Chapter 1: Calls In The Night

After Noah Puckerman was stationed in New York, he started getting calls from Kurt Anderson every night. Hearing Kurt's husband, Blaine, yelling at Kurt, telling him how stupid he is, he soon hears their daughter Tracy say, "No, no," before Blaine ends the call. Noah acted like he never got the calls for months. Until he came home from overseas and learned Tracy was staying on the naval base. He learns that Tracy was found on his front porch a month ago by his wife, Quinn Puckerman, and that Kurt was in a coma in the hospital.

As Noah enters Kurt's hospital room. He sees Rachel St. James, Kurt's best friend, by his bedside. Rachel keeps her eyes on Kurt as she says, "Kurt has been teaching Tracy your phone number for a year. Blaine stopped letting anyone talk to Kurt around the same time. It started after you were transferred to New York. That's why Tracy isn't with me, Puck."

Tracy's grandparents, Burt and Carole Hummel, soon rushed in, and then Burt told Noah, "After COVID-19 hit, Kurt stopped all communication with us for a year. I thought he was dead until Rachel told me what had been going on. Blaine wouldn't let anyone talk to Kurt unless he was there. I started teaching Tracy about street signs a year ago. After I showed Tracy how to get to the base, Quinn told us about finding her on your porch."

Quinn enters with Tracy before Noah takes her into his arms and says, "Uncle Nono is here, Tracy. Sorry, I couldn't save your dad." Tracy says nothing but rests her head on Noah's shoulder and instantly falls asleep.

Then Quinn says, "This is the first time she's taken a nap since Kurt was brought here. She wouldn't even sleep in the room I decorated for her. She's been sleeping in our bed since she got here. I'm glad you're here, Puck."

Noah looks at Kurt and says, "Me too, Quinn. I don't know what happened to Blaine, but I'm glad Tracy doesn't have to deal with that crap anymore." He rocks Tracy in his arms as Tim McGraw's "My Little Girl" plays on the radio, and he doesn't notice their other friends arriving or that Rachel's sister, Beth Corcoran, has entered with their mother, Shelby.

Soon, Blaine yells, "That's my family!" Rachel is about to storm out when Noah hands Tracy to her and storms out.

Something is slammed against the wall before Noah yells, "Kurt has been calling my phone ever since I moved here. Blaine! Finn was my best friend and like a brother to me! If he were alive or knew about all the crap you did to Kurt! You would be the one in a coma, not Kurt! Now, if I catch you here again! You'll regret it!" Noah storms back in, fuming as he stares at Kurt.

He looks at Burt and asks, "Did Finn or Mrs. H tell you why I had bruises as a kid growing up?"

Burt looks at Kurt and Quinn's belly as he says, "No, but Quinn did the last time she was pregnant." Tracy cries, and Noah cradles her in his arms as he glances at Beth.

He sighs and asks, "Beth, do you know about your parents?"

Beth pats Tracy's head, saying, "Kurt told me last year when everyone asked him why he chose you and Quinn as Tracy's godparents. Mama tried to save Tracy after she learned about Blaine." They hear Blaine return, and Noah storms out.

Burt follows him before they yell, "You lost your right to be Tracy's father the first time you hit Kurt!" Something hit the wall again.

Then Burt yells, "I trusted you! How could you do that to Kurt? Answer me!" Quinn and Carole storm out to see Burt choking Blaine.

As Burt lets go, Blaine gasps, "Kurt brought this on himself. If he had stayed away from Puck as I asked, we wouldn't be here right now."

Noah soon gets in Blaine's face and yells, "I am straight, Blaine! Kurt is my friend! Kurt loves you! He called me because he needed help leaving you. It took my dad leaving my mom for her to see she was better off without him, Blaine! I tried to get Kurt to see he doesn't need your abuse and can do better."

Noah looks at Burt, who says, "Since COVID-19 hit, Blaine. You have been so controlling of Kurt. I thought he was dead. Why would you cut us out of his life like that?"

Blaine says arrogantly, "Kurt is mine. He isn't a Hummel anymore, and he belongs to me. The sooner he realizes that, the better."

Noah punches Blaine and whispers, "Kurt is not your property. You don't own him, and if you ever return here again, I will make damn sure you never see Tracy or Kurt again. Do I make myself clear?" Blaine pees himself in fear but says nothing as he runs out.

Noah returns to Kurt's room and picks up Tracy, asleep on Kurt's chest. He looks out the window and says, "Tracy, I understand what it's like to have a father who hates his family. My dad hated my mom for having me. My dad never wanted kids and left when my sister Sarah was not much older than you. She was raised by my Nana Connie or your Nana Carole."

He looks at Carole and continues, "When I got Quinn pregnant, I thought I could be a better father than my dad. Then she made everyone think Beth was Finn's and cut me out. When we gave up Beth, I thought she would be better off with Shelby. Now that Quinn is having another baby, I realize I don't want to be a loser like my dad."

He looks at Kurt as he says, "Kurt didn't just call me. He sent me pictures of his bruised face or fingerprints on his neck. It started when Tracy was a month old. Kurt told me to tell you and told me he was leaving Blaine so many times. I lost count. When I learned he was here, I knew if Kurt didn't wake up, I would have to tell you."

Noah sighs and says, "I'm not Finn. Finn would have gotten Kurt out sooner and wouldn't have let it get this far. I'm sorry, Mr. H."

Burt looks at Tracy and says, "Puck, you did your best."

He chuckled, then continued, "I doubt Finn could make Blaine pee his pants. I mean, I love Finn, but you're more intimidating than me."

Quinn takes Burt's cap and puts it on Noah's head. She chuckles and says, "Just remember. You're my Mr. P."

She bumps into Burt and says, "You're not Finn, Puck, but you're like Mr. H in a lot of ways."

Noah gives Burt his hat back and looks at Tracy. He brushes her hair out of her face and says, "I never felt like I was her uncle. Kurt is like a brother to me, but I love Tracy as if she were my own. I'm sure Mr. H felt that way about Finn."

Burt puts his hand on Noah's shoulder and says, "Both of you, Puck. Family is more than DNA. I learned that after Kurt's mom died."

Then Quinn tells Burt, "I know Norah will be this baby's grandma. But I was wondering if you and Mrs. H would accept our baby as your grandchild, too."

Before Burt can respond, they hear Kurt say, "Over my dead body! I'm not sharing my dad with Puck! Carole is one thing, but..."

Soon, Noah kisses Kurt, then Tracy giggles and says, "Dada, stop worrying. If you keep worrying, you'll have a heart attack." before everyone laughs.

Noah soon had the others leave and told Kurt, "Chill, Kurt. I won't steal your dad. Plus, I'm still straight."

Noah sits beside Kurt's bed and continues, "Now, Tracy, on the other hand." Noah chuckles, but doesn't continue.

Kurt says, "Well, you were her first crush, Puck."

Then he whispers, "You know Blaine won't back down, Puck."

Noah shows Kurt a picture of his guns on his phone and says, "Nor will I, Kurt. I won't let Tracy return to that hell."

Noah watches Burt return before saying, "Your dad fought for you for years, Kurt. It's about time someone stepped up. I don't love you, but I love Tracy. There is no way I will let her grow up in an abusive home like I did."

Kurt sits up and says, "Puck, can I stay with you when I'm released? I don't want to stay with Dad and since Tracy is with you, I feel like I will be safer at your house."
