A Meeting of Two Worlds

10 December 1776

Powder white snow blanketed the town of Davenport as winter had arrived on time for the holiday season and brought a stronger chill than before. Thankfully, the Templars had kept quiet during the recent months but Ratonhnhaké:ton didn't trust that unsettling silence to last very long. He had taken out three of his father's top officers and only Lee remained, but the man camouflage himself well in the colonies. He would wait until the time was right to strike and hopefully, he would end the Assassin-Templar conflict before more innocent lives were taken.

Ratonhnhaké:ton was jerked out of his ruminations by a tickle to his nose from a white feather. Rubbing his nose to subdue the ticklish sensation, he looked to the culprit sitting to his right. Caroline smiled sneakily as her fingertips brushed over the edge of the delicate feather before placing it on the couch. The two had barricaded themselves in the main study of the manor to spend time together while simultaneously learning to keep their skills sharp. Books lay scattered and open around them as he concentrated on current laws of the colonies while she tackled wind currents in the Atlantic.

He seized the feather from its resting spot to slide it between two pages to use it as a bookmark, closing the book. Some people preferred leather ties, but he used feathers for the colorful variation. The fireplace across from them glowed as he tended to the fire to keep them warm in the large study. Winter had been brutal that year but the couple didn't let the elements keep them away from each other. Caroline had bundled up in furs and layers to hike to the manor, shedding them quickly to get cozy beside the fire. He had offered to accompany her to spend time at her home but she couldn't have her family overhear anything about his secret life.

He had informed Achilles about Caroline's new knowledge of their order but the old man had not been happy. Davenport had become a civilian town and he did not want it shifting back to an Assassin's headquarters, knowing they would be an easy target for Templars. They knew about his hideout and if they sensed that their order was rising, the civilians would be at risk for an attack. Achilles tried to keep their town hidden as best he could and had warned Ratonhnhaké:ton about involving their residents in their work as time passed. The young assassin responded by closing the door to the study and locking it to avoid another argument.

Caroline didn't like to see them argue but the conflict between the two orders had the mentor and mentee butting heads. Hiding away in the study wouldn't solve any problems but she let it be out of respect for Ratonhnhaké:ton. Nudging her shoulder against his, she leaned into him as a makeshift pillow since his muscular broad torso made it comfy. They were both huddled in front of a couch for warmth but preferred sitting on the floor alongside their books for a wider reach.

They were due for a break from studying and she arched her back to stretch her limbs. He watched in amusement as she slid down his side from the motion and watched her fiddle with her tunic. She rolled onto the floor on her stomach to peer at him with a fond smile causing him to mirror the smile. Raising her upper body on its elbows, she poked his knee with her left index finger and teased, "I like laidback librarian Ratonhnhaké:ton."

He smiled openly to her unabashed affection but brushed it off modestly, causing her to laugh. While she had dressed in her male-oriented clothing to avoid tripping over a skirt in the snow, he had ditched his regular assassin attire while at home. Instead, he wore dark breeches while wool leggings covered his feet and donned a white tunic with a navy waistcoat over it. His raven hair was a free mess as he left it unbound, idly tucking a few strands behind his ear that broke free. He cast a different image at the manor but declined the remark by stating, "I am not a librarian."

"You'd get me to read in a flash if you were" she joked with a charming wink before shifting to sit upright again. His mysterious aura had been replaced by a laidback bookworm and she was smitten with that side of him as well. Plus, she enjoyed tickling his modesty with flirty compliments.

"Only because we met here years ago" he reminded because he doubted she'd bat an eye in his direction if she lived in the city. Not to mention, it wouldn't have allowed their bond to form as tightly as it had in Davenport. She would more than likely flee from him if he approached her in a random spot. His people weren't seen kindly by colonists and having her affection was a lucky draw on his part.

Caroline had a return quip for that as she placed her hands on her hips and smirked to preen, "Oh, I don't know. I think a dashing and mysterious native would be right up my alley."

He had no witty rebuttal to her alternate life dream because she hadn't conformed to the city lifestyle even when she had lived there. If she'd seen him in his deerskin outfit in Boston, she would've bounded up to him with a curious hello. Her mischievous smirk widened into a grin when he pulled her close by the waist, enjoying the firm grasp, and he joked lightly, "You'd have my face plastered in the city and the militia on a manhunt for kidnapping."

"That's why a heavy hardcover book to the face is a good deterrent to your enemies" she replied with glee as she scooted closer to him and wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders. Her fingers lightly combed through his thick raven hair as she enjoyed seeing his hair loose and untamed. He closed the gap between them with a short tug, practically dropping her onto his lap as they shared a laugh. Twisting a lock of his hair over her index finger, she smiled warmly and spoke softly, "Fate pulled us together from across the sea and I will never leave you, not in this life or any other."

He considered himself lucky that she hadn't abandoned him after revealing the truth about his secret life. Instead, she disseminated all the information she gathered to make her own judgment and stuck by his side. He was grateful to have her as his partner and doted her with affection now that they were home for the winter, leaning over to kiss her. Caroline was more than happy to reciprocate since the last months at home by his side had been a dream. He smiled at her giddiness when her full weight leaned against him, causing him to press his back against the couch.

"I received a letter from Aveline" he informed carefully to an update on their mutual friend and her face lit up to her friend's name. Back to business, as usual, but she didn't mind it. Besides, if he was letting her loiter in his lap, she'd take it. He didn't hesitate to involve her in his secret life nowadays and explained, "She's searching for a man with leads in New York so she will be stopping by here. Although, I wonder why she didn't go straight to the city and have us meet her there?"

"I sent a letter inviting her here for Christmas?" she supplied innocently to her planning behind the scenes and he sent her a questionable look. What happened to no secrets between them? She was having the assassin travel to them instead of her mark? Caroline shrugged to slide by his suspicious eye, patting his chest, and answered matter-of-factly, "What? We're avid pen pals now."

A switch went off in his mind at hearing that information and Ratonhnhaké:ton blurted, "Wait, is that why Stephane asked how many pigs would feed the town?"

