Chapter 51: Pick a Tune

On a school day like any other…

The grace period between classes was interrupted by a series of honks played like an old-time tune, and more than half the school heard it.

Then, came a very powerful and overtly feminine cry from a megaphone, "LEEEEEEEOOO! I need you to come out~"

After wading through a surprisingly huge crowd of students and faculty members, Leo was stunned to find a simple car parked right in front of the sidewalk and standing outside the open driver's door…was his aunt Alura.

She flung the megaphone into the car and placed one hand on her chest and stood on her toes to wave her other hand, "Heeeey! I see you, Leeeeeo! Don't be shy!"

Leo took this attention in stride, however embarrassing it might've been.

But hearing the crowd start gossiping about his ties to this woman, nay, the world famous singer and songwriter the Scarlet Succubus, was a little much for him to bear.

It didn't take long for Bang to push his way to the front of the crowd, coincidentally opening a path for Lyra to catch up.

Bang hunched forward and looked ready to lose his jaw from how slacked it was, "D-Duuude, that's the Scarlet Succubus!"

His voice was high-pitched with elation and disbelief, but that would be NOTHING compared to the sheer tonal shift Lyra's voice would take.

"WHERE?!" She screamed like she had just eaten a whole factory of sugar candies.

Leo slapped his forehead gently and sighed, "Why are you not using your illusions, Aunt?"

His heart skipped a beat as Lyra grabbed his shoulders, turned him towards her, and was quivering like she needed a fix, "L-Leo you gotta help me out, tell me where she is!"

Leo glanced aside at his aunt, who playfully wagged her fingers up and remarked, "Take your time, Leo!"

Leo could feel the sheer weight of a thousand stares surrounding his body like he was in a cage of knives, and none came closer to penetrating than Bang's curiosity laced gaze, "Bro! What's the story here? How's one of the biggest metal stars got your name on lock?!"

Leo saw him trying to put the pieces together, and in doing so ended up joining Lyra in clamping down his shoulders.

"Bro, you're not…a two-timer, are you?" The critique was scathing, but rather misguided.

"For one, Lyra and I aren't dating…" Leo came to his defense calmly.

"Yet." Lyra added confidently, which gave him cause to pause and look at her.

"...And two," Leo pointed at his aunt with a tiny bit of shame upon his face, "That's…my aunt."

Bang retracted his hands, "DUDE!"

"WHAT?!" Lyra shrieked in disbelief.

Leo had to look her straight in her energetic eyes and attempt to reach through, "...I hope you understand why I didn't admit this sooner."

Lyra shook her head rapidly, "Leo do you think I GIVE A SHIT when my idol's standing literally a few feet away from me RIGHT. THIS. MINUTE?!"

Lyra leaned in and admitted a personal bit of devotion, "I can even smell her haaaaaiiiirrr…It's lavender…aaaaaaaaaah!"

Leo's heart was all aflutter seeing her be THIS happy. However, he finally reversed who was doing the shoulder hold so he could try and bring her a little closer to the ground, "Leaning a little towards creepy there, Lyra."

Lyra's eyes bulged as she asserted, "You're facing the force of five-years of repressed fangirlism, Leo, either ride the tide or get outta my way!"

Leo relented with a sigh and faced his very patient aunt, "Is it ok if I bring my friend over to meet you?"

"Sure! I love meeting my fans!" Alura proclaimed sincerely.

Bang then interjected by turning Leo around and giving him a thumbs up, "Don't worry bro, I'll let you two have all the space you need."

He then put two fingers in his mouth and whistled, "Ok boys! Let's hold back the line!"

His fellow football players came out of nowhere to block off the front of the crowd who…really weren't making any attempt to swarm the music star.

Leo briefly appreciated the gesture anyways, then helped guide a nervously shaking Lyra over to his aunt.

Alura let out a faint giggle and remarked, "Glad to see you're making friends!"

Lyra was making an effort to try and line up her eyes with her idol with bated breath, and after making an approximate guess she said, "H-H-H-Hi…again!"

Alura gently put her hand on Lyra's face to stop her from staring at the hood of her car, then placed her fingertips over her lips and smiled, "You're Lyra, right? So, so sorry for hiding my identity back then!"

