Author's Note: This story is intended to be an AU, where things will play out very differently to the books or movies. I'm not going to go into much detail about plot points or plans for this story, but I will try to use the books as a very loose guide to the story and pacing. As the story moves along, it may either expedite, push back or end up entirely skipping major plot points you may be familiar with. Currently story is rated M to be safe, but that being said I do plan for there to be some scenes of violence and most likely lemon scenes later in the story.

October 31st, 1980

The cold air hung heavy over the sleepy town of Godric's Hollow. Empty tree branches shivered in the darkened air as a milky fog curled along the ground. A lone owl called into the night as a figure seemed to rise out of the mist. Clad head to toe in white armor, the warrior strode confidently down the abandoned street. Two large wings, which shone blue in stark contrast seemed to pulse and hum with a life of their own. The figure's face was covered with an angular helmet. Blue glass covered the eyes, which burned with an inner fire. A long tail trailing behind him twitched in anticipation. Coming to his destination, the figure turned to stare into the window of the house before him. A black haired man was playing with a small baby on the couch, oblivious to the observer outside. As he smiled lovingly at the child, a beautiful red haired woman entered and spoke to him. With a kiss, she lifted the baby away from the man and walked away from the window.

On the street, Lord Voldemort's eyes narrowed inside of his helmet. His draconic claw twitched in anticipation. The large blue gem mounted on the right hand of his armor flashed and a disembodied voice rang out.

"I must again advise you against this course of action, Tom. James Potter is no fool and he is sure to have been investigating anti-draconic measures since your last encounter. Engaging him alone, on his territory, could bring down a world of hurt on us both."

"This must be something done by own hand, Albion," Tom Riddle sneered, "After tonight, the last Pillar in Britain who defy my rule will be dead and there will be none left to challenge me." The voice was silent before responding in a weary tone.

"Very well. Just try to avoid your usual grandstanding with him, you sound like Draig when you get going. Be done with this, quickly."

Tom placed a clawed hand on the gate and pushed it silently open. His metal feet crunched up the walkway until he came to the door. Producing his wand from a slot in the armor's right wrist he pointed it at the door and with a silent blasting curse blew it off its hinges. He crossed the threshold and James Potter ran into the hallway, wand out. The man's eyes widened at the sight of him. "It's him Lily! Grab Harry and run, I'll hold him off!" A narrow beam shot from James's wand towards Lord Voldemort. As it hit him, the blue wings on his back flared to life and a voice called out " DIVIDE!" The beam of light seemed to splinter around his white armor and disappear into the wings, which began to glow. Voldemort stopped, feeling smug.

"Did you really think that paltry spell would be enough, Potter? Once I'm through with you, I'm going to take care of your filthy spawn. Don't worry about the bitch, she's to become the plaything of my most loyal servant," he sneered at James. James's face took on a mask of rage and a red circle appeared around his free hand.

"You'll die before you touch a hair on her or Harry's head," James growled, and two narrow black wings burst from behind him, filling the hall. With a shout, he began firing spells from his wand while the sigil shot bullets of red light towards the white armored Voldemort. The wings on his back flared to life again, and he used them to shoot towards a startled James Potter. As he planted his fist into the man's gut, knocking the air out of his lungs, the call of " DIVIDE!" again sounded, and Voldemort seemed to glow with energy. James Potter sagged to his knees, struggling to catch his breath. With almost contemptuous ease, Voldemort placed his wand on the back of the man's neck.

"With your death, I show the other Pillars that Britain is mine. The Pillar of Potter is no more." A flash of green erupted in the hall, and James Potter crumpled where he kneeled. Wasting no time, Voldemort walked to the stairs and began to climb. The steps protested the heavy steps of his armored form as he heard frantic movement from what he assumed was the child's nursery. Reaching the upper hall, he strode towards the door between him and the sound. Using the strength his armor gave him, he reared back and kicked through the door, splintering it. Inside, Lily Potter spun around to face him, flinging her arms out to shield the child in the crib from him.

"No please, not Harry! Take me instead, kill me!"

"Stand aside, foolish girl. I'm here for him, not you!"

"Take me," She pleaded, grabbing his metal arm. "Just leave Harry and I'll come with you, you can kill me instead!" Growing weary, Voldemort backhanded her with his armored forearm and knocked her into the wall with a loud snap. Still coursing with strength, he looked down on the slumped body of the woman with a smirk. Her neck was tilted at an unnatural angle, and her green eyes were wide but unseeing, staring beyond him. Severus would be disappointed, but there would be plenty of women to elevate into his own peerage. Voldemort now looked on the Potter spawn, the one Dumbledore had gone to great lengths to hide from him. Allowing a grin to play out over his serpentine face, he carefully aimed at the Potter brats face with his wand. The child looked up at him with curious eyes, staring into the face of the man who would have Magical Britain under his heel after tonight.