"I also invited your Boston friends?" she revealed truthfully to what she had been doing in her spare time. With winter arriving early, she had cozied up to her fireplace to write letters to their friends requesting their presence for the holidays. All had accepted her requests and she'd spoken to the innkeepers about having spare rooms set up for them. The only person in store for the surprise was him as she smiled brightly, "I figured Christmas would be merrier with all of us!"

"Are you trying to make this the headquarters of the Assassins?" he asked suspiciously to her secret plans, amused by her attempt to bring everyone together. She hadn't given away any hints of such a visit so she was a tight vault in keeping secrets.

"That was decades ago" she reasoned quickly to such an idea because this was a spur of the moment plan due to the holidays. Still, having a remote place in the outdoors to upkeep their skills could prove advantageous. He shot her another knowing glance for being privy to that old information and she flashed him another innocent smile, "I've been talking to Mr. Davenport in my spare time."

She's too good at this already, he thought with amusement to her information gathering skills but she'd been in their midst since 1774. If he truly taught her everything he knew, would she match him equally? Or would she be targeted heavily by his enemies for it? She had great potential but he didn't want that skill to place her in harm's way.

"He might chase you away from our Order" he joked dryly to Achilles' view on how Assassins should behave and leaned back against the foot of the couch. Caroline laughed to his sarcasm and the adorable frown on the lips, shaking her head to the idea of abandoning him. Crossing his arms, he glanced at the burning fire across from them and muttered, "He has not been the most agreeable with my methods this year."

"Staying in the shadows and sabotage would work better than public attention" she advised because it would allow their agenda to remain hidden and avoid detection. If his plans or his associates were discovered, that was it. The endgame was to end the Templar forces in the colonies and find a way to keep them from returning. At least, in their lifetime. He frowned to hearing her side with Achilles' choice in strategy since he was ready blurt the Templar agenda to the Patriots and she pointed out gently, "Not that you're doing that, I'm merely mentioning my preference."

She was bringing everyone together so she could have different viewpoints to study, not just his and Achilles. He should approve that and let her roam with a mind full of ideas instead of frown, right? Tucking a strand of auburn hair behind her ear, he advised carefully, "Seeing as you've invited my assassins, you can have all your questions answered."

"Or merely come together for the holidays" she reminded simply because every meeting didn't mean it was business-related. They were free to enjoy time as friends as well, just like they did with the Davenport residents. Sliding off his lap to mimic his position on the floor, she crossed her legs to propose, "Bonds are quite powerful and the closer you are to your assassins, their loyalty will not waver. Look at us."

"You are my most loyal, yet you stick to the outskirts of this Order" he pointed out dryly to her unwavering loyalty, treasuring her trust in him. Four months had passed since he revealed the truth but she was quietly studying their order instead. There was no agreement to join them and he would let her take her time because it meant she wouldn't fall into the crossfire.

"I'm loyal to you" she declared with emphasis that she followed him and nobody else. His ideals had been closely tied to hers since childhood and they failed to change. They were becoming wiser with the brutality of their world but they remained grounded in their beliefs of hope, justice, and camaraderie. Wrapping her hands around his right forearm, she leaned over to kiss his freckled cheek with a fond smile.

He smiled gently to her unwavering affection, returning a soft kiss to her lips, and pointed out quietly, "You're in it by mere association."

Caroline scoffed dismissively to his claim but nudged her shoulder with his to tease, "Please, I can't leave my handsome outdoorsman all alone."

17 December 1776

Ratonhnhaké:ton had been tidying up the horse stables when he noticed a wagon approach the Mile's End from his perch on the hill. It wouldn't have caused him any concern but the small group of people exiting the wagon poked at him to investigate. He was naturally curious to any newcomers to Davenport and the scenic hill of the manor allowed him to keep an eye on the small town. Small groups could either bring good or bad news and knowing the Millers were an elderly couple, he was naturally protective.

He'd crossed the distance to the inn in no time and used the side door to enter the Mile's End quietly. With lunch time arriving soon, patrons were slowly trickling in to find seats as Oliver and Walter ran the bar. Standing at the front, he was surprised to find his assassins ordering a meal from the innkeepers. Had they arrived this quickly? Caroline had expected them a day before the holidays but they had arrived two days ahead of schedule. Hopefully, rooms would be free or he'd have to convince Achilles to house the small group. He could imagine that going over fine and dandy like sour candy.

Duncan was rubbing his hands together for warmth since the wool mittens he wore had done their best in the outdoors. Clipper was quickly perusing through the day's menu with Walter to soothe his gurgling stomach after the hours of travel. Aveline was the worst one for wear since the cold climate clashed against her warm blood as she shivered, ordering the hottest drink in the inn. A young man beside her who he had never met attempted to offer his coat repeatedly but she kept declining, despite her chattering teeth.

"Connor, mon amie!" Stephane exclaimed cheerfully as he opened his arms to welcome his friend. Pulling the reluctant Ratonhnhaké:ton into a one armed hug, he was glad to visit his quaint hometown. He had talked about visiting for years but now, it had become a reality with prodding from Caroline. Grinning widely, he boasted confidently, "We have arrived! I brought three pigs- I hope that is enough?"

Corrine had been expecting the small group but didn't count on them bringing fresh food with them. Caroline had informed her that they were friends from the city and she was bringing them together for the first time. The old innkeeper chuckled modestly to the offer since they had enough food for the holidays and assured, "That will suffice."

"You didn't have to but thank you" Ratonhnhaké:ton agreed because their trip was meant to be enjoyed with no strings attached. It was the first time he was opening his home and merging both of his lives together, hoping he did not invite ill will. Their group was always driven to complete their missions that they spared little time to mingle as friends and when they did, it was often at Stephane's pub. Turning to Corrine as she began to place plates of sizzling food on the counter for them, he asked politely, "Is it possible to request the rooms now?"

"Of course, dear" she chuckled warmly because they always had a few available for nightly stays. If they ran out of room, they could always convert part of the restaurant for sleeping until it was time for the breakfast crowd. During harsh winters, travelers were happy to simply have a roof over their head and warm bedding.

