First Chapter of the new year! Also this year, 2024, marks the year when the Crisis on Infinite Earths was originally supposed to be. I've even heard that the creators of the show planned for it to be the series finale, perhaps to give Barry an ending like on the original comic, where he dies in Crisis, but they decided to give that to Oliver Queen instead. In less than a month (February 3, 2024) is when the Flash season 3, episode 19, "The Once and Future Flash," takes place. I do have an idea for an au of that episode, but can't promise to publish a chapter by then. But I will promise to publish a chapter of "Four Peters VS. The Sinister Six" by then. This April (April 25, 2024, to be exact) is when Iris or Julie Greer's article about The Flash's disappearance get published. I'll probably be finished with this story by then, but I will publish a Flash story then (Perhaps a sequel or spinoff to this story?).
Also, RIP to actor Glynis Johns, who is probably best known as Winifred Banks in "Mary Poppins" and the Grandmother in "While You Were Sleeping."
Chapter 6
Peter, Norman, Otto, and Caitlin begin to make cures for the rest of the multiversal visitors. At the moment, just Norman and Otto are in the room as Norman is taking notes for the cures.
"How does it feel, Norman?" Otto asks him. "You're about to become whole again. No more darker half, just you."
"Just me," Norman replied in an almost darker tone. Norman turns to Otto and gives him a smile to reassure Otto, who smiles back. After a few minutes, Otto leaves to get a snack, leaving Norman alone with the fabricator.
In the living room, Peter is on his laptop, finishing a device for Max.
"Ok, it just goes right here. This…" Peter tells him as he places the device on Max's chest. It makes a chime and starts to light up. "That should be drawing power now. I'm gonna come back in a second just to check on it, but keep an eye on the lights. When they're all green, it means that all the electricity in your body's dissipated. Well, not all the electricity, obviously. You need electricity for your brain to function. Your nervous system is…" Peter stops babbling, realizing Max isn't interested. "I'm not really sure why I'm explaining electricity to you."
"As long as machines don't use the electricity in us to power them." Caitlin joked.
Peter and Max turn to her. "Did you just reference the Matrix movies?" Peter asked.
"Uh, Yeah."
"Didn't really take you as a sci-fi or movie nerd," Max noted.
"No, but my Peter and our friend, Cisco, are. I think he and Ned would get along."
"Then if your Peter is anything like this kid, then I assume that these are his Legos, not yours, Caitlin."
Before Peter can respond, he hears a chime from the fabricator room.
"Uh, I gotta go, I'll be back." He lets them know before leaving. Max, feel uncomfortable with wearing the device.
"Something feels off."
"What do you mean? Does it hurt?" Caitlin assures him.
"No, I just…don't like this"
"I know, but it's almost over. We'll all be going to our respective homes soon."
"She's right, the sooner we get through this, the sooner we go home," Flint states.
"So, how are we doing?" Peter asks Otto and Norman as he enters the room.
"Just finishing Caitlin's cure." Norman replied as the fabricator finishes filling a vial with liquid.
"Yeah, Caitlin will be glad to get back to her Peter thanks to this."
"Yes, I agree. It's nice to help people for the first time in weeks." Otto told them. He wanted to help the world with his fusion reactor. His tentacles played on his ego to make the fusion reactor again. It made him rob a bank and nearly kill Peter's girlfriend, those commuters on the train, and all the people he could have killed with the 2nd reactor. So helping cure people like Caitlin was a nice change of pace.
Peter, Otto, and Norman returned to the main room of the apartment with Caitlin's cure.
"Here's yours, Caitlin." Norman tells her, holding the vial out to her.
"Are you sure? Have you checked the data?" She asks.
"Yes, it'll work. Trust me," Norman says a little insistently.
She takes the cure in her hand. Normally, she'd insist on running tests before taking a cure. But she'd become impatient. She had spent months with Frost in the driver seat, working with Savitar and fighting her friends and boyfriend. She was one sip away from her happily ever after.
"Well, cheers." she tells them before taking a sip.
But just as she puts the vial to her lips, Peter's "tingle" tingles.
