Sorry this took a minute, the holidays were hectic! I am still surprised that so many people are interested in this idea, but I'm thankful all the same.
This ended up being longer than expected, but that happens sometimes.
Anyways, On to the Chapter!
"What do you think All MIght's big announcement is gonna be Tsuyu?" Mina asked excitedly. "I bet he's gonna give us all new super awesome support gear because we're so amazing!"
Tsuyu gave the pink girl in front of her a blank stare.
"I highly doubt that's the case, kero," Tsuyu replied. "But I will admit that I am curious too."
The day before, Aizawa had announced to the class that All Might would have something to tell them during their next heroics class. Tsuyu, like the rest of her class, had speculated about what it could be. She'd eventually decided to just wait and see what it was.
"Do you have any ideas then?" Mina said before pointing to the other side of the classroom. "You don't have to be like green bean over there, just give me something!"
"I'd rather just wait and see, kero."
"That's so boring!" Mina exclaimed before getting up. "I'll just have to find someone who does have cool theories."
Tsuyu watched as Mina walked over to her friend Tooru. As she did, Tsuyu noticed her eyes drift to the green mop that made up Midoriya's hair.
'I guess we're doing this again,' Tsuyu thought to herself.
Every since Midoriya had tried to save her during the USJ attack. Tsuyu had noticed that her thoughts drifted to the boy often.
Sure he didn't save her, but he was ready to put his life on the line to do so. Plus his determination during the whole attack was admirable and was enough for her to have at least a passing interest in him. She wanted to try and get to know him better, but based on how he interacted with Uraraka, Tsuyu knew it wouldn't be a simple task.
Tsuyu looked away from Midoriya and at the clock on the wall. Class was about to start meaning their teacher would share his announcement in just a few moments.
Tsuyu had mixed feelings about All Might as a teacher. His first class had been memorable, but the fact students had been injured during it spoiled it for Tsuyu. Additionally, the whole ordeal could've been avoided if All Might hadn't been late to the rescue mission field trip.
Tsuyu looked to the door where All Might would burst in at any moment.
Despite his failings as a teacher, Tsuyu found herself enjoying the opportunity to learn more about the number one hero.
He was far more awkward and unsure than he presented in interviews. It made him feel less like an untouchable god and more like a normal person.
Another thing Tsuyu learned was that All Might was loud.
"I AM ENTERING THE CLASSROOM WITH A SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT TO SHARE!"
Even louder than he was on TV.
"Good morning class!" All Might said when he got to his podium. "I'm sure you are all anxiously waiting to hear my announcement, but worry not because in a few short moments THE WAIT WILL BE OVER!"
Tsuyu would always find the way some people could talk so much yet say so little impressive.
"All Might," A metallic voice called from outside the classroom. "Stop stalling."
Tsuyu felt herself pause.
The voice was familiar. Very familiar.
"O-of course," All MIght said in a slightly shaky voice. "Due to the recent incident, the school has deemed it necessary to provide me with a teaching assistant so that you may be better prepared," All Might pointed to the door with dramatic flair. "Please welcome your new TEACHER!"
A tall man in a metal suit walked over to the podium from the door, taking his place next to All Might.
"Hello class, I am your new teacher. Please don't bother with honorifics with me and just call me Wavebreak."
Tsuyu froze as she began to internally freak out.
How could she not? The hero standing at the front of the room was one she'd idolized for almost her entire life.
She'd watched every media appearance dozens of times over. She'd been a part of every charity event she was able to attend. She'd spent large amounts of money on any piece of Wavebreak memorabilia she could find.
And here he was. Standing at the front of the classroom saying he'd be their teacher.
She couldn't think of anything to say, and it seemed her classmates were having the same problem.
"Okay," Wavebreak said after a moment. "I wasn't expecting applause, but silence wasn't what I was expecting either."
With those words, the spell over the classroom broke.
"OH MY GOSH IT'S WAVEBREAK!"
"We have both the number one and number two heroes as our teachers!"
"He looks so much cooler in person!"
Tsuyu was about to voice her excitement like her classmates but decided against adding to the cacophony.
Wavebreak brought a finger to his face in a shushing motion and immediately the class went silent.
"While hearing what you guys have to say is beyond flattering, we have a lot to get to," Wavebreak said with an audible smile before his tone became serious. "All Might will teach you how to use your quirks in combat, but I will break you so that when the time comes you will not shatter," The excitement that had previously been in the room had disappeared "You have all faced real villains. You've seen your classmates get injured and almost die. When you are in this classroom, you are not children. You are heroes in training."
