Derek woke up the next morning. He saw the sun rising from the distance. He smiled as he saw the sunrise.
He got into his new robes and went over to the notice board. He saw his classes that he will be taking weekly. He had breakfast, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Flying lessons, lunch, Charms and Potions.
"Morning Derek." Helena said as she glided towards him.
"Morning Helena." Derek said back to her.
"So, one of your classes is actually gonna be on the other side of the castle. Here's a few secrets for you that'll come in handy to get there quicker." Helena whispered a bit to him.
She then leaned forward and whispered more into his ear of where to go and what passwords to use. Derek quickly took a piece of paper and wrote down the passageways and passwords.
"Thanks Helena. I owe you." Derek said while smiling.
"No need. I've been doing stuff like this for centuries." Helena said.
While at breakfast, he was getting rather excited about what to expect in his first day in class. He got into his plate of eggs and sausage while getting himself prepared for his upcoming classes.
After he ate, he left early to get to the first floor where Defense Against the Dark Arts class will be taking place. Upon arriving, he saw a room that has multiple rows of tables with a long chair for two people to sit on.
Suddenly, his eyes began to glow very bright, giving him an all-familiar burning feeling. He grunted slightly while covering his eyes with his hand in front of them.
'Plutonia! Now what!?' He asked loudly.
'Oh! You'll love this one. This is a special Anti-Jinx power. Your eyes are detecting a powerful jinx in the area. Just let your eyes do the rest.' Plutonia answered with a bit of excitement. Derek began to slowly open his glowing eyes. 'At the ceiling.' She told him.
Derek did just that. Just as he did, a ray of purple light shot out of his eyes and hit the very center of the ceiling behind the hanging skeleton of a Diracrawl. Suddenly, cracks that were emitting bright purple light began to expand from above. The cracks stretched down the walls until an illusion of glass shattering exploded around him. Derek shieled his head and squatted down so he didn't get cut, only to not feel anything at all. He opened his eyes and saw as if nothing happened to the room.
Little did he realize that he broke the jinx that Lord Voldemort placed on the subject from being rejected the position twice in his life.
A little while later, the rest of his fellow classmates entered the room and got into their assigned seats. Professor Lupin arrived from his office and looked down at his students.
"Good morning class. I am Professor Lupin, your new Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor." He said with a smile as he came down the steps and waved his wand at a blackboard. A piece of chalk drew his name on it and more related subjects were being written out for his future classes. "Alright everyone, open your books to page 10." He spoke.
Everyone did just that and they saw that they were gonna be taught their first spell.
"Today, we are gonna be learning the Wand-Lighting Charm. This very simple charm is known for showing light in the dark and it will aide you in many situations. Let's practice it now, without wands for the moment. After me now, Lumos!" Lupin instructed.
"Lumos!" Everyone said at the same time.
"Very good. Now there are many variations of this spell that can be use than just as a personal lighting spell, but that will be taught in a later date." Lupin continued.
During the lecture, Derek's eyes began to flicker with light. He kept on squinting when it was happening. This happened when Lupin joined the class and began to lecture them.
"Stop." Derek whispered with annoyance.
"Mr. Night, is everything alright?" Lupin asked as he passed by when he said that.
Derek quickly rubbed his eyes, and the flickering stopped.
"Yeah Professor. It's probably just the dust in the air or something." Derek half lied.
"You're not wrong. They never seem to get that straightened out. Nevertheless, moving on." Lupin said as he continued on with the lecture. "Now let's practice the spell now. Wands out everybody." Lupin continued.
Derek and the rest pulled out their wands and held them out.
"Now everyone, remember the incantation; Lumos." Lupin reminded them.
"Lumos!" Everyone yelled. Many of their wands lit up at the tip, including Derek's wand. Others either flickered or didn't light up. Derek began hearing other students trying to light the tips of their wand.
After a while, the bell rang, signaling the end of the lecture.
"Alright everyone before you all leave, I will like a parchment of Wand Lighting Charm's origin and how it is effective against magical creatures by next class. Well done nonetheless, class dismissed." Lupin said with a smile.
