"Alright, my wife will have a good meal ready for us when we get back to the house, but what do you say we get a snack for the flight?" Jed asked.
"I'm not very hungry," Maya told him.
He nodded. "That's fine, but I'm starving, missed lunch jumping on the flight here."
Maya blushed, "I'm sorry, sir."
"Please Grandpa J or just Jed." He said again.
"Okay, Jed." Maya tried out.
Jed let out a hearty laugh, and pulled the girl close, "Good Girl." They walked up to a pizzeria that was selling by the slice. "We don't normally eat this junk, so you should probably grab a slice, even if you aren't hungry. It will be home cooking from here on out."
"Aunt Topanga likes us to eat home cooked meals too." Maya said smiling.
Jed laughed as they stepped up to the counter, "I must have done something right." He turned to smile at the last behind the counter, "Two slices of supreme for me and…"
"A slice of cheese, please." Maya said softly.
"Atta girl." Jed said, patting her on the back, before reaching into his wallet to pull out some cash.
They took their pizza and walked to the gate to wait. "Am I going to be like doing lots of chores?"
"Chores?" Jed asked, taking a bite of his pizza.
"You said you live on a ranch. Are they sending away to be worked to death?" Maya asked.
"Ah, we can talk about that tonight over dinner. Why don't you tell me a little about you?"
Maya shrugged, "I'm 13, there isn't much to tell."
"Topanga said you play soccer and volleyball, do you like them?"
"I do now, yes sir."
"Jed."
"Jed." Maya repeated. "She said that?"
"Yes, and that you are a pretty good student now, and a very good best friend."
Maya blushed, "That seems like a exaggeration."
"Ah, okay." He said nodding. Soon it was time to board and Maya excitedly watched out the window as the plane took off. When they got in the air Jed told her that she could either rest or start working on some of her work. She pulled out her folder and had completed all of her math and science worksheets by the time they were landing. Jed had looked over and approved each one as she finished.
They went to bag check and got her bag and then walked out in the cold night air to Jed's truck. He held the door open for her and she climbed up. "Its about an hour and a half drive. Do you mind if I put the radio on?"
It was already almost 8 and Maya was starting to get a little sleepy. She was glad she had eaten the pizza after all. "That's fine."
The next thing Maya knew she was being gently shaken, "Maya…we're here honey."
She nodded and stumbled as she jumped from the truck. He grabbed both of her bags and walked with her up to a huge house. When they walked into the home a little boy rushed up to them, "Is she here?!"
"Whoa, let us come through the door." Jed laughed.
"Sorry Grandpa!" The little boy cried. He quickly climbed into the man's arms and Jed tossed him in the air, making his blond curls wave.
"Why are you still awake, Cove?"
"He promised to wake up without a fuss tomorrow if I let him stay up for you." A lady said coming in. Jed smiled at the woman and pulled her in for a hug. "Hey guys this is Maya. Maya this is Grams or Amy, and this little guy…" He started to tickle Cove. "Is Cove."
Amy reached out and hugged the girl. "Hi Honey. I'm glad you are home, Cory and Topanga have called four times."
"They have?" Maya asked surprised.
"Yes, I said you would call when you got here." Amy told her. "Why don't you call while I get you both some dinner." They walked into the kitchen and Amy directed her towards a phone on the wall. It had a piece of paper with a number on it. She assumed Topangas.
"How'd it go today?" Jed asked, setting Cove down in a chair.
"Silas got in trouble!" Cove said excitedly.
Amy glared at the young boy, and waved the wooden spoon she had been using to stir the soup at the boy. "That isn't your business Cove James Lawrence."
"Go up and get yourself into bed, before you get in trouble." Jed directed. Standing the boy up and giving him a medium swat. "I will be up soon to say goodnight. Tell Wilder to start getting ready for bed, and Silas to come here please."
"Yes Sir." He started to head out of the kitchen.
"Hold it." The little boy halted and turned around. "Do you need to tell Grams something?"
Cove looked wearily at the woman before walking over to her. "I'm sorry Grams."
She bent down and hugged the boy. "I forgive you. You won't be able to stay up late though, if it's going to make you forget your manners."
"Yes ma'am." He said sheepishly.
She kissed his cheek. "Good Boy, up to bed." He turned and ran out of the kitchen.
"Hello…Dad?" Topanga asked.
"No ma'am, it's me." Maya said softly.
"Maya," She could hear the relief in her voice. "How are you my warrior?"
"I'm good. Tired."
"Are you okay?" Topanga asked.
"Do you need us to come get you?" Cory asked in the background.
"No sir, I'm fine." Maya said softly, the day catching up to her.
