Today was another typical, boring day in (elementary) school. She was tired and was lazily falling asleep, just leaving one opened in case. There would always be a reason for this as her body was telling her something was off and the nightmares were reoccurring again. For the past couple of night, she was having nightmares about a house on fire. It felt all too real and like it was déjà vu, again. This was another reoccurring event that made her pulse race and wake up screaming in the middle of the night.
Shinichi did not know that this was in fact a memory that her brain was push to the brink for her to remember. And her brain fighting against itself as it was trying to protect her from the truth because the truth was far more horrifying than what she remembered.
They were mummers of anything student joining the class. And she could care less. She was rather apathetic to the whole situation.
The kids were guessing if it was a boy or girl. And what kind of person they wanted them to be. Asking each other what they think they want this person to be. She could be careless and answered to be polite and get the conversation over with.
The name of the student was Haibara.
It was a girl and everyone was fascinated and she was not.
Genta was raising his hand for the girl to be seated beside him. He got so excited that he leaped out of his own seat and pulled a seat for her ready to sit down.
'How much a gentleman of him he is?' thought Shinichi sarcastically and almost amused at the simple things in life.
So, Shinichi and everyone else was more than surprised that this Haibara girl ignored Genta and sat right beside Christie instead.
"Nice to meet you" said Haibara to Christie.
The girl was not even looking her in the eye and making no eye contact with anyone at all. Shinichi noted that she did not even make eye contact with the teacher when she had come in or had anyone had only made eye contact with her in a moment so that she was able to spot her out of everyone else. This girl had planned to sit beside her even before she had gotten to the class.
Haibara was making very little conversation and just proceeded to take her stuff out of her bag and start the class as if it was all normal.
"Uhm…yeah" was all Shinichi could say.
This girl was not normal. She was not shy, excited or nervous even though she was now attending a new school. Haibara was not acting like a typical child and showed no signs that she was one other than the appearance of one.
"Whats with her, all stuck up" said an annoyed and insulted Genta.
Ayumi did not agree with this correct assessment.
"She's cool" said Ayumi excited. "She's probably just nervous" said Ayumi making excuses.
Ayumi was always the naïve and gullible type of they all knew it class had begun and finished.
Ayumi wanted all of them to walk home together. So, much so that Ayumi followed and shouted on her. Haibara rudely ignored her and walked away.
This girl was stuck up. The only person that she seemed to have interest was in Christie. This made Shinichi all the more suspicious of Haibara. Ayumi was the type of person that was genuinely nice to everyone and wanted to be friends with every person that she has met.
But kids being kids Mitsuhiko and Ayumi were not giving up hope.
"Where do you live? You just moved here right?" asked Mitsuhiko.
Mitsuhiko was showing signs that he may make a great detective with his lining of questioning.
"We can walk you home" said a hopeful Ayumi.
"22 Beika Block, Second Street" said Haibara dryly.
That address seemed familiar to her.
"That is currently where I reside" said Haibara formerly.
This girl was odd and talked more like an adult rather than a child. Even more so than her than was pretending to be a child and her words were rather calculating. It was as if she this sorted of speech pattern before and that it was a dangerous feeling that was resurfacing inside was angry and annoyed with this girl. Shinichi rarely hated someone the moment that she met them and would give them a chance, but she hated this girl with all her heart.
The address was near her house, and this made her even more suspicious.
They all went to get their shoes, so they could go home.
And then they had gotten into a conversation about 'The Junior Detective League' and Ayumi asking for the new girl to join. Shinichi was reminded that she was an unwilling member of this club and was only there because she would be stalked. Or the kids would be themselves in further danger with her present.
Her blood was boiling. She was angry. And she had not felt this kind of anger in what a seemed a very long about this girl made her skin crawl. There was the pain in her stomach that made her feel like she was going to be sick and this person was the cause of it. She was getting the feeling she wanted to do what Ran did to criminals when they were put in danger. Instead of backing her into a corner, she wanted to go through her and make sure she would never forget who she was.
Christie was in too deep in her thoughts that she barely realised that she was being pulled along, and being told that they had a case/request.
A kid called Nakada Toshiya.
Haibara quietly without saying a single world had followed them.
The case was from a boy. His older brother of ten years that gone missing by over a week ago.
But the police were called as a missing person record was made. The police were unable to do anything. They were no clues to their disappearance. There was no ransom call or any evidence that he had been taken against his will.
So, this finally seemed like 'The Junior Detective League' had a genuine case that needed to be solved.
