Chapter 2: A Past Occurrence

Something had changed following his duel, Yuya had noted. It was like seeing an opposing Dark Rebellion had awakened another voice in his head that seemed strangely familiar. "Yuya! We need to talk!" The voice said, "I think I know who that duellist was."

"Will you first tell me who you are and how you're speaking to me?" Yuya said out loud, frustrated, when a ghostly figure of Yuto, the original owner of Dark Rebellion, appeared. "That answer your question?" He asked, an amused smile on his face.

"Wait, Yuto? How?"

"I'm not sure myself, but I do think I know who that duellist is. I think I had a run in with him back home!"

"Huh? You care to spill?"

"About 10 months ago I was walking through Heartland when a duellist who I now believe is this guy stopped me and challenged me to a duel. He claimed it was because he wanted to see my dragon. Now I'd been on a bit of a winning streak in the Junior Circuit, and Dark Rebellion had won me more than a few duels, so I decided to humour him, and he lost rather easy. Just summoned 3 monsters in one move and didn't even Xyz Summon. I never saw him after, although he claimed that he'll see me soon. I guess that's where you come in."

"How? Is it because we look so alike?"

"Exactly. Despite the fact that it seems my physical body has stopped existing, you look so alike that you were mistaken for me."

"You don't think that he wanted Dark Rebellion to be summoned in your duel?"

"Potentially, but I'd hope not. Anyway, we should probably go get some rest. I have a feeling we'll need it given the nature of our mission."

Meanwhile at LEO Corp

"Sir, we have finished the analysis of the duel. Sakaki's opponent Xyz summoned with enough force that you'd think he came from the Xyz dimension, however that doesn't seem to be the case. Also, Sakaki's own Xyz summon was even stronger." A LEO employee informed Declan,

"Interesting," Declan mused, "Can you tell me about the cards used?"

"Well, they seem to follow a principle of summoning higher and higher ranked Xyz monsters, much like Shay, although none of our systems recognised the cards. Also, there are only 2 recorded Rank 13 monsters beforehand, both of which are lost to space and time."

"So Rank 13 isn't new?"

"No sir. During the 'Number Wars' as history books from the Xyz dimension that we recovered have called it, two individuals are recorded using them, but they both were extra-terrestrials. The cards disappeared before the introduction of the Digital Recognition System so neither card is playable let alone known."

"But this rank 13 was in the DRS?"

"Sort of. The card is assigned an identifier, however, according to the system, the ID is completely blank."

"Intriguing. Are the cards I've asked you to prepare ready?"

"No sir, but by the time of departure they will be."

"Good. I don't want my Lancers going into this war without the power of Pendulum." With that, the president left, his day now over. Despite this, he couldn't help but think about Yuya's opponent. Who are you Ren, and what do you represent? He wondered.

The next morning

After a rather fitful night of sleep where he was constantly dreaming of what was happening to Zuzu, Yuya was ready to save her from the Fusion Dimension. "Let me brief you on our first operation as Lancers," Declan spoke up, having recently announced that his younger sibling Riley would be coming along, despite the objections of the other Lancers, especially Shay, "We won't be going to Fusion right away. Instead we will go to the Synchro Dimension first to find their best duellists. We will see if those duellists will fight alongside us, then, and only then, will we go after Duel Academy."

Hearing this, Shay exploded, "You said we'd be fighting Fusion! Not going on some diplomatic trip where we don't even know if Obelisk Force has attacked alongside taking a CHILD! I might have been patient once, but you said we'd be going to Duel Academy, and now you're saying we're not!"

"Calm down Shay. Yes, I did say that we would be going to Fusion to fight Duel Academy, but if you paid any attention, I never specified that we would be going there first. Synchro duellists might prove useful, and if not, at the very least, we may be able to help them prepare." Declan said expertly diffusing Shay's temper. Shay huffed, but he relented. "Now, if you'd prepare to activate the Spell Card I gave you. This card is our dimensional transporter. It is loaded with coordinates in the Synchro dimension that you will be deposited at. They may be different, so don't worry if we split up. If that happens, head to the largest monument you can see that is as high up as possible."

