Elena went to see Stefan the next morning. She wanted to get the conversation over with. Luckily, it was the weekend, so she didn't have to go to school. She had also called Bonnie and Caroline to meet her at the boarding house. She didn't want to have this conversation more than once.
When she got to the boarding house, Elena let herself in. She knew Stefan and Damon wouldn't mind. She immediately went down to the living room. Bonnie and Caroline were already there talking with Stefan and Damon.
"So, this vampire has convinced Elena he's her father?" Bonnie was asking.
"I see you've started the conversation without me. Thanks, Stefan," Elena said sarcastically as she made her presence known.
Stefan turned to his girlfriend. "Elena, I'm sorry. I've just been worried about you."
"We all are, Elena. Why do you think this guy is your father?" Bonnie asked.
"Because he is, Bonnie," Elena said.
"So a complete stranger says. You know, you may not want to believe everything some dude off the street says," Damon said a bit condescendingly.
"Okay, guys, let's let Elena tell us what's going on," Caroline suggested.
"Thank you, Caroline," Elena said before joining her and Bonnie on the couch. Stefan sat on the arm of the couch right next to her, while Damon was sitting in a chair across from them. "I guess I should start with when I was kidnapped."
"I thought you were compelled not to talk about," Bonnie said.
"I was. Elijah released me from the compulsion the other night," Elena said.
"So, obviously he was the one who compelled you. Yeah, there's evidence that this dude can be trusted," Damon said sarcastically.
"I think he did it to protect me, and because he didn't trust me at the time. Anyway, I can talk about it now," Elena said before explaining the circumstances behind her kidnapping her. She told them how Rose and Trevor planned to broker a deal with Klaus for their freedom, and how Klaus needed to sacrifice a doppelganger to end the sun and moon curse.
"Wait, so the most legendary vampire in history, who may or may not exist, wants to sacrifice you! You should've told us right away!" Damon snapped. He'd heard the stories regarding Klaus. There were very few vampires that hadn't, and that was mainly vampires under a hundred.
"I guess you forgot the part about me being compelled," Elena said with a roll of her eyes.
"Elena, you haven't been compelled for the last couple of days," Stefan pointed out.
"It didn't matter anymore. Rose and Trevor were wrong. I'm not a doppelganger," Elena said.
"Of course, you are. You're the spitting image of Katherine," Damon said.
Elena flinched a little. The last thing she wanted to be reminded of right now was her resemblance to her so-called mother. "Not because I'm a doppelganger."
"Go on, Elena. Tell us the rest of your story," Caroline urged gently. Whatever happened, she knew it had been hard for her friend to deal with, which meant it was hard for her to discuss now.
"When Elijah showed up, he knew almost immediately after seeing me that I wasn't a doppelganger. He sensed me and he sensed that I wasn't what I appeared to be. He could sense that there was a large part of me that was not human," Elena told them.
"That's crazy," Bonnie said.
Elena couldn't help but laugh. "That's actually the least crazy part of this story. Obviously, I was taken aback. I had no idea what was happening."
What was happening was that this dude was playing, and apparently, you fell for it," Damon said.
"Playing me to what purpose. He was there for the Petrova doppelganger. He wanted to turn me over to Klaus. The fact that I wasn't what I appeared to be was really inconvenient for him. Anyway, that's when you two showed up, so he compelled me not to say anything. He came back the other day and took me to see a witch," Elena explained.
"And you just went with him?" Stefan asked incredulously.
"Yes, because he was the only one who could help me get the answers I needed. Plus, I knew he wouldn't hurt me," Elena said.
"How could you possibly have known that?" Bonnie asked.
"I just did. I don't have an explanation for it. It's just something that I felt. I wasn't afraid of him, even when I thought he was going to turn me over to be sacrificed. Anyway, the witch confirmed Elijah's suspicions that I wasn't human. He could sense it just by touching me," she said.
"How come I've never sensed it then? I've touched you more times than I can count, and I've never sensed anything off," Bonnie said. She could sense supernatural creatures, like vampires. She noticed something about him the first time she touched him. It would be the same with Elena if she weren't human.
"My guess is because you're new to magic. This witch came off as very strong. Plus, he was looking for something inhuman in me. You never have. The fact is that some of me is human, so it's probably harder to sense. You could try again now. I don't know if it would work, but you could try," Elena said. That might be the only way she could get her friends to stop assuming she was crazy. It would make explaining the rest of the story much easier.
Bonnie nodded before getting up. She kneeled in front of Elena and took her hand. She concentrated hard on trying to find something inside of her friend that wasn't human. She sat like that for a good five minutes before letting go of her friend's hand and standing up. She then just stared at Elena for a few moments.
"Well? You obviously noticed something. Spill," Damon demanded.
"I'm not exactly sure what I was sensing, but there is something different. I think I was sensing magic, but I'm not positive. I've never sensed anything like that before," Bonnie said in disbelief.
"You were sensing magic. I'm part witch. I'm also part vampire," Elena told her.
There was a collection of gasps and a moment of shocked silence. Finally, Stefan spoke. "Elena, that's not even possible."
"Yeah, he's right. My grams told me that vampires can't be witches. They lose their magic when they transition because vampirism goes against nature," Bonnie said.
"But I didn't transition. I was born this way," Elena declared.
"No one is born a vampire. Vampires can't procreate," Damon said.
"Apparently, they can when magic is involved. It was some kind of fertility spell that my biological mother used to trap Elijah with a child. She didn't know he was a vampire when she did it," Elena said.
'Do you just believe everything this dude tells you? This is ridiculous," Damon said.