Allowing himself a moment to savor his triumph, Voldemort spoke the now familiar words. "Avada Kedavra!" And the next moment was pain, agony, confusion. He was undone, a shell, barely clinging to this plane. He could feel his defeat, but that was unimportant at the moment. He had to hide, to flee, and to recover. He was dimly aware of the bawling of a child behind him as the spirit that had once been Lord Voldemort fled into the surrounding countryside.

Sirius Black cut the throttle to his motorcycle and stared in disbelief at the ruined shell of the Potter's safe house before him. As soon as his amulet from James had begun to burn on his chest, he had known in his heart his oldest friend was in deep trouble. Now, seeing the ruin of his best friend's house he felt his stomach drop out. Movement in the rubble caught his eye and he watched the looming form of Rubeus Hagrid step out, holding a small bundle.

"Hagrid!" he called, hailing the large man. "Are Lily and James…?" He couldn't finish the thought, feeling a wave of nausea sweep through him. Hagrid shook his head, fat tears streaming down his large face. "Sorry Sirius, I'm afrai' Lily 'nd James are…are," Sirius raised a hand, cutting the larger man off. He didn't think he could handle hearing the words at the moment. As his world teetered around him, his vision tunneled in on the small bundle resting in Hagrid's hands. Swallowing around a suddenly dry throat, he nodded at Hagrid's load, not trusting himself to speak. The large man shifted the bundle around, allowing Sirius to come face to face with his godson. A cut in the shape of a lightning bolt now marked the boy's forehead and as those green eyes stared at him, Lily's eyes, thought Sirius, he felt his grief boil up.

"Give him here Hagrid," Sirius indicated. "Lily and James made me godfather. I need to take him to Black Manor." Hagrid hesitated, fidgeting nervously.

"Sorry Sirius, Dumbledore asked me to bring 'im to his Aunt and Uncle. Said I was to come straight away." Sirius felt the swirling maelstrom of emotion within him coalesce and focus into a single beam of rage toward the man in front of him. He stepped closer to the half-giant, staring up into his face.

"You misunderstand, Groundskeeper," Sirius practically spat. "I don't give a rat's arse what the old man told you. You hold the heir to the Noble and Most Ancient Pillar House of Potter like a sack of laundry. As heir-in-waiting of the Noble and Most Ancient Pillar House of Black, I was charged with Harry's wellbeing should the worst come to pass. And now I find Dumbledore's lackey trying to spirit him away in the dead of night, before the Aurors can even arrive to secure the scene?" Though Hagrid loomed over the smaller man, he cowered as the youngest Black began to vent on the larger man.

"If you attempt to go through with this, I will use everything in my arsenal to see you tried before the Wizengamot. Do you know what the penalty is for interfering in a Noble house's succession? Execution! And that's only what the wizards might do to you."

A set of black wings flared out from behind Sirius. Hagrid took a step back, and what little color had remained in his face now drained. "Y-you're a…"

"Yes Hagrid. As was James Potter." The fight seemed to go out of Sirius, and he slumped, staring in despondence at the ground. "My best friend is dead. The only thing I can do to honor him is make sure his son grows up with the best life I can give him. If you and Dumbledore want to try and contest that, then the Dukes of Hell will certainly have something to say about it, along with whatever penalties the wizard houses decide to level at you." Sirius extended his arms and motioned to Hagrid. "I won't ask again Hagrid, give me Harry or I'll take him from you by force." After a brief moment, Hagrid shuffled forward with his head bowed, and handed the child over to Sirius.

"My apologies, Sir-my Lord," he muttered deferentially. "Yer of course right. I'll tell Dumbledore." The large man shuffled away and picked up a hubcap sitting on the sidewalk outside of the Potter's fence. It glowed blue, then Hagrid and the hubcap were gone. Sirius, turned from the ruined shell of the Potters and walked slowly toward the sidewalk. His eyes were only for the small bundle now resting in his arms. Harry reached a tiny hand towards him and Sirius lowered a finger to the boy, watching him grab the offered digit. Multiple pops sounded around him as other wizards finally arrived, giving horrified gasps as they took in the wreck behind Sirius.

