Goblin Slayer - Preemptive Strike
Darkness closed in around them, only to be replaced with a flaming light, a ball of fire serving as the only source of luminance within the dark dusty tomb. Goblin Slayer led the way, shield out and sword drawn as he began down the stairs, ears straining to pick up anything and everything.
There were goblins down here, how many and what they were equipped with, he had no idea.
But that had never stopped him before, and it wasn't going to stop him now.
Eventually they reached the bottom of the stairs, coming into contact with another door. It too, was shut.
He sniffed, the stench of goblins growing stronger the closer they got.
Instead of opening the door, he kicked it free from its hinges. The old wooden door flew from its frame, and just so happened to crash right into a certain green skinned monster.
He prowled into the second room, eyes practically glowing in the darkness as he neared the struggling goblin.
His sword gleamed, before he thrust it forward, bathing it in that disgusting red.
"That's one." He growled, stomping on its head as he passed, just for good measure.
Serena's ears twitched, picking up something in the darkness ahead. "Master!" She hissed, warning him.
Suddenly an arrow flew from the murky blackness, flying right for him.
He didn't even blink, slashing it out of the air. He set his eyes forward, locking onto his next target. "There you are." He muttered, leaning forward as he charged the creature down.
It stumbled backwards in surprise, ready to flee before it could be taken down.
Unfortunately for it, it would learn the hard way that Goblin Slayer had no mercy to spare, as a particular shot sword suddenly flashed forward, impaling it through the skull.
Goblin Slayer stepped forward into the darkness, yanking his small sword free. "That's two." He said to himself.
Standing up, he glanced around the open tomb he found himself in.
No goblins were about, not a one save for the two he just killed.
There was not a chance that there was only two hiding down here. He knew without a shadow of a doubt there were tens more, if not close to a hundred down in these catacombs.
But they were smart, hiding away from their predator, waiting for him to turn his back and leave.
Then they would strike.
That's how it always went down, and he had a feeling that this time would be no different.
"Where are they? This is the end of the catacombs…" Serena muttered quietly, casting her fireball around to see if she had somehow missed something important.
"They're goblins, hiding in places like these is one of their greatest skills. But there's something wrong here…" Goblin Slayer muttered, glancing around.
Nothing but skeletons and mummies lines the walls of the catacombs, from entrance to the deepest pits. Not only that, there was absolutely no sign of the missing women.
If they had been dragged down here, they wouldn't just vanish.
"There's a secret door somewhere, leading to a cave." He stated factually, so confident that it was the truth that she believed him without hesitation.
"That means that those two were merely the guards…" The busty vampire realized, eyes widening. "Of course, that makes perfect sense. We just have to find that door then." She muttered.
"Make your fireball bigger." Goblin Slayer ordered, casting a glance to her.
She nodded firmly, holding her staff higher into the air as she pushed more of her magic into her staff. The fireball suddenly tripled in size, glowing so bright that not a single corner of the catacombs were left unlit.
Without the strange murky darkness mucking up his vision, he was able to properly make out what it was he was seeing. "I see blood. There is a trail that leads to this wall." He muttered, following the previously unseen red life essence to a particularly blank looking wall.
Unlike the rest of the stone walls that lined the catacombs, this section of wall looked like it had been hastily thrown together, small gaps left in its build.
He could smell goblins through those gaps.
His eyes began to glow. "Found you…" He uttered so lowly Serena thought he was purring at the thought of finally getting the chance to go wild.
"How do you want to take this wall down? I don't know how much time we have before those missing women are-" She tried to ask, but he already had a plan.
And, fortunately, it didn't involve explosives. She was sure the priests wouldn't like knowing that he burned the corpses of their long dead warriors.
"Fus!" He uttered in the dragon tongue, his power blasting forth with enough energy to rend the stones from the wall. The bricks were thrown from their original place, crashing into the cave beyond.
Three more goblins stood behind the wall, stepping backwards in fear of the power on display.
Playtime was over.
He rushed forward, drawing his short sword as he cut the first goblin in half. He parried the weapon from the second goblin, kicking it into the third before stabbing both through the chest.