"Elijah didn't tell me anything of this. Katherine did," Elena answered.
Damon laughed. "Oh, yeah, because her word is much more reliable?"
"You went to see Katherine? Why would you do that? And how would she even know any of this?" Stefan asked.
Elena took a deep breath, knowing this was going to shock everyone more than anything else had thus far. "Because she was my mother.
There were stunned looks throughout the room. No one spoke for several minutes. Finally, Damon, who looked almost green, spoke again. "I think I'm going to throw up. I need a drink. No, I need a lot of drinks."
"No. This can't possibly be true. Elena, Katherine is a liar. You know that. You can't believe what she tells you," Stefan said.
Elena shook her head. "She couldn't lie. Elijah compelled her to tell the truth."
"Wait, vampires can't compel other vampires, can they?" Caroline asked.
"Elijah can, and even if he hadn't, telling us what she did, didn't help her. He killed her for it," Elena said.
Stefan and Damon both looked stunned to find out that a woman they both had a relationship was now dead. Damon was more annoyed that he wasn't the one to do it.
"And you still think he isn't dangerous?" Bonnie asked incredulously.
"He killed her because she admitted to trying to have me killed in infancy," Elena said. She then went on to tell the rest of the story of her birth, and how she ended up five hundred years into the future.
"Time travel? Witches can do that?" Caroline asked. She directed the question to Bonnie, as she was the only witch in the room. Well, other than apparently Elena.
"I've never heard of it, but I guess it could be possible. I think almost anything is possible with witchcraft. This whole thing is seriously crazy though," Bonnie said in disbelief.
"But it's true," Elena said.
Bonnie wanted to deny that it was, but she'd sensed parts of Elena that were more than human. It was hard to deny what she was saying after that. "What does this guy want from you?"
"He wants me in his life. He wants me to go live with him," Elena told her.
"That's not going to happen! You're not going near this dude again," Damon said firmly.
"He's right. We won't let him near you again," Bonnie assured her.
"Guys, stop!" Caroline said in slightly raised tone before turning to Elena and taking her hand. "What do you think, Elena. How are you feeling about all of this?"
"I'm still reeling from most of it. That's why I didn't tell you guys right away. It was too much. My own mother wanted me dead. She hated me. I hated her too, but it's different," Elena said.
Caroline nodded in understanding.
"I have a father who is the opposite. He cares about me. He wants me in his life," Elena said.
"How do you feel about that? Do you want him in your life?" Caroline asked.
Elena took a breath. "When I thought John was my father, I wasn't happy. I didn't want anything to do with him. I never liked him. Something about him always rubbed me the wrong way, and that decision was only solidified when he tried to kill Stefan and all the vampires in town. Plus, I had a father I loved. The last part is still true, but Elijah is different than John. Yes, I want a relationship with him. I think I need to have a relationship with him. I don't want to live with him though."
Caroline nodded again. "That all makes sense. That all makes sense. It's natural that you'd want to know him, and that you wouldn't want to leave your home. Maybe there's a middle ground."
"There's no middle ground here! This guy isn't touching her!" Damon snapped.
"Shut up! This has nothing to do with you!" Caroline yelled back.
"I tried, Care. Elijah won't budge. He said that I can see my family and friends whenever I want, but that I have to live with him. He's worried about my safety," Elena said.
"Well, that's understandable. It sounds like he's trying to make this easier for you at least," Caroline said.
"Caroline, how can you say that? This vampire wants to take her away. We can't let that happen," Bonnie said.
"Bonnie, he's her father, and she wants a relationship with him. No, making her live with him isn't ideal, but it wouldn't be the first time a parent made a choice that their kid didn't like," Caroline said.
"Caroline, he's a vampire," Bonnie emphasized.
"So am I, Bonnie. So is every other being in this room besides you. Is that how you really feel about all of us? Are we all to be judged as evil because we have vampire in us? If that's the case, what makes you any better than Katherine? She wanted to murder me because of what I was," Elena said.
"That's not what I'm saying, Elena. But you don't know this guy. You don't know that you can trust him," she said.
"Yes, I do. I have a connection to him that I can't explain. I know that I can trust Elijah. I may not like him very much at the moment for wanting to take me from my home, but I know he cares about me. I know he would never hurt me," Elena said firmly.
"Elena, don't be stupid. You can't trust him. You're not getting near him again," Damon said.
Before Elena had a chance to explain, her phone rang. She took it out and saw that it was Jeremy. She immediately answered. "Hey, Jer. I'm in the middle of something right now."
"Yeah, I know you're telling Stefan everything. I'm sorry, but I thought you should know this right away. John just showed up," Jeremy told her.
"What? Why is he there?" Elena asked in surprise.
"Not sure, but I'm guessing Jenna called him," Jeremy said.
"Alright, I'm on my way," Elena said before hanging up.
"Why would Jenna call John?" Stefan asked. He'd of course heard the entire conversation, including Jeremy's side, as had every other vampire in the room.
"Elijah gave Jenna a human version of what happened. He told her Katherine had abandoned me to Isobel, who had given me up. She also knows John signed the adoption papers, so she probably wants an explanation as to why he would do that. I have to get over there," Elena said before getting up.
"I'll go with you," Stefan said. He wanted to hear what John had to say too. He still wasn't a hundred percent convinced this was true yet. He really did not want to believe that Katherine was Elena's mother. That kind of creeped him out a little.
"Fine," Elena said. She didn't feel like arguing with him, and she wanted to leave now.
Stefan led her out of the room and they headed out of the house.