Lyra was shaking even more now, having to take a moment to pause and breathe before she collapsed, "I-It's ok…!"

She then leaned her head against Leo's shoulder and whispered, "She touched my face…!"

Leo knew that he was simply too passive to tame her spirit, and frankly, this was probably going to be the best day of her life for a long, long time…

However, this clearly was not a special visit to a fan.

"So, Aunt Alura, why are you here?" He asked politely.

"Oh you know, a word bounced here, a word bounced there, next thing I know, I thought I should step in and help you out with your problem!"

Leo raised a brow and was genuinely dumbfounded, "My…problem?"

Alura was about to open her mouth then pressed her lips. She tried leaning in for a whisper but knew that wouldn't work either.

So she pulled out her phone and quickly typed up for Leo to see, "About what you want to do in the future."

Not hard to piece together she heard about this from Maria's lips.

"Well, as it so happens, I'll be hosting a concert in the area! And I want to invite you to see how we set things up! You know…" Alura twirled her hand around, getting her point across good enough.

"...Hmm, opportunities like this don't come by often. Maybe seeing how the process works would help me decide if this is where I want to take my future."

Leo nodded, but there was just one problem, "I may be out of class, but it's still-"

Alura scoffed and brushed her hand out, "Oh I got permission from the principal the other day! You're clear!"

Leo blinked a few times and then looked at Lyra trying so hard to muster up the courage to say something else to her idol, "...Then can Lyra come too?"

"Absolutely!" Alura proclaimed, and with a stylish flip of her phone she hastily typed something up, waited a few seconds, and then upon hearing the 'Ding!' smiled and remarked, "Ok! I got Lyra out of class too!"

This sparked Lyra to rise back up and proclaim, "Shut! Up! Really?!"

Alura fanned her phone at her face with a cocky smile, "I am a VERY professional negotiator."

She added a wink as flourish, "Now hup hup! We got places to go, sights to see!"

She grit her teeth with a pained gasp, "Ooooh, that's in bad taste…"

After she got in the driver's seat, Leo helped Lyra into the back and sat opposite of her. She managed to get the seatbelt on just fine, but putting her feet down caused her to crunch down on an old snack bag.

"Ah, sorry, just HAD to have some peanut butter filled pretzels before I got here!" Alura said with little shame on her mind.

The engine purred and with everyone all set, Alura drove out of the school's parking lot a liiiittle over the speed limit.

It didn't take long for Lyra to nudge Leo's arms with her elbow and whisper, "Hey! I need you to describe the car's interior!"

"Ummm…" Leo looked around and tried to pump some enthusiasm into this rather mundane looking car, "Well, the seats are made of leather. There's…a cup holder between us…"

"...The ceiling light looks like it's ready to go out."

Alura interjected, "Yeah, should really get around to that."

Leo paused for a few moments to check Lyra's expression. Somehow, her abundance of adoration wasn't in decline, "So this is just a normal car?"

Alura took advantage of being at a red light to look back and say, "Limos are soooo overrated. They're stuffy, their radios have horrible audio balance, and worst of all…!"

Alura puffed her cheeks upon facing the road, "You can't take them into drive-thrus!"

Lyra gasped in awe over that factoid.

A little while later, she swallowed deep and remarked, "S-So Miss Scarlet…Or Miss Succubus! Or…or…!"

"Oh please, just call me Alura!" She replied cheerfully.

"Aaaaaah…!" Lyra squealed, then resumed in confidence, "Ok Alura! Can we listen to some music along the way?"

"Ah! I'm surprised I didn't think of it sooner! As an adoring fan, tell me your favorite song!"

"The Killing Rose!" Lyra shouted with the speed of a hamster after seeds.

"Ooooh! You…have excellent taste!" Alura had to wait for them to get to another red light before she fiddled with her audio player, but meanwhile she gladly detailed some tidbits about that song, "There's a ton of internet rumors spread around that I spent months coming up with this song, but in actuality, I came up with it after a bottle of rose scented shampoo fell on my foot while I was showering!"

She then let out a gasp, "Ah! Leo, you don't mind if I play this song, do you?"

Leo shrugged and was already in the midst of getting out his headphones, "I got my tunes to play."

Lyra held his hand and pouted, "Leeeeeo, I've been trying to get you to listen to this song for months now! I know you'll love it!"

