Chapter 51: The Wedding
SCENE: ALEX AND JO'S BACKYARD
(Andrew and the guests quiet as Turning Page by Sleeping At Last plays indicating the ceremony is about to begin. Alexis walks down the aisle first in her white floral dress spreading red petals as she walks with grace. Eli follows after in a suit carrying the rings and sits next to Alexis and Izzie at the front of the aisle. Next Levi walks down the aisle as the maid of honor and takes his post on the bride's side. The guests stand as Amber exits the house with Alex as they pause on the front porch for a moment. Andrew grins at the sight of her as well as Jo. Amber smiles at Andrew as she walks)
Link: (Smiles) You are a lucky man DeLuca.
Andrew: I know.
(Alex walks Amber down the aisle with the guests smiling and looking at her)
Alex: (Whispers to Amber) I'd tell you I'll kick his ass if he hurts but I think you've got that covered for the both of us.
Amber: (Chuckles) I think he knows that too.
(Alex and Amber reach the arch where Alex shakes Andrew's hand out of respect)
Alex: Take care of her.
Andrew: Always.
(Amber looks at Jo in the minster's place in confusion but shakes it off as she hands the bouquet to Levi and stands in front of Andrew holding hands with him. Jo clears her throat and starts)
Jo: Um okay everybody can sit now. (The guests sit) Dearly beloved we are gathered here today for the long overdue wedding of Andrea Vincenzo DeLuca and Amber Stevie Karev. Now I know what-
Amber: Um Jo we wanted to say a few words before you started the speech.
Jo: (Wide eyes) Really? Nobody told me that.
Amber: Well, nobody told us you were the minister.
Jo: Good point okay these two would like to say a few words before getting started go ahead.
(Andrew and Amber face the crowd)
Amber: Andrew and I wanted to take a moment to remember some people that are missing here today. It's been exactly a year and three days since the pandemic started and we have lost the people we've worked with for a very long time to covid 19. So, we want to dedicate this moment to them and their memory.
(The crowd takes a moment of silence of respect)
Andrew: (Nods solemnly) Greg in the nursing department.
Amber: Dr. Klein from the ER. Greta who stocked the medical supplies in the ICU rooms. Paul the janitor and Ruth the ruthless nurse who gave us all a kick in the ass when we needed it. Actually, she ate lunch with Paul almost everyday until his death a month later. I think those two were an item.
Andrew: We've all been through a lot this year and we've had to adjust to a world we don't recognize anymore. We all hope there's gonna come a day we get back some normalcy but we're gonna carry this year even after that. It's why we decided to get married today to replace a day when we felt the world was gonna end with a day to remind us that even in the darkest of times there's still joy and love and we gotta celebrate that when we can. So, let's celebrate, Eli the rings.
(Eli comes up and hands them both the rings with Amber grinning and winking at him as he sits back down. They get back in place and Jo takes a deep breath before continuing)
Jo: It's amazing that a random person can marry a couple in as little as ten seconds but when it comes to these two it's just what you expect. (They laugh) I've known Amber for a long time now and if you told me four years ago that she was gonna stand right here in her brother's backyard in a pandemic and marry Andrew DeLuca with me making it official…I would think you were crazy. (Amber and Andrew chuckle) But seeing these two throughout the years I would think it was crazy it took them so long to get here. You've both been through so much, you've had to endure more pain in the last four years than most married couples go through in one lifetime. All of that normally breaks a couple but not this one, not by a long shot. You two have this love and connection that conquers everything life has thrown at you and as someone who's been through that too I can honestly say it makes it all worth it. Don't get me wrong there's gonna be hard days to come and difficult things to overcome but I know you two will make it through that like me and Alex have because…you two are partners in every way possible. And you trust your partner to be there to lift you up and carry you through the storm.
(The couple look at each other lovingly)
Jo: Was that a good speech?
Link: I thought it was great.
Jo: (Exhales in relief) Okay well lucky for me these two have decided to write their own vows. Go ahead.
