Chapter 21: The Champion's Throne
Zarc had been nervously pacing in the dressing room, preparing for the final duel. There was so much riding on the duel that he was worried that he'd be too stressed and misplay, losing the Championship as a result. Flicking through his deck once again, he looked over his variety of dragons, and he could feel all their duel spirits smiling back at him, especially the four 'special' dragons, as he called them, being Dark Rebellion, Starving Venom, Clear Wing and Odd-Eyes. Taking a deep breath, he placed the deck in the holder, and he stepped out, activating the duel disk when he and his opponent were in their starting positions.
"And now we bring you the final match of this year's Domino Championship! The up and coming Zarc has beaten any opponent he comes across with ease and almost indifference, displaying some of the best dueling we've ever seen, but his opponent is a man of seemingly few words, the little we know of his personality as cold as the deck he runs, its Kori!" As the announcer said this, cheers went up from the stands, Zarc taking a look around. He almost immediately regretted it, as he saw a concerningly large group of young girls all wearing bright pink and red, signs saying stuff like 'We Love You, Zarc!', which slightly embarrassed the dragon duelist, not expecting to have fan girls already.
"So, you're the one who 'saved' her, aren't you?" Kori asked, his tone soft, like snow in a light breeze,
"Yeah, and? I'll put you in your place, then win this duel!" Zarc declared,
"Very well,"
"Let's Duel!" They both declared, starting the duel.
Zarc: 4000 LP
Kori: 4000 LP
Turn 1: Kori
"I'll go first and set my entire hand face-down. That's it." Kori said, almost unintelligibly,
"What?" Zarc asked himself, "Five face-downs on the first turn?"
Turn 2: Zarc
"Well, in that case, let me get the show started! I summon Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm, who's effect gives me another 'Supreme King' monster, being my Supreme King Dragon Lightwurm, who I then summon, by its own effect!" Two monsters appeared on Zarc's field, one the first 'Supreme King' card he had obtained, the second a relatively recent one that looked like Darkwurm, but had lighter scales, almost an off white, instead.
Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm: Level 4, 1800 ATK
Supreme King Dragon Lightwurm: Level 3, Tuner, 1200 ATK
"Now, level three Lightwurm tunes level four Darkwurm! Beat your wings and whip up a storm of joy! I Synchro summon, level seven, Clear Wing Synchro Dragon!" One of Zarc's ace monsters emerged, pridefully flaring her wings.
Clear Wing Synchro Dragon: Level 7, 2500 ATK
"Go Clear Wing! Attack directly with Spin Storm Sky Strike!" Clear Wing charged at Kori, but the man smiled,
"Trap activate. Lost Wind. Your monster's attack points are halved and its effect negated. This allows me to activate my Synchro Support trap card since there is a synchro monster who's attack points are different from its original on the field. It summons a token with the same statistics as your dragon originally had." As Clear Wing's wings faded, said token appeared on Kori's field.
Clear Wing Synchro Dragon: 2500 ATK - 1250 ATK
Token: Level 7, Tuner, 2500 ATK
"I end my turn with a face down card then." Zarc said, calling off the attack.
Turn 3: Kori
"I now activate my spell that I just drew, Supporting Destruction. By destroying spell or trap cards I control, I can summon monsters who's levels equal the number of cards destroyed. I destroy all my traps and Supporting Destruction itself. I summon my level one Hexa, Spirit of the Ice Barrier and level 3 Defender of the Ice Barrier."
Hexa, Spirit of the Ice Barrier: Level 1, 400 ATK
Defender of the Ice Barrier: Level 3, 1600 DEF
"Now, my level seven token tunes with level one Hexa and level three Defender. Dragon encased in ice broken free! Unleash your fury and put this duel on ice. Synchro summon. Level 11, Trishula, Zero Dragon of the Ice Barrier, be free!" A larger, more ferocious version of the monster that had defeated Ray appeared, unleashing three roars that chilled the air to almost dangerous levels.
Trishula, Zero Dragon of the Ice Barrier: Level 11, 2700 ATK
"Zero Dragon's effect banishes up to three cards, so I banish all three."