"Wait, something's wrong," He warns her.
She sighs before putting the vial down, "You're right, I should check the data myself and at least run a test. No offense, Doctor Osborn."
"It's not that, I'm getting a "Peter tingle.""
"A "Peter tingle?"" She says, a little uncomfortable that a teenage doppelgänger of her boyfriend just said that.
"It's a somewhat psychic early warning system I get."
"Oh! You mean your "Spider Sense.""
Peter is shocked to hear another, better, name for his tingle and turns to May.
"Really, May?! You came up with "Peter tingle" and she comes up with "Spider Sense?!"
"Oh, I didn't, my Peter said that our friend, Ronnie, came up with the idea."
"Well, I'll give her that, it sounds better and it's a part of your Spider powers." May says before asking. "But what was the "Spider sense" warning you about?"
Peter then looks around at the six multiversal visitors, and starts to look towards Max.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" He asks.
Peter continues to look around, still confused about the danger. He then closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, focusing on his newly dubbed "Spider Sense." After opening his eyes, he then shoots a web towards Norman's hand, which was on the robot arm.
"That's some neat trick, that sense of yours," Norman says, with a tone conveying more confidence than before.
"Norman?" Otto asked.
"Norman's on sabbatical, honey!"
"The hell?" Max said, confused what was happening.
"The Goblin." Peter exclaimed before briefly turning to May and Caitlin, giving them a look telling them "this could go sideways, grab the cures!"
""No more darker half,"" The Goblin mocked, not noticing that May and Caitlin slipped into the fabricator room. "Did you really think that I'd let that happen? That I'd just take away my power, just because you're blind to what true power can bring you?"
"You don't know me." Peter responded.
"Don't I?
Back in the Fabricator room, May was grabbing the cures and putting them in a tote bag, while Caitlin corked the "cure" Goblin gave her and took a nearby flash drive and put it in a USB port.
"What are you doing?" May whispered to caitlin.
"Backing up the data, there's a chance Goblin did something to the cures. This will help just in case." She whispered back, then putting the flash drive with data and the cure she was given into the tote bag, then sneaking back into the room, hoping Goblin didn't notice.
"I saw how she trapped you, fighting her holy moral mission. We don't need you to save us. We don't need to be fixed!" The Goblin said before turning to Flint and Max. Max's device continued to beep and light up. "These are not curses, they're gifts."
"Norman, no!" Otto pleaded.
"Quiet, lap dog!"
I guess Otto's cure did work. Perhaps Norman only turned after we fixed Otto. Goblin may have taken over to survive. Caitlin thought.
"You don't know what you're talking about." Peter told him.
"I've watched you from deep behind Norman's cowardly eyes, struggling to have everything you want, while the world tries to make you choose. Gods don't have to choose, we take." Goblin responded.
"May, Caitlin, run!"
May and Caitlin start to run out of the room. However, Norman shoots at them with a small tranq like dart from under his free sleeve. Around the same time, Max had pulled the device off and then used his powers to have his electricity to pull the arc reactor from the fabricator towards himself and Peter had to dodge it, just as Goblin fired at Caitlin and May. In the hallway outside of the apartment, Caitlin falls to the ground after exiting the apartment.
"Shit!" She exclaims.
"What is it?" May asks, bending down to check on her. Caitlin then tries to sit against the wall and then pulls out the "tranq." "What's that?"
"Well, knowing the Green Goblin, it's either poison or-" Before she can continue, she screams in pain and closes her eyes. When she opens them, they're now ice blue. Her hair was slowly starting to turn white. "Or it'll turn me back into Killer Frost. The so-called "cure" he gave me probably would have done the same, if Peter hadn't stopped me. The dart may have been his back up plan. Go, get out of here and get the cures and flash drive to Peter and Otto! Frost may try to stop you, so run, May, RUN!"