"Ehhhh…" Leo still had his reservations.

"Is that soooo?" Alura added to their conversation a bit of her spontaneous curiosity, "You really think you can convert my nephew into a metalhead?"

Lyra held her head up proudly and said, "It's like the story of Green Eggs and Ham!"

Leo said calmly, "But I'm not being stubborn about it."

Lyra waved her hand back and forth, "You kind of are?"

"I mean, if he's made up his mind, you kind of have to respect that." Alura said, much to Leo's surprise.

"Mmmm…" And so, even Lyra had to pull back her efforts a little, "One time. That's all I ask."

"..." Leo felt a pang of guilt in his chest, and knew it wouldn't have gotten to this point had he not let the problem fester for this many months.

He settled on putting his phone down and Alura clued in on that, bringing to their attention a compromise, "Tell you what, I'll play the first few seconds and if you like it, I can start it back up again."

She reached for the music player only to slap her hand onto the wheel and remark, "Wait, never mind, we're at our first stop!"

Lyra could be seen visibly frustrated at how close they were to playing the song.

Leo wanted to console her but seeing as he was part of the problem to begin with…it probably wasn't a good idea.

He instead helped her out of the car, where she questioned, "Where are we?"

"At my old workplace!" Alura proclaimed, gesturing towards the three-story building parallel to her car, which had its own special parking spot.

Lyra's eyes popped wide open with a gasp, "Oh! I heard about this place from my dad! It used to be a run-down used music store on the verge of shutting down."

Alura then turned and added, "But then, a beautiful but very cute girl working there found her voice and the next thing you know, this became THE go-to spot to getting her records a day earlier!"

Lyra turned to Leo and held onto his arm tightly, "It's like walking into a history museum…!"

Though Leo was perplexed, "Why here first?"

Alura puffed her cheeks a bit and looked slightly disgruntled, "Can't you let me handle things like a grown-up, Leo? Gosh…"

Admittedly, she was trying to take this seriously, so it was rude of him to keep questioning her methods.

So he quieted down, did his duty as a gentleman by helping Lyra along, and together the three of them managed to find their way inside after pushing through a few customers.

It was a little crowded inside, but manageable with Alura's aid.

"I still need your help Leo." Lyra said politely, albeit with a little pushiness in her voice.

"Well…the walls are a lavish shade of fading red. There's rows upon rows of CDs in alphabetical order, by artist and genre."

Lyra raised her nose for a quick sniff, "Wow, you can SMELL the age in the air!"

Alura giggled, "Oh no, that's probably just Stewart forgetting to shower again."

"HEY!" Shouted the cashier, a man with a mullet of dirty blonde hair with some sharp pink highlights in the bangs, two nose rings, and a mish-mish of different clothes put together in a sloppy fashion.

Alura guided her two followers to the man and he raised his knuckles with a smile, "How's my favorite guitar heroine?"

Alura hit his knuckles back with extra oomph and made him wince, "Oh you know, business as usual! Raking in the profits, Stewart?"

"You're damn right! I even got a date tonight!" He said with a happy finger snap across the chest.

"And how old is she?" Alura said in a teasing tone.

Stewart closed his eyes and scowled, "Aaaah c'mon, Alura, I'm a changed man…"

"Hee hee hee, consider it me paying you back for teasing my innocent little butt years ago," Alura then stepped aside and let her two charges through, "Anywho, this is my nephew, Leo. And next to him is his friend of the girl variety, Lyra!"

Lyra waddled up in front of the counter and said, "H-Hi. I'm a HUGE fan of the Sca-I-I mean…Alura's music."

Stewart leaned against the counter and smirked, "Oh yeah? I bet you don't have every CD she's ever made."

"Easily! I even have her first demo record!" Lyra said, holding her head up high.

"REALLY? That's a rare find these days! Buuuut, I bet you don't have a signed poster of her first concert!"

Alura gave him the side-eye, "Is that REALLY a feat when you got the Friend Discount?"

"...Point taken, but I still got it!" Stewart said, truly not a man who can be felled by humility.

Leo let the two duke it out for fan supremacy while he looked around the store, "This is a lot of people. I never realized how much fame entailed…"

Because this was simply a store at the end of the day. The amount of fans that would come to a concert would be…Well, the thought of it felt very, very overwhelming.

