...yep. This was happening. Oh Briom, what was he getting himself into?
Deflax sat in his passenger seat of the rocket his mother was piloting, tapping a nervous gravitational floater on the seat. There were two on his egg shapped body, his oval head with antennas, ears, and adaption detectors floating overheat as they rested on his hands with a gem on the back, also floating in the air. He had a kind of curved up faceplate on his head, with two, worried, oval eyes looking off into blank space, and a curved white mouth currently in a worried frown, his body generally looking shades of blue, green, and purple, like he was a manifestation of space.
His mother glanced around for any possible incoming space debris, her shape similar to her son's, but having ears that tilted downwards, and a body that looked more like a wet napkin being held up by a carrot. The ship, techy and shapped like a giant pill, glided nimbly through the stars as it made it's way to it's destination: a space bus stop that housed the bus that would take Deflax to his first day of school. Technically, he was about a week late to going, due to problems that had come up around his hometown on his planet of Equilpy, but his parents felt sure he would be fine. After all, he was a Primsi, and they were known to adapt... though Deflax admittedly wasn't sure himself. He had a hard enough time adapting to some personal issues. How would he cope dealing with real world stuff? Hopefully this day went by quickly...
The space bus stop in question would soon be faintly coming into view, the ship's navigation computer pinging to show they were getting close. Deflax's mother looked into a mirror hovering around the top of the window, which turned slightly so she could look to the worried teenage Prismi.
"Ready for school, hun?"
"Hm?"
Deflax snapped out of his daze to look back to his mother, before glancing to the computer, which showed the distance between the ship and the their destination closing fast.
"..ah." He said, turning back to his mother.
"Mmhmm, that's right. We're almost there." His mother set the ship to autopilot before turning in her seat to face Deflax more directly, giving him a warm smile. "Feeling ready?"
Deflax shrugged a bit, which with his floating hands was just them moving up then down a bit. "Yeah, I guess..." He turned to stare out the window a bit, visible worry on his screen-like face. His mother sighed slightly.
"Look, you don't have to lie. I know you're nervous."
"Well... of course I am." Deflax turned to look forwards, staring blankly once more, though his mind was still on the conversation. "You know, I don't understand why I couldn't just be homeschooled..."
"A couple of reasons." His mother held up a hand and raised a finger as she counted them off. "One, your father and I agreed it would be better for you to have real world experience, rather then just what happens around home. Two, you'll be out of your comfort zone, so it'll be more likely you'll be put into a situation where you'll need to adapt. And three, you haven't made any friends around town, so perhaps sending you off to a school will help you get some."
Deflax sighed. "How do we know anyone will want to even be my friend? You know what I'm like..."
"I do." His mother smiled, reaching over to rub his shoulder. "But that's no reason to not try, right?"
"...I guess..." Deflax shifted in his seat slightly, his hands moving to nervously rub his gravitational floaters as if they were legs.
The ship was then felt shuffling into place before the intercom on the dashboard spoke. "You have arrived at: School Bus Stop."
Deflax took a deep breath then stood up... well, hovered upright, at the announcement, looking fully to his mom. "Well... this is it."
His mother nodded, smiling warmly as she wrapped her floating hands around Deflax's body, her own pressed up against his in a hugging way as her soon slowly hugged back. She leaned next to his head, giving him a kind of virtual kiss which Deflax received. "I know you'll do great, Deflax. Just be yourself, okay?"
Deflax nodded a bit. "...okay." He then let go of his mom and floated towards a door on the side of the ship, which opened up to an airlock. Clenching then unclenching his fists, he floated into the airlock, hearing the door bang shut behind him. His mother watched through the door's window, giving a smile and wave, before going back to the control panel. In a few seconds, she detached from the docking bay then flew the ship off, leaving Deflax to what he needed to do: get enrolled. She stared out the window a bit as she went, taking a deep breath. She was worried, but not that much so. Deflax knew how to take care of himself. He would be fine... surely...
Back at the bus stop, after a depressurization of the airlock, the door before Deflax opened, and he floated inside, glancing around. He found himself in a waiting room, with a scanner and circular platform on a desk in front of him, and some chairs to sit down on to the left. There was also another desk opposite the room, this one seeming to have some school supplies on it, and he also noticed a circular screen hanging from high on the wall, which had "CH" in large letters on it. That seemed to be where he was going... Cosmonious High. And since everyone else was already registered, there was no one else around. However, if the clock was accurate, he would be joined around this time by one of the teachers to register him, if his instructions were correct. All he could do was wait...