"Not so fast! When a monster summoned only using 'Supreme King' monsters, or one thereof, I can activate Supreme King's Retreat to return Clear Wing to the extra deck and summon its materials in defence mode. Return to me, Darkwurm and Lightwurm!" As Clear Wing roared, it narrowly dodged the bolts of ice as it disappeared and was replaced by the two smaller dragons. Zarc's other face-down wasn't so lucky, however, and was banished.
Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm: Level 4, 1200 DEF
Supreme King Dragon Lightwurm: Level 3, Tuner, 1800 DEF
"Darkwurm's effect adds my Supreme King Dragon Darkseer to my hand while Lightwurm's effect adds Supreme Disdain from my deck to my hand."
"Then Trishula attacks Darkwurm." Zarc's dragon was quickly engulfed in ice, which shattered, destroying the dragon. Hearing the scream that came from it, Zarc flinched slightly, "I end my turn." His opponent stated.
Turn 4: Zarc
"Very well, I shall summon Supreme King Dragon Darkseer, who's effect activates! I can now target one 'Supreme King' monster with a different attribute from Darkseer and summon a 'Supreme King' monster with a different name, but the same attribute. I target Lightwurm to summon Supreme King Dragon Lightseer, who's effect also activates, summoning Darkwurm back from the graveyard, but its effect is negated." Zarc's monsters appeared, Darkwurm returning in defence mode, but in attack mode was a black-ish grey dragon with twisting horns and a far-away look, joined by its LIGHT counterpart.
Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm: Level 4, 1200 DEF
Supreme King Dragon Darkseer: Level 3, 1000 ATK
Supreme King Dragon Lightseer: Level 4, 1400 ATK
"That's not all, though. I activate a field spell: Supreme King Dragon's Lair! This is a special field spell, which grants me the ability to summon as many monsters as possible from my deck, up to the number of 'Supreme King' monsters on the field. I shall summon one monster, as that is all I have the space for. Dragon with dichromatic eyes, come join us and show us some fun! I summon Odd-Eyes Dragon!" Zarc's newest addition joined his field, roaring in joy like Clear Wing.
Odd-Eyes Dragon: Level 7, 2500 ATK
"My field spell has another effect! If I would Fusion, Synchro or Xyz summon, as long as all the materials are 'Supreme King' monsters, I can change one material's attribute or level, but only to that of another monster on the field. I shall change Lightwurm to DARK attribute, and I can also fusion summon without a spell like Polymerisation, once per turn! I fuse the DARK attributed Darkseer and Lightwurm! Dragon with fearsome fangs and toxic venom, come on out and show everyone why that doesn't define you! I Fusion Summon! Starving Venom Fusion Dragon!" Zarc's second obtained dragon emerged, roaring from the various 'mouths' that its body had.
Starving Venom Fusion Dragon: Level 8, 2800 ATK
"Then I overlay level four Darkwurm and Lightseer! Despite being cloaked in shadows, this dragon more than knows how to show you a good time! I Xyz summon, Rank 4, Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon!" Now with three of his dragons on the field, they all roared, Zarc hearing their voices calling for the last one.
Dark Rebellion Xyz Dragon: Rank 4, 2500 ATK, 2 ORU
"Now, you've already seen the last member of my troupe, but what is a show without the full main cast? The last effect of my Lair activates! By banishing it, I can summon two 'Supreme King' monsters from my graveyard, but they are banished should they leave the field, which will occur automatically in my end phase, and with their effects negated. I summon Dark- and Lightwurm back to the field, but I then tune them! I Synchro Summon the last member of our cast, Clear Wing Synchro Dragon!" Zarc now had all his dragons, their voices loud and clear as they faced down Kori's three headed behemoth.
Clear Wing Synchro Dragon: Level 7, 2500 ATK
"Starving Venom's effect activates! I can negate your monster's effects then claim them as my own. Then I shall attack! Starving Venom, Venomous Drenching!" A miasma quickly engulfed Trishula, a look of panic showing on Kori's normally stoic face.
Kori: 4000 LP - 3900 LP
"Now, my other three dragons attack directly! Spiral Storm Charge!" As the dragons jumped into action, a large cheer erupted from the crowd, and a smirk on Zarc's face. He'd won, and nothing could stop him. He'd even checked Kori's graveyard, and ironically, the traps he destroyed would have been better on the field. As the three dragons simultaneously hit the man, he was sent flying, but the safety protocols prevented him from getting seriously hurt.
