Something was wrong and everyone could see it.
Something was wrong with the Salvatore brothers.
The original family and Scooby gang (as Damon had taken to calling them) were at the Mystic Grill watching their friends and spouse drinking.
Stefan and Damon Salvatore were sitting side by side with a glass in their hand and silance. They have been almost two hours in the same position without saying a word to each other.
This silance was killing their friends knowing that they couldn't help them, they were not able to help them because Stefan and Damon had stopped talking. This started almost four days ago with Stefan snapping at Rebekah for asking a simple question they were shocked at that day, between the two Salvatore brothers, Stefan was the most calm, the voice of the logical. Hearing and seen Stefan raising his voice at his wife of 3 years it was something that they never expected.
Rebekah have been shut up in her bedroom ever since Stefan yelled at her.
Everyone will wonder how Stefan end up marrying Rebekah well, after they'd dealt with Esther and Finn as well as their crazy -doomed from the start- plan, Stefan found out Elena didn't love him and only had been using him he found himself in Damon's shoes, he felt what Damon had felt with Katherine and the sudden respect and understanding that he felt had began to heal their relationship.
They spent more time together acting more like brothers than ever. They renovated their house, banishing the memories of their father and all their bad times. Every week they left the Mystic Fall to have a brother night, drinking, hunting and be alone, people around them were used to the brothers leaving and were not worried about them.
Speaking of people, Bonnie wasn't surprised when Stefan and Damon dumped Elena and didn't care, people
only saw Elena Gilbert; the sweet, innocent, compassionate human who would do anything for her friends and family but Bonnie knew better. Elena was just a manipulating, boring, selfish bitch. The only reason everyone was drools over her because she was looks exactly like Katherine and Tatia.
After the ball, Bonnie withdeaw herself from Elena, still blamed her for her grandmother death and her mother becoming a vampire, allowing herself to be more comfortable with being a witch but find herself. Without being in the shadow of Caroline and Elena, the young witch find to have more common with Damon, spent more time together gaining a brother, an annoying one. She also find Rebekah to be a wonderful addition to her life.
The thousand year old plastic doll decided to tell Bonnie a thing or two about Bonnie's ancestors, and why not, share a little bit about her troubled mind and life just to see how much Bonnie would care.
Bonnie was bitter inside and Rebekah kind of knew and felt it. Takes one to know one. How would she know that Elena's best friend would be so ready to welcome her and even better, pay attention and give credit to what she said?
Rebekah came in with a broken and fragile heart, unstable mind and nobody by her side. Bonnie couldn't give much because, there were not much left to give.
What a way to live your eternal life, huh, Rebekah?
And without really noticing -really?- they had some type of bonding. Maybe destiny have put them together.
Who fucking knows?
The badass female original helped her to gain more confidence in her but help her to get a new family and a boyfriend.
The Mikaelson had adopted her, Elijah and Klaus found a new sister to annoying while Kol found his match. Kol Mikaelson was suppose to be this cold calculating monsterbut Bonnie had the ability to turn him into a giant plush animal and she didn't have to use her magic to do it.The story of how Kol Mikaelson fell in love with the Bennett witch was a long one and one to be told another day.
Anyway, Bonnie knowing the story of the two blondes, wanted to help her new friend. Plotting with the help of Damon and Alaric to set them up was incredible exhausting, having Elena acting like a 5 year old, Caroline wanting to be included in and been mad because Klaus stopped chase after her and Stefan with Rebeka been completely obvious.
Bonnie had became angry and upset about the fail attempts but Bonnie walked into the Salvatore house using a key that have been given by Damon, almost had a heart attack. Rebelah had been blowing Stefan near the fridge and Bonnie had screamed like a girl, claimed she was going blind and that she was never, nevercoming back here again.
"There is a time and a place! Common decency Stefan, I mean seriously!" Bonnie had shouted as she had left and Rebekah had laughed so much that it had almost been worth the lost orgasm that had happened when Stefan 's utter embarrassment had kicked in.
But moving on.