He stood up, flicking his blade clean of their blood.
That's when he heard it, screaming.
Women screaming.
"We're running out of time. If they know we're coming, they may kill off their captives." He muttered lowly, kicking up into a run. "Keep your senses open. Goblins like to trap their invaders. We don't want to walk into a trap." He explained, running down into the depths of the caves.
"Yes Master!" Serena exclaimed, gripping her staff just a bit tighter. She wouldn't dare underestimate these goblins, she'd heard enough horror stories from the man to know what fate awaited her if she did.
They delved deeper into the tunnels, not stopping as arrows flew their way. he blocked them with his shield, yet a few managed to slip by. He grunted as one stabbed into his side, missing his metal plates as it hit his chainmail underneath.
Another struck his leg, actually managing to damage him.
Yet he didn't even blink, not even slowing down as she charged right after the archer's hidden in the back. More arrows came his way, but he cut them out of the air.
The goblins hissed their ugly language at him, taking up arms as they tried to fight back.
They were all mercilessly and ruthlessly cut down in seconds.
He stood tall over his kills, staring down at them with a wave of disgust. "That's… seven." He muttered, yanking the shoddy arrow from his leg. Blood leaked from the wound, but it wasn't nearly enough to stop him.
Not even for a moment.
"Goblin Slayer! Are you alright?" Serena worried, bending down by his legs.
"It's just an arrow." He muttered, reaching into his back pouch. He pulled out a small red potion, flicking the cork off with his thumb. He reached up, moving the small chin plate of his helmet so he could drink. The effects were immediate, his pain relieved as the would healed.
They finally reached the depths of the cave, the missing women chained to the walls.
They wore nothing, yet they seemed to have only recently been locked up. Their wounds weren't grievous either.
They were lucky.
"Serena, cut them down. We've got to get them out of here." He muttered, glancing around the room.
Something wasn't right here.
There hadn't been any traps, and there had been barely seven goblins so far…
Seven.
That wasn't right.
Not at all.
"On it!" The voluptuous vampire exclaimed, rushing to aid the women. "Don't worry, we're here to help." She spoke gently, reaching up to grasp their rusty chains. She didn't have a weapon strong enough to break them, but she didn't need one.
Her fangs gleamed in the darkness, flashing forward as she tore through the old metal chains like s hot knife through butter.
The women fell to the ground, freed from their shackles. Yet they didn't seem any more comfortable, instead shaking in fear, staring up into her golden-red vampiric eyes.
Seemingly sensing their fear, she bent down to their level, gently placing her hands on their bare shoulders. "It's okay, I'm not going to hurt you. Really, I'm here to help." She softly said, voice radiating a calm soothing aura.
They seemed scared wordless, they, they took to her older sister-like tone. The vampire suddenly found herself wrapped up in a desperate hug by the two young girls, their tears staining her cloak as they cried their hearts out.
Her eyes widened for a moment, before a soft smile melted over her face as she wrapped her arms around them, pulling them in to her large warm breasts. "It's okay, I'm right here. Everything's going to be fine now, everyone's going to go home." She cooed softly, rubbing calming circles on their backs.
One girl was older, perhaps a wiser woman working at the temple. Yet, the other girl couldn't have been older then sixteen. She had long blond hair that reached her legs, and sapphire blue eyes. She was undoubtedly very pretty, and it was no wonder the vile goblins had taken her away.
She was just thankful that they'd managed to make it in time, before anything unspeakable happened.
"Something's not right." Goblin Slayer muttered from somewhere behind her. "It doesn't make sense." He looked around, eyes narrowed.
Still holding onto the crying women, Serena glanced backwards to look at him. "What is it…?" She asked quietly, still on edge.
They weren't truly safe until they were on the surface again.
"The goblins didn't get in here from the catacombs. They were already in these caves. That means there's another entrance…" He muttered, walking away.
"Where are you going…? Master?" The vampire asked, watching him leave.
"Goblin slaying. Stay here, I'll return shortly." He ordered, tossing her his short sword. "Use this if you run out of magic." He said.