Kori: 3900 LP - 0 LP
Zarc Wins!
"Zarc! Zarc! Zarc!" The crowd was chanting as the monsters disappeared, the Solid Vision system deactivating. Some officials entered the duel field, and led Zarc to a raised platform where, after a short speech he adlibbed, he was presented with the trophy, a massive grin on his face. When he was allowed to go, which was after a rather tiring press conference, he met with Ray and Leo, both of whom looked rather proud of him. Ray embraced him in a massive hug, which Zarc returned after being caught off guard for a second, and Leo gave him a hearty slap on the shoulder.
"Let's go celebrate," Leo said, "My treat for such a wonderful performance."
"You don't have to." Zarc stated, his voice a bit quiet,
"Nonsense! It's not every day your daughter's boyfriend becomes the Duel Monsters Champion, is it?"
An embarrassed blush crept onto both Zarc and Ray's face, Zarc from the praise that his girlfriend's father was heaping onto him. After some more protesting, Zarc caved, and they went and celebrated at a rather fancy restaurant, Zarc realising that he'd probably be expected to eat at places like this more often, now that he was a celebrity in the public eye, and suddenly a whole train of thought relating to what he was and wasn't expected to do now ran through his head.
"Ah, I know that look," Leo interrupted his thoughts, "Don't worry about what people 'expect' for you. Just do what you want. You're a celebrity now, who's going to stop you?"
"Oh, ah, yeah." Zarc said, caught off guard for a second time in a few hours. He hadn't actually thought much of doing what he wanted and had been planning to study what other celebrities did to emulate that success.
After a long night of food, drinks and laughter, they split for the night, Zarc remembering that he had another press conference in the morning, releasing a sigh as he collapsed on his bed.
Over the next five years, Zarc would get used to the routines of a celebrity who's every public appearance and move was tracked to an almost scary degree, only getting closer to Ray, the pair getting married when they were 20. Zarc had begun to work alongside his father-in-law to help develop the next evolution of dueling, Leo coming to him after discovering that all Real Solid Vision monsters were sentient to a degree. Zarc had eagerly agreed to help, the voices of his monster's spirits loudly proclaiming their agreement. Not long after Zarc's fourth anniversary of being Champion, they developed a whole new type of summoning: Link summoning and had made a whole new ruleset for those monsters. For the first half-year after its release, to facilitate more purchases, and also experimentation with strategies, they had a rule where other extra deck monsters could only be summoned to the Link monster's zone, or one they point to, as the mechanic used an 'arrow' system to allow further positioning, but after it proved unpopular, they changed it so that only Link monsters had to abide by that rule, causing Link monsters to become even more of a success.
After spending the day with Leo, celebrating the success of Link monster's first year on the market, and a day before Zarc's five-year Champion celebration, he entered the apartment he and Ray shared, to find his wife sitting at the kitchen table, an unidentifiable object in her hands. Setting down his briefcase that contained his work documents, he sat down opposite her.
"Hey honey, what's that?" He asked but was only rewarded with her placing the object on the table in front of him, a smile unlike any he'd seen before on her face. Upon being able to see the full object, Zarc suddenly realised what it was: A pregnancy test. "Wh-Why is a pregnancy test in front of me?" He asked, causing Ray to laugh,
"Look at the reading, silly!" and he did. He saw that it read 'positive', his eyes going wide,
"W-Wait, what?" he spluttered,
"Well, it looks like you're going to be able to add another credential to your record: Duel Champion, Husband, Researcher, Pioneer, and now, Father." Ray smiled, Zarc jumping up and embracing her, tears of joy running down his face,
"I can't believe it!" He said incredulously, "Does your father know?"
"Not yet. Like I'd tell my father before you on something like this." They shared a laugh, and Zarc ran a hand through his naturally silver hair,
"Okay, so, uhhh, what do we do? I know its likely early in the pregnancy, but shouldn't we start to prepare for their arrival?"
"Well, I'll be honest, I'm not sure either. Perhaps Dad will have some advice when we tell him."
"When should we?"
"There's a meeting for the Tournament next week, so shall we do so then? Dad will be free after it, so we should be able to tell him."
"What if we took him to lunch after?"