After a bit more of a brief, the Lancers were ready, and they played the spells, instantly turning their bodies into purplish energy. What felt like a second later, Yuya was aware that his surroundings had changed, now placing him in an alley with Celina, Riley and Sylvio. Not even a minute after they arrived, some people who looked like police officers calling themselves Sector Security arrived calling for them to surrender as they had warrants for Yuya and Celina's arrest, which they achieved by just pointing at them and saying "Put your duel disks down! You are all under arrest!" Which both Celina and Sylvio didn't take too well, and started duelling them.

"Well they certainly don't listen," Yuto observed, "That would've served them well in the resistance. But now Yuya, I believe we need to run instead. They certainly won't hold back with calling reinforcements if we resist."

"But won't we BE resisting by running away?"

"There's a lot less they can do while you're running compared to when you are duelling."

"Good point." With this, Yuya grabbed Riley who was hanging around him, and started to run. "Guys! Come on!"

"And not show them what a spectacular duellist I, Sylvio Sawatari, am?"

"If you value freedom." A voice rather unlike Yuya's said, seemly annoyed at Sylvio's reluctance. Sylvio, who very much valued his freedom, decided to turn tail, and along with Yuya, Celina and Riley, he started running along the rooftops looking for a place to hide out.

After a particularly long chase, Security seemed to relent, either having given up or lost them, although Yuya suspected the latter. They decided to camp out in a seemingly abandoned building that looked like it had seen much better days. "That was close," Yuya sighed, "I didn't think we'd actually get away!"

Sylvio had only just managed to catch his breath when he remembered what Yuya had said before they ran, but more specifically at HOW it was said. "Say Yuya," he asked, "What was with that gruff 'manly man' voice before?"

"Oh yeah," Celina noted, "Now that he brings it up, it did sound like someone else spoke."

"Oh, you heard him?" Yuya asked, "It's a bit of a long story, so bear with me a second while I figure out how I'm going to explain this." This didn't help the confusion from Sylvio and Celina, both of whom were getting more worried, not just about Yuya, but now their situation. After a half hour of Yuya explaining, only that long because Sylvio got details wrong so often, they finally turned their attention to the matter of food and water, but outside, someone new was approaching, the sound of a Duel Runner's tires squealing against the rough tarmac of the Synchro dimension.

They heard what sounded like a key turning in a lock, and they all jumped to defence, ready to attempt to fight off anyone who came in, but what shocked them was how a man not much older than them entered, seemingly unknowing to their presence. He carried himself with an air of peace, his otherwise unusually perfect, at least by what they'd seen so far, skin marred by a yellow tattoo that was seemingly quite common over here. He brought in an odd bike that was red with a curved seat and two arms on it that seemed to be both roll cage and throttle. Attempting to stick to the shadows, Yuya and co. were as quite as could be, trying to get out of what they now realised was a garage before this stranger noticed. This plan was foiled however when Riley tripped on a slightly raised part of concrete, alerting the stranger to their presence. "Who's there?" he asked, his voice, like his walk confident yet peaceful, "I won't hurt you," he called, "I just want to know who is there and why."

Their cover blown, Yuya, Sylvio, Celina and Riley exited the shadows to face this new person. "Sorry about that," Yuya apologised, "We mean no harm. Those Sector Security people were chasing after us, so we hid in here."

"Ah," the man mused, "Security huh? Well, that's fine, my name is Yusei Fudo. Turbo duellist by trade and one of Security's biggest pains in the back."

"Nice to meet you, Yusei. My name is Yuya Sakaki, and these are my companions Celina, Sylvio, and Riley."

"Same here, Yuya. So, what were Security chasing you lot around for anyway?"

"I'm not sure. Something about they had a warrant, but we'd just arrived in this city."

"Strange. Security rarely goes after foreigners, but what is a visitor doing in Commons? I thought all visitors were only allowed in the Tops."

"Well, I don't think we are visitors like what you usually get!" Sylvio excitedly interjected, "We are here on a diplomatic mission looking for the best duellists here to help us fight a really strong enemy!"

"Really?" Yusei asked, a small smile now on his face, "Well if that's true, I suppose you'll want to speak to The King."