She nodded firmly, catching it out of the air. "Yes sir." She exclaimed sharply.
He drew his steal long-sword, eyes narrowed as he moved deeper in.
Going back the way they came revealed something new to him.
Another tunnel.
And this tunnel lead all the way outside the city. It was obvious that this was how they'd managed to sneak into the catacombs.
Soon the others would come running in to investigate why their scouts hadn't returned, and that's when he would spring his trap.
On that note, he could already hear them coming his way.
Ten minutes passed before he returned to her, covered in copious amounts of goblin blood. She could practically sense the satisfaction radiating off of his body, telling her that the job was done.
The man moved back over to her and the girls, taking a knee beside them. They watched him curiously, knowing that it was because of him and his efforts that they were safe from harm.
He looked at the older woman, noticing that she had seemingly passed our. Yet the younger girl was still wide awake, staring at him like a kitten who was moments away from scattering.
He was stumped for a moment, wondering how he could go about reassuring her that he was safe. Then he recalled something he did often with Serena, and decided to try that here.
Reaching his gloved hand out to her, he gently placed it on top of her head, patting her lightly. "Are you okay?" He asked lowly, voice as monotone and gravelly as ever.
"U-Um y-y-yes sir…" She sniffed, shaking underneath his grasp. "T-The goblins…" She whispered, voice cracking.
His eyes seemed to glow red. "Dead. I killed them." He muttered lowly.
Her eyes widened, as if a massive weight had been lifted off of her shoulders. She suddenly threw herself at him, pulling her body snug against his in a desperate hug. She didn't care how her naked body felt against his armor, nor how uncomfortable it was.
For her, she was just overjoyed that those monsters were dead.
"Thank you…" She cried, her tears staining his fur collar. "Thank you thank you thank you…" She chanted on like a mantra, her cried echoing throughout the cave.
He didn't move for a moment, arms laying useless at his side.
But then he moved, slowly wrapping her up in a hug. "You're… welcome." He muttered, holding her close to his body as she cried. "What's your name?" He asked softly, still running his gloved fingers through her long blond locks to help sooth her.
She sniffed, tears slowing to a halt as she glanced up at him. "I-I don't have one… The o-other girls at the temple… just call me… Priestess…" She muttered quietly, eyes growing heavier the longer she held onto him.
Eventually she seemed to fall asleep, the events of the day finally catching up with her. He effortlessly lifted her up, carefully and thoughtfully holding her naked body in his arms. He didn't come prepared with any extra cloaks for her, yet it seemed like he didn't need to worry.
Serena took off her red cloak, laying it over the girl. Goblin Slayer blinked in surprise, looking over to her.
She smiled up at him, her beautiful golden-red eyes shining up at him with adoration. "I do not wish for her to return in such a state. Even if that means exposing myself and bearing the sunlight, I'll do it for her." She explained softly, running her fingers over the sleeping girl's cheeks. "I knew that goblins were monsters from what you told me, but… Seeing it now, seeing what they are capable of, what they were about to do to these girls. It really helps make things clear to me." She explained, fondly running her fingers over the young blond.
The girl had been lucky, unbelievably lucky.
It had been far too close, and any later…?
"These goblins need to die. Every goblin in the world, every single one. I want them to burn…" She muttered, a flaming anger in her eyes. But that fire softened when she glanced to the innocent girl in her Master's arms. "But, that can wait. Let's get them out of here…" She muttered, moving to pick up the other girl.
Goblin Slayer didn't say anything, yet she knew he was deep in thought. "Yeah…" He muttered, already turning to leave. There was no point in staying here any longer.
Upon making their way out, however, he stopped by the hole in the wall that lead to the catacombs. He took a bottle of highly flammable oil from his pouch, tossing it into the depths of the cave. The glass shattered, sending the oil everywhere.
"Serena, burn everything." He ordered lowly. "We leave no trace, no survivors."
She raised her staff with one hand, summoning a giant fireball. "Yes Master…" She uttered, blasting it into the depths.
They would make sure that no goblin would dare to try and reuse these caves again.
And, on the off chance that any returned? They would go back and kill them too.