Wavebreak put his hands on the podium, his fingers tapping wrapping around the corners.
"I'm not saying this to scare you," He said, his voice suddenly softer. "You are still kids, and outside this class I want you to act like kids, but I also want you to be ready. The world of heroes is often glamorized to the point people forget how brutal it is."
He looked out at the classroom, but for some strange reason, Tsuyu felt as if his eyes locked on her.
"There is a reason therapists need a special license to see hero patients, and why the acceptance rate for hero schools is so low. It takes a certain kind of grit and determination to become a hero."
Wavebreak pushed himself up from the podium and stood at his full height before lifting his arm and pointing at the students.
"None of you dropped out after the attack on the USJ, showing me you lot just might have the stuff to be heroes. I hope your actions don't tell me otherwise."
Tsuyu felt something in the air, a silent agreement amongst all the students to give it their all.
"Now with that all of the way, everyone head to Field Beta and change out. Me and All MIght will meet you there."
Around Tsuyu, her classmates started getting and heading to the door, talking about their newest teacher while doing so. Tsuyu hung back a little, wanting a chance to talk to her idol before the physical part of class began. She had a feeling it was going to be grueling.
As she walked to the front of the classroom, Tsuyu noticed someone had beaten her to the punch. Midoriya stood there talking to Wavebreak in a hushed voice, far from the fanboy freakout Tsuyu expected from him.
Tsuyu waited for the pair to stop talking. Sure she was curious about what was being said, but she also knew if they wanted what they were talking about to be known, they'd share it with the class.
Eventually, their conversation ended and Midoriya walked off, giving Tsuyu her chance.
"Tsuyu Asui right?" The hero asked as she approached.
"Yes," Tsuyu replied quickly, trying not to let her nerves get to her.
"Good, I was hoping to talk to you," Wavebreak said happily. "You got me bingo."
"What?" Tsuyu asked, tilting her head in confusion.
The hero stuck his hand in the side of his suit for a moment before pulling out a slightly crumpled piece of paper. He held up, showing Tsuyu the grid with water-related hero's signatures filling most of the boxes.
"Could you sign here?" Wavebreak asked as he tapped a box labeled 'amphibian quirk' with a pen before offering it to Tsuyu.
Taking the writing utensil, Tsuyu signed the box quickly, too stunned to say anything.
Her idol wanted her signature. Even though it was only because she had a water-related quirk, she still felt special.
"Thank you!" The hero said as he grabbed the paper and moved to put it back in his suit.
But, before he got too far, he stopped and looked at Tsuyu.
"Say Asui," Wavebreak said, his tone slightly mischievous. "Do you mind holding on to this for a few decades? I'm pretty forgetful sometimes and would hate to lose it."
Tsuyu's eyes widened in shock.
That piece of paper had the signatures of at least fifteen popular heroes, two of which were in the top ten.
"I'll put my name on it too so it doesn't get lost," He said as he scribbled on the paper. "Here you go!"
Tsuyu stared at the offered piece of paper for a moment before grabbing it with a shaky hand.
"Why don't you catch up with the rest of your classmates. Swing by my office sometime though, I'd love to talk to you about your quirk."
Tsuyu nodded numbly and walked toward the door, paper clutched firmly in her hands.
She was going to frame it as soon as she got home.
All Might watched as another student walked back to his side of the field with a mix of awe and concern.
For the training, Percy had elected to work with the students one at a time while he guided the rest through a simple combat drill. All Might knew his master never did anything halfway but as every student came back looking beyond exhausted, he was getting worried. At some point, he had to stop running the drill altogether because none of the students had the energy to keep going.
"Good job today!" All Might said to the thoroughly tired class. "You gave it your all and truly showed what it means to go Plus Ultra!"
The students murmured tiredly in response, causing the Number One hero to wince.
"Hit the showers and change out, we're done for the day!"
All Might watched the kids stumble off the field, a frown coming onto his face as he saw some of them almost trip.
"They did pretty well today," Percy's voice said from beside him. "A solid seven out of ten."
All MIght turned to his fellow teacher and shook his head.
"I know you said you were going to break them, but did you have to do it on the first day? They looked half dead!"
Percy simply shrugged and looked toward the still-struggling students.
"It won't be like this every time, I needed to see what their limits were so I know what to work on with them."
"What are your thoughts on them so far?"
Percy crossed his arms over his chest and looked to the sky.