"The King? Who's that?" Celina asked,

"Only the strongest duellist that New Domino knows. Of course, I'm sure I'm better, but who doesn't?"

"And his name?"

"Jack Atlas. Only issue is that in order to speak to him you'll need to win the Friendship Cup."

"Friendship Cup? What's that?" Yuya asked,

"A Turbo Duelling tournament where both Tops and Commons can come together to duel."

"You keep mentioning 'Tops' and 'Commons'. Would you care to explain?"

"Certainly. New Domino is divided into two classes, the Tops and the Commons. The Tops are the rich and we, the Commons, are the poor. Funnily enough, I still remember a time about 17 years ago where there was no such thing as a 'Topsider' or a 'Common'. But then the first Spire was erected, and everything changed."

"Oh." Yuya said dejectedly. This was only going to make their mission harder. "Are you going to be entering this 'Friendship Cup?" he asked,

"Why wouldn't I? It's about high time Jack got dethroned, and I'm going to be the one to do so."

About a week later

Yuya and his companions had been living in the space above Yusei's garage for about a week, and the Friendship Cup was on the horizon. Yuya was looking through his deck when a now familiar voice said "Hey Yuya, I was thinking about how we haven't duelled yet! And I pride myself on tradition, and isn't it so that when two duellists meet, they should duel?"

"Oh yeah! Just give me a minute?"

"Sure. Just come out back when you're ready."

After Yuya had assembled his deck, he headed out back where Yusei was waiting. "Just so you know," Yuya said, "This duel might be different to what you're used to, as we shall be Action Duelling."

"Action Duel? What's that?" Yusei asked,

"An Action Duel is a type of duel played on an Action Field. It will allow us to interact with our monsters, but also Action Cards will be scattered. For the most part, they are effectively Quick-Play Spells that can be played from the hand at any time, but you can only hold one in your hand at once."

"Very well, let's get this started then!"

"Ok!" and as that was said, both duellists engaged their Duel Disk, Yuya's announcing "Generating Action Field: Crossover."

"Let's Duel!" Both duellists announced, and the duel began

Yuya: 4000 LP

Yusei: 4000 LP

Turn 1: Yusei

"I'll take the first turn," Yusei said, "And with it, I activate the spell card Foolish Burial to send my Revival Synchron to my graveyard! Then I special summon my Junk Forward which I'm allowed to do since I control no monsters! I then normal summon the tuner monster Junk Synchron! Junk Synchron's effect allows me to revive Revival Synchron!"

Junk Forward: Level 3, 1500 DEF

Junk Synchron: Level 3, Tuner, 1300 ATK

Revival Synchron: Level 2, Tuner, 0 ATK

"When Revival Synchron is summoned from the Graveyard, it is no longer treated as a tuner! This now allows my level 3 Junk Synchron to tune with level 3 Junk Forward and level 2 Revival Synchron! Now spread your brilliant wings and open a path to the future! I Synchro Summon! Level 8, Stardust Dragon!"

Stardust Dragon: Level 8, 2500 ATK

As Yusei's dragon emerged, it roared, the force of which threatened to blow Yuya away. "Wow, that's some dragon!" Yuya exclaimed,

"If only we were Turbo Duelling. Then I could show you something truly amazing. And with that, 2 face downs ends my turn!"

Turn 2: Yuya

"Alright! It's my turn! I draw. This allows me to set my pendulum scales with scale 8 Timegazer and scale 1 Stargazer Magicians! I'm taking control of this duel, starting now!" Yuya called, placing his magicians in the farthest zones of his duel disk, "I'm now allowed to summon monsters from levels 2 through 7 all at the same time. Swing far pendulum, carve the arc of VICTORY! My monsters are ready, to swing into action!" As he said this, three beams of light emerged from the portal generated by his magicians, "Now say get ready to slice and dice Performapal Sword Fish, sharpen your claws Performapal Silver Claw, and turn up the heat Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon!" Yuya's monsters all appeared in a flash of light, surprising Yusei.