"That works." Ray smiled, embracing her husband again,
"Well, if you need anything, please let me know." Zarc said, also smiling, feeling Ray's nod in his shoulder where she was nestled.
The next week had been rather hectic. With the addition of discovering his wife was pregnant, his already monumental amount of stress due to the organisation of the first Championship with Link monsters increased exponentially. He had decided that he wouldn't be using a Link monster himself, and Ray had been disappointed that she couldn't compete, as Real Solid Vision safety rules mandated that it was highly unrecommended that pregnant women duel using it, but she understood why. Leo had been ecstatic upon finding out that he was to become a grandfather, and had started to rattle off things to prepare, but Ray had stopped him and asked him to write it down instead, which Leo happily did.
The Championship was six months later, and Zarc easily made it to the finals, and he was now standing on the field, his opponent looking on slightly nervously, as he stood facing down someone now known as the Supreme King following his domination of the dueling world, and his deck had become infamous ever since, ironically making the job harder for Zarc since it was common knowledge what his strategies.
"So, you're the one who is challenging me this year? Well, regardless of the result, I hope we're able to show the audience a great duel!" Zarc called out, his opponent standing up straighter,
"Yes. This duel will be great, as the Supreme King shall fall today! This I, the Nightmare Duelist, Zeke, shall bring this reign to a close!" His opponent called, rather enthusiastically having gained a lot of sudden energy, activating his duel disk, Zarc smiling and following suit.
"Let's duel!" They both called, starting another duel for the title.
Zarc: 4000 LP
Zeke: 4000 LP
Turn 1: Zeke
"I'll take the first turn if you don't mind, and with it, I'll activate the spell card Pot of Prosperity! At the cost of these six cards from my extra deck, I shall reveal that many cards from the top of my deck and add one of those to my hand!" Placing the cards in the banished zone, Zeke threw the top six cards up from the top of his deck revealing two copies of Pot of Extravagance, and one copy each of Floowandereeze & Eglen, Floowandereeze & Toccan, Floowandereeze & Robina and Floowandereeze & Stri. Adding Eglen to his hand, Zeke then returned the remaining cards to the bottom of his deck. "Now I shall activate my Floowandereeze and the Magnificent Map field spell, and using its effect, I banish Stri to summon Robina from my hand, its effect activating along with Stri's. Stri returns to my hand, then I get to add my Barrier Statue of the Stormwinds to my hand, then I can normal summon again, calling Eglen to my field, activating its effect to add Floowandereeze & Empen to my hand, then I am allowed to normal summon yet again! I tribute Robina and Eglen to tribute summon!
"On your wonderous journey you've headed all the way from north to south, meeting all sorts of wonderful avians. Behold the conclusion of the journey and your final encounter! I summon Floowandereeze & Empen to the field to bring a chill to our duel! Then I activate Empen's effect chaining Robina and Eglen, who, like Stri can return to my hand! Then, Empen allows me to add Floowandereeze and the Unexplored Winds and then I can normal summon my Barrier Statue by its effect. I shall conclude my turn by setting one card and activating Unexplored Winds." A smirk appeared on Zeke's face as Zarc had to take a step back at the rapid plays, a variety of birds appearing on Zeke's field, all different species yet united by a smaller bird that appeared to be journeying.
Floowandereeze & Empen: Level 10, 2700 ATK
Barrier Statue of the Stormwinds: Level 4, 1000 ATK
Turn 2: Zarc
"Well, that certainly is impressive. I can't say I was expecting a normal summoning archetype," Zarc announced, drawing his card, "Now, I can't special summon any of my monsters bar perhaps two, but they are locked in my extra deck, and I'm sure your deck plays off my normal summons, am I right?"
"Well, why would I tell you that, chum?" Zeke theatrically laughed,
"And that denial might as well be a confirmation! In that case, I normal summon Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm and activate its effect! This gets me Lightwurm, but what can I do with that?"
"Nothing! As you triggered the effect of my Magnificent Map! Since you normal summoned, I can do as such! I call Eglen back to the field and use its effect to search out the Mist Valley Apex Avian, and then I can normal summon again!"
"But you wouldn't want to get rid of the Statue. So what do you have planned?"
