The doctor frowned as he examined Kate Banks.
"I'm afraid she needs a blood transfusion," he explained.
"That's… we can test… I'll get tested and…"
Michael's voice trailed off as he swallowed his tears.
"She has a rare blood type," the doctor replied, "It's AB-"
"Father is AB-," Jane said.
"Is he?" the doctor asked.
"He is," Jane and Michael replied.
A few hours later Michael rang the doorbell to his parents' house.
"Michael," George began with a smile.
He hugged his son.
"Hi Dad," Michael said, "Can we talk?"
"Of course," George replied, "Come. Let's go into the study."
They went into the study.
"Now," George asked, "What is on your mind son?"
Michael sat down. So did George.
"Kate needs a blood transfusion," Michael explained, "She has AB- blood."
Soon they're up and grown
And on their own
And it becomes too late for you to give…
"I also have AB- blood," George said.
"Father, I know you're afraid of needles… but I'm terrified of losing Kate. Anabelle is only 18 months and John is just 3 weeks."
"Of course," George said, "I'll gladly donate my blood to her."
He rose from his seat.
"Winifred," he said, "I'm going to the hospital to donate my blood to Kate. I'll be back as soon as I can."
"Do you need me to come with you," Winifred asked.
"That would be nice– thank you," George replied softly.
George and Winifred were taken into one room at the hospital while Michael and Jane waited outside with Anabelle and John.
"Daddy," Annabelle asked, "Could I hold John?"
"Yes," Michael said, "When we get home."
"Is mummy going to be alright," Anabelle asked.
"She's going to be fine," Jane reassured her niece, "She should be home soon."
"Aunt Jane can you take me to the toy room," Anabelle asked.
"It's called a playroom love," Jane said, "Michael is it alright with you?"
"Certainly," Michael replied.
George was white as a sheet as he saw the needle.
"George dear," Winifred said, "I'm so proud of you. I know how scared you are of this and yet you are doing it for Kate."
"And Michael," he replied wincing as the needle pierced his skin, "And for Annabelle and John."
"You are a good man, George," Winifred said putting her hand on top of his.
"Thank you, my love," George replied.