"Oh Padfoot," he heard a sigh behind him and turned to stare into the watery eyes of Amelia Bones. "He finally got to them didn't he? I thought you and James had set up a Fidelius on this place."

"We did," whispered Sirius, his own tears starting to finally flow. "James wanted to use me as secret keeper but I talked him into picking Peter. He must have told him…it's my fault Harry's parents are dead." He sobbed out loud, dropping to his knees, still cradling the infant. Amanda knelt with Sirius and hugged him, letting him sob on her shoulder.

"Everyone knows you would have died for them Padfoot," she soothed him. "James and Lily knew that most of all. Your only crime here is putting your faith in a man who you believed to be your friend and betrayed two of the brightest lights in Brittan. Rest assured, Pettigrew will pay for this." She took a deep breath and glanced around her.

"Sirius, all of this…is he gone? What happened here?"

"Ah Madam Bones, I believe I can provide some insight into the events of tonight," a calm old voice cut through the chatter of the aurors, who parted for the man striding down the street towards them. A long white beard hung nearly to his waist, and his eyes, normally bright and full of cheer were instead clouded with sorrow. Albus Dumbledore paused to take in the destroyed house, bowing his head in grief before turning to Amelia and Sirius.

"Lord Voldemort believed that young Harry Potter would one day grow to be the one who defeated him. Acting upon this belief, he has spent the last several weeks hunting for the Potters and their child. It seems now that this belief was well founded. The curse he cast on young Harry appears to have rebounded and destroyed his physical form." There was a palpable sigh of relief from the aurors surrounding them upon these words.

"If what you say is true Albus, then the whole Wizarding world owes little Harry a great debt," Amelia said with reverence. "Once his followers hear of his defeat, I suspect many will surrender immediately. We can end this war tonight!" Albus gave her a sad half-smile, then turned his piercing blue eyes on Sirius.

"Sirius…Hagrid came to me most upset. I gave him specific instructions to bring Harry to me. He will be safest living away from our world, until a time he is ready to accept this news. I know you don't want to give him up, but it's for the greater good." Dumbledore's words seemed to finally stir Sirius, who looked up at him with hate flickering in his eyes. Sirius slowly climbed to his feet, and turned to face Dumbledore.

"If Hagrid already came running to you, then he told you my declaration. You may have your moments Albus, but interfering in the succession rights of a noble house would not be a timely or wise move. As per James and Lily's will, Harry will be coming to live with me. After me, Frank and Alice Longbottom will assume care of Harry. Assuming the worst were to befall them, then Harry will be cared for by Houses Bones, Greengrass and Gremory in that order. But he will never go to live with Petunia. How could you think Lily would ever want that? Shame on you." Sirius turned his back to Dumbledore, missing the flash of anger cross the old man's face.

"Amelia, I'll be taking Harry to Black Manor with me tonight. If you have any questions for me, I'd be happy to answer them there. I'll also need to request some time off from auror duties to handle arrangements for Harry."

"Of course, Sirius," Amelia drew herself up and turned to the man. "The Noble and Most Ancient House of Bones formally recognizes Sirius Orion Black, Heir-in-Waiting to the Noble and Most Ancient Pillar House of Black as the guardian of Harry James Potter, Heir Apparent to the Noble and Most Ancient Pillar House of Potter. If there's anything you need, you have only to ask." After a firm handshake, Sirius stepped away and disapparated with a loud crack. Amelia turned to give Dumbledore a withering glare.

"The Potters aren't even in the ground yet and you're up to your usual games with an orphaned boy? Shame on you, Dumbledore. If you try to interfere in that boy's childhood, I'll have the other Noble houses on you so fast your head will spin. Now this is an active Department of Magical Law Enforcement investigation, so I'll have to ask you to leave the scene. Maybe find a party to attend, I'm sure there will be plenty tonight. I have to bury my friends- your students!"

Recognizing he had little choice, Dumbledore bent his head to Madam Bones and turned away, silently fuming. Harry was his one chance to upend the rigid hierarchy of the Noble houses and they were already closing ranks around the boy. Dumbledore was nothing if not patient however, and knew that with the right favors and backroom deals he may be able to get the boy moved to his aunt's care. Petunia may not be the most pleasant woman, but she would keep Harry humble and keep him isolated from the magical world so Dumbledore could lay the groundwork for his return. Deep in thought, Dumbledore disaparrated back to the castle to begin his work. Meanwhile, around the country the news was spreading like wildfire. Many a drink was raised in a hushed toast "To Harry Potter…The-Boy-Who-Lived