He hovered over to the nearest seat, about to sit down before noticing a brown stain on the metal floor, which appeared to be coffee. He grimaced and huffed. Really? He can't even register without coming across a mess? Looking around, he quickly saw a tissue box and pulled a couple of tissues before kneeling down near the ground, quickly getting to work cleaning it up, muttering to himself in annoyance. Unaware to him, the screen on the ceiling had turned... and it seemed to be watching him, though it was still displaying the letters "CH". After a few seconds, it went back to it's regular pose, like nothing happened.
Once the stain was cleaned, Deflax tossed the tissue away and finally went over to the seat, sitting down with a sigh. He then glanced around the room again as he waited, leaning his head back into his hands, tapping his face a bit nervously. The only noises he could hear was the humming of the scanner on the desk, and the occasional whistle of air that blew near him from the air circulation machines in the building.
Eventually though, he heard the noise of a ship parking outside and turned, seeing a bus stop next to an airlock through a window. A few seconds later, the airlock did it's cycling, before the inner door opened up, and a fellow alien walked into the room. They had a humanoid shape, but didn't have arms... at least, not on their torso. Instead, they had 6 appendages coming out of their rectangular head, with their body colour being green with darker green spots, and blue at the end of their appendages, as well as their legs. They also had slightly trippy hair of blue and pink, with the blue almost looking like a gooey substance. Their eyes, interestingly enough, had 4 pointed stars for pupils. As for their clothes, they had purple and pink bands around 4 of their appendages, a purple and pink armless jumper, shorts, and lace-up shoes, and some yellow and pink socks. Finally, there was a simple-looking green watch on the aliens lower left wristband, and a gold whistle around their neck by a blue band.
Knowing this was their cue, Deflax took a breath then stood up before heading to where the alien was going as she waved and spoke warmly to him, which was the desk with the scanner. "Hello, hello!"
Deflax nodded back a bit, standing on one side of the desk as the alien, the voice confirming to be a female, stood on the other side. "Hey there."
There was then a sudden double "ding" in the air, and the screen high on the wall would change away from the "CH" logo into a virtual face, with three eyes, two eyebrows, and one little smile. The display and eyes turned to look at Deflax, before a robotic male voice came from it. "Teacher has been called to complete registration. Cosmonious High welcomes our newest student!" After that, it turned back to it's original position as it changed back to the "CH" logo.
Deflax glanced over to the display as it spoke before turning back to the female alien, who was smiling brightly at him. "We certainly do! I'm Coach Leti. You must be the new Prismi!" She beamed.
Deflax nodded, his body floating around a little awkwardly, kind of like he was shuffling in place, as he glanced around. "Um, yeah, that's me..." He replied uncertainly.
Coach Leti looked a bit concerned, but maintained her smile, knowing he was probably just nervous. "Don't worry, this registration will take no time at all! First, we need to register your ID." She pulled out a blank, purple looking item with two empty screens and "Student ID" written on the bottom, then placed it on the circular platform on the table, making it light up slightly. An appendage of hers gestured to the scanner next to it. "Now, just place your hand on the bioscanner right here." She instructed.
Deflax looked to the scanner then did just that, reaching a floating hand out until it lay on the glass panel. A line waved up and down as it outlined the shape of his four fingered hand, before it started to fill up with purple coming from the bottom. With a jingle of success, text on the side of the scanner read "Prismi", before a ding filled the air again, and the screen pulled up a headshot of a Prismi, Deflax and Coach Leti turning to it as it spoke.
"Species: Prismi. Abilities: Spontaneous adaptation in times of need. Number of Prismi currently enrolled at Cosmonious High..." The display turned to a counter reading "000", before a rolling sound effect was heard. There was then a ding as the number changed to... "1!"
As the display returned to it's neutral state, Coach Leti turned back to Deflax with a smile. "So cool! I heard you Prismi adapt awesome abilities! Nice!" She then pulled a camera out from the desk, pointing it him. "Next, we need your picture. Just look into the lens and smile!" She said, trying to give positive waves to Deflax.