May then heads for the Elevator, but the lights start to blink, thanks to Max. So she heads for the stairs. Caitlin's hair starts to turn completely white, her skin pale, and her lips blue. Killer Frost is back! She heads towards the stairs and looks down at May trying to run to the lobby. She doesn't want to waste her energy. She heads to the elevator and puts her hands on the doors, freezing them and then causing them to break apart. She then heads down the elevator shaft, using her Ice Slide ability to get to the lobby floor.
Once there, she repeats what she did to the previous elevator doors and then walks into the lobby. She manages to see that outside, the police are being affected by the end of a sandstorm and flashes of yellow, which she assumes is Flint and Max making their escape. She also sees the Lizard escape from the F.E.A.S.T truck. She decides to stay in the lobby and wait for May, cut off her exit and stop her with ease from trying to go back and look for another exit. But just as May does arrive, Peter and Goblin crash into the lobby from the ceiling, the rubble of which knocks Frost out. May decides to grab the cure for the Goblin from out of the tote bag.
"Your weakness, Peter, is morality." Goblin said, while on top of Peter, his hand at Peter's throat. "It's choking you, can't you feel it?"
As the goblin squeezes his grip on Peter, May rushes towards and jams his cure into the back of his neck. He cries out and stands up, to face May and takes the cure canister out and throws it away. Peter tries to get up.
"It didn't work." The Goblin tells May. "Norman was right. He got it from you, that pathetic sickness!"
He then stomps on Peter's back, forcing Peter back down. He then pulls Peter up from his hair. May grabs a bar or pipe from the ceiling rubble to use as a weapon.
"You tried to fix me," He tells Peter.
"Go, May." Peter tells May in his weakened state, but she holds her "weapon" to defend herself.
"Now, I'm gonna fix you."
"May, run, please."
But May stands her ground, ready to save her nephew if necessary. But, just then, the Goblin's glider crashes into the lobby through the glass doors and windows. The glider slams into May.
"MAY!" Peter yells.
The glider shoots out a pumpkin bomb for Goblin to catch and circles the lobby, before stopping by the entrance so that Goblin can jump on and manually drive it.
"Peter, Peter, Peter," Goblin taunted. "No good deed goes unpunished, you can thank me and Caitlin for the idea later."
He tells him before turning his sights towards May. He activates the pumpkin bomb and throws it towards May with glee as he escapes. Peter tries to jump to catch the bomb. But it's too late, it explodes near him and May. Outside, more explosions are heard as the Goblin causes chaos for the NYPD as he escapes. The 2 Parkers start to slowly get up, in pain, trying to find each other in the now mess of a lobby. Killer Frost starts to wake up too, she's still too weak to get up and fight them, but she does hear their conversation.
"May?" Peter asked.
"Peter," she responded.
"May, May, I'm over here."
She coughs and he winces in pain as they make their way to each other and embrace in a hug. Both breathing heavily from all the dust in the air from the rubble.
"May, May, I'm here. Are you okay?"
"Uh-huh, uh-huh. What happened?"
As they end her hug, she nearly keels over.
"It's okay. We're okay, right?" He asks.
"Yeah. Knocked on my ass," She shrugs off.
"Yeah, me too."
"That's all."
Peter winces again, "I think I broke my ribs."
The two then look towards the destroyed lobby and police cars outside.
"This is all my fault, May." Peter said.
This Spider's got just as much of a guilt complex as my Spider. Frost thought.
"No," May reassured him.
"I should've just listened to Strange and let him send them-"
"You did the right thing," She reassured him in a more serious tone, proud of her boy. "They would have been killed. You did the right thing."
"It's not my responsibility, May."
"Oh, what Norman said? "My moral mission?" No."
"No, May-" Peter says, trying to take the blame.
"Peter, you listen to me! You have a gift. You have power. And with great power, there must also come great responsibility. Mm?"
"Yeah, I know."
"Let's get the…out of here"
"Okay, let's go"
Frost tries to summon the strength to get up, to try and stop them (also annoyed to hear this universe's version of the "great power" speech). But after the two take a few steps.
"Let me just…catch my…" May says before she keels over. Peter kneels to help her. Frost notices a SWAT team is starting to make their way towards the building.
"What happened? Are you okay?" Peter asks May.
