Void and Veil: Chapter 4 - A different perspective
Professor Magnolia P.O.V
Sitting down on the couch with a cup of tea, watching your favorite soap while the night sets in and the kids are upstairs out of the way. The cozy living room had a deep blue carpet and an L-shaped couch, with several white cabinets against the walls most with potted plants on them, the walls with several memories in photo form, and a currently dark fireplace.
*Sip*
"Ahhh," the best way to relax after a stressful day, feeling the pain in my joints dissipate in the warmth of the house. Her last partner, Drednaw's child, a Chewtle lay napping on the other side of the couch a rather large blue turtle with a large head and three rather large orange protrusions, one on each cheek and a spike on top of his head. I needed this, as much as I love my Grandchildren, they don't make life easy.
Sonia was an easy-going bright girl with her emotions on her sleeve, she craved excitement, fun, and adventure but would remain resolute and determined when she chose to do something. So, long as she didn't allow her emotions to rule her like she had today in worry about her brother, which wasn't bad but was time for thought than action, not simply action, and use that intelligence of hers, reign in her emotions a bit she would go far as a trainer.
Jericho was another matter entirely, he was scarily smart, measured, and controlled, and he guarded himself constantly even around Sonia and herself, but he also showed a fierce protectiveness of the few people he did get along with. He had shown this today by calming and defusing the situation, though his people skills could do with some work, when all is said and done he would make an excellent researcher.
I suppose it's to be expected, Sonia tries to find the bright side and kinship in everything, sometimes overbearingly so, but was very smart for her age, she often procrastinated and was unsure of what she wanted, though would go to great lengths for things she did. Whereas Jericho kept to himself and was weary of things and overly paranoid, over analyzing things or just not caring, often taking the logical approach and not often acting on emotion. Two sides of the same coin.
She closed her eyes
Thinking back several years the memories came unbidden, she remembered when she had heard of her daughter's and son-in-law's deaths she had been distraught. Rushing to the hospital to see your dead daughter is something no mother should ever have to go through, and she had left with her bawling and screaming Grandson as soon as he had been released, though nothing could be done for her daughter or son-in-law. She couldn't see their still forms any longer, she had to do something, so she took Jericho home safe.
They never did find out what killed them or why it hadn't taken her precious grandson as well.
As soon as Jericho had been home safe she had called Sonia's friend's house and, where she had been having a sleepover with her friend from school, thank Arceus, then explained what had happened to the parents. Sonia had been rushed back here, Leon's parents had seemingly explained what had happened, to which she had been thankful not having to go through it again.
There had been tears and denial that night, privately she still didn't think Sonia believed they were gone. After her poor bright-eyed Granddaughter had cried herself to sleep. She had gone to get Jericho from one of the spare bedrooms where she had left him asleep, with a few of his toys to hopefully distract the young toddler. Which hadn't been her best idea, but she was fighting her own negative emotions and fatigue, it was one of her greatest regrets.
When she opened the door and found him just standing there staring at nothing she had realized the boy had been affected more than she thought, she knew he would, but hoped he wouldn't remember. In the days that followed, it became clear he had been aware of what happened and how she wished he hadn't, If he had just been a babe a little longer.
She had never seen him cry since, always on edge, he hadn't been a normal child after that.
Sonia had slowly recovered, getting Yamper had helped and having her remaining family close. But Jericho remained the same, if it hadn't been for the small smiles and genuine concern he held for his sister she would have had to of had him checked in with a psychiatrist.
But her own guilt on the matter and desire to keep what was left of her family from being possibly taken away had stopped her just short from contacting one, thankfully it seems that he was simply reserved not numb or apathetic from what she could tell. She hoped having a Pokemon, one similar in thought to him would help bring him out of his shell.
*Beep, Beep, Beep*
"A Call?" I was broken from my contemplation, Pulling the finicky device from my lab coat, which I had left sprawled over the sofa, I accepted the call. "Magnolia residence, Margaret speaking," I greeted.
"Maggie? It's Opal?" Was the response.
I huffed "Of course it is, I can see you, you know," I responded to my friend through the screen, with a Hatterene behind her, a tall creature made from mostly hair and a witches hat with a long tentacle with a 3 fingered claw attached to a gray imp-like being in an opening in the hair where the head would be, like a nest in the shape of a dress, colored from the top blue, the middle pink and finishing with white.
"Haha, indeed, indeed," Opal had taken her hat off for the night, showing her short white hair, her blue eyes dropping slightly. "I just wanted to call you before it got too late and ask after Hatterene's daughter, I know how difficult it can be to find a compatible trainer for a Hatenna, if young Jericho and her don't work out we can find someone else."
I pinched my nose Opal had argued against this, wanting to prevent any stress or accidents from happening with the two youngsters, any other time she probably would have been right, but with Jericho's control and Hatenna's dislike for strong emotions it was a good match.
And when she had heard from Opal about a Hatanne wanting to leave the Bellonlea GYM rather than live in the GYM as the next generation of Pokemon there or go and live in the Glimwood tangle forest, she had offered her help on the matter and put forward her Grandson as a possible candidate.