"Despite the heavy snow, we made quick time" Duncan informed as he smiled happily at his steaming chicken soup, thanking the innkeepers. He didn't waste time in eating to warm his cold bones and waved his hand to forfeit his chatting turn. After long hours on the cold road, he didn't realize how much he craved warm food since he'd taken turns with Clipper to drive the wagon. The food was certainly fresh, despite the winter season, and he smiled at the old innkeepers to compliment, "This is delicious! I will have to come here in the summer."

"Thank you" the elderly couple laughed since they had yet to get a complaint for their service. They loved what they did for a living and poured every ounce of love into their inn. Having their grandson learn the ropes also helped to preserve that humble quality when they passed it on one day. Martha's presence at the inn also helped them now that the young couple courted openly and they hoped to hear wedding bells soon.

"We managed to pick them up before the snowstorm hit Boston" Duncan explained because he had heard the frontiersmen talk about a snow front moving into town. Their group had been expected to leave later in the morning to arrive by the afternoon but he had ordered to move out within the hour of hearing it. Aveline and her companion, Gérald, were more than ready to hop in to get moving while Stephane finished loading the rest of their food load.

"This meat pie is delicious!" Clipper complimented as he devoured the meal quickly, only stopping to swallow his bites. The only hot fresh meals were made either by his hands over a campfire or eating at Stephane's tavern, enjoying the food on his short trip. He hadn't taken a trip for himself in years and spending it with his associates, now his friends, filled him with a new sense of home.

Aveline, however, was still trying to control her involuntarily spasms as she chugged hot cider to fill her stomach. With chattering teeth, she hunched over to warm herself and declared, "How can you all t-t-talk without a single shiver? I'm b-b-becoming an icicle."

"Would you take my jacket, mon ami tenace?" Gérald insisted once more as he held out his heavy black overcoat to her, shivering himself to the lost heat. When it came down to either himself or her, he would always choose her well-being first. Aveline, however, didn't want to take his protective layer for herself and shook her head. With a defeated sigh, he relented but paused when meeting Ratonhnhaké:ton's inquisitive gaze. Offering his right hand in greeting, he introduced himself with a friendly smile, "We finally meet, Connor. I am Gérald Blanc, the current owner of the Grandpré Trading Company. Most of our interactions have been through mail."

Ratonhnhaké:ton recognized him immediately since the startup of his own trading business, Davenport's Prospect, in 1775 had led Achilles to giving him information on their associates. Utilizing their trade companies as a front (aside from business), it allowed him to communicate and gather intel from Gérald for mutual missions. The intel officer handled the behind the scenes portion while Aveline took care of the physical and adventurous portion, proving the two a formidable team. Now that he thought about it, they reminded him of himself and Caroline.

"Welcome, I am glad you two arrived safely on the coast" he spoke amicably since they made the longest trek for the trip than his fellow Assassins. Unlike his Boston friends, the two were also there to track down a lead as they worked to reclaim New Orleans from the Templars. Whatever he could do to help, he would.

Caroline entered the inn with curiosity twinkling in her blue eyes since she'd spotted the wagon as well. The light snowfall led her to wearing a fur coat as an extra layer to avoid catching a cold, adding a wool hat to her head. Her eyes widened with glee at seeing her friends, confirming her suspicions and relief flooded her that they arrived safely. The darkened grey sky didn't look too happy right now and she expected another snowstorm to strike at any moment. She darted in happily to latch onto Duncan and Aveline as the two ate, surprising them. The perky blue eyes and two red braids on either side of her shoulders relaxed the two to the familiar face as she grinned with joy, "Welcome!"

Ratonhnhaké:ton smiled to her unbridled enthusiasm since she'd snuck in quietly to find them. She allowed her friends to eat, happy to their safe journey, and joined his side to wrap her arm around his in silent affection. Curious to how she knew about their arrival, he asked, "How did you know they were here?"

"I live across the inn, I can't avoid seeing the wagons on the road" she chuckled warmly because living across the inn on top of a hill allowed them a good view of everything. They were able to see who came and went, which proved handy if anyone tried to swindle the gentle innkeepers. She had been gathering fresh snow to thaw indoors when she'd spotted the wagon and decided to investigate. Breathing in happily about her home, she admitted, "The best part about this place is that we're too tucked away to get visitors in winter."

"Your winters are no joke" Aveline remarked with a sniffle as the cold finally began to leave her. The warmth of the inn helped tremendously, along with the hot drink, and she managed to grab her fork to begin eating her meal. Even her fingers had turned numb from the cold and she was happy to bend them in order to eat.

"We get taken out easily in the south in summer though" Clipper pointed out to the humid and hot climate that suffocated northern travelers. He wasn't a fan of traveling there unless necessary. Ratonhnhaké:ton sent him there twice and he'd endured a wardrobe change three times while running to the nearest river for relief.

"You'll get used to it in a few days" Caroline informed helpfully because her first days in Davenport were colder than nights in Boston. Despite being close to the sea in the city, the cove and heavy woodland added more wind to the town during winter. Smiling at her old friend, she promised to lend her heavier layers during her stay.

Ratonhnhaké:ton was a child of the outdoors so the cold elements of their town barely fazed him nowadays. Unlike his assassins that came from different backgrounds, he advised carefully, "Don't linger at night and always wear layers."

"Easier said than done" Aveline muttered flatly because her current mission would undoubtedly lead her into the snowy outdoors. She hadn't ventured north before but she was fortunate to have help from her brotherhood and Gérald's company made the travel less lonely. The other assassins had waited for her in Boston and advised her on what to wear for her travels as they accompanied the two to the shopping district for attire.

Caroline chuckled since her partner was undaunted by harsh elements, except cold Arctic waters. Gazing at him with a fond smile, she joked lightly, "True, he could survive a snowstorm in regular clothes."

"Thank you for inviting us to your home" Duncan smiled graciously for the kind invite and Caroline waved a dismissive hand. Her friends were more than welcome in town, even if she had to house them at home. They had always interacted during adventures and missions on mind, never relaxing long enough to simply be friends. Patting the empty end of the counter, he offered, "Join us for lunch."