As everyone leaves, Derek looks back at the professor. His eyes began to flicker once again.
'What is going on!?' Derek asked Plutonia.
'It seems that your eyes are detecting a blood curse in Lupin. Just give it a bit longer.' She answered as they made their way towards his first flying lesson with Madam Hooch.
'WHAT!? A blood curse? This is bad.' Derek thought with his eyes wide as dinner plates.
'It is. We'll figure it out later on.' Plutonia said.
Derek constantly thought more of what to do when he learns more of the blood curse while heading off for his next destination. He ended up having to use a passageway from a Sir Cadogan.
"Sir Cadogan?" Derek asked the portrait of a knight and a wizard.
"AH! How might I be of service to thee?" The knight asked.
"I was told that you guard a passageway that leads to a training grounds." Derek answered.
"Indeed. Just say the password, and I'll let thee pass through."
"Excalibur!" Derek said the password.
The portrait door opened up.
"Pass on through brave lad." Sir Cadogan said with joy.
"Thank you." Derek said as he went through it.
He ended up on the other side of the castle where his flying lesson will take place at. He soon enough arrived at the courtyard where he saw his fellow first years waiting, and a couple lines of broomsticks were waiting.
"Good morning class! Everyone stand to the left side of a broomstick. Hurry up!" A woman's voice called. They did just that.
Derek saw an elderly woman with grey hair, yellow eyes, long dark blue robes, and long brown gloves. She also had a whistle round her neck with a lanyard attached to it. This was Madam Hooch.
"Welcome to your first flying lesson. Now then, stick your right hand over the broom and say 'up.'" Madam Hooch said.
"Up!" Most people said. Many brooms immediately jumped up into their rider's hand.
Derek then raised his hand over his own broom, but before he could even say anything, it already jumped into his arm. One of his fellow Ravenclaw's saw this happen and she was standing next to him.
"You didn't say up? How'd you do that?" She asked him.
"I honestly have no idea." He answered.
"Now, once you have your broom in hand, I want you to mount it." Hooch said as she walked down the lines of students. They all then mounted their brooms and gripped it tight. "When I blow my whistle, each of you will kick off the ground hard. Keep your broom steady in the air a few feet then lean forward and touch back down. On my whistle. Three, two, one." Hooch said before she blew into her whistle.
One by one, students kicked off the ground and they began to rose a few feet into the air. Some kicked off but landed on their face.
Derek flew up a few feet and he just stayed in his exact spot. He felt the rush of excitement of this class and flying. Not only that, but he also thought he can go on to be a professional flier like his ancestors before him.
Suddenly, everyone saw someone screaming nearby. This was because a Hufflepuff girl had lost control of her broomstick. The broom was zigzagging and was slowly getting higher into the sky.
"Ms. Rachels! Lean forward!" Madam Hooch yelled as she went to her own broomstick.
"HELP!" The student screamed as she continued to zigzag in the air.
Derek and the other students watched in horror as this was happening. Derek knew that this wasn't going to be pretty.
'I know I'm gonna regret this.' Derek thought to himself as he began to fly underneath her.
Meanwhile, Madam Hooch kicked off from the ground and flew right to her. She just got right by her until the broomstick shook her off, causing her to fall.
As she fell, Derek flew higher to her and caught her. Derek got a quick grip on his broom and pulled up. They were now flying a few feet above the ground and they landed. Everyone cheered as they approached the both of them. The Hufflepuff hugged him tight from the rescue.
"MR. NIGHT!" Madam Hooch shouted as she landed by them.
Derek sighed as she gave him a glare like an eagle to its prey.
"Madam Hooch, my apologies for what I did. I had to do something." Derek said while looking down in shame.
"No! No, no, no, no! Your actions, albeit reckless and rather dull, was necessary. Plus, it saved me a trip to take her to the Hospital Wing. Seeing you do that reminded me so much of your mother." Madam Hooch explained with a smile.
"My mother?" He asked.
"That's right. That woman was quite the Chaser during her years here, and she did tend to aide those in my classes. More of that another time. Take 25 points for Ravenclaw for your heroic, yet reckless, actions." Madam Hooch said.