And he looked at his aunt, standing among her adoring fans like she was simply one of them, and wondered how she managed to remain so perky all the time.

Suddenly, he was thrown off by Lyra grabbing the side of her shirt like she was prepared to lift it up with a declaration of, "Well I got a tat-"

Leo's heart jumped as he put a hand on her shoulder to make her stop, "L-Lyra, whatever you're trying to prove, I think that's taking it too far."

She blushed and then tucked her shirt back in.

Stewart grinned, "I like your enthusiasm, kid. Buuuut, I think I veered us off-track. What're you after, Alura?"

Alura laughed, "Just trying to show my nephew how the music industry works."

"Oh so he's an up and coming rockstar/metalhead?" Stewart remarked.

"Not even close." Lyra remarked with a dash of fondness to offset the bluntness.

"I play a lot of softer instruments. Harmonica, violin…"

Stewart started to yawn, but Alura jabbed him in the nose with her elbow before anyone could blink.

"O-Ow! Hey!" After Alura snapped him a quick glare, he looked at Leo and stuttered, "I-I mean, hey…you do you, buddy!"

The three had to leave the store not long after before it became too packed for them to escape. After they made their way back to the car and Lyra was settled into her seat, Alura pulled Leo off to the side for a moment.

"Sorry 'bout that. You can totally see why he's still a bachelor though, right?" She said with a slightly joking tone.

Leo didn't care about the comment. Much. But it got him thinking in other ways, "It does feel like quieter music isn't in vogue as much these days."

"There's a place out there for every genre of music. Even rap!" After that bit of inspiring talk, Alura went on to lower her voice and say, "I noticed you got awfully quiet all of a sudden. Did I jump the gun taking you on this trip, Leo?"

Leo shook his head, albeit with hesitation, "I'll be honest, maybe? But if you didn't force me into seeing what this is like, I might have never tried to experience it myself."

"And…" Leo looked into the car, seeing Lyra still smiling as brightly as when they first took off, "I don't want to stop this early."

"Hmmm…" Alura tapped her lips with a finger and slowly remarked in a sing-song manner, "Ooookay. Then next stop, the backstage of my concert!"

Lyra squealed in high-pitched elation, causing Leo to tremble as he entered the car.

Before starting up the car, Alura slapped her forehead and proclaimed, "Oh, duh! Let's get some tunes going!"

She turned on the music player and began the drive all over again.

Whereas Leo expected an immediate bombardment of heavy metal instruments and a powerful wail, instead he was greeted by a very subdued wail, punctuated by the occasional wind chime and a long, piano sonata.

The wail came to an end, and he expected the vocals to kick in. But instead, one last chime rang out, and the piano lingered for a few extra seconds.

And then, a sudden pause was interrupted by an even more sudden and bombastic arrangement of drums, bass and violins.

He became so lost in the instruments that he ignored the vocals. He did not realize that such normally delicate picks could be used to powerfully invoke the spirit, and in truth, he felt embarrassed at his preconceived opinions being laid bare as immature.

He was snapped back to reality by the song being put on pause, and Alura dangling a question before his now more opened eyes, "What did you think?"

Leo had to take his experiences and find a way to describe them properly, "I…did not expect any of that."

He glanced aside and saw Lyra clenching her fists in triumph, "So you get it now? Metal music is the power of the soul in action!"

Though Leo was feeling more enlightened, he was still a humble soul at heart and had to admit, "...I'm sorry, I was so focused on the instruments that I didn't listen to the vocals."

Lyra proceeded to puff her lips in a cute pout and looked one move away from lightly slapping him across the face.

To ease her frustrations, Leo nodded and told her, "I admit, you were right though, Lyra. I should give this another listen on my own time."

Lyra raised a brow out of an understandable doubt, but if there was one thing a Whiter was best at…

"I PROMISE I will." He said firmly.

"Promise promise?" She whispered.

"Yes, promise promise."

Alura giggled like a high schooler, "Oh you two."

She then leaned her head back slightly and remarked, "By the by, you'll want to look for the 'Scarlet Sky' album online."

"Duly noted, thank you." Leo took the time to search for that on his music player app before the chance slipped his mind.