Ratonhnhaké:ton offered the closest free seat to Caroline before sliding onto the next stool. He ordered the lunch special of the day and paid Walter before Caroline could fetch her coin purse. She shot him a knowing look for being one step ahead of her but he simply smiled. He would take care of her as promised in all facets of life. The couple was more than happy to dig into their chicken soup since the snowfall showed no signs of stopping.

"Who's up for a campfire tonight?" Caroline piped up to suggest a welcome for their friends where they could roast goodies. The winter season brought them endless cider from the maple trees and they could roast nuts or eat a freshly baked pie by the open fire. Wagging her eyebrows, she attempted to entice them, "We have lots of food and kindling!"

"An indoor campfire" Aveline corrected quickly because she'd be liable to freeze in place and become the newest town statue. She didn't mind spending time with her brethren but indoors where she had access to warm things.

Clipper laughed with sympathy to her hesitation and encouraged, "That's the northern way!"

"We'll get you some furs and it'll be like you never left home" Stephane agreed confidently to keep their southern friends comfortable. Aveline chuckled to their kind hospitality, surprised to finding no wary looks or derisive words sent her way since arriving in Boston. She had expected to be thrown out immediately or chastised but the Assassins knew what areas tolerated different cultures.

The main door to the inn opened as Elizabeth snuck inside after trailing behind her sister at a casually slow pace. Wiping fresh snow off her hooded green coat, she peeked inside to find her. She figured her sister had left for a reason during active snowfall and when she hadn't headed to the manor, she tagged along. At seeing the city residents that helped back them back in New York to save her friend, she smiled widely to finding out a new secret.

She watched the group converse as they ate but she was caught when Caroline turned to her partner. Catching her figure in her peripheral vision, her eyes narrowed like a hawk and she reprimanded, "Eliza!"

The younger redhead quickly shook her head to proclaim innocence and claimed a fib, "I was only here to buy butter!"

"I find that hard to believe" her sister disagreed to her sharp mind and figured she'd slipped out of their home from curiosity. She couldn't hide many things from her nowadays since adolescence had created a headstrong Elizabeth. In childhood, she had obeyed with a few grumbles but nowadays, she argued like a coherent adult.

"I was!" she insisted to stick to her small lie and crossed her arms with a pout to convince her. Caroline didn't buy it for a second because she hadn't even brought their butter dish. Still, she gave her points for her insistent charisma. She fought back from grinning when Elizabeth sauntered close to their group with a sweet tone, "But seeing as I'm here now- hello!"

"You all remember my little scamp of a sister, Elizabeth" Caroline introduced dryly and feigned a disappointed frown that led Elizabeth to hugging her from behind. Despite her confidence, she was still new to making friendships with adults after only being familiar to her town folk. Now that she was on the cusp on adulthood, she was walking similar steps that she had done years prior. Caroline squeezed her hands as they locked around her shoulders and smiled at her southern friend, "Except Miss Aveline and Mr. Blanc."

Aveline was pleasantly surprised to their facial similarities as they stood together and remarked, "She looks quite like you."

Ratonhnhaké:ton smiled with amusement to the fiery sisters since they were the most similar out of their siblings. Caroline chuckled softly to the comment on her little carbon copy while Elizabeth beamed to the compliment. She had grown up with Elizabeth tagging along from the moment she could walk so she was very protective of her. Raising her head to meet her mischievous gaze, she teased gently, "Twice the personality though."

"Are you here to celebrate the holidays?" Elizabeth asked with curiosity to seeing their faces at home for the first time. She had never seen out of town friends from either her sister or Ratonhnhaké:ton and with the holidays around the corner, it made sense. Back in New York, they had dispersed quickly and she'd only become familiar with the rifleman. Tilting her head to the side, she stated matter-of-factly, "We don't get out of towners here when the snow covers the roads but we can make one in a jiffy."

Caroline smiled to her investigative tone peeking through and informed her casually, "I invited them, I figure we need more friends during the holiday season."

"It's great out here!" she declared with a chirpy tone as she released her sister to wedge herself between the couple and the assassins. Ratonhnhaké:ton placed a hand on his partner's shoulder before she pulled her energetic sister back, silently signaling to let her be. They would be watching her the whole time anyway. Elizabeth took the spotlight as she counted off her fingers and told them confidently about their wintertime fun, "You can build snowmen, go ice skating over the frozen rivers, get maple syrup, go hunting- you name it!"

"I have been curious about hunting" Clipper spoke up with curiosity because he hunted in the outskirts of Boston and the rural counties. The woods of Davenport were dense so he knew worthy game was lurking out there. Although most predators were in hibernation, that left non-hibernating herbivores for the picking. With winter in full gear, he could hunt and store his catches to bring them back home. Setting aside his finished plate, he turned around to ask quickly, "Do you know any good grounds?"

Elizabeth perked up to nabbing someone's interest on wandering the outdoors and snapped her fingers to grin, "Do I? I know this land like the back of my hand!"

"Would you be willing to show a newbie around?" he asked hopefully because becoming lost in the woods within a day would not impress his leader. He hadn't forgotten the pretty redhead either but Elizabeth was more concerned with frolicking in the outdoors. She wasn't a typical colonial, much like her sister, and he was eager to make a friend that could hunt with him.

"You picked the best gal to show you around" she piped up confidently as she pressed a thumb to her chest, blue eyes bright against her dark coat. Caroline placed a hand over her mouth to muffle a laugh as her sister switched to her salesman's pitch. Had she sounded like that years ago too? Shooting him a cocky smile, Elizabeth proclaimed about her new tourism fun, "I even made a map! I can give you a quick or in-depth tour of the best spots at a cheap discount since you're Connor's friend. I'll even throw in a packed lunch if you choose the all-day option. If I were you, I'd choose the long tour since the Mile's End sells the best food."

"She's a businesswoman in the making" Gérald laughed to her savviness to bargain a deal and Aveline smiled with amusement, liking the spark in the teenager. She had talked so fast that Clipper struggled to keep up with her words and mumbled an agreement to whatever she deemed best. Ratonhnhaké:ton had been through that before with Caroline's lumber sales and wished the hunter his best.

