Jed laughed softly, then let himself drift into sleep, and when he woke, Rebecca was already dressed, and sat on the chair by the desk writing. She looked at him as she heard him stir, her expression the familiar poised one she often wore, though it contained the equally familiar heat that she often threw his way. She smiled and said. "As I agreed, once I was...satisfied , I've got down to business, because we can't have Heyes thinking we're incapable of restraint now can we?"
Jed sat up, and swung his legs over the edge of the bed as she handed him the paper she'd been writing on and said. "Just a list of names for whom Mr Burrell is the lawyer, and another list of people who most likely know exactly what he is doing, including more than one senior police officer. I'm not sure what else I can do to help."
Jed looked down at the neatly written sheet, smelling faintly of Rebecca's perfume and replied. "Gives us a place to start." He then added firmly. " I really think you oughta get yourself a bodyguard."
She gave him an intense gaze, her eyes drinking him in. "You offering?"
Jed not wanting to get distracted pulled the quilt over his lower half and replied firmly. "I gotta watch Heyes' back, and whatever his plan, it'll need both of us to work. So as tempting as it is to agree, I'm gonna have to say no."
"Then I'm afraid Jed, I must decline also. I'm not happy anyone knowing " She paused meaningfully before adding.. "the most intimate moments of my life."
Jed sighed and said irritated. "You're a stubborn woman, Rebecca. How can we keep ya safe if you ain't gonna meet us halfway?"
She stood and walked over to him, resting her right hand gently on his bare shoulders "I promise Jed, I will keep myself safe in a way that I can fit into my life. And soon, it won't matter, as I have every faith that you and Heyes will find a way of resolving this situation." She paused, then added with a slightly grim smile. " I do hope your partner's plan won't involve you getting arrested this time, because if it does. I will not be happy, and he will have cause to regret my unhappiness."
The Kid sighed, the animosity that seemed to constantly simmer between Heyes and Rebecca whenever they met, was tiresome, and left him weary. He did not appreciate being in the middle of that sort of relationship. "He didn't force me into being arrested...it was the only way, and you have to let it go. I'm more than capable of saying no to him."
She moved away and said frustration clear in her tone. "But lets face it, Jed, you rarely do. so."
He stood, pointedly turning away from her, and angrily began to gather his clothes, frustrated that she was making no attempt to respect his long partnership with Heyes. Once he had his pants on he turned back to her. "Maybe its best that we keep our relationship purely business related from now on, Ma'am."
Her face colored at his words, her brows drawn down, though her lips twitched a little as if fighting a smile. "No,Jed, I don't think so. I will endeavor to be less vocal about my disapproval of Heyes', as long as he promises to be more polite with me."
Jed didn't reply, unsure of both her sincerity and Heyes' ability to cooperate. And his dressing was completed in an awkward silence. Until with one hand on the handle to the door as he unlocked it, he turned back to her. "Heyes agreed to help you, we are being well paid, I do admit to that, but he would have come here with me anyway."
Rebecca sighed then, realising there was a lot she didn't understand about Jed, or Heyes and that in the time they had left together, it was unlikely she would get it, so the only thing she could do was tread easy, or she'd alienate Jed, in a way she didn't wish to. She let out a deep breath, accepting the reality, and said calmly. "These next weeks will likely be our last opportunity to be together, and I would not like us to part on less than...friendly terms. I promise to keep it civil with Heyes, I do. In my marriage to William I became well practised in not expressing my true feelings on many matters, and I can do so again if it means peace between us."
Jed felt his anger at her deflate some, and he let his hand drop from the handle as she walked over to him, to lay her hands on his hips, and he sighed as she kissed him, her arms slipping round him as he murmured. "Peace?" He sighed and relaxed into her embrace, then allowed her to lead him back to bed, locking the door behind them.

As the evening stretched into late night, Heyes paced the hotel room, cursing his absent partner, and wondering just what time it'd be when he finally rolled in, if he even would tonight at all. When he did return, Heyes just knew it'd be with a complete lack of any useful information, but definitely wearing an expression of tired satisfaction.
He had given up on the Kid getting back till sometime after dawn, and had turned in, when the door finally opened and he turned up. Heyes lit the lamp by his bed, and turned a fierce glare on his friend, about to snap at him, but when he sighed, and shrugged apologetically, his expression a little clouded, he thought better of it and instead asked. "Something up?"
"Ain't nothin' Heyes, I told ya not to wait up."
His anger piqued at the dismissive tone, Heyes sat on the edge of the bed. "Well, that's a fine way to talk, Kid!"
"Heyes, not tonight, please." The Kid sounded weary and more than a little irritated.
Never one to back down Heyes looked at him, snorted and said flippantly. "She tire ya out eh?"
The Kid glared then huffed before saying. "All right, Heyes, we kinda had an argument, and I sure ain't in the mood for a second one with you, I just wanna go to bed."
Heyes snorted, taking in his partner's dishevelled look, the smeared lipstick on his cheek, the redness of his chin, plus his slightly swollen lips, and finally the unevenly buttoned shirt and said dryly. "But I'm figuring you kissed and made up."
The Kid shot him a look, before his face broke into a smile as he began to undress. "A gentleman don't tell, Heyes."
"Maybe not, but badly buttoned shirts and lipstick smears sure do." Then as the Kid lay down on his bed, but before he could reply, Heyes blew out the lamp as he said. "Goodnight, Kid."
There was a pointed pause before the Kid answered. "One of these days, I swear..." Before adding quieter. "Good night, Heyes."