"Oh, you're about to see! Unexplored Winds allows me to use any card from any field as tributes! So I use your Darkwurm along with my Eglen to summon my Apex Avian!"
"WHAT!?" Was a common cry in the crowd as Zarc's Darkwurm disappeared in a flash of light, as well as Eglen again, a large orange and yellow bird taking their place.
Mist Valley Apex Avian: Level 7, 2800 ATK
"Shoot, that gets me in a bind, doesn't it? But I can stop that! I activate a spell from my hand, Supreme King's Ignorance! This can only be activated after a summon that takes place by anyone but the turn player, so, thank you! This allows me to negate one card's effects, summon one monster from my graveyard, or add one 'Supreme King' card to my hand from anywhere, and I choose to negate your Statue's effect! And that's not the best part! One monster you control is unable to activate its effects in response to this, for each 'Supreme King' monster with differing attributes I reveal, and I reveal Lightwurm and Supreme King Gate Zero, being your Apex Avian and your Empen. Furthermore, by paying half my life points, the negation on Empen extends for the whole turn!"
Zarc: 4000 LP - 2000 LP
"NO!"
"YES! Then I activate one of newest cards, Supreme King's Kin! This allows me to summon one 'Supreme King' monster from my GY and then summon its opposite counterpart from my hand or deck. So Darkwurm returns to me and then Lightwurm is called out! I now add my Darkseer and Supreme Finale to my hand, followed by Lightwurm and Darkwurm tuning together! Clear Wing, my friend, I call upon you! SYNCHRO SUMMON!" Zarc's Synchro ace appeared, roaring at the weight it could feel from Zeke's monsters' effects,
"Now, let's go! I activate the effect of Supreme King Dragon Lightmaster from my hand! By banishing Dark- and Lightwurms, I can summon it and call Darkmaster from my deck, in defence position. Its effect then activates allowing me to destroy that infernal statue so it won't affect me after this turn!" Zarc laughed as he pulled out monsters and cards that no one even knew he had.
Clear Wing Synchro Dragon: Level 7, 2500 ATK
Supreme King Dragon Lightmaster: Level 8, 2600 ATK
Supreme King Dragon Darkmaster: Level 8, 2600 DEF
"What even are these cards?! Anyway, I activate Apex Avian's effect! I return it to my hand to negate that effect and destroy Darkmaster!" Zeke snarled, most of the theatricality that had existed in his actions before disappearing,
"Actually, I chain Clear Wing's effect to negate that effect and destroy your Avian! Then, Clear Wing gains your monster's attack points! Reflection Mirror!" As the large bird attempted to fly back to Zeke's hand, Clear Wing roared and let out a blast of light that destroyed said bird instantly, its strength being absorbed.
Clear Wing Synchro Dragon: 2500 ATK - 5300 ATK
"Now, let's show you all one last surprise! I overlay Light- and Darkmaster to bring out a special dragon I've been saving for a case just like this one! I build the overlay network, and XYZ SUMMON! Come forth from the flames of chaos to bring order to this match! Rank 8, Supreme King Dragon Spectrummaster!" A dragon made of brilliant white and black scales, which often met in a peaceful grey emerged from the overlay network, roaring as its overlay units circled it, one yellow the other purple.
Supreme King Dragon Spectrummaster: Rank 8, 3600 ATK, 2 ORU
"I now use Spectrummaster's effect, detaching one overlay unit to summon a monster of that overlay unit's attribute from my deck! I summon my wonderous dichromatic mate, Odd-Eyes Dragon!" As the purple orb disappeared, melting into a soft grey, Odd-Eyes roared as it ran onto the field, Zarc strangely feeling something dark within his dragon that he had never noticed before, but it was so faint it was a miracle he even noticed it at all. He paid it no mind, however, choosing to focus on the duel.
Odd-Eyes Dragon: Level 7, 2500 ATK
SKD Spectrummaster: 2 ORU - 1 ORU
"Now, let's battle! I attack your Empen with Clear Wing! Spin Storm Sky Strike!" Clear Wing charged at the now helpless penguin, who was quickly slashed through, Zeke taking immense damage.
Zeke: 4000 LP - 1400 LP
"Now! Odd-Eyes! Finish this with Spiral Strike!" Zarc's other ace dragon charged at Zeke, headbutting the man so hard he slid fifteen feet backwards, barely catching himself, his life points dropping to zero.
