Bill was surprised to find Mabel waiting for him at the mansion. She looked excited and held something behind her back.

Bill asked, "What do you have there, Mabel?"

Mabel replied, "Oh, your new night, buddy!"

She retrieved a small-knitted lion with wings and a face resembling a human.

Bill gasped, "A sphinx!"

Bill took the plush toy from Mabel and held it closely.

"I named them Jinx," Mabel explained, "Now you won't feel so lonely at night."

Bill gushed, "Oh, thank you, Mabel! They're Wonderful!"

He became emotional because it was the first gift someone had ever willingly made for him. Tears of joy streamed down his face, and one droplet landed on Jinx's head.

Mabel smiled warmly.

Bill said, drying his tears, "Could you tell Dipper I figured out what I am?"

"Oh," Mabel asked, "What are you?"

Bill answered, "An Observer like my parental figure."

Mabel nodded, then rushed away.

Bill went to bed, Jinx in his arms. He fell asleep quickly.

Bill found himself dreaming of a mostly empty plane of existence. He looked around and saw blank space as far as he could see in every direction. Suddenly, he felt the ground beneath his feet, and a desert came into view as the temperature around him rose. He wandered through this place, feeling the sun burning the sand beneath his feet. He didn't even realize he was barefoot until the sand grew too hot to ignore. Despite feeling uncomfortable, he kept walking, unable to stop himself. He felt his body and realized he was only wearing a shirt and some shorts. However, he couldn't look down at himself to confirm since his eyes were glued to the path ahead. He wandered for a while, sweating buckets under the increasingly scorching heat of the sun. However, no matter how long he walked or how hot his body was, he wasn't growing thirsty or tired.

Suddenly, he spotted a towering statue of the Sphinx in the distance. As he approached it, his body remembered it needed to feel, and he collapsed into the sand, feeling dry and burned. He closed his eyes, ready to die, when a splash of cool water eased his agony. He got up and saw Jinx, but they were taller than expected, about the same size as the statue Bill had just seen. A well was nearby, and Jinx had a bucket in their mouth. They dropped the bucket and spoke.

"Master," Jinx said, "You have journeyed far without rest. Come, hop on my back, and I will escort you to where you are headed."

Jinx was lying on the sand, and Bill hopped on their back without fuss. Jinx used their wings to lift Bill high over the desert, soaring above the sun! Bill could see space for the first time in what felt like forever. It was different; he could observe all the star's constellations traced across the sky. Jinx was flying past Ursa Major and her cub, Ursa Minor. Slowly, Bill could observe them. She gave a knowing nod to Bill as Ursa Minor playfully chased a shooting star across the sky. Jinx sped up a bit as if looking for something. Then, at the same pace, Jinx flew past Orion, standing at attention as Bill passed, like a soldier saluting an old friend. Finally, Jinx flew back down to the earth, where it was now night. Bill could see the Pyramids in view.

Jinx asked, "Do you recognize these monuments, Master?"

Bill answered, "Yes, the Egyptians built them to appease me—a harsh reminder of my old evil to me now."

Jinx flew down, landing in front of the landmarks. Jinx then walked a bit further away and laid back down to rest.

"Indeed," Jinx said, "but perhaps there is another meaning you're not quite seeing, Master."

Bill asked, "What do you mean by that, Jinx?"

Jinx retorted, "Can you float, Master?"

Bill answered, "I can try, but I'm in my human body. I might hurt myself."

Jinx chuckled, "You know better than to do that, Master."

Bill got off his Sphinx, Jinx, and walked towards the pyramids. He sat down and started to think about light things like helium, feathers, butterflies, and paper. Suddenly, he felt like the ground was moving away, and he found himself floating above the pyramids. He noticed something strange; the pyramids were arranged to resemble the stars on Orion's belt. This amazed him because he had never noticed it before. At human size, he could appreciate how giant the pyramids were.

Bill floated back down very carefully back to Jinx.

Jinx asked, "Master, Do you understand the meaning of all this?"

"I think so," Bill said.

Jinx smiled and said, "Then I will continue to guard you as my ancestor has done, Master."

Bill saw the Sphinx Statue sitting at attention right next to Jinx.

Bill chuckled, "Thanks, Jinx, my faithful little pet."

He reached up, and Jinx lowered their head for Bill to pet their mane affectionately.

Bill paused to admire the Pyramids, but his attention was drawn back to Jinx as they pinned Rephic.

Rephic said, "You are braver than most, little plush, but your loyalty will only lead to your death!

"So be it," Jinx said, "My Master will be strong enough to take you on his own by then."

As Rephic let out a sinister laugh, Bill hurried towards Jinx. Suddenly, smoke started to pour out of Jinx's nostrils, and with a single breath, he unleashed a powerful blast of flames. The heat was so intense that it instantly turned the sand beneath Rephic into glass. To Bill's surprise, Rephic vanished from sight without a trace. He was left in shock.

Bill woke up still hugging Jinx with a soft grin. He tightly hugged the plush before getting up and preparing for the day.