"I think she lost him" Stephane snorted with amusement as Clipper tried to piece together everything she said. His blue-gray eyes blinked for a few moments before he simply agreed to whatever she wanted. Elizabeth grinned victoriously while the men shook their heads to Clipper's naïve trustfulness, wondering if he would've given her money before the tour.

"What's this about you going off to shoot?" Caroline intercepted protectively since she was still under the teaching guidance of Myriam. Her friend had informed her that she was a few lessons short of hunting alone and there was no way she'd let her run off during winter. Plus, Duncan had told her of Clipper's lingering crush on her sister which led her to state firmly, "Not on my watch."

Elizabeth's face fell in disappointment to being barred from her favorite sport and protested, "Carrie."

"You may go when it's not snowing and with us chaperoning" she replied with no room for negotiation and looked to her partner for solidarity, who was trying his earnest to ignore her gaze. If Caroline wouldn't have been the eldest, would he have suffered the same under another sibling when trying to court her? For once, he had struck luck. Caroline flicked his shoulder playfully to not having his vocal agreement but Ratonhnhaké:ton trusted his assassins. Now, if one did break his trust, they would best move clear across the ocean.

"You're worse than boban" Elizabeth muttered with dismay as her free nature conflicted with her family's wishes. Didn't her sister see she was doing the same that befell her years ago? Looking to Ratonhnhaké:ton for support, her friend shook his head silently. Despite he didn't vocalize agreement, he was in Caroline's corner when it came to protecting her safety.

"No, he'd grab Charlotte and chaperone" she corrected sharply because their father was protective over his daughters and any men trailing behind them. The only one he trusted was Ratonhnhaké:ton and Walter was now gaining his favor as Martha's suitor. Elizabeth blew a raspberry of disappointment before ordering hot chocolate. Peeking over her back, Caroline smiled at the group, "Welcome to Davenport, my friends."

The assassins had gathered at the manor since Ratonhnhaké:ton wanted them to know they had a place of refuge if they ever needed it. The old manor had served as his home for the last six years and it was time it opened to the new assassins, especially if they were openly recruiting now. New York was infested by the Templars and he saw an opportunity to create opposition there, planning to explore the colony next year. He doubted people would recognize him by that point and Duncan was his best operative for gathering intel due to his humble appearance. For now, however, he wanted his assassins to be aware of Davenport's existence if they needed to escape a hot area.

"I'm aware it's winter now but when the land is green again, you are welcome here for reprieve or training" he proposed amicably because Caroline was right in forging bonds to prevent betrayal in their ranks. He placed trust in everyone and he'd be severely disappointed if any turned their backs on him. It had happened once before from what Achilles told him and Ratonhnhaké:ton didn't want a repeat of history. Their assistance back in New York had proven that as all his friends had come together in unity to free him.

"Both, this place is huge" Clipper agreed instantly because the winter wonderland was gorgeous. He could only imagine the colors of summer and the bountiful hunting that awaited him. Elizabeth had already agreed to give him a tour so he had a pretty face with a sharp mind to follow. That is, if her older sister allowed her and didn't shoot out his kneecap first.

"Never did I expect to see a group of Assassins in town" Achilles remarked with astonishment to seeing a new generation of Asassins before him. He had expected their Order to fade into obscurity once he perished but instead, his idealistic protégé had now trained others. Seeing the assassins from New Orleans also stirred hope that there were others that resisted the Templars with better strategies and knowledge than his sect had. His student had brought them to the manor to introduce the duo since he'd only met the Bostonian assassins. Leaning on his cane, he smiled faintly, "One or two, maybe. Not five."

"Caroline can be quite persuasive" Aveline chuckled warmly to her friend's writing dedication since she heard from her more than any other affiliate. The redhead had yet to meet other women in the Order and being in the organization for well over a decade, she took on the role of a mentor. However, she promised Ratonhnhaké:ton that she wouldn't steal her away which amused the native. They had run around together on-board ships and during the Belladona mission but now, they could spend time together a friends.

The redhead had settled at the rear of the group as she leaned against a bookcase with crossed arms, shrugging lightly before smiling sheepishly with guilt, "Blame the holiday spirit."

Achilles turned to the young woman who had inadvertently happened upon their order, not surprised by it at all. She had been loyally tied to his protégé since arrival but her view was more cautious on the Order. Recently, she had approached him with questions and revealing his own past with the Assassins (mainly, the dormant technology of Eden) led Caroline to reassuring him that she would be on the lookout for such things on their trips. She did not want to be responsible for unknowingly destroying lives if she could help it and knew Ratonhnhaké:ton was the same. Despite he and Ratonhnhaké:ton fought frequently over their viewpoints on the war, Achilles and Caroline reached compromises with ease.

Nodding to the redhead with approval, he smiled warmly to his newest enforcer, "Ah, our recruit."

"Potential recruit" she corrected quickly with an awkward chuckle as she wandered into their world with the visit. Ratonhnhaké:ton smiled faintly with amusement to her tone because she was capable of matching his skills, especially after his discovery of her special sight. They had explored the snow-covered hills at night to climb trees and she'd failed to fall over the branches, further cementing his assumptions on her potential.

"You're literally one step away from initiation, Burnett" Duncan pointed out with a brotherly tone that led her to blow a dismissive raspberry. He had known her for over two years and before Ratonhnhaké:ton took over her training, they had spent their days free-running through ships and cities. She was more than ready to undertake their initiation and be part of their team. His friend, however, thought otherwise.

Caroline waved a dismissive hand to evade the idea and proposed innocently, "I still have a few questions which is a good thing because you're all here."

"Take this opportunity to learn from each other" Achilles encouraged kindly but Ratonhnhaké:ton frowned slightly when he emphasized it in his direction. He insisted on doing things his way with the least damage but Achilles knew that ideal view wouldn't work in the long term. They had almost let Johnson escape once and he didn't want a repeat of that causing dire consequences. Still, it was a time to relax as they rang in a new year and he let them carry on, "Enjoy your holiday."