(Andrew inhales and exhales as he prepares to speak)
Andrew: You know I worked really hard on these vows and I'm hoping these will get you to cry not out of some sick satisfaction but that my words will be enough to move you and show you how much I want this with you so here we go. (Pulls out flashcards) I looked up how to write your own vows and they listed about five things, say I love you, explain that you'll be there no matter what, share a personal story, make promises to each other and acknowledge that you'll need outside support. I tried to make this as sweet as I could but also short so our guests don't get bored and leave so bear with me. (The guests chuckle) I'm gonna tell you and everyone the moment I started to fall in love with you. I still remember that day, it was Halloween almost three years ago and we had our actual first kiss. I say actual because our kisses before that were when you were upset or when I was drunk and you rightfully slapped me right after. (Amber laughs at the memory) Anyway you were telling me how you were having dreams about me and wanting me and…it scared the living crap out of me for reasons I think everybody here knows. You said we should kiss for real so we can see if there was something beyond lust and…I thought it was crazy but I figured it's just one kiss. Before that night I didn't think much of you as much and to put it kindly I thought you were just another irritating, know it all intern. (Amber chuckles with Andrew) But all that changed when we kissed and…I was a goner. It took a while to realize but I knew in that moment that you and I were innegabile, we were undeniable. I was in a dark place just like you, I didn't think I could know what love, what true love really is but then you walked in and brought light into my life. You're not a dark person Amber, I know you've convinced yourself of that or let others convince you but I'm here to say that's not true at all. You've been through dark things that life has given you and you have survived it with your perseverance, your wit, your intelligence and your kindness. You have given me your strength during the darkest time of my life in spite of me trying to hurt you and push you away. You've literally brought me back from the brink of insanity and…that alone amazes me every day. You find some new way to amaze me every day. You've managed to survive what life has thrown at you on your own and I'm here to tell you that you're not on your own from now on.
(Andrew slips the wedding ring on her finger. Amber grins as she feels tears in her eyes as he continues)
Andrew: I'm here today to tell you and all of our friends and family what I promise from now on. I promise to stand by your side in sickness and in health. I promise to be the person to mend your pain and most of all I promise to spend every day trying to deserve you and being the husband, you deserve. Because let me tell you that you deserve so much more than what you've been given. Amber Stevie Karev…I love you; I am in love with you, you're the love of my life. And I take you to be my wife.
(Andrew finishes and Amber feels a single tear down her cheek as she smiles at Andrew before starting her vows)
Amber: (Inhales and exhales) I also googled how to write my own vows in fact I think we used the same site because I also used that list. (Andrew grins amused) I could stand here and tell you that I've loved you since our first kiss too…but that would be a big fat lie. (Andrew and the guests chuckle) You know me better than most people so you know how closed off I can be and why. Growing up I used to think that depending on people meant weakness. I have depended on people before and all of them have disappointed and hurt me in every way you could think of. All of that convinced me I had to take care of me and me alone. I never believed I could belong anywhere. I could never let my guard down for even a second. It's why I was so guarded when we first started dating. But despite all of that, despite me trying to push you away and letting my insecurities and fear get the better of me, you slowly broke my walls I have tried so hard to keep up. You have made me feel safe enough to be vulnerable with your kindness, your willingness to understand me and your enormous capacity to love. I didn't realize I was in love with you until the massive fog came. I was scared after you told me you loved me and I had to know why someone as good as you could love someone as broken as me. I woke you up and I asked you why you loved me and like some romantic idiot from those movies I always made fun of you told me 10 reasons why you fell in love with me. You fell in love with me knowing the odds, you even love the parts of me I don't love about myself and it scared me…but it also made me feel safe to tell you all the reasons I fell in love with you. (Andrew looks at her lovingly) I forgot to add one that day, I forgot to tell you one more reason why I fell in love with you. It was you showing me how to trust again.
(Helen audibly sobs at that part of the speech with Amber looking at her amused)
Helen: (Sniffles) I'm sorry, I'm sorry keep going.
Amber: (Chuckles and continues) You showed me how to trust again and that is what I promise today in front of everyone. I promise to trust you with my heart till death comes for us when we're old but still really good looking as a couple. (Andrew laughs along with the guests) I promise to stand by your side as your equal at home or at work. But I'm not gonna promise to obey you, you can forget that buddy.
(The guests laugh as well as Andrew)
Andrew: Yeah, I didn't have any hopes on that.
(Amber slides the platinum wedding band on Andrew's finger)
Amber: But I can promise that no matter what happens, no matter how scared or confused I was or will be my love for you will never be questioned. Because Andrea Vincenzo DeLuca I love you and not only do I want you in my life I need you in it for as long as we both shall live. (Andrew grins as his eyes tear up) And that's why from this day forward I take you as my husband and the love of my life.
(Andrew and Amber stand there looking at each other lovingly as the guests look on touched as well. Jo sniffles and wipes her tears away before speaking)
Jo: (Smiles) Okay it sounds like to me you two are in this for the long haul. So, by the power vested in me by a website my husband ordained me on without my permission I now pronounce you husband and wife, now kiss for God sakes we're all waiting.
(Amber and Andrew kiss for the first time as husband and wife as everyone around them claps and cheers out loud for them)
CUT TO BLACK
LATER
SCENE: ALEX AND JO'S BACKYARD
(The reception starts with the DJ playing Never Say Never by The Fray. Andrew and Amber walk around being congratulated by people when Helen, Aaron and Aaron's wife Emma approach them)
Amber: (Smiles) Hi mom, how are you feeling?
Helen: (Smiles) All the better knowing my baby is finally married. Excuse me.
