Chapter Seven
"Do I look okay?" Mercedes asked Maia and Santana. "Thanks for doing my hair, San."
Maia smiled. "You looked beautiful and if you don't hurry, you're going to be late."
"Eh, it's okay you can make him wait a little." Santana teased, touching up Mercedes' make up. "Now, remember what I told you… make him work for that kiss."
Mercedes nodded nervously. "Right, work for it." She repeated as her phone went off and Maia picked it up smirking.
"Oh he's excited!" She teased, handing the phone to Mercedes.
SE: Can't wait to see you!
Mercedes blushed. "I guess I should go… I'll text you when I make it." She said and both Santana and Maia hugged her.
"Just be you and have fun." Maia said.
"Have fun, chica! Do something spontaneous but keep those legs closed!" Santana chimed in, making them both laugh as Mercedes got into her car.
The ride over to the loft was a lot quicker than she expected and she had to talk herself out of making an excuse then leaving. She walked inside, nervously looking around until she felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned and smiled immediately when she saw Sam standing there with a single daisy in his hand.
Sam smiled, looking Mercedes over. "You look beautiful." He said, handing her the daisy.
"Th-thanks… You look great too." She replied, accepting the flower.
"I go on in fifteen minutes, so we can grab a table and order some coffee or something while we wait." He suggested and she nodded, allowing him to take her hand and lead her to the nearest table.
Mercedes sat, nervously biting her bottom lip and Sam smiled. "So Tina tells me you're staying over with her after the game…"
She nodded. "Yeah, we're going to the party together and then having a slumber party."
"So how was hanging out with your sister last night?"
"It was fun! Her best friend came into town, which was exciting because she's basically like another sister so I got to hog all their attention. How was your night?" She asked as their drinks arrived.
Sam looked down at his coffee, sighing. "It was… eventful."
"Oh… you don't have to… I just-" She stammered, sensing that it was a sore subject.
"No, no it's fine. My dad just… kinda ripped our family apart and it's just been a lot." He explained and she shot him a concerned look.
"We could've rescheduled… you should be with them." She said, looking down at her own drink. "I would have understood."
He smiled, reaching over and lifting her chin with his hand. "I know but this helps me clear my head, so you being here is a bonus." He replied, noticing the soft red tint to her cheeks.
She cleared her throat. "What are you going to perform?" She asked, shifting slightly in her seat.
Sam smirked. "Something fun… I heard through the grapevine you're a pretty good singer yourself."
She felt her eyes grow wide. "Wh-who told you that?"
"I did my research…"
She let out a nervous laugh. "Didn't realize I was researchable… but I sing some."
Sam shot her a look. "Sing with me! It'll be fun!"
Mercedes shook her head. "I…I well… I've only ever… I wouldn't know what to sing…" She stammered.
"Alright, you guys our next performer is a regular, Sam come on up!"
He stood, grinning. "Come on, be brave." He said, holding his hand out for her. She looked at it then back up to him before slowly placing hers into let him guide her up to the stage, feeling all kinds of nerves flowing throughout her body.
Sam beamed, getting his guitar out and stepping to the mic. "So I have a guest with me tonight… she's a little shy so be nice."
The people watching clapped and cheered, making her shift nervously. Sam smiled at her as he slowly started strumming the keys on his guitar.
He moved beside her, leaning in. "Just follow my lead." He said and she nodded, nervously shifting.
"Umm… okay…" She said, Sam smiled before he started to sing.
Do you hear me, I'm talking to you
Across the water across the deep blue ocean
Under the open sky, oh my, baby I'm trying
Mercedes swallowed, looking at everyone before Sam came into her view nodding her on.
Boy, I hear you in my dreams
I feel your whisper across the sea
I keep you with me in my heart
You make it easier when life gets hard
Sam grinned, strumming his guitar. "Dang girl!"
Lucky I'm in love with my best friend
Lucky to have been where I have been
Lucky to be coming home again
Ooohh ooooh oooh oooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
They don't know how long it takes
Waiting for a love like this
Every time we say goodbye
I wish we had one more kiss
I'll wait for you, I promise you, I will
Blushing she started to feel less nervous as they continued the song and Sam danced around her making her giggle. It was like something out of a cheesy rom-com and she absolutely loved it until she realized everyone was watching them.
She looked before hearing the loud cheering and felt herself immediately start to clam up again. Sam must've noticed because he quickly thanked everyone and led them off of the stage.
"Wow! You sounded great!" Sam said, when they sat back at their table.
Mercedes shifted, with a small smile. "Thanks… I don't know what came over me." She said, looking down at her cold drink.
Sam smiled, reaching over and lifting her chin. "You did amazing, I was blown away."
She blushed, looking at him feeling butterflies fluttering. "You did too."
"Wanna get out of here?" He asked and her eyes grew wide. "No, no… I mean we can take a walk and just talk.. There's a park like two blocks away."
"Oh, sure! Yeah, let's do that."
