Mary shook her head. "Don't. Sammy, don't… he's not worth it." She said, wiping her tears. "It's his loss, we'll be fine without him."
"That's right mom." Stacey said trying to sound encouraging but Sam could tell she was just as mad as he was.
"What do you need us to do?" He asked, squatting beside her and looking at her.
"I just need you to keep being a kid, okay? This is between your father and I and I will handle it. This does not fall on any of you, I just want you to give me a chance Stevie myself." She replied standing up and putting on a brave face. "How about we have some takeout tonight?"
"Sounds great mom, we can eat it out back and watch movies like we used to." Stacey said and Mary smiled.
"Great, well I'll tell Stevie and you two can pick a place." She said before walking upstairs to Stevie's room.
Sam and Stacey both waited until she was all the way upstairs before looking at each other.
"So we're kicking his ass right?" Stacey asked and Sam nodded.
"Hell yeah, the second he comes to get his stuff we're confronting him! That was so careless what if Stevie had found the letter first?"
"He's a fucking asshole and I should've told mom sooner about all this shit… I hope she takes him for everything he's got and then some." Stacey said, shaking her head.
Sam sighed. "We have to be strong for her, she doesn't want to talk about it any further so we can play along. What do you want to get for food?"
"We can just have pizza or something."
"I'll order it, you can get the snacks and drinks ready… I'll get the screen set up and blankets." He replied and she nodded before pulling him into a hug.
"We're gonna be just fine." Stacey assured and deep down he appreciated her saying it. "You know this would be a really sweet way to get that girl you like to come hang out with."
Sam smirked. "She's hanging out with her sister tonight but we're hanging out tomorrow… she's gonna meet me at the Loft to see me perform."
Stacey smiled. "You should get her a flower, not a whole bouquet but a single flower. It'll give it a sorta date vibe."
"You think? Wouldn't that add pressure? I don't want to pressure her… she already said she'd be my date for the party."
"It won't if she likes you." She replied before walking away to get the drinks and snacks.
Sam pulled out his phone to call out for the pizza but before he could he received a text from his dad.
I know you're upset, just give me a chance to explain. Call me when you're ready.
Sam balled up his fist and shook his head before responding.
Don't. You didn't even give mom the same option so don't try to suck up to me now. You better stay far away from us!
He put his phone away and went to put everything out for their movie and promised to make sure they didn't need their dad to rely on anything.
"Hey, can you get the door?" Maia asked Mercedes, they were currently prepping for their girls night right as there was a knock on the door. She nodded, getting up and walking over, she opened the door and let out an excited scream when she saw Santana standing there.
"Hey munchkin!" Santana said, pulling her into a hug. "Damn it's been a while, how are you?" She asked, pulling away.
"I'm good! How long are you staying?" Mercedes asked immediately as she moved to let her inside.
Santana smiled. "I'll be here for about a week or two… where's moma and Popa Jones?" She asked putting her bag down by the door and waving at Maia.
Mercedes walked over to where she was sitting before and shrugged. "I don't know… where are they?"
Maia sighed. "They went to see the Washingtons…" She replied furrowing her brows and Santana snickered. "Shut up…"
Santana held her hands up, walking over and sitting across from Mercedes. "I didn't say anything besides… a little birdy told me that Mercy is going on her first date… that true?" She asked and Mercedes blushed and shook her head.
"We're just hanging out at the Loft…" She replied shyly.
Santana and Maia shared a look before giggling. "So what are you going to wear to this… hangout?" Santana asked.
"Well I went shopping with a new friend and found a pretty dress… wanna see it?" They both nodded and she ran upstairs to grab the dress.
"What happened to that Quinn girl?"
Maia shook her head. "She likes the boy that likes Cedes… you know she's not one for drama so she's down playing how much she likes him."
"I knew I never liked that girl… she was too dependent on Merce staying shy." Santana said furrowing her brows right as Mercedes came back down holding the dress she'd gotten.
"Oh Tulip, that is so cute! It's perfect!" Maia said and Santana nodded.
"Yes chica! It's definitely you."
Mercedes beamed, placing her dress down and sitting down. "I just… I'm nervous. Tina told me he doesn't invite just anyone to see him play so…"
"So he likes you then?" Santana asked and Mercedes shrugged.
"Everyone keeps saying as much… he said he liked talking to me."
Maia shot Mercedes a look. "You didn't tell me he said that."
Mercedes shifted, grabbing the homemade face mask. "It was after I accidentally called him and we talked until it was time for me to get ready for bed."
"Wanky, what did you two talk about?" Santana asked wigglingy her brows at her, making her giggle.
"Just normal stuff… nothing like that."
"Well that's still very sweet and so long as he isn't pressuring you it's a good th-thing- ah excuse me." Maia said before quickly getting up and going into the hall bathroom. Mercedes looked after her before looking back at Santana.
"I hope she's okay… I heard her throwing up last night too."
Santana looked at the bathroom door. "Yeah, she's gonna be doing that for a while…" She said, grabbing the mask mix from Mercedes and waving her over.