Derek smiled as he helped his house gain some points at the start of the year. Some of his fellow Ravenclaws thanked him for his actions.
After his first flying lesson, Derek began to think more of Lupin and his blood curse. He wondered if he had some spare time before his next class after lunch so he can do some looking around. Sadly, this wasn't the case. However, he can look more into it after his last class in his common room's library. He's bound to figure something out on that.
'Say Plutonia, you ever seen a blood curse like this before?' He asked.
'I am uncertain. I wasn't exactly around long enough to think such a blood curse. The only one I know of for sure is Maledictus, a blood curse that causes the victim, a woman specifically, to turn into a beast permanently.' She answered.
That made shivers go up his spine. The very thought of losing one's humanity like that is unspeakable.
'Well, it may not be that. What other blood curse could there be?' Derek asked.
'I don't know. Although, this blood curse seems a bit more dangerous.' Plutonia answered.
As he arrived at the Great Hall for lunch, Derek did some reading himself for his upcoming class, Charms with Professor Flitwick, who was also the head of Ravenclaw house.
"Excuse me? Mind if we join you?" A girl's voice asked him.
Derek looked towards a Ravenclaw girl with long shiny long black hair with freckles on her nose along with another Ravenclaw girl with long curvy red hair next to her.
"Sure." Derek answered. The two sat next to him and began to have some lunch.
"You're Derek Night, right?" The first girl asked.
"That's right." He answered.
"I'm Cho Chang, fourth year. And this is Marietta Edgecombe. Word of your heroicness in a flying lesson spread from amongst Hufflepuffs. Not two whole days of you being here and you're already a hero." Cho said with a charming smile.
Derek chuckled a bit and blushed.
'I won't give in to her cuteness. I won't give in to her cuteness. I won't give in to her cuteness!' Derek thought to himself from seeing her smile and accepting her comment towards him.
"Are you okay? You're turning red." Cho asked with a bit of concern.
'Crap!' Derek thought again. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just not often I get compliments like that from others. Living most of my life in an orphanage will do that." Derek answered.
"An orphanage? You must live amongst Muggles then. I can't imagine the torture you had to go through." Marietta said with pity.
"It actually wasn't that bad. The caretaker was actually a Squib. In a way, she has connections with the Ministry of Magic. Plus, the Muggle kids were really kind towards me. Although…the caretaker usually kept me hidden away when someone came over to adopt. These Muggle parents are very anti-magic." Derek explained.
Cho and Marietta pitied him.
"I'm so sorry. Huh…?" Cho asked when she was cut off from seeing a couple Gryffindor students entering the Great Hall.
Derek looked towards them with a raised eyebrow. He saw one with short red hair, hand-me-down robes with freckles all over his face. The other was short brown hair with green eyes, round glasses, and a lightning bolt scar on his face.
"Harry Potter." Cho whispered.
"Who?" Derek asked.
Cho and Marietta looked at him with shock.
"You never heard of him?" Marietta asked with raised eyebrows.
"Well, I…no." Derek admitted.
"The Boy Who Lived! He's the one who took down You-Know-Who on Halloween night years ago. He's world famous." Marietta explained.
"I was born that night. Unfortunately, I didn't hear much of it in the orphanage. Heck, my own godfather, who works in the Ministry of Magic, didn't talk much of him." Derek said.
"That'll do it. You know, I bet you get this a lot but, I love the color of your eyes. And yet…it kinda reminds me of a slight lecture in History of Magic. There is next to no actual credible source of this but wizards and witches with your eye color is said to have found the Wizarding World itself." Marietta explained.
"Really?" Derek asked. He then got into thought and looked away a bit. 'You want me to tell her?' He asked Plutonia.
'If you want. I doubt much would matter anyway since she is right that there is no real credible source.' She answered.
"Now that you mention it, my family is connected to the last Amethyst Eye Warlock named Plutonia Emerald." Derek said to them.
This caught their attention.
"What are you talking about?" Cho asked like she was about to get the biggest surprise of her life.