(Helen lightly pulls Amber back to her surprise as she stands in front of Andrew with a smile on her face as he looks taken back)
Helen: Welcome to the family, son.
(Helen chuckles in delight as she hugs Andrew who grins and hugs her too. Helen pulls back)
Helen: I can call you that now, right?
Andrew: (Chuckles) Sure.
Helen: Oh I knew you two would end up together I even told your brother, didn't I honey?
Aaron: (Chuckles) Yeah it's all she said when Amber told us you proposed to her. (Shakes Andrew's hand) Congratulations.
Andrew: Thanks, we're really glad you guys could make it.
Aaron: Come on seeing my baby sister get hitched by my sister-in-law, I wouldn't miss that. Plus, it's the only real wedding in the Karev wedding, well apart from mine.
Emma: (Chuckles bitterly) Yeah trust me honey she's the only one in the family who had a traditional wedding.
Aaron: (Furrows eyebrows) What are you talking about? We had a wedding.
Emma: No getting married at city hall by some overweight judge and having beer after was not traditional.
(Amber purses her lips and stands next to Andrew as they look on amused)
Aaron: You know if it wasn't for Stevens these two would have the same thing right guys?
Amber: (Whispers to Andrew) Get me away please.
Andrew: (Clears throat) Um you know what I am going to steal the bride for a moment while you guys talk.
Helen: Oh yes of course honey it's your big day go and enjoy it.
Amber: Thanks.
(Andrew and Amber briskly walk away from the trio)
Amber: Those whack jobs are already your in-laws so if you're having second thoughts it's too late for you.
Andrew: (Chuckles) Don't worry I mean your not running from my crazy family so why should I run from yours?
Amber: (Touched) Aww you really do love me.
(Andrew grins at Amber and tenderly kisses her in the middle of the yard. Levi catches them and claps for them along with everybody else. They break apart and grin at the attention before moving on to the DeLuca's)
Vincenzo: (Smiles) Bambini you look beautiful as always though I expect nothing less from my new daughter.
Amber: (Smiles) Thank you suocero.
Carina: (Smiles) Hi can I give my new sister a hug?
Amber: (Chuckles) You can.
(Amber and Carina hug and pull apart)
Maya: Well congratulations I would hug you but I'm not the mushy type.
Amber: I completely understand, how about a handshake?
Maya: (Shakes her hand) Sounds good to me. So, is there gonna be a best man speech or maid of honor?
Amber: No, it's not gonna be one of those weddings, it's just drinking, dancing and going home with the gifts.
Maya: Yeah, the gifts are the best, even the blender.
Carina: (Chuckles) Well we hope you like our gift and the money we added in the piggy bank. I mean I didn't add much after all I was the one who tried to set them up all those years ago so I gave this idiota the kick he needed to ask her out.
Andrew: (Nods amused)
Amber: (Grins) I'm so happy right now I am not even gonna bring up how that backfired for all of us after I heard Andrew saying he would rather date garbage and you got me to feel pimped out.
Andrew: (Wide eyes) And yet somehow you did it, anyway, have we apologized for that I feel like we should.
Amber: Well don't because it was the start of a long and beautiful love story.
(Andrew grins and kisses Amber)
Amber: Besides you'll have the rest of our lives to make it up to me.
Andrew: (Chuckles) Yeah, I figured.
(Maya spots Ben Warren, Nick Evans and Travis Montgomery by the open bar)
Maya: I'm gonna go check out the free booze I'll see you guys in a bit.
(Maya goes to the open bar where only Nick is downing mineral water as the rest of them do shots)
Nick: Well, they finally did it, I say finally because Levi has been talking about it nonstop. The wedding is going great so far.
Travis: Yeah, I mean nobody got stabbed, had a heart attack, got trapped in a shed or got demoted.
(Warren stomps on Travis's foot who groans in pain but realizes his mistake after seeing Maya's fallen face at the mention of her demotion)
Travis: Oh crap I am so sorry Bishop, I was just-
Maya: (Composed) It's fine, the best part about weddings is the free booze give me a shot.
Nick: Take mine, I'm not drinking for obvious reasons.
(Maya gladly takes Nick's shot)
Nick: You know for what it's worth I can 'accidently' douse Sullivan with the high-pressure hose for getting us in this mess and forcing us to deal with Beckett…God I wish I could drink like a normal person.
Maya: Well thanks but I think Herrera is punishing him enough for the both of us. Look today is not about that, it's about your sister and my brother-in-law getting married.
Nick: (Sips water) Wait does that make us related somehow?
Warren: (Connects dots) Well she is your half-sister's husband's sister's wife so…I think so.
Nick: (Holds up water) Well cheers to us welcome to the family.
Maya: (Holds up shot) Same.
Warren: (Holds up shot) To Karev and DeLuca.
Travis: (Holds up shot) Cheers.