Mercedes tilted her head, so Santana could apply it to her face. "What do you mean? Is she sick?" She asked, hearing rustling on the porch. "Did you hear that?"
Santana nodded. "I'll go check." She said, getting up and going to the door right as it flung open, Kenneth and Kevin came inside looking rather angry.
"Oh the wonder twins are here." Santana quipped earning a smirk from Kevin.
"Satan has blessed us with her presence, how long are you staying this time?" Kevin asked and Santana shrugged.
"That's completely up to Maia and Tulip." She said, sitting back down in front of Mercedes and continued to add the mask to her face.
Kenneth looked at his little sister before sighing. "Where is Maia?" He asked, Santana nodded her head towards the bathroom and he just nodded.
"What are you doing, Tulip?" Kevin asked, lightly pulling on her hair.
"We're having a girl's night… we're gonna watch movies and eat junk food." She answered tilting her head to the other side as Santana applied more of the mask to her face.
Maia walked out of the bathroom, letting out a deep sigh and froze when she saw her older brothers sitting there. "Hey… wh-what are you guys doing here?" She asked and Kevin shot her a knowing look.
"Brooks really?" Kenneth asked, folding his arms over his chest and Maia looked at Santana who shook her head.
Kevin moved closer. "She didn't tell us but you should have told us." He said and she sighed.
"Tulip, can you go upstairs?" Maia asked and Mercedes furrowed her brows.
"What? Why? I thought we were going to hang out." Mercedes protested.
Maia looked at Santana who sighed. "Come on munchkin, I need to wash your face off anyway." She said helping Mercedes up and leading her upstairs.
Maia waited until they were upstairs before looking at her brothers. "Look, I don't care how you found out or how you feel about it… I don't want to talk about it yet." She said and the twins shared a look before shaking their heads.
"That's not going to fly." They said in unison.
"I seriously hate when you do that." Maia muttered. "And it wasn't Brooks…"
"Oh please, we know you two have been dancing around each other since you were younger!" Kevin replied.
Kenneth sighed. "Dude, just tell us so we can prepare for it, are you pregnant?"
Maia looked away before shaking her head. "I don't want to talk about it…"
"Tough!" Kevin said, growing angry. "God, how could you be so reckless and with Brooks of all people? Maia, you can't avoid this any longer."
"FINE! YES, I'M PREGNANT!" She shouted and wiped her eyes. "But it's not with Brooks, now leave me alone and let me spend some time with Mercedes."
"If not Brooks then who?" Kenneth asked and Maia shook her head.
"I said I'm not talking about it and-" She started right as her parents entered and their father was sporting an angry expression, while their mother looked confused.
"Maia!" Marcus' voice boomed and Maia sighed.
"Daddy, I know I should have told-"
"Brock Washington!" He shouted and she flinched slightly. "You've been sleeping with BROCK WASHINGTON?"
Lena placed her hand on her husband's shoulder. "Calm down…" She said soothingly. "I'm sure when she's ready she'll tell us everything, right Maia?"
Maia looked at her parents then her brothers before nodding slowly. "I… I promise to talk to at least one of you when I'm ready, yes."
Kevin shook his head. "No, Brock is a year older than us! When did this start?"
"I'm with Kev on this, Maia you've only ever been seen with Brooks and we thought you two were together. It's not adding up, shit we used to play football with him and he has always had girls running after him like-"
"I know! Okay? I know but it's not like that… I guess you're forcing me to talk about this so here goes. He was visiting some of his friends a few years back in New York and we ran into each other. He asked me to lunch and then we just started texting and talking from there… he came back and we went on a few dates and then ended up dating." Maia explained.
"So what about Brooks?" Kevin asked.
"It's not in my place to tell you why we are only friends," Maia replied. "Brock and I have talked this out and he knows why I'm not talking to him now. I will not go into detail because it's none of you guys' business why and contrary to what you Kevin and Ken think, we didn't start anything until after we started dating. Now, I'm going upstairs to spend time with my little sister." She said before storming off, leaving the four of them down there.
Kevin shook his head. "So what are we going to do about this?" He asked and their parents shared a look before snickering.
"We got it from here son, don't you two have to be back for exams?" Marcus asked.
"Yeah, we do…" Kenneth said. "BYE MERCEDES!" He shouted before walking over and hugging their mom.
"BYE TULIP!" Kevin shouted, following suit. "We'll be back after finals."
Lena groaned. "Don't you think you two should be focusing on finding your own places?" She asked teasingly.
Kenneth looked at her like she was crazy. "What? What's wrong with our rooms?"
Marcus shook his head. "They're in our house! It's time, you two are about to graduate and there's no way you can commute for work."
Kevin scrunched up his face. "We could always move back and find jobs here, don't get too excited you're stuck with us." He said before they both left.
"What the hell are we going to do with our kids?" Lena asked, shaking her head.
"We still have Tulip." Marcus pointed out and Lena smirked.
"Not for long…"
Until next time xoxo!