Zeke: 1400 LP - 0 LP
Zarc Wins!
The crown went wild, Zarc moving up to his opponent and offering a hand up, which was accepted. Following this, Zarc faced the camera recording the post-match footage and took a deep bow, his dragons letting out a roar of joy each as they disappeared along with the Solid Vision system. After making one of his victory speeches, he headed out, barely avoiding more press, being met by Ray and Leo, Ray's pregnancy being rather obvious at this point. "Well done, honey!" She congratulated him, Zarc embracing his wife,
"Its all thanks to your support. You know that!" He said, Leo giving Zarc a hearty slap on the shoulder,
"You know that's not entirely true! Your skill saved you from many tight spots, you know. Least of all that last match!" He laughed,
"Daaaaaddd!" Ray groaned, slightly annoyed by her father's comment, no matter how true it might be,
"Well, in any case, I'm glad that you were both here to support me, and here's to another year of prosperity!" Zarc smiled, and the three exited the stadium, being caught by the press on the red carpet, so to speak, of Zarc's personal entry and exit. Pictures were captured, but the trio didn't particularly care in that moment, still riding the high of Zarc's most recent title defence.
(A/N: Please note! The following paragraph may contain some slightly more mature content (I'm really not sure), so reader discretion is recommended. There will be a quick summary in the chapter's A/N after it.)
Three months later, and Zarc was standing next to a hospital bed, trying his hardest to calm his wife, who was currently in labour, but to say that his attempts were fruitless would be generous, Ray seemingly not hearing a word he said, and a few very tense, sweaty hours later, Zarc and Ray were holding their babies. They had actually discovered there and then that they had been pregnant with twins, one male and one female, and the new parents couldn't be happier. Leo had known previously, the OBGN being required to tell someone, but the couple had asked not to find out the sex of their child, well, children, and had requested that they only be told verbally what was going on in Ray's womb, and as such didn't know until then, but they couldn't be happier.
"So, what are we going to name the kids?" Zarc playfully asked,
"I think we already know, don't we?" Ray replied, a very wide smile on her face,
"Yeah." Zarc also had a massive smile on his face, the one from when he first won a championship being the only one to rival this one,
"Ren and Izumi. Welcome to the world!" They both declared, the babies peacefully sleeping in their arms.
Summary for those who skipped this paragraph: Ray gave birth to twins, named Ren and Izumi. That's it.
Next Chapter Preview: Life goes on for Zarc and his family, but he finds something troubling with his monsters. What effects may this have on his career? Find out next week!

Hey all! Welcome to the end of the second chapter of the mini arc, where we see Zarc become champion, and a premonition of something further. Also, Ray and Zarc are parents now! I also apologise if anyone reading has had any actual experiences with pregnancies as I very likely got a lot wrong. So yeah. That's what being someone with literally no romantic experiences whatsoever gives you lol. Anyways, I hope you all enjoyed, and are looking forward to seeing how this goes. We also found out the in-universe reasons for the names of Ren and Izumi, but I can assure you that despite similarities, the Ren and Izumi in the present day aren't exactly Zarc and Ray's children. They are still fragments of the Demon Duelist and the Hope of Humanity (excuse my crude attempt at giving Ray a title like Zarc's lol). Anyways, on to reviews!
Reviewer – It was mostly personal choice, as Dark Rebellion is low-key my favourite of the Dimension Dragons, and, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that Zarc is ever stated as to preferring any of his dragons better than the others.
Aquatic Dragon – As far as I'm concerned, that dragon doesn't exactly exist in a physical form yet. Remember how Izumi claimed the card? That's how it first manifested physically. Why? Well, that's for a future chapter!
Unfortunately, there will not be a chapter next week, as I am going to have a few tests next week that I need to focus my attention to, so I will see you all in two weeks' time where we will have the penultimate chapter of this mini-arc! Finally, I hope you all enjoyed my expansions to the 'Supreme King' archetype, as given the cards that actually exist for it, I wouldn't be able to do much really. Also, I am really sorry to my fellow Floo players, as I did need Zarc to win, and I know that the way he did so was rather plot armour-y. See you all next time – NightWingBOI