(They clink their glasses and drink)
Maya: So, I heard you finally found a new place.
Nick: Yeah, it's a one bedroom at Cherry Hill. It's small but I'm not taking up much space.
Warren: I'm surprised your moving out so soon.
Travis: Yeah, I mean this house is nice, it's spacious and rent free.
Nick: True but I'm a vigorous bi man working long hours dating a surgeon who works long hours and I want to spend the free time relaxing each other. I'm grateful for Alex and Jo but living next door to them and their three kids kills the vibe. Plus, his loft has no walls and a roommate so at some point one of us had to grow up and save this relationship.
Maya: Wow you make a lot of good points.
Nick: Thank you and now if you will excuse me, I have to hook up with the maid of honor. But first I'm seducing him with a dance.
(The DJ plays Perfect by Ed Sheeran as Nick walks toward Levi at the table and they both slow dance on the floor)
Levi: You know I knew they were meant to be before anyone else.
Nick: Yes, you mentioned that many times.
Levi: Sorry, I'm just so happy for her and him they both deserve this.
Nick: (Grins) Yeah, they do.
(Nick and Levi hold each other close as they dance with the other couples. Alex and Aaron observe Amber and Andrew at the main table with Andrew whispering to Amber who smiles)
Alex: Well she's his problem now.
Aaron: (Grins) Yeah I think married or not she's always gonna be our problem. She picked a good one though, thank God.
Alex: Yeah, she did, an unexpected one but still. (Looks at Amber nostalgically) It kind of makes you feel old huh? Watching your little sister get married.
Aaron: (Smug) No.
Alex: (Smug too) Me neither.
(They chuckle as the DJ makes an announcement)
DJ: If everyone could please clear the dance floor, it's time for the groom and his mother and the bride and her father to lead us in a dance.
Alex: That's my cue.
(The DJ plays Breathe Again by Sara Bareilles. Amber and Andrew stand up and meet Carina and Alex on the dance floor where he dances with Carina and Amber dances with Alex)
Carina: (Grins as they dance) I really wish mama was here to dance with you.
Andrew: Me too, do you think she would've liked Amber?
Carina: She makes you happy, she would've loved her so much. Probably more than us just like with papa.
Andrew: (Chuckles) Yeah she does have a way with the DeLuca men doesn't she?
TRANSITION TO ALEX AND AMBER DANCING
Amber: You're not bad at this Dr. Karev.
Alex: (Grins) Thanks Dr. DeLuca, lucky for me that my ex wife made me take ballroom dancing lessons.
Amber: And lucky for my feet too…thank you for doing this for me. I know it wasn't easy raising me when you shouldn't have and being my dad at 13.
Alex: It wasn't…but I wouldn't take it back if I could.
Amber: Well, if I ended up like this with a 13-year-old you raising me I know those beautiful girls of yours are gonna grow up fantastic.
Alex: I'm holding you to that.
(Vincenzo gingerly approaches them)
Vincenzo: May I have this dance with my new daughter?
(Alex looks at Amber who nods that it's okay)
Alex: Sure, just don't step on her feet.
(Alex leaves the floor and Vincenzo takes over dancing with Amber)
Amber: I'm really glad you're here. And I'm really glad Andrew has his dad in his life again, at least one of us should have that. You're already an improvement over Jimmy Evans, I mean you're here.
Vincenzo: I know you're tired of hearing this but I am sorry for what your father put you through. And that he couldn't be here today.
Amber: It's fine I have Alex and I wouldn't have even invited him if he was alive. He made it clear he didn't want to be a part of my life when he walked out. And that is the nicest thing he ever did for me. I would be worse off if he stayed trust me.
Vincenzo: (Nods sadly) I know this won't make you feel better but…take it from a father who's also let his children down and disappointed them. He already regrets missing out on all the important moments of your life, including this one.
(Amber grins gratefully at Vincenzo as they continue to dance next to Andrew and Carina)
LATER THAT NIGHT
SCENE: FRONT OF THE HOUSE
(Amber and Andrew laugh as they run out to the driveway where Amber's car is parked with the words 'Just Married' painted in the rearview window in white paint)
Amber: (Laughs) I told them not to do this. I specifically asked Nick to make sure Levi didn't do this.
Andrew: (Smiles) Honey it's a wedding, the first wedding any of us have had in this hellish year you gotta expect people to do this properly.
Amber: (Smiles) Well as long as it gets us to our house so we can have our wedding night, I'll take it. Now take me home Andrew DeLuca.
Andrew: I thought you'd never ask Amber DeLuca.
Amber: (Likes it) Say that again.
Andrew: (Emphasizes) Amber DeLuca.
Amber: Oh god I love the way that sounds.
(Amber and Andrew kiss tenderly)
Andrew: I love you.
Amber: I love you.
(They get inside the car and drive off as a married couple)