Performapal Sword Fish: Level 2, 600 DEF

Performapal Silver Claw: Level 4, 1800 ATK

Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon: Level 7, 2500 ATK

"Pendulum Summon? What's that?" Yusei asked,

"Only a type of summoning method I invented myself!" Yuya replied, "Now I activate Sword Fish's special ability! It allows me to reduce your Stardust Dragon's ATK Points by 600! Draining Slash!" As Yuya said this, 6 spectral copies of Sword Fish appeared, imbedding themselves in the ground near Stardust.

Stardust Dragon: 2500 ATK - 1900 ATK

"Now my Odd-Eyes attacks Stardust with Spiral Flame Strike! And since Stardust is a Level 5 or higher monster, Odd-Eyes deals double damage! Inferno Tempest!" The orbs all along Odd-Eyes' body started to light up as the dragon itself let a massive stream of flame out, ready to incinerate Yusei's dragon.

"Not so fast, I activate my Scrap Iron Scarecrow trap! This trap negates your attack!"

"Due to Timegazer's pendulum ability, I can reverse the activation of one trap card when a pendulum monster I control battles!"

"I activate my other face down! Scrap Iron Statue! Since a spell card that was already face up activated its effect, this card negates that activation, then destroys that card! So my Scarecrow goes through."

Yuya grit his teeth at this. He'd not expected Yusei to pick up that Pendulum monsters were treated as continuous spells in the pendulum zone so quickly.

"And that's not all!" Yusei continued, "Both my traps set themselves face down instead of going to the graveyard!"

As Timegazer exploded, Odd-Eyes' attack was intercepted by Yusei's first trap. "In that case, Silver Claw attacks, its own ability giving it 300 extra ATK until the end of the battle! Silver Slash!" Yuya's wolf jumped into the air, its claws gleaming and as it came down, its ATK increased.

Performapal Silver Claw: 1800 ATK - 2100 ATK

"By banishing Revival Synchron, Stardust Dragon isn't destroyed in this battle!" Yusei declared,

"But you'll still take damage!"

Yusei: 4000 LP - 3800 LP

"At the end of the battle Silver Claw's ATK returns to normal."

Performapal Silver Claw: 2100 ATK - 1800 ATK

"I end my turn. Stardust's ATK now returns to normal." Yuya said

Stardust Dragon: 1900 ATK - 2500 ATK

Turn 3: Yusei

"It's my turn! Draw! I activate the spell card Banish Return! This allows me to summon my Revival Synchron from being banished!" Yusei's second Synchron returned, its small body glittering in the refracted light.

Revival Synchron: Level 2, Tuner, 0 ATK

"Then because I summoned my Synchron from being banished, I can Synchro Summon using a monster you control as well, although both will be treated as level 1." At this moment, Yusei's dragon roared, seemingly at him "Are you saying its possible Stardust? Well let's try it. I tune my Stardust Synchron to your Odd-Eyes! Go, Synchro Summon! Rev your engines Formula Synchron!" A monster that looked like a car with arms of some sort appeared.

Formula Synchron: Level 2, Tuner, 1500 DEF

"Stardust! Let's fly to achieve the power of Accel!" Yusei called, his dragon picking him up and swooping around the field, catching the air under its wings, rapidly accelerating. Yuya was rather confused at this, but found an action card that would prove useful, especially since he had lost Timegazer and Odd-Eyes. "Yuya, you know how I said that if we were Turbo Duelling I could show you something special? Well here it is! CLEAR MIND! I now tune my level 2 Formula Synchron with level 8 Stardust Dragon! Go! Accel Synchro Summon! Rise the dragon from beyond this world! Level 10 Shooting Star Dragon!" As this new dragon emerged, it caught Yusei before returning to the ground.

Shooting Star Dragon: Level 10, 3300 ATK

"Thirty-three hundred attack?" Yuya asked, a bit nervous at this.

"I activate Shooting Star Dragon's ability! By revealing the top 5 cards of my deck, Shooting Star Dragon can attack as many times as I reveal tuners by this effect! Shooting Star Rise!" Yusei revealed the top 5 cards of his deck, 3 tuners among them.

"Shooting Star Dragon now attacks both your monsters! Shooting Star Rush!" Both Yuya's monsters were destroyed, dealing a lot of damage to Yuya.