Sam grinned, standing and leading them outside noticing the deep breath she took. He could tell she was slightly overwhelmed and wanted to make sure she enjoyed her time. He also noticed that she hadn't let his hand go when he led them out of the coffee shop and had to stop himself from punching the air in excitement like a dork.
They walked in a comfortable silence for a while before he gently nudged her. "So… tell me more about you."
She nibbled on her bottom lip for a moment. "Like what?"
"Favorite thing to do when it's cold and snowing?"
"Don't think I'm lame but we have a nook in our kitchen and my dad insisted on docking a small tv and I'll make me some hot chocolate, get my favorite blank and sit there watching old movies." She answered.
Sam chuckled. "I don't think that's lame, it's adorable. I kinda do the same thing, I'll force my little brother to watch Star Wars with me."
She looked up at him. "Figured you for a Trekkie." She quipped before giggling at his expression. "I have four brothers, I too was forced to watch movies with them."
"Four brothers only seems half intimidating…"
"You would think but my sister is more threatening, she used to beat them down when they would tease me."
"Sounds like Stacey, my older sister… she's this small thing but she will beat my ass over our younger brother."
She smiled. "You seem to really love your siblings, I love mine… I have far too many and sometimes feel like I'm a dolphin among sharks but they protect me."
"I keep trying to imagine the family you're describing, you're so quiet and they seem…"
"Wild?" She completed, laughing. "They are all very outgoing and then I showed up."
He looked at her, shamelessly admiring her beauty. "Are they all as pretty as you? Your mom and sister I mean." He asked, feeling his cheeks warm.
She bit her lip, walking towards the swings. "My mom is gorgeous and so is my sister. I never really thought I was as or less pretty than them."
Sam waited for her to sit before walking behind her and gently pushing. "I would say I'm the best looking in my family but when you meet my little brother all that will fly out the window."
Mercedes looked back at him. "You want me to meet your little brother?" He realized that he might be moving too fast and started to think of something to say to deflect.
"Umm… well he'll be at the game and you will too so I just.."
She nodded. "I love kids, are you ready for the game? I heard it was a big one."
Sam let out a breath, pushing her again. "I think so, the team's pretty pumped. Have you never been to a game?"
"I have but when my brother's played and I was younger so I wasn't entirely paying attention." She admitted, watching him walk around and stand in front of her.
"So this will be your first time seeing me play?" He asked, grabbing the swing, pulling her to him. She nodded, looking up at him feeling the butterflies again as he looked back at her. Sam slowly leaned in, quickly glancing at her full lips before looking back at her.
She didn't seem nervous so he leaned in more only hesitating slightly before softly kissing her. He felt her stiffen at first then relax as she placed her hand on his shoulder, kissing him back. He pulled away just enough to admire her again before reaching up to tuck some hair behind her ear. Gently caressing her cheek, he leaned in again and kissed her one last time.
Smiling, he said. "Come on, let's get you back… it's getting late."
Mercedes blinked, blushing. "O-okay." She replied smiling. She let him help her off the swing before they headed back to her car, they walked in a giddy silence, stealing glances every so often before they reached the coffee shop.
Sam held her hand as they walked to her car, lightly kissing it. "I really enjoyed this."
"So did I, thank you for inviting me." She replied. "It was really fun."
He beamed, opening her car door for her. "Text me when you get home." She smiled, getting inside, waving before cranking up and pulling off. Sam watched her drive away before excitedly punching the air and heading to his car, pulling out his phone and shooting his sister a text letting her know that her idea was great then pulled off to head home.
"Wait, wasn't that Sam? The guy Quinn is interested in?" Bree asked her friend Kitty.
Kitty nodded, smirking. "And here we all thought she was a shoe-in to get Sam's attention when all along her so-called best friend was pushing up on him."
Bree frowned. "I think we should tell Quinn so she can handle her, we can't have one of our own looking bad."
"I agree, let's call her now." Kitty replied, with a devious grin on her face. "Besides, he should be with a Cheerio, not some shy dork."
When Mercedes got home, she quickly ran inside straight to her sister's room smiling from ear to ear. Maia and Santana were sitting on her bed playing cards when Mercedes burst through the door.
"I assume by that silly grin on your face, that you had fun." Maia said teasingly.
Mercedes kicked off her shoes and crawled on the bed, nodding. "It was a lot of fun and he even gave me this." She said holding up the flower Sam gave her before frowning when it fell over. "Must've broken when I put it in my purse."
Santana snickered. "That was sweet of him, so how did it go?"
She let out a long sigh. "It was fun, we talked and stuff… we sang a song together too."
Maia and Santana both dropped their cards, sporting shocked expressions. "You got on stage and sang something?" They heard before Lena popped her head inside. "I heard you come in…" She added, walking over and sitting down beside Maia.
Mercedes' face went completely hot. "Mhm… I did and it was terrifying but also fun." She answered.
"Well now I need to meet this boy because I've been trying to get you to do that since you were four years old."