"I'm okay." She responds, softly.
"Yeah, you're okay, what happened?"
She breathes more heavily and responds, "Just have to…catch my breath."
"Okay, well, catch your breath. I'm right here. We're gonna take our time. You catch your breath and then we'll…uh, take you to a doctor, okay?"
Peter then puts his hand on her stomach, pulling it back to discover blood on his hand. Peter then looks at May with tears in his eyes. Part of him knows that May might die tonight. He hears sirens outside.
"Are you okay?" She asks.
Peter then turns to the lobby entrance, hoping someone can help him, hoping the sirens are ambulances that can help.
"Somebody help! I need an ambulance, please! Somebody?" He pleads.
"What happened?"
"Nothing happened," He reassures her, cupping her face. "You're okay, you're okay."
She nods and then responds, weakly, "Let me just-let me just catch my breath."
He nods in agreement with more tears in his eyes.
"I'm right here. I'm right here. I'm right here. You're okay. It's just me and you." He says to reassure her as he strokes her hair. But soon, he notices that she isn't breathing and hasn't responded. "May?" He asks. "May?" He asks again, hoping for a response. "Will you look at me, May? Please?" Still in the first stage of grief; denial. "May?...May?" He shakes her, hoping she'll wake up. "What are you doing, May? Please, please, will you just wake up and talk to me? Please?"
It's then that a car parks just in front of the entrance, the driver grabs Peter's attention. Frost sees that Peter and this guy knew each other as they share a look of despair. Perhaps he was the owner of the apartment she escaped from. The SWAT team force the man to exit the car and surrender and be arrested for obstruction.
"Peter, run!" The man shouts.
Peter turns back to May and continues to reassure her in a whisper as the man still tells him to flee. "It's just me and you, ok. It's just you and me, ok?"
He's not just reassuring her, he's stating a fact. Like my Peter, she's the only family he has. Now he's an orphan and that's a world he doesn't want to face. Frost thought.
But he finally accepts it and kisses her forehead. "Oh, May, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I'm so, so, so sorry. I love you."
The police order him to surrender. After ignoring them for long enough, they start to open fire. He soon leaves with the cures from another exit. Frost tries to follow him, but the police fire on her too, but she creates a wall of ice to shield her. By the time she makes it to the exit, he's nowhere in sight. She decides to try her luck, fleeing into the streets of New York. After several minutes, it began to rain. She makes her way to the rooftop of a building, rather than seeking shelter from the rain. The cold never bothered her, anyway. From there she sees a Daily Bugle report on a screen on a nearby building.
"Tragedy," J. Jonah Jameson reported. "What else can I call it? What more need be said? The damage, the destruction. You saw it with your own eyes. When will people wake up and realize that everywhere Spider-Man goes, chaos and calamity ensue? Everything Spider-Man touches comes to ruin and we, the innocents, are left to pick up the pieces. J. Jonah Jameson reporting. Good night, and god help us all."
As the report ends, Frost feels a little bad. She knew Jameson used to bash Peter in his youth, but the people of Central City started to see him as the hero he is, especially after he partnered with Barry. She was confused as to why she is feeling bad. She's supposed to feel cold, detached. She's not supposed to feel anything, right? But then she remembers, the only way for her to remain as Killer Frost is to kill Caitlin's boyfriend, Peter Parker. Unless she can get back to Earth-1 without getting cured by teen Peter or killed by Doctor Strange. She then remembered that this world's Peter's friends had the box thing that could return her home. She decided to search the city for them.
Somewhere across the city, a Spider-man in a red and black suit saw the same report. He felt bad for this world's Peter. He couldn't imagine what he'd do without his Aunt May. But most of all, he saw in the report versions of his enemies and Frost. He had to find her. She may be the only person he was familiar with. He started fiddling with the ring under his left, gloved ring finger. Peter had to get back to his Earth and with his wives.
I know NWH isn't everyone's favorite of the Spider-Man films. But I forgot just how heartbreakingly good May's death was. Props to Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei's acting.
Next time: We start to get more of the other Peters.