The harsh winter of that year led him to retreating to his study or room to stay warm by the fireplace. Old age was also catching up to him during that season so he enjoyed sleeping in when he could. The assassins echoed their goodbyes as the old assassin retreated to the library and Ratonhnhaké:ton muttered under his breath, "I'm surprised he didn't chastise us."

Caroline was quick to dart forward and jabbed her boyfriend in his lower back, causing him to jerk to the odd sensation. Was she trying to trigger his ticklish areas in rebuttal? She didn't want the two bickering again, at least until next year, and chuckled softly, "Don't sour the holiday spirit."

"I'm doing no such thing" he objected truthfully and moved away from her reach to avoid those sneaky fingers. Being at home meant he sought peace of mind and being with his friends would keep him from saying anything rude to Achilles. The ongoing conflict between factions was slowly stretching their views on fighting the enemy so he hoped to get ideas to stop them now that the others were there.

"Let's go chop kindling for that campfire" Clipper piped up to get their vacation started and pointed to the door, slowly moving towards it. Duncan could see this was nonnegotiable since the young man enjoyed his time in the outdoors more than staying indoors. He'd seen the man walk into Stephane's restaurant resembling a living snowman after tracking his catches for a day. It was hard to keep him at bay and Davenport unleashed his inner outdoorsman.

Stephane clapped his hands to a sudden idea for snacks and suggested with a broad smile, "I can cut pork strips thin enough to toast over wood skewers! Let's go!"

Both men dragged away Duncan before he could even have a say and the trio left in a chorus of thundering footsteps. Aveline sighed sadly under her breath with disappointment that she'd bear a campfire in the northern cold and made a mental note to bring blankets. Caroline waved a hand in sympathy for her fellow redhead and called out, "Have fun, buddy!"

Aveline began to button her heavy coat to return to the snowy outdoors, peering at the redhead to ask with interest, "You're still undecided on joining us?"

She had gently poked her back in September after hearing about the fight for the Belladonna but her friend hesitated. Did she not believe their ideals? Or was she insecure in her skills? Caroline shrugged simply since she trusted her and confessed quietly to her apprehension, "I am not sure whether I have the skill for it."

Gérald decided to step in to offer his own insight into the order and informed helpfully, "Not all Assassins are into death-defying leaps, you know."

Caroline's eyebrow quirked at hearing that and he figured she had only met members who were actively on a battlefield against Templar forces. Not all positions were meant to be offensive-oriented because specialization in different fields kept them strong. Offering a friendly smile, he pointed out to the numerous positions she could uptake, "Some specialize in developing weapons, intelligence, medicine- it's not about simply assassinating our enemies."

Pressing a thumb to his chest, he admitted to his espionage to eliminate enemies, "I prefer gathering information on my enemies and staying behind the scenes to avoid detection," smiling at Aveline, he joked gently, "She handles the awe-inspiring acrobatics and sword fights."

The assassin smiled faintly but she pulled up the hood of his coat for the friendly jab. He simply laughed to her rebuttal as he adjusted the fur-lined hood while Caroline pondered over their words. She hadn't thought about the less spotlight oriented positions since Ratonhnhaké:ton had trained his assassins to be very proactive. The ongoing conflict between the Patriots and the Loyalists pushed that offense as well. Touching her chin, she gazed at the two thoughtfully for input, "So, if I wanted to stick to the Aquila alone, that would be fine?"

"Isn't that what Mr. Faulkner does?" he asked knowingly because the old sailor stuck to the mighty vessel only. Being capable at sea was just as equally as good as on land. They were responsible for the ship, crew, and cargo- all while fighting regular pirates and Templars. Caroline nodded with acknowledgement because her old friend was tied to the ship and although he accompanied Ratonhnhaké:ton to the outskirts of locations, he didn't head into active battlefields.

"He needs someone like you by his side" Aveline encouraged to compel her to join them because she would be an asset for all of them, not simply her leader. She didn't need to be by his side constantly because she relied on Gérald outside of fights. He retrofitted normal everyday items into weapons and gathered her intel while she handled the dirtier parts of the job. Offering a sympathetic smile, she suggested gently, "You don't need to follow him everywhere and mimic his life."

"How else can I make sure nobody will harm him?" she murmured softly to the thought of leaving him alone to fight against his enemies while she took a backseat. If she hindered him, she would stick to the Aquila. However, if she was truly capable to fight at his side, she would choose it in a heartbeat. What if he was struck by a weapon or miscalculated a shot? She wanted to be his second set of eyes and ears out there.

"That is a question only you can answer" Aveline sighed softly because that was a matter of the heart. The two were not bound in a simple mentor-mentee role as their romantic entanglement drove their protectiveness. It could serve them well in a fight but also hinder it if one were injured. Still, it was Caroline's decision to make.

"Caroline."

Ratonhnhaké:ton's soft voice beckoned her attention and she turned to him, noticing him by the doorway that led to the entrance hall. He motioned for her to follow him and she nodded quickly, smiling apologetically to the duo. Aveline nodded in farewell as they followed her past the doorway to head right to the main entrance, informing her, "We will make our way back to the inn. We'll see you tonight."

Waving in farewell, Caroline turned to her heroic partner as she closed the distance between them. He passed by the large staircase before turning to the left against a wall, puzzling her. Was there something wrong with the wall? Did he need her advice on wallpaper or wooden paneling? Placing her hands on her hips, she asked with confusion, "What is it?"

"I have one last thing to show you" he answered quietly before gripping the candleholder on the wall and turned it sideways, activating the secret door that led to the basement. Caroline watched with astonishment when a hidden door opened as it led down a dimly lit stairway. Had that been there the whole time? How had she not spotted it? Boy, these Assassins were good. Extending his hand towards the staircase, he stated simply, "The rest of my secret life."

It was the last piece left of his life as an Assassin and with winter in full blast, he felt inclined to reveal it. She wasn't one of their order just yet but he couldn't lie to her, not now. She stepped inside carefully to study the secret room, watching her steps as she asked, "What is this place?"