"Hey, I-I sing… I just don't do it often…"
Maia grabbed Mercedes by the face, turning her to her. "That wasn't all you did, what aren't you telling us?" Mercedes gently pulled away, trying to reign in her emotions but failed because she kept smiling.
"Munchkin had her first kiss!" Santana shouted and Mercedes immediately placed her head in her hands, giggling.
"Did you really?" Lena asked, growing teary-eyed. Maia rolled her eyes, pulling Mercedes' hands from her face.
"Oh my God, you are as red as we can get!" She teased.
"Well did you like it?" Santana asked.
"Yeah." Mercedes finally said. "It was really nice…"
Lena quickly wiped the tear from her eye. "Well, that's all that matters. I don't know who he is but I already approve." She said, standing up, placing a kiss on her forehead. "I'll go so you can finish your girl talk."
"Wait, is it okay if I stay at Tina's? She's having a slumber party and invited me…" Mercedes asked and her mother looked at her before looking at Maia who nodded.
"As long as you give me her address and her parent's information, yes but no boys. I don't care if it's not my house, those rules apply everywhere I'm not."
Mercedes snickered. "No boys, I promise!"
Lena nodded, leaving shaking her head as she heard them grilling Mercedes for information. She walked into her bedroom where Marcus was reading and sat down on the bed.
"So do I need to kill the boy?" Marcus asked, not looking up from his book.
She chuckled. "You know… I don't think that'll be necessary. She seems to have attracted a really nice young boy."
Marcus snorted. "I don't like it, not one bit but assuming it's the same boy I saw at the store, I'm fine if you are."
She sighed. "How is this our life? Four of our kids refuse to move out, one of them is pregnant and the last one is choosing now to grow her wings…"
"I'm building a fence. Keep those four out and Tulip in." He remarked, making Lena laugh.
"I think we're too late. Her date apparently got her to get on stage and sing."
Marcus put down his book, looking at his wife shocked. "Out loud?"
"In front of people too."
"Well… maybe I won't have to kill him." He said, slightly impressed.
Lena just shook her head smiling. "Just maybe…"
After Santana and Maia finished grilling her she was able to let Sam know she made it and they ended up texting until she fell asleep. The next day, Mercedes felt anxious about seeing Sam. She wasn't sure how she should approach him or if she should at all, the only thing she did know was that she couldn't wait to see him. Walking to her locker, she smiled when she saw Quinn standing there before it quickly fell. Quinn looked angry and she wasn't alone, there were two of her Cheerio friends with her.
"Hey Quinn… what's wrong?" She asked when she approached her.
Quinn shot her a look before letting out a huff. "Just tell me the truth, are you and Sam dating?"
Mercedes took a step back, not sure how to answer that. "I- no?"
Quinn looked back at her other friends before she shook her head. "Then why did Bree and Kitty see you with Sam last night?"
She shifted. "We went to the Loft and had a drink and like talked..."
Bree shook her head. "No we saw him, he was all up in your personal space and you were smiling at him too!"
"If you were a real friend you wouldn't have done that to her." Kitty chimed in and Mercedes felt herself growing anxious.
Mercedes shook her head. "No, it's not like that… I didn't do anything wrong! Sam doesn't want you to be his tag and you asking me to ask him after I already told you I wasn't okay with doing it is just mean!"
Quinn looked at her shocked before scowling. "But you knew I liked him and kept hanging out with him and lying to my face about it! You're a bad friend!"
Mercedes frowned. "I am not and you know it!"
"Come on Q, you don't need to associate with someone that will lie to you like that. That's not what a real friend is." Kitty said, grabbing her arm and tugging her away.
Mercedes started to go after her but stopped when Quinn shot her a mean look. "Don't talk to me until you're ready to admit what you did was wrong." Quinn said.
She watched her walk away before going to her locker to get her books for her first class, she wasn't entirely sure how she felt but she knew she was angry and she refused to let whatever that was ruin her day.
"I'm not a bad friend." She mumbled to herself before feeling a tap on her shoulder but when she looked there was no one there.
She turned only to jump slightly when she saw Sam standing there with a bright smile. "Morning."
"Hi." She replied, smiling back at him. "How are you?"
"Better… now. Did you sleep okay?" He asked, grabbing her books.
She felt a rush of butterflies, closing her locker. "I did… did you?"
He nodded, playfully nudging her. "So… about last night."
She looked at him. "It was fun, a lot of fun actually."
They stopped in front of her class. "Good, I'll see you for lunch then?" He asked, handing her her grabbed her books right as the bell rang. "Sure!"
Sam smiled before leaning in and kissing her on the cheek. "Tomorrow's gonna be a blast. I'll see you later." He replied before heading to his class. She blushed before doing the same, excited about lunch and even more excited about tomorrow.
The next chapter will be centered around the football game, the party AND the slumber party. Expect drama, cuteness and more Samcedes goodnesss! Until next time xoxo!