"They're pretty good for the most part," He said after a moment. "A few of them are criminally underutilizing their quirks and the few that know their quirks well aren't trying too hard to experiment," Percy sighed and brought his hands to his hips. "There are two that stood out to me though."
"Young Midoriya and Bakugou?" All Might asked, though he already knew the answer.
Percy nodded.
"Bakugou has a surprisingly solid grasp of the ins and outs of his quirk," Percy's shoulders dropped and All Might could tell he was scowling. "But his ego is going to get him killed someday."
"What do you mean?"
All Might knew Bakugou had an ego, he'd seen it himself, but he wouldn't go as far as to say it would kill him.
"Anybody that has a decent water quirk or can outrange him could take him down without much difficulty. Quirks like that aren't common, but they exist," Percy said. "He thinks he's the best which leaves him open to being caught off guard or tricked. You've already seen that with how Midoriya handled him in their first class."
"How do you suggest we fix it?"
"I dunno," Percy replied with a shrug. "We could just beat him till he doesn't get up, then try and talk some sense into him."
All Might shuddered as memories of his 'training' with Gran Torino flashed across his mind.
"But I get the feeling the school wouldn't like that."
All Might shook his head.
"If what I've heard is true, I doubt Nezu would have a problem with that method."
"Either way, we gotta think of something," Percy sighed. "And I'm too tired to do it now."
All Might could sense his master's desire to leave, but he needed to know about his successor.
"What about Young Midoriya?"
Percy groaned and kicked the ground.
"His control over his quirk is abysmal and he has next to no confidence. I help fix the quirk problem, but confidence is something he needs to build for himself." Percy checked his wrist as if he were checking a watch. "As much as I enjoy discussing the best ways to fight kids, I got patrol in an hour and I'm hungry as Hades."
"Understood, we can meet again before the next class."
Percy nodded and started walking back toward the school. But before he got too far he turned back and yelled.
"By the way good job with class today. You didn't even need a script this time!"
All MIght felt his face flush with embarrassment.
Of course, his master found out about that.
"Maybe next time you won't need the 'Teaching for Dummies' book you got hidden in your pocket either."
All Might wanted to die right there.
"Again!"
Izuku drove his fist into the pad Percy was holding for what felt like the one-thousandth time.
When the Number Two hero told him he would be helping him train All MIght's quirk, Izuku had been expecting advanced drills and lessons on how to handle the power best.
He had not been expecting to punch a pad for hours.
"Your form was terrible on that one," Percy said tiredly. "Let's take a quick break and I'll show you how to throw a proper punch. Again."
Izuku put his hands on his knees and took several deep breaths.
Percy had pulled aside after his introduction in the morning and told him to come to a gym he owned after school. Izuku spent the whole day mentally preparing himself to be trained by the Number Two hero in a one-on-one setting but had been left disappointed, especially after his heroics class gave him a taste of what it would be like.
"Catch," Izuku heard Percy say as the man threw a water bottle at him. "Drink up. Dehydration is a horrible way to go out."
Izuku took the bottle and greedily drank it.
"Thank you."
Percy nodded and took a sip from his bottle.
"Of course. Water is kinda my thing."
Izuku chuckled weakly.
He appreciated the fact Percy was training him, he just wished it was relevant.
"Wavebreak-" Izuku started before being cut off.
"Percy."
"P-Percy,' The boy amended, still slightly uncomfortable using the man's first name. "Why are we spending so much time on punching? I thought you were going to help me use One For All better."
Percy put his bottle down and looked at Izuku, a small smile on his lips.
"For starters, you can't punch for shit. Knowing how to punch properly will help you fight better without your quirk."
Izuku frowned.
"Why would I want to fight without my quirk?"
"Kid, you have the power to end fights immediately, but also cause devastating damage," Percy replied seriously. "Until you learn how to manage the output of your quirk, you're gonna fight without it."
"You said you would help me work on control!" Izuku exclaimed suddenly. "Not using it doesn't help me control it!"
"You don't ask someone who just learned how to ride a bike to compete professionally," Percy said as he pinched the bridge of his nose. "You don't know how to fight or how to channel your quirk correctly. By starting with fighting, you'll have something to work with until you can use your quirk properly."
Izuku looked at the ground. He was making good points. Every time he'd used All For One before, he'd done so without any finesse or real skill. It worked but left his arm in-
"What do you mean I'm not channeling it correctly?" Izuku asked suddenly, his head snapping toward his teacher.
Percy stared at him for a moment before throwing his head back and cursing,
"Damnit! I had this whole thing planned with proper punching form and you figuring it out!"