"Where I strategize my plans for ending the Templar threat" he explained the purpose of the small room that was the central hub of his planning. Achilles had brought him here many years ago and he had improved the basement with a larger desk to contain his finds. Caroline noticed the room was lined with several outfits but she was most familiar to his white and blue garb. There was a test dummy in the center, whether for fighting or fitting the outfits for readjusting, and her fingers touched its fabric exterior. Walking behind the dummy to let her explore her curiosities, he approached the desk that stood under the paintings of his enemies. Refusing to gaze at them to avoid souring his mood, he turned around to glance at her to finish, "In my younger years, I would train my aim and craft my ammunition here before Big Dave arrived. If you're willing, I could train you here in hand-to-hand combat during the winter?"

"Is my preference for guns that obvious?" she chuckled softly to poke fun at herself since she left her sword as a last resort. If anything, she pulled out her knife first. There were certain weaponry areas that were weak and although she feared failure, she had to push herself to try. Otherwise, what was the point? He was offering time for her and she would take it in order to benefit them in the long run, nodding with certainty, "I agree. Anything to improve."

He was glad to hear it and pushed away from the desk to approach her with a pleased tone, "Once spring arrives, we will practice climbing in the mountains."

"And there goes my excitement" she sighed with dismay to dangling over endless chasms and death-defying jumps. Her heart jumped into her throat when she watched him do it and now, it was her turn. She didn't have fear running around the Aquila from her topmost height so she had to apply that same mindset to survive. Rubbing her shoulders to cast away the goosebumps to that pending training, she met his inquisitive gaze to remark with wonder, "You've lived quite an interesting, albeit dangerous, life."

He grasped her gloved hands into his to squeeze them with support and peered at her to tease gently, "Still willing to stay with me?"

"Always, you're not alone in this road anymore" she whispered gingerly with a loving smile as she cupped his face, running her thumbs over his freckled cheeks. They hadn't gone through hell for the past year only to call it quits. She was by his side, for good or worse, after knowing his life had been a lonely one since childhood. Her blue eyes locked onto his brown orbs as she promised earnestly, "I am your shield and sword against those who would harm you."

"Does this mean you're joining us?" he asked quizzically but she evaded the answer with a kiss to his lips. Affection could mean agreement but until she verbalized it, he wasn't sure. Knowing Caroline's tempestuous nature, he couldn't assume anything. Wrapping his arms around her waist, he fell into their kiss until she released him with a satisfied smile. Ratonhnhaké:ton had no idea what that meant as he brushed his nose against hers and confessed frankly, "I'm very much confused."

She burst into amused laughter to his lost tone and grasped the collar of his white coat to peck a soft kiss to his lips. Quite honestly, she had no idea either but she was leaning toward it. He decided not to complain as her affection seized his attention and she smiled happily, "Enjoy the festive season for now. We have a new year approaching us."

"I promise to end any conflicts swiftly" he vowed because everything appeared quiet on the Templar front, except for Aveline's mission. They would participate out of camaraderie but after that, he would stay bound to their home. He wanted to spend time with her away from that dangerous life and confessed quietly, "I want to be home with you when there is no need to be out there."

20 December 1776

The first night in Davenport blew in a snowstorm that sent the assassins for cover at the inn and Caroline called off their campfire night. The second night brought dangerous wind gusts that toppled a few of the older and weaker trees in the outskirts. It was on the third day when Caroline began jabbing and pointing at the sky to behave that Ratonhnhaké:ton broke his stoicism to laugh out loud. The redhead quickly stopped her reprimand of the clouded sky to blush beet red to the sound of his voice. When had he arrived?

"Nature keeps pushing back my campfire" she reasoned hastily as she crossed her arms to glance everywhere but at him. This was so embarrassing. If she'd been barefoot, she would've melted the snow underneath her feet. Ratonhnhaké:ton glanced at her with amusement as he leaned against the post of her front porch and watched her wring her hands sheepishly. Her plans had been thwarted by the weather but she wasn't licked yet, stating with confidence, "I just need one night."

"I'm sure the cold front will leave soon" he reassured to alleviate her worries about their friends stay being ruined. The group seemed more than happy to explore in the snow and their southern companions had managed to walk a trail without needing assistance.

Her fingertips grasped one of the soft feathers dangling from his armbands and she piped up hopefully to ask, "Happen to have any sun dances under your belt?"

"That's not how our rituals work" he replied dryly with a faint smile to her idea because Kanien'kehá:ka dances were not a spur of the moment event. They were carefully timed and based on the weather, lunar cycle, seasons, and land. They were not anywhere near the Sun ceremony timeline since spring was far away and he'd missed the maple celebration in order to spend time with her in their new relationship. Caroline pouted with disillusion to her last idea dwindling in the wind and he pointed out matter-of-factly, "Even if they did, I've never performed one."

"Spoilsport" she muttered with a small smile to his logic and absentmindedly kicked a small mound of snow.

"Give it one more day" he suggested gently to buy time for her because he could easily give his assassins practice scenarios to keep them occupied. Clipper found joy from simply collapsing in the snow while Duncan enjoyed the manor's library and Stephane was glued to the Mile's End for recipe ideas. He grasped her shoulders to pull her into a comforting embrace and she fell into it with a happy smile. His never-ending support relieved her nerves and she placed her trust in his judgement like she always did when troubled.

Sure enough, the next day brought clear skies with no snow or wind gusts to dampen the day. Ratonhnhaké:ton quickly became her good luck charm after that foretelling and even he had to wonder if he'd accidentally invoked a sun ritual. Instead of waiting for nighttime to watch the stars, Caroline decided to pull the trigger on her get-together before the weather decided to change. They could watch the stars another day.

Aveline was the happiest to have the campfire changed to daytime and had been the first one out, dragging Gérald behind her. He'd barely had time to throw on a wool scarf before she darted outside to meet Caroline and Ratonhnhaké:ton, who had begun building a campfire at the rear of the Mile's End. The innkeepers had carved specific areas for guests to build fires during their stay so the group would stay close to their lodgings.

Soon enough, the other assassins and their friends began to trickle into their selected spot. Ratonhnhaké:ton had rolled a few extra logs for benches since their group was not a small one by the slightest. Forming a circle around the fire, he deemed it successful while Caroline brought out two wicker baskets worth of plates, cups, and cutlery.