It was a rather quaint and brief feeling drive to the concert area, the Tacoma Dome, where the only people currently parked there seemed to be the setup crew.

Once inside the building, it turned out the crew was just getting started. There was heavy machinery lifting people into the rafters to set up lights, and the ground folk were working on acoustics and props.

Alura's usual songstress attire was hung up on a mannequin.

And one man was holding down the operations all by himself with the aid of a multifunctional headset. He wore a velvet vest, a striped shirt with saggy jeans, and had a pierced left ear along with a wedding ring on his finger.

He seemed like a pretty mild-mannered fellow, as regular as regular gets, but Alura approached him with a wave of her hand and a faintly pleasant smile, "HEEEY JEFF! Sorry I'm soooo late!"

The man turned and his tablet tried to slip out of his grasp, "A-Alura! N-No, actually…you're early."

He turned to the two young wards and remarked, "Oh, is this your nephew?"

"...Aaaand…?" He hung on looking at Lyra.

"A girl who happens to be his friend!" Lyra said, playing along with Alura's earlier assessment.

Jeff chuckled, "Ah, that's how it is, eh?"

Alura said, "Hope you don't mind!"

He shook his head, "It shouldn't be dangerous for them to be around. As long as they avoid the walkway, we've been having trouble with securing the lights."

He pointed up at the ceiling and Alura propped a fist on her hip to pout, "Again? We really need to get a better dealer for screws…"

"Don't worry, I got that covered." Jeff said, holding the tablet up to her chest.

Alura browsed it over and then patted him on the shoulder with a good deal of familiarity, "You ROCK!"

Jeff got a light blush and then walked off with his tablet and a stage plan to help get the backdrop set up.

Meanwhile, Lyra pulled away from Leo and with the help of her cane, carefully navigated the area with awestruck eyes darting every which way.

"So this is where the magic happens!"

When Leo caught up with her, she turned and asked him, "Hey, what kind of set are they putting together?"

"Can't tell, they don't have many props set up." Leo said honestly.

Alura ran up between them and put her hands on their shoulders, "Sorry to disappoint ya, Lyra, but I'm just doing a rerun of Seductive Shudder here as a favor to someone."

"Awww, that's a bummer. I was SO CLOSE to getting an exclusive scoop!"

Alura winked at her, "Well I won't let you leave empty-handed. Want to touch my stage dress?"

Lyra exhaled the loudest gasp you ever did hear, "Would I?!"

Jeff happened to be wandering back their way so Alura let out a shrill whistle and remarked, "Hey! Guide the starstruck lady to my dress, wouldja?"

"S-Sure!" Jeff came off, tucked the tablet under his arm, and with a gentlemanly gesture he took Lyra by the hand, "My lady."

"That's sweet, but I'm not fragile enough to be that fancy." Lyra nevertheless took his hand and tried to hold back her shakes of anticipation on the way over.

With her in safe and capable hands, Leo took another long look at the stage setup.

"All these separate parts come together to create a specific mood. I knew this. But…" He observed the hard work of everyone here. The guiding hand of people like Jeff.

"It takes more than a vision. It takes a will and the confidence to make certain decisions." Which as the last few months have proven, is a trait he's sorely been lacking.

"Compared to everyone else around me I'm…just a boat being guided down a river all on its own."

And so, he looked to his aunt trying to think about what could be changed, and making her decisions with authority laced with her usual carefree playfulness.

"You make this look so easy."

His slip of the tongue made Alura pause with her arm extended to flourish a command. Slightly flustered, but with a face beaming with pride she fanned her fingers beside her face and smiled, "I mean yeah, I'm an expert now!"

She then eased up a little with a slight chuckle to lead into it, "Emphasis on the 'now'. Cause hoooo, when I was starting off as an indie singer, I was a FUCK UP."

"Ordering the wrong audio equipment, failing to account for the amount of seats we'd be filling, not managing the budget of my crew properly."

"All these little hiccups added up to one big brain bubble of anxiety that made me want to scream my lungs dry."

She then closed her eyes and grinned, "But I hung on, and you know why?"

She brandished her hand towards the rows and rows of empty seats, "Cause one day, I'd be here, giving my every last breath to singing songs that'll latch onto someone's heart like prickly thorns and inspire them."