Yuya: 4000 LP - 2500 LP

The onlooker's eyes widened as they realised that Shooting Star Dragon could finish it now.

"Attack Yuya directly and end this duel! Shooting Star Crush!" Yusei called,

"I activate the action spell card Direct Reshoot! This card stops your attack then allows me to summon a level 4 or lower monster from my deck, as long as I negate its effects and reduce its ATK and DEF to 0! So I call out my Performapal Salutiger!"

Performapal Salutiger: Level 4, 1700 ATK- 0 ATK

[Direct Reshoot: Normal Action Spell: If your opponent attacks you directly, negate the attack, and if you do, special summon one level 4 or lower monster from your deck by negating its effects and reducing its ATK and DEF to 0. You can only activate one "Direct Reshoot" per duel.]

"Impressive. I end my turn there." Yusei smirked,

Turn 4: Yuya

"I draw!" I start things off by activating my Pendulum Call spell card! By discarding my Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer, I can add my Wisdom-Eye and Dragonpit magicians! I rebuild my scales by adding scale 5 Wisdom-Eye to the zone! I now pendulum summon my Performapal Silver Claw from my Extra Deck!"

"What?" Yusei exclaimed,

"That's right, now come forth!" Yuya's silver wolf reappeared, looking angrier than it did before.

Performapal Silver Claw: Level 4, 1800 ATK

"Now I use my level 4 Performapal Silver Claw and Performapal Salutiger to build the Overlay Network! Cloaked in shadows and relentless in its objective, I call upon the most dangerous of dragons! I Xyz Summon! Rise, Rank 4, Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon!"

Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon: 2500 ATK, 2 ORU

"Let me guess, you invented this one as well?" Yusei asked,

"No, but I got this card from a dear friend," Yuya replied, "I now activate Dark Rebellion's ability twice! By using its overlay units, it halves your dragon's ATK twice, then Dark Rebellion gains those ATK points! Treason Discharge!"

Shooting Star Dragon: 3300 ATK - 825 ATK

Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon: 2500 ATK - 4975 ATK, 2 ORU - 0 ORU

"That's going to be over 4000 damage!" Sylvio called out from the sidelines,

'Now, go Dark Rebellion! Mauling Mandible Charge!"

Yusei was unable to find an action card in time, and he was hit by the blast defeating him instantly.

Yusei: 3800 LP - 0 LP

Yuya wins!

"Well, that was fun," Yusei noted, "Those cards are rather strong. Even with my Shooting Star Dragon, I couldn't beat you."

"What was that Accel Synchro thing you did?" Yuya asked,

"Its where a synchro monster tunes another. Only issue is it requires a lot of speed normally only obtainable with a duel runner," Yusei explained, "Due to the risk associated with it, few can Accel Synchro, especially since it requires a state of Clear Mind which is rather hard to achieve," Yusei at this got a nostalgic look on his face, as if he was remembering an event a long time ago, "if done properly, you can also do it on your opponent's turn, believe it or not, but I have stopped doing that after an accident caused by my opponent's rage at having his turn, and thus his plays completely ignored." Unfortunately, Sector Security arrived at this point, having been directed there due to an explosion of unusual summoning energy. The group was arrested however Riley was saved by Moon Shadow before Security could get them.

This moment was interrupted, however, when a few people wearing really strange outfits arrived claiming that the group was under 'The High Council's' protection and that Security had no authority over them anymore. As such, Yuya, Celina, Sylvio and now Yusei got escorted into an airship to be taken to the High Council's chambers.

Hey all,

Thanks for all the support on the last chapter. To be entirely honest, I didn't expect to get as many views or story followers as I did! I apologise if the PSCT on my Custom Cards is incorrect, I don't have much experience making cards, and I also apologise if I butchered Accel Synchro Summoning. My attempts to see what the process is like were, for lack of better words, fruitless and I couldn't find much.

To answer the question I received;

Godofwar01 – Perhaps. This may come up in a later chapter.

I hope you all are looking forward to the next chapter where the Friendship Cup begins!

As always, thanks for reading, and if you like my story so far, please do consider leaving a follow or even a favourite, and if you have anything you wish to say about this story, please do review.