As they continued to eat lunch, Derek tells them a bit of his family history while keeping his title of Heir to Ravenclaw to himself.
"You know, you should tell this to Professor Binns, the History of Magic instructor. He might be fascinated by your family's connection and answer some questions." Cho said.
"I'll take that into consideration. But first, Charms class." Derek said as he was packing up.
"You'll like the professor. Good luck." Marietta said before he left.
He soon enough arrived at Charms class. He arrived at a classroom with a few rows of desk facing a desk with a couple blackboards behind it and a pair of windows above them. Soon enough, everyone else arrived and Professor Flitwick got onto his desk and commenced his lecture.
"Welcome to Charms class everyone. I am Professor Flitwick, and today we are going to talk about the perfect wrist movement with our wands, and preparations for our first charm spell. Now everyone, open your books to page 32." Flitwick said to his students.
Throughout the class, Flitwick was teaching them the swish and flick wrist movement with their wands. Derek noticed that when some swished their wands incorrectly, their wands flew out of their hands, a nonverbal spell launched a book to the other side of the room, and even a slight explosion in one's face. To Derek, this was going to be a rather tricky class to get right.
But nothing could prepare him for his last class of the day, Potions.
Derek arrived at the dungeons where Potions class will be taken place at. It was in a large room with a few long tables horizontally where cauldrons stood shimmering on top of a Bunsen burner.
Just when everyone took their seats, another door shot opened and a hooked nose man wearing black robes, and had short black hair emerged from the doorway. This was Severus Snape.
"Any foolish wand waving or any incantations in the class will not be tolerated." Snape said with a rather cold voice.
Derek immediately took note of Snape. His eyes glowed a bit and saw his aura. It was clear that he was bitter and cold hearted, but by the looks of it his heart was in the right place and was caring.
Snape caught on with his eyes glowing.
'Curious. I saw his eyes glowed from the start of term feast.' He thought. "Now class, today we will be talking about the ingredients needed for the creation of the Cure for Boils potion." Snape continued on with his lecture.
Throughout the lecture, Derek took notes of the ingredients needed for the potion, and also was tasked to all the major precautions needed to take for the potion for their next lecture.
When the lecture ended, he was heading back to the Great Hall for dinner. As he ate, he got to work on his homework. Getting through his homework turned out to be easier than he thought. But if there was one thing that was distracting him was the blood curse within Lupin.
When he returned to the common room, he went straight to their library to do some digging around of what he could potentially find. It took some doing, but he eventually found something that might be what he may be looking for.
"Lycanthropy?" Derek asked himself. He read more of what it was and the causes of it. Soon enough, he began to realize more of why his eyes were glowing after seeing Lupin. "That's it! That must be what he's suffering from. But wait, I need to be discreet about this. If people knew of this…it'll ruin Professor Lupin forever. Hmm, I wonder." Derek said to himself before pulling out one of his books and skimmed through hit until he found a spell that may help.
'Derek? You found something?' Plutonia asked.
'I think I just did. It seems that my eyes, theoretically speaking, might counter the blood curse called Lycanthropy, which turns the victim into an uncontrollable, killing werewolf…wait a minute. When's the next full moon?' Derek asked.
'The end of the month. Why?' She asked.
"Because I think my eyes…might be the cure. And I think I know how to confirm it and with this spell, it might come in handy." Derek said as he looked at a charm called the Sun Shining Charm.
Derek had a plan needed to talk to Lupin that coming weekend while there was no classes. It wasn't going to be easy, especially that Lupin might deny such a thing. Will Derek be able to convince Lupin about his theory of the cure to Lycanthropy? Will it work, or will it fail? Find out more as Derek seeks to get the truth he had been thinking of that whole day as the story continues.
Another chapter down. First day of classes were rather successful and then some. So just so everyone knows, there really is no confirmed schedule for Ravenclaws, though there is for Gryffindors. Also, I know that Lycanthropy isn't technically a blood curse. I just wanted to make it seem like it really is. Anyway, I hope you guys have been enjoying this story so far, and don't worry more action and fun is just coming up. TheD-Rock900 is signing off. See you guys later.