She then raised her pointer fingers and flicked them to her left, prompting Leo to see Lyra continuing to enjoy herself.

"And when I see young girls like her, it makes my heart just flutter with joy!"

After her initial glee at examining her idol's clothes, Lyra seemed more curious about learning from Jeff how they operated things around here.

Knowing her as he does now, Leo could imagine that Alura's music gave Lyra the motivation to think positively about every day.

"And here I was, brushing it off as something raunchy and over the top," With this, Leo shifted his views just slightly, "Music is music. It's the intent of the singer behind the words that determines its meaning and value."

"Aunt Alura, thank you for bringing me along today." He said with a steady bow.

"Awwww, it's nothing! But if you don't mind me asking, what exactly did you take away from this? You kiiiiinda came to a quick conclusion."

"I'm not sure yet. I need more time to think about it."

Alura nodded, "Good call! Never rush headlong into your future. Cause you don't want to spoil what you love. Trust me, music production is fun…but THIS?"

She gestured at the staff, "BIG pain in the ass."

Leo smiled, "I'll admit, it does look stressful managing all this."

"...Now I really don't get what dad's problem with you is though."

"Oh, he's just a pig-headed dumbass. Buuuuut, he's done well with you two. I'll let him have that. I guess."

Somewhere, Mew found himself sneezing.

Alura then patted Leo on the shoulder and gave a thumbs up, "Whenever you need music advice, you know who to come to!"

"Aaaaaaaanyways. Feel free to stay as long as you want. I'm not too busy."

Leo looked at Lyra coming over and remarked, "That's a nice thought, but you know Lyra's dad is going to wonder where she is."

Alura gasped, "Crap! I forgot about him! Hang on…"

She left to call him up on her phone, and in her place Lyra finally seemed ready to slow down and catch her breath.

"Leo pinch me, I swear I'm dreaming…!"

Leo shrugged and then pinched her earlobe. She smiled and squealed like a little girl.

"Nope, it's real! Eeeeeee…!"

Leo retracted his hand, "I'm glad you're having fun."

"...Ah, forget me for a moment, what about you? This isn't uncomfortable?"

Leo tucked his hands into his pockets and looked around, "I didn't get what my aunt was up to at first. But now…I feel a little more certain about what I want to do with my musical talents."

Lyra's eyes widened, "Wait, you were having doubts?"

She clutched her cane in both hands and went "Ugh" off to the side.

"Leo, was my criticism bothering you all this time?" She said with a hint of guilt.

Leo shook his head, "No. I'm glad you spoke up. Because you were right. My music lacked a crucial element all this time."

"Respect."

"Respect?" Lyra echoed in confusion.

"I played partially out of what I felt was an obligation. I-Its…complicated. But I only liked music. I've never LOVED music. And unless you love what you're doing, anyone will be able to tell you're a fraud."

"T-That's a lot to take in," Lyra looked around awkwardly, "But that's what I was getting at…I think."

"I'll be honest Leo. I totally forgot what I was thinking that day."

Leo smiled and brushed the side of her hair out of her way, "It's alright, Lyra. I couldn't forget. Ever."

Lyra blushed and mumbled in a blubbery tone, "Oh this is the best day ever…"

She looked dizzy so Leo let up, feeling a little embarrassed himself.

"Cough, right…"

Two beet red teenagers stood perfectly ripe for Alura to come in and do a little teasing, "Do you need a few more moments?"

"N-No, we're good!" Lyra cheered.

"Well good news, I just cleared everything up with your dad, Lyra. He said as long as I get you back before nightfall, you can stay!"

"T-Then…is it possible that…" Lyra gulped tightly and then got it all out at once, "Icantryonyourdress?!"

"I mean, it's a little loose for your size, buuut I bet if I find a few belts…" Alura glanced at Leo with a sly smirk, "Whaddya say?"

Though Leo found his heart racing at the thought, his better judgment told him to say, "...Don't get through all your dreams in one day, Lyra."

Lyra pouted and then whispered to Alura, "Work in progress."

"Hee hee, just like his father." Alura giggled.

Mew sneezed again, this time on an important lap in the race, "Ok seriously, who the HELL…?!"

Lyra then giggled and glanced at Leo fondly, "But…it's why I like him."

Leo's heart fluttered with a smile.

"Same to you."