Obviously, Opal hadn't liked the idea, but ultimately Hatenna had wanted to try and Hatterene had allowed it for her daughter, so Opal had conceded.
Releasing my nose I spoke up, "Everything's fine Opie, Jericho and Hatenna are getting along well, they're both in the library now."
"Truly?" Opal seemed confused, though Hatterene looked quite smug at that, "No issues at all?"
I rolled my eyes, "Only one or two issues that were swiftly resolved upon meeting." I continued before I could be interrupted, "The first, was, unfortunately, Sonia's fault due to her own excitement, she scared Hatenna." Here the mother's face became blank, glaring at me, "Admittedly, I should have informed Sonia beforehand." I Accepted my fault in the matter.
"Fortunately, Jericho intervened before anything untoward could happen," I continued, that got Opal and the mother's attention, "Jericho did? The 6-year-old?, How?" Opal questioned. The witch Pokemon behind her simply tilting her head. "He got her attention and remained calm. Which actually leads to the second issue. Because she was scared, she attempted to access Jericho's mind, I think."
"Oh, Dear," Opal's concern was audible.
"Yes," I responded, "It was concerning, Jericho, panicked and Hatenna enhanced herself in response. Then it stopped, and they were fine, from what Jericho said afterward, he prevented Hatenna from accessing his mind."
At this, Opal looked visibly distressed, though the witch mother was giggling in amusement now. "Mag's," Opal spoke slowly, "That is extremely dangerous and taxing even on a more developed adult mind, it could have killed him." I felt my blood chill.
"I don't know how a child was able to fend off a psychic probe, never mind the full assault it sounds like it became. Under normal circumstances, a probe or link wouldn't be a problem, but because he resisted, the power she was putting into it would have overloaded his brain," Opal finished.
I took a moment to get my recent shaking under control, he was that close to death, and she hadn't even realize. "Will he be Ok, Opie?" I quietly asked, with desperation I could feel leaking into my voice, I needed to know. This was not my specialty.
"If he is walking and talking then, remarkably yes, it sounds like his shield's held, though how I don't know. She is a very strong Hatenna that amount of power could have formed a mental bond and those can destroy even adult minds, it wouldn't have been a problem if it was an older more powerful, and experienced psychic, but both are young and inexperienced," Opal finished.
I let out an explosive sigh, some of my more immediate concern dissipating, "I didn't think it would be that bad or even a possibility, Opie"
"Admittedly nor did I, my fret was over a possible physical or tangible psychic attack due to stress. This is not a normal situation," Opal affirmed with a shake of her head. "You have an impressive if impossible Grandson Maggie," Opal tried to reassure me in a gentle tone.
Getting up from the couch, I began making my way up the stairs to the library. "What should I do, Opie," I asked the old wizard.
"Do?" she returned
"About this situation. My grandson could have died, and I had no idea," My voice was sharp now, I needed to make sure he was OK. though, she heard the Hatterene give a squawk of disapproval.
"Ah, there isn't much you can do Mag's. Separating them could make things worse. Hatenna could become emotional again, and Jericho might not take kindly to you taking his new partner away," The GYM leader stated.
Bugger. 'I have to do something, I won't lose another family member,' I opened the door to the library and stopped dead in my tracks.
There on the crimson-colored sofa lay her youngest family member, face down in his arms, asleep, considering the way his back was rising with each breath. Unusual considering he usually fell asleep at the desk reading, stranger still was the Hatenna sleeping on the back of his head.
"What?" Opal questioned having noticed my pause.
I turned my phone around to show the two of them. Opal released a chuckle, while the Hatterene let out a little coo at the sight. "I think everything will be quite alright Maggie," Opal happily indicated, voice lowered.
I flipped the phone back around, "Yes, I suppose it will." I could give this a chance,"Thank you, Opal."
"Any time Margaret, If everything is well on your end, me and Hatterene had best pop off, we're still preparing the GYM for the upcoming challengers," Opal yawned though Hatterene seemed to pout at that.
"Yes, thank you again Opal have a nice night," I said
"And you," Opal replied. Though Hattene huffed, "Oh, come off it, they are asleep, you can talk when they're awake-" were the cut-off words through the phone.
Sighing in relief with a last look at the two beings on the sofa, I came to a conclusion, I had spent so much time on Dynamax and Gigantamax, I had neglected other fields to an all most dangerous degree, if today was anything to go by, not anymore. She had some calls to make.
A/N: forth chapter of Void and Veil done, I know there will be some mistakes, but let me know what you think of the changed P.O.V.
There will be time skips of every day, well days where not much happens so he won't be staying six for to long and the supernatural will be coming up in 2 more chapters I have several written ahead in draft and beta them and type them up as I go, and when work allows
I would like to thank Sir Da Bomb for their reviews and feed back on such a new story, I will say there is a reason the bond thing happened so early though i guess it didn't come of as well as I thought so It will be stated at some point. Next the Blood by nose was intentional and will be explained later. As a side note I have a tendency to put a lot of description down at one so I am trying to give simple descriptions and expanded on them as I go