He however looked back at the camera hesitantly, then looked away, hiding his face a bit with a small frown. Coach Leti hummed then lowered the camera as her concern became more prevalent on her face. "...alright, we don't have to do that now if you don't want to." She said reassuringly as she put the camera back, before pulling out a keyboard, placing it on the table next to the platform. "What about your name? Can you tell me that?"
"...Deflax. D-E-F-L-A-X."
Coach Leti smiled again at hearing that and quickly typed on the keyboard. After a moment, there was a ding as the bottom screen of the ID changed to say Deflax's name. "There you go!" She took up the ID before handing it out to the Prismi. "You'll need to get your photo registered into this soon, but for now this will do!"
Deflax took the ID, looking it over a bit and seeing 'Cosmonious High' on the back. "I'll be sure to do that." He promised, looking away again. "Just... not yet."
Coach Leti nodded, reaching over to pat the Prismi on the shoulder with an appendage. "Hey, it's fine. You're nervous about all this. Totally understandable."
Deflax turned a bit to pull the appendage off. "Believe me, you don't know the half of it..."
"True enough, but I've registered plenty of other students that have been as nervous as you. Trust me, you're not alone in this. You just gotta take things one step at a time." Coach Leti smiled and gestured to the table with the school stuff on it. "Now, let's get you set up with a backpack and supplies!" She said eagerly as she went over to it herself.
Deflax simply nodded before going over, looking at the various things. There were a couple different shaped and coloured backpacks, different looking hats, different looking glasses, some knick-knacks, pencil cases, notebooks, among various other stuff. Quickly getting the idea, he grabbed a nice looking dark purple backpack with light purple on it and started packing it with a pencil case, which contained various drawing items, a few grey notebooks, some math tools, and even some energy bars. Once he had everything he thought he needed, he slung it over his shoulders, looking to Coach Leti with a nod. "Ready."
The couch smiled brightly. "Excellent! Head on into the space bus then, and I'll launch you to school!" She gestured to the airlock she had come from, and Deflax complied, making his way though. He was soon in the bus, noticing both the doors were open were open already, and Coach Leti called to him from outside, watching through a window of the bus stop and the bus itself. "All set!"
Deflax looked a bit confused, calling back. "What about you? Aren't you going to drive it?"
Coach Leti shook his head. "I'm going to clean up the supplies and take them back to the school! Don't worry, the bus is self driving!"
Then the display, where there was one in the bus, spoke up. "Please insert the au-authorization key to initiate launch!" Deflax looked to it a little confused. Did it just... glitch out?
Coach Leti didn't seem to notice, and glanced around before looking concerned. "Uh oh, wait! The key is floating over THERE!" She pointed to the door on the otherside of the bus Deflax had entered from, and he turned to so it floating a far ways away. "This is why you don't leave doors open in space..."
Deflax nodded. "Don't worry, I've got it." He held out his hand, concentrating his telekinesis on the key, before giving it a good flick towards him. The key promptly whipped towards the prismi, and he caught it, Couch Leti smiling and clapping.
"Perfect! That's a neat trick you have!" She complimented, making Deflax admittedly smile a little. He then popped the authorization key in, the bus started wurring to life, the doors closing on either side of him.
"Au-Au-Authorization... a-a-all set!" The display said, making Deflax look to it again in concern. It was DEFINITELY glitching out...
Coach Leti, again, didn't notice the studdering. "Good thing old Intercom is driving. Have fun at school!" She smiled and waved as the bus started to head out, though Deflax wasn't as optimistic as he watched the display rather worriedly. A bad feeling was swirling inside him, and he KNEW something was going to go wrong...
Sure enough, as the large building of Cosmonius High was coming into view, a floating sign nearby welcoming all the new students, the bus suddenly started careening away from the docking bay for the bus before nosediving towards a part of the building, Deflax immediately hitting the floor. "HOLY BRIOOOOOO-" (CRASH)
...today's first day of school was going to be interesting to say the least, wasn't it?
Surprise! I'm setting records again with the creation of the first ever fanfic dedicated to Cosmonius High! As a VR enthusiast, I love this game, and I hope to give it the love and attention it deserves for being such a fun experience. Hopefully this fanfic does it justice. Thanks for reading the inaugural chapter, and have a great day.