Elijah tried to not roll his eyes hearing Caroline talking, the young blonde had been talking off like two hours straight to get Klaus attention. The eye of the original were glued at his husband, for the last three days Damon became more angry, kept himself away from his family, from Elijah, something that hurt the older man to much.
Elijah and Damon hadn't liked each other much to start with. There'd been a spark there, of sorts, but it was the kind that burned, not warmed. Elijah saw the way people looked at the two of them together, the way they'd watch them as if the moments of tension—the recurring disagreements—meant something more than they did. It took Elijah a while to realise that he'd gone from thinking Daman was an ass, to wishing Damon was there when things were bad, to taking some sort of comfort in him even before that first kiss at Grill's, even before they truly became something more.
Seeing Damon being back to self-hatred, back to his old self ,hurt him but the fact that Damon refused to speak him hurt Elijah most. They were supposed to trust each other, love and care, Elijah knew better now. He knew Damon carried the weight of something so heavy that it managed to crush everything else. Elijah wanted desperately to help him carry it.
"Why so blue!" Katherine interrupted them all, everyone turned their heads and most of the people in the room froze, as she lives and breathes Katherine Pierce, stood by the door, leaning against it as she smiled at them.
"Only you seem to be capable of sneaking up on all the originals Kat"Bonnie sounding amused looking at her.
Kat smiled at her friend while Rebekah gave her a glass of wine.
For some unknown and incomprehensible reason, Kathrine Pierce became one of Bonnie and Rebekah closest friend.
Bonnie Bennett, Katherine Pierce and Rebekah Mikaelson where 'hanging out together'.
It is hard to explain from any point of view.
Maybe it was the loneliness. Maybe it was the feeling of being left behind. Hard to decide which common feeling tied them together.
"Why hello, you," says Klaus , drinking , trying to keep calm and carry on.
"Kathrine ," says Elijah, and since he doesn't smile, not even a little, not even a tiny smidgen of a smile, it's bad, really really bad, so Kathrine can't smile either.
" Where are Damon and Stefan?" Kathrine asked, realizing for the first time that they was missing. Now that she thought about it, they didn't come in with the familu. She didn't even remember seeing the. Kathrine noticed how Rebekah flinched and Kol curled in on himself, something Kathrine couldn't imagine the tough original doing until now. When no one said anything, she turned to Klaus. "Where are they ?"
Kathrine looked as confused as the rest of them, then as if she had a moment of clarity, she let out a small 'oh' and deflated slightly.
"What do you mean 'oh'?" Klaus questioned."Are they okay?"
"They, uh, has to do something important today. It's kinda of a special day for the brothers ."
"Oh, is it someones birthday?" Bonnie asked curiously.
"No, just special." Kathrine said quietly. She frowned.
Kathrine leaned forward, burying her face in Bonnie's neck. "They remember !" she whispered. "Stefan remembers the day he lost all and Damon the day he started to hate himself and the word !"
Caroline's face becomes a smile that looks bright and cheerful."You meant the day they had met you!"
Katherine stands up. She moves like a cat and Caroline feels envious.
She stood staring at the them in stunned silence, her expression haunted.
''Beacuse of me Damon started to hate feelings and love''Kathrerin meuttered truthfully, ruffling a hand through her hair.''Because of her death Damon started to hate peope and his-self''
Hearing Kathrine talking, Elijah deep down knew that something was wrong with Damon. He's been acting weird all week, and he's been extra clingy.
Elijah isn't complaining, he loves cuddling his husband , and he loves kissing him, and he melts about any time Damon actively seeks contact with him, and it would be a great thing if Damon wasn't so…sad.
He seems sad. Sometimes he'll look at the mirror , examining him like he's trying to find something there with a sad frown and sometimes they'll all be together at house and Damon's shoulders will tense and he's going to look defeated.
Elijah 's crazy worried he did something wrong but every time he asks Damon if everything's alright, he just smiles and kisses him and that's the end of it.
"How is he?" Bonnie asked looking behind at Damon, who was leaning against the bar tiredly with hia eyes closed. "He doesn't look good."
Carolinw turned to look at Damon and frowned in concern as he checked her. Even Klaus had to admit that the woman looked terrible. He had dark circles under his eyes and her stance was slumped tiredly, not his usual hunter like stance.