"What are you talking about?"
"What have I told you about throwing a punch?"
Izuku thought for a minute before responding.
"I need to step into the punch, rotate my hips, have proper foot placement," Izuku listed off. "You also said that it's not just using my arm, but using my whole bo-"
Izuku stopped as his eyes widened dramatically.
Was it that easy? Had the answer been right in his face the entire time?
Izuku looked down at his hand intensely.
He'd been practicing controlling his output since he managed to hit the Nomu without injury. He'd been able to get it down to what he estimated as five percent but had a hard time maintaining it.
Taking a deep breath, Izuku called upon a small portion of his quirk, but instead of focusing on a single point like he usually did, he focused on spreading it across his entire body.
It felt, different to say the least.
While before it felt like an active bomb strapped to his arm, spreading it across his body felt like he was enveloped in a heavy blanket. It was also notably harder to maintain, and after a moment he let go of his control.
Taking a moment to catch his breath, Izuku looked up to his teacher and was met with a shit-eating grin.
"There ya go!" Percy exclaimed happily. "How did it feel?"
"Odd," Izuku replied after a moment. "It was harder to control but I also felt, I don't know, sturdier? Like I could do more."
Percy nodded.
"That's how it should be. I'm glad you figured it out so fast, even if you had to ruin my brilliant plan to do so."
Izuku rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment. He started to apologize before being cut off by a soft punch on his shoulder.
"Were you seriously about to apologize for being smart?"
"Sor-" Izuku shut his mouth before he could finish.
"You're learning."
Izuku blushed slightly.
"Now that we have the problem out of the way, we can move on to the next one," Percy said before bringing his hand to his chin and looking to the side. "Well, it's not really solving a current problem, more like preventing one from forming at all,"
"What?"
Izuku was getting tired of asking that, but he also knew he was about to learn something useful. His original grievances about the training had melted away and had been replaced with a determination to learn as much from Percy as possible.
"You gotta learn how to use your legs," Percy replied as he glanced at the ceiling briefly. "I already see a habit forming of you relying on your arms which could get you hurt down the road."
"What's wrong with using my arms?"
"For one, your legs are much stronger than your arms. And two, if you only punch, you become predictable." Percy looked toward the ceiling and put his hands on his hips, a frown forming on his face. "Unfortunately I can't really teach you how to kick properly. But-"
Izuku was startled by a loud noise coming from the ceiling of the gym and he had barely any time to react before something crashed into the ground a few feet away from him.
"She can."
Izuku watched as a person stood up from the newly formed crater in the ground. She was fairly short with dark skin and red eyes that popped against her long white hair. She wore dark purple combat boots and a white leotard with blue wave patterns along the edges. She had a large scar starting just below her left eye and stopping somewhere beneath her leotard. Her most striking features though, were long bunny ears and prosthetic left arm.
Izuku swallowed dryly. He recognized her of course, anybody who knew anything about the top ten would.
"M-m-mirko," He sputtered, his body starting to shake against his will. "W-what are you doing here?"
The Rabbit Hero cocked her head to the side before turning around and addressing Percy.
"Kid's not too bright is he oto-san?"
"Go easy on the kid, don't call me that," Percy said while massaging his forehead. "And did you have to come through the ceiling again? You know very well it's not cheap to repair."
"As if you couldn't afford it!"
"It's the principle of the matter!"
Izuku watched the two heroes argue with wide eyes. He wasn't usually keen on interrupting people, especially ones that could end him without any trouble, but he needed answers.
"Percy, why is Mirko here?" Izuku spit out, causing the two to stop bickering and look at him.
"Rumi is here to teach you how to kick properly, and possibly train you when I can't."
"That wasn't part of the deal!" Mirko shouted before looking at Izuku with a feral grin. "Hope you're ready to work your ass off Broccoli Boy."
Izuku felt a shiver go down his spine.
"Cause I won't show any mercy."
The walk from the grocery store to his apartment was something Percy enjoyed immensely.
Nobody tried to stop him to get an autograph or ask him to pose for a photo. Sure he would get the occasional odd look, but he was able to chalk that up to him looking distinctly not Japanese.
He loved being a hero and having the opportunity to help people, but the attention and praise he received because of it didn't feel right to him. He helped people because it was the right thing to do.
Adjusting the bags in his hands, Percy skillfully weaved his way through the crowded streets of Hiroshima. He didn't mind the amount of people, it reminded him of his childhood in Manhattan where the ability the wad through crowds was a necessary survival skill.
Percy frowned slightly as hazy memories of his youth floated to the front of his mind.