Jed came over and took the phone, "Go eat, honey." Maya walked over to the kitchen island where Amy had just sat down two bowls of soup and some cornbread. She sat down at one of the bowls and started picking at her food.
Jed came back over and sat down. "Dig in Maya, this is a clear your plate household."
Maya blushed and looked down at the bowl. She was too tired to fight it though, so she started digging in.
"What happened with Silas today?" Jed asked, digging in after Maya had started eating.
"Just teenage boy stuff…" Amy said.
"The same teenage boy stuff that is keeping him from obeying my order?" Jed asked.
Amy's eyes drifted to Maya. "Change is hard."
Jed shook his head and walked out of the kitchen. "Silas!" He called from another room before walking back into the kitchen.
A minute later a taller boy walked into the kitchen. He walked over to the kitchen island, and stood next to Amy, across from Jed.
"First take your hood off when I'm talking to you." Jed directed. Silas lowered the hood on his sweatshirt. She noticed it had cassettes with different album titles from the smiths. "Did your brother tell you that I wanted to talk to you?"
"Yes Sir." Silas said.
"Did you think that was a suggestion?"
"No Sir."
"Then why didn't you come downstairs?" Jed asked, exasperated.
"I didn't really want to get told off in front of our guest." Silas said moodily.
"The way your headed, you're gonna get the belt in front of our guest. So stand up straight, and answer me properly." Jed growled.
"Yes Sir." The boy said straightening.
"What happened today?"
Silas blushed slightly. "I was just upset about having to share my room this week." Silas said, shrugging.
"Excuse me?" Jed said.
"Its not fair that Wilder can't share his room with Cove this week." Silas said, heat coming into his tone.
"We've been over this: Auggie is going to stay in Cove's room this weekend and it doesn't make sense to make Wilder sleep in two different rooms this week." Jed said. "So what were you doing while you were upset about this injustice?"
Silas blushed and looked down. "I was just a little upset is all."
"And?"
"And when Grams told me to do my chores, I didn't listen."
"Did they get done, Silas?"
"No Sir."
"Alright, go get me your phone, and your golf cart keys. You need to get both days of chores done tomorrow before you do anything else. Your phone, and golf cart are mine for the week. You need to make sure you are taking care of your horse, but no riding this week either."
"How will I get around the ranch?" Silas asked annoyed.
"I guess you will run." Jed said. "Take that tone with me again, and we can take a trip to my office before bed."
"No Sir. I'm sorry." Silas said, sounding anything but.
"Eat." Jed told her. Silas left the room. Maya finished her soup and stood to put her bowl in the sink.
Amy hugged her. "I'm going to bring Maya up to her room." Amy walked back out the foyer, handed Maya her backpack, and picked up her duffle before walking up the large staircase. She went down the hall to a bedroom with a 'W' on the door. "Here is your room." She opened the door and was greeted by a neat room with a desk, dresser and a king size bed. The room had a deep blue and gold wallpaper on top of dark wainscoting. The walls were covered in North Carolina University Basketball posters. "This is Wilder's room. That door there is a bathroom, and the towels on the rack are clean. Our bedroom is down at then other end of the hall if you need us. Cove's room is next-door, and Silas and Wilder will be across the hall." Amy told him.
Maya watched Silas and Jed come into view together. Jed gave the boy a hug before he went into his room and then Jed walked into her room. "All settled?"
"Yes Jed."
"Alright. Best be getting to bed, it's going on eleven. That alarm," he said pointing to the clock by her bed, " Will go off at 6. I need you dressed and in the kitchen by 615."
"Ouch." Maya said.
"It is a little early." Jed laughed.
"For farm chores?" She asked.
"No, but we're going to go on a run. Then we will come home grab some breakfast, the boys will do homeschool with Amy, you will work on your school work, and then get a few chores done before lunch." Jed said.
"That's like a whole day before lunch." Maya said nervously.
"We are busy here." Jed agreed.
"More chores after lunch?"
"That depends. If you get your work and chores done, eat all of your food, and follow the rules, then you will go to a soccer camp for the afternoon, then you will have free time to do whatever you need to from four thirty until dinner at 7. Then family time after dinner."
"What time is bed time?" Maya asked.
"We will come around to say goodnight around 930, but you don't have to go to bed until you want to." Jed told her.
"What?! No bed time?" Maya asked.
"If you can get up on time, and not sass mouth is, then you don't need a bed time." Jed told her.
"Goodnight Honey." Amy said kissing her forehead.
"Goodnight." Maya said.
"Goodnight." Jed said, hugging her.
Jed and Amy left and Maya fell back into the bed a moment. She jumped up and went to go brush her teeth before falling back into bed to fall asleep.