"When was the last time they slept?" Kol asked in concern as he also looked over at his brothers-in-law
"Honestly? I have no idea." Rebekah sighed in frustration, concern written all over her face. "New told that Stefan thinks we don't know that he isn't sleeping lately and he isn't talking, so I don't know what's wrong." She turned to Bonnie then. "Are you getting anything from their thick brain?"
"Only their trying to convince themselves that they were fine without sleeping so far." The witch rolled her eyes at that. "And apparently Stefan actually managed to do that."
"Stubborn Salvatores." Klaus shook his head with a sigh.
"Did you try talking to them?"Kol asked carefully, watching as Stefan leaned towards Damon, talking to him, looking worried and getting a smile from the older brother and an 'I'm fine'.
"I did. I think they are too tired to talk." Caroline's shoulders slumped in surrender. "After we finish with this both Elijah and Rebekah will try to force them to sleep. Even if they have to sit on them."
Damon stood near to the bar, looking out the empty glass in his hand. He felt Elijah's hands on his shoulders, he looked up and saw his concerned face looking back at him.
"Sweetheart, are you alright? You look out of sorts." He asked with worry.
"I'm fine." Damon reassured, getting back some control over hiaself.
"Are you sure? ?" why did he keep asking so many fucking questions?! It was annoying as hell right now.
"Are you sure? You and Stefan acts strangely, everyone must be worried about you." of course, they was worried. People especially Elijah was always worried. Like Damon was some kind of a child who only manages to get himself in fucking trouble.
"I am fine. Are we done here? ." Damon said, then stood up and walked away.
It took Elijah a few moments to recover from the shock. First, it was the way Damon spoke to him. So cold and distant. And the second, his eyes. It was the first time the original husband saw his, usually, warm blue eyes lifeless, dull, without any trace of light and warmth. If he didn't know better, Elijah would think Damon switched off his emotions. 'But that can't be it, could it?' Elijah thought, then ran after him.
"Damon! Wait! What's going on? Why are you like this?" Elijah asked, catching up with him by his car.
"Leave me alone!" He warned, not turning back.
"Damon? Please talk to me! What ever it is, we'll work it over. But please don't shut me out." Elijah pleaded, and tried to touch him so that he would look at him.
Big mistake. Elija felt him flinch as if he was burned by vervain. However, he regretted his wish as soon as he turned. There it was. The hatred in his eyes. But, this time, he seemed more violent. Elijah eyes widened in fear when he spoke.
"Don't ever touch me again! Leave me the hell alone!"
"Brother. Calm down." Stefan said calmly, but he was anything but.
Elijah turned toward Stefan and asked. "Stefan? What's wrong with him? Why did he act like this? Did he switch off his emotions? If he did, why? What happened?"
"I'm sorry, Elijah, but I can't tell you. However, he didn't switch them off, that much is certain."
"What? Why can't you tell me? Please Stefan? He needs our help!"
"I'm sorry. I can't. And trust me, it's for the best to keep away from him right now." Stefan answered. No, he couldn't betray his brother's trust.
"You don't think he would actually hurt Elijah?" Klaus asked, appalled. He was also worried. Not even in his worst, Damon never lashed out at Elijah like that.
"I don't know." Stefan confessed. "But you better stay away from him." He added then went after his brother.
Desdemona Salvatore
She was older sister of Damon and Stefan Salvatore. She looked like a mirror image of Damon: Coal black hair and piercing blue eyes with radiant skin that was just lightly tanned.
Most would describe her as to be rebellious, emotional, troubled, insecure, misunderstood, impulsive, competitive and irresponsible and seemed to lack a general sense of direction as she never took her etiquette lessons seriously and had always preferred to be roughhousing with her brothers than acting like a proper lady of the 1840's which lead to her and her father to never get along as Giuseppe frequently expressed extreme disappointment in his daughter and often than not was trying to get her to act more ladylike so that he could court her off to one of the founding family sons, George Lockwood despite her resenting the idea of being sold off.