He didn't remember too much of his childhood, the majority of his memories being pushed out to make room for the last one hundred and eighty or so years of events. He of course remembered things like his mom or his time at Camp Halfblood, but specific events and people's faces had become so blurry he deemed trying to recall them a waste of time.
Percy shook his head to clear unpleasant thoughts, an action that had become a habit.
He was going to go home, make chicken pot pie, watch crappy TV, and not think about how all his friends were dea-
Percy shook his head harder. He refused to become a bitter old man,
Gripping his bags tightly, Percy increased his speed, wanting to get home as fast as possible. He focused on not hitting anyone and was mostly successful before a flash of white caught his eye, causing him to stop much to the annoyance of those behind him.
Stepping out of the way, Percy backtracked until he found what distracted him from his mission.
It was a small girl, no older than six or seven, tucked away in a dark alleyway.
She had dark skin and white hair that went down just past her shoulders. She wore dirty clothes and had wide and fearful red eyes. On top of her head was a pair of white rabbit ears.
Percy felt his heart clench. He'd heard of children of children being alone on the streets, but he'd never encountered it in person.
As he walked closer, the girl stood up and raised her fists.
"Stay back!" She yelled, her legs shaking as if unable to hold her weight.
Percy stopped. He wanted to help the girl, but he couldn't do that if she didn't trust him.
Setting down his bags and dug through them until he found a carrot. He hoped she had the same tastes as her animal counterpart.
"Here," He said softly as he offered her the carrot. "You look hungry."
The girl eyed him suspiciously for a moment before darting forward grabbing the offered food and retreating. She continued to watch him the entire time she ate.
Percy scooted to the other wall of the alley and sat down, leaving plenty of room for the girl to escape if she felt she needed to.
"What's your name name?" Percy asked gently, doing his best to not frighten the girl.
"Rumi," She replied quickly, her eyes never leaving him.
"Why are you here all by yourself?"
Rumi didn't answer, opting to continue scrutinizing him.
"How long have you been by yourself?" Percy asked, hoping a different approach would work.
"I don't know."
Her voice was so small and fragile it made his heart hurt.
The two sat in silence as Percy tried to think of a way to help her.
He knew he should go to the police, but to do that he'd need Rumi to come with him. She definitely didn't trust him enough to follow him to a second location and he refused to leave her alone again. He had to do something, he just didn't know what.
"Can I have another carrot?" Rumi asked nervously after a few minutes.
Percy immediately pulled another one and started to get up to give it to her, but to his surprise, Rumi walked over to him trepidly and took it before sitting down against his wall a few feet from him.
Silence fell over the pair again
Percy didn't know how long they sat there, but when he was aware of his surroundings again, the sun had set leaving them in darkness. Looking over to where Rumi sat, he saw her struggling to stay awake, caught in a cycle of falling and jerking back awake.
"I am going to return to my apartment," Percy said, causing the girl to perk up slightly. "Would you like to come with me? You can stay by the door and I'll show you how to use the locks so you can leave at any time."
He saw her tense up, clearly considering rejecting his offer, before relaxing and nodding.
Standing up, Percy grabbed his bags and prepared to leave, motioning for Rumi to follow. The girl stood up, took a few shaky steps, and fell to the ground. Her exhaustion and hunger had finally caught up to her.
Sighing slightly, Percy set his bags down and knelt next to Rumi.
"Rumi, would you be ok with my carrying back to my apartment?"
Rumi nodded almost immediately this time, allowing Percy to pick her up and hold in a princess carry, the girl being unhealthy light. Forced to abandon his groceries, Percy made his way out of the alley, vowing that no matter what happened, the girl in his arms would never live in such conditions again.
The walk back to his apartment was short and the process of setting Rumi's sleeping area was quick as well. Even then, it was enough time for Percy to come to a decision.
He was going to do every in his power to make Rumi happy.
And as he tucked her in, he swore on the Styx to help her find a loving home.
I want to take this opportunity to say two important things.
First, this is probably going to be the most self-indulgent fic I will ever write. I will do my best to make things make sense, but some things might not make total sense. Rumi being Percy's adopted daughter is here because the image of a tired Percy attending a parent-teacher conference for the havoc his rabbit daughter caused is so vivid in my mind it hurts.
Second, Percy's POV will be for the most part contained to flashbacks. I want this story to be less about Percy and more about how his presence impacts the world of MHA.
The next chapter will probably be about getting ready for the sports festival and Midoriya's training.
'Til Next Time!