She was the last Salvatore in the bloodline as their mother died shortly after giving birth to Stefan. Unfortunately she was stripped of her life when she had really only started living. By fire.
When she was 20, their father forced her to marry a rich man, Damon and Stefan were against that and fought with all their power back then to stop it but only had made the thing worse. They were forced to watch their sister leave their house, be way from the was the worst part. They kept touch from letters, wanting to know hwo married life had threatened her.
Six years have been passed with the three of them exchange letters and moping, until one day their father announced that they sister have been killed. After that Damon lost himself.
For years he killed without caring. Just wanting his little sister back. He still had nightmares every night about her demise. It was as though his mind was a broken record and could do nothing but repeat the dreadful moment. That all changed when he met Elijah though. Yes, he still had the nightmares, and yes he still begged the high heavens to return his sister to him but Elijah had slowly began to stitch up the hole in his chest with her love and kindness towards others.
Desdemona had been 20 when she died. So young and beautiful and loved. No one could have loved her more than Damon did. That was one girl that could not be replaced by anyone. No matter how close the resemblance was or how she talked, walked or acted. No one would be the same as his little sister. No one.
He could feel eyes on him while he walked toward the woods. His eyes were full of tears. He didn't want to let go of hrt. He couldn't. He started walking faster, until he was practically running toward the cemetery, wishing he could just switch off his emotions. But doing that would also mean losing his humanity, losing the love he felt, and still feels for his best friend, his sister, his other half.
The older brother found himself in front of the female Salvatore's grave, tears streaming down his face. His heart literally hurt from all the pain he was feeling.
"Its not fair!"
"It was supposed to be Stefan , you and I against the word. Not Stefan and I. You supposed to be here teasing me for my crush or bullying me for been mean to Stefan."He took a nice long drink and buried his head in his hands. " You supposed to be here with us laughing and smiling like we used to do together. You left me alone here with nothing but a half soul and half side of the coin. It's not the same and somewho is my fault, if I had fought harder against father wish to marry you off . You would loved Elijah and Rebekah , two they make us happy and drive us crazy at the same time. It has your favorite hobby when you were alive"
"You supposed to..."
"I supposed to..
He supposed the one buried under that gravestone would like that, or at least the older Salvatore brother believed he deserved that, if he fought that night with his father about the marriage, if he could had help her better ,she could be her now with them. Be together like family , teasing each other , laughing and fighting.
Damon is actually a little drunk when he cracks the second bottle. He brings it to his lips.
He finds he liked that way that sounded so he says it again. "I miss you," he says. I really fucking miss you, man."
He takes a long pull from the bottle.
"Every fucking day, I miss you." Usually he is silent in the crypt but talking to her is not unheard of. "I'm never going to forgive myself for my part in… what happened." This is a promise. It's one he makes some days when the weather's been good and his belly is full of blood and he's sexually sated, or nearly so. He promises again that he'll never forgive himself. It's like drawing blood from a cut in his arm. Settles him a little.
Damon has drunk half of the second bottle and vampire constitution or not, he is pretty drunk. He's not talking anymore, just swaying. Remembering some of the best moments because they hurt the worst.
There is a sound outside like broken branches, a soft thud. Could be a boar, they come out this far from time to time. Too heavy to be a deer.
Damon took a moment to rest, head hanging, thinking over the last hours. They were without a doubt the longest hours of his life.
"Not now Steffy"
"It's not Stefan"A familiar voice called his attention and his heart ached at the sound. Her's voice. It couldn't be true. His mind was playing tricks on him. She was dead. That much he remembered even though he wished he didn't. He wished it had only been a terrible nightmare.
"Damon!"
He blinked again and the room around him started to take clearer shape. He lifted his gaze just enough to see the person standing in front of him and at first he didn't recognize them in the light of the moon.
She was leaning against the tree. Damon stared at her unable to believe she was really there. She came closer, there was a bluish glow around her, but she was solid…she was there. She reached out a hand to touch the face of his, but all Damon could feel was a warm tingling sensation. His heart sank as he had hoped to be able to touch her.
"Brother"She breathed out.
Damon fell to his knees, his heart shattering to pieces.