"I brought drinks!" Norris grinned excitedly as he carried two small wooden kegs under each arm. The miner had gladly supplied drinks for his friends and placed the kegs on top of a table beside the log circle. Nodding with accomplishment, he informed the gathering group, "There's more where that came from!"

Stephane burst from the rear door of the inn as he carried two platters of fresh meat in his arms to call out, "Fresh pork slices ready to toast!"

Walter was seconds behind him as the new innkeeper wore a white apron to signal his working hours. He and Stephane had prepared some of the food but the Frenchman had been eager to start the festivities. The raven-haired man held out a basket in his hands as he exclaimed to remind him, "Wait, you forgot the bread!"

"Just take your break and enjoy it, m'boy!" Oliver's cheerful voice called back from the bar to let his grandson enjoy the outing. He knew the campfire party was the highlight of the week for the young crowd and wanted him to enjoy his new friendships. Walter was more than happy to ball up his apron and toss it behind the door to join the others.

Clipper soon joined the two out the rear door with a basket since he'd managed to fetch a few catches in the forest for food. Corrine had been more than helpful in preparing his favorite meal of hers and informed his friends, "Meat pies! These things are amazing!"

"Hot cider for the heat inclined!" Gérald announced as he placed another keg on the table since he'd been retrieving it when Aveline had run outside. They were warm-blooded by nature so he wanted an alternative when their bones felt the unrelenting cold. At the same time, they would have underage drinkers so he wanted to be a responsible adult as well.

"Meat skewers!" Myriam piped in since she'd ventured out into the wilds with Clipper and Elizabeth for a quick hunt. The young girl would soon be ready to hunt on her own but Caroline wouldn't let her run off into the deep woods anytime soon. The Bostonian outdoorsman was as good as she was with his marksmanship, especially being a few years younger, and they scored a good bounty for the campfire. Elizabeth managed to nab a hare and counted that as good as any buck in her book.

Martha waved to her sister as she led their family troop of siblings, all bundled up in winter attire. Their heads were covered in fur and wool hats to hide their hair but Caroline could determine each from their heights. Now that they were either adults or adolescents, the only ones lacking height were Alice and Samuel. Amelia held onto the hands of Alice and Anne as the young girls traversed the heavy snow under their boots, hoping not to lose their footing on the incline. Samuel and Elizabeth were practically fearless as they skittered ahead like deer, darting past Martha. She shooed them away to avoid slipping on ice and falling over the snow to embarrass herself, calling out, "We brought blankets!"

Patrick's tall form closed the rear of the Burnett troop as his vision was obscured by the numerous blankets in his arms. Everyone had darted ahead of him to escape the chore of carrying the heavy bundle and he corrected sarcastically, "You mean I brought blankets."

"Same thing!" Elizabeth quipped cheekily with a laugh as she reached the top of the gentle slope to run to the campfire. Caroline shook her head to her sibling's antics, patting each of their heads fondly as they ran to the fire to warm up. She was happy to see her family and grabbed several of the fur throws to help her cousin see again, nodding to him with thanks. Together, they set down the hefty load at the edge of the outermost log to avoid any accidental fires. Otherwise, her parents would end her for losing theirs and Corrine's blankets.

"Let's get this fire started!" Norris smiled eagerly at seeing everyone had arrived on time and clapped his hands.

Ratonhnhaké:ton, however, pointed to the blazing fire that he and Caroline set up to state simply, "Already done."

The miner's peppy grin deflated at losing the opportunity to start a fire and Myriam clapped him on the back to cheer him up, "Next time."

The group found respective spots on the logs encircling the fire and grabbed a blanket from the large bundle. Aveline grabbed the thickest one to avoid becoming an icicle and wondered how the northern hunters like Clipper, Myriam, and Ratonhnhaké:ton didn't shudder to the chilly cold. Accustomed to being around open fires, Stephane and Walter began cooking the food for the group while Norris and Myriam tackled the drinks. With plenty of hands on deck, it wasn't long before everyone was drinking, eating, and mingling.

"Day or night, we'll figure a way to have fun" Caroline grinned with triumph to finally hosting their campfire to bridge both of Ratonhnhaké:ton's worlds. The only thing missing was his village but Caroline didn't know how she'd begin to tackle that one. She found a seat beside him and Amelia as she sniffed the hot food with a smile to declare, "Burnetts work hard but we play hard."

"You mean you boss me around while I do the heavy lifting" Patrick corrected smartly as he sat down at the adjacent log while her siblings sat beside her. Elizabeth had darted off to the opposite log with the assassins to hear Clipper's travel stories. Hearing about them from day one had gotten her enthused in his frontier lifestyle when he wasn't wandering through Boston. Martha, however, was stuck loyally beside Walter as he sat beside Myriam and Norris. Samuel stuck to Patrick's side as he sat down beside his youngest sister, keeping close to his best friends while in awe of the visitors.

"Hush" Caroline reprimanded with a laugh since they were prone to playful bickering at the mill. Once her father caught wind of their roughhousing, they stopped their fun and returned to their work. While he worked in the labor-intensive chopping and sawing, she handled assembling the sawed lumber and assessing their inventory. She'd tried logrolling once alongside him but her mother happened to walk by and it was never spoken of again.

"We did pretty good with this" Ratonhnhaké:ton remarked with accomplishment to their small party before the holiday season. He worried there wouldn't be enough food or supplies within the short timespan but their friends had hunted, baked, and assembled away. They had beaten the elements with their speed and camaraderie. Davenport was never short of hard workers after carving out their lives from nothing and he smiled faintly, "I'm impressed."

"You're our good luck charm" Caroline insisted playfully with a wink because his good heart carried a heartening spirit. He didn't believe in good luck because his life had been a mess up until reuniting with her, finding an anchor in all the chaos surrounding him. He smiled fondly when she prepared a bread roll with roasted meat for him on his plate when Walter passed the platter around. If anything, she was his luck charm.

"Thank you for inviting us to your home" Aveline spoke gratefully for the kind gesture and smiled widely when the young couple broke away from their private moment. Stephane laughed to their owl eyes as they tried to create a respectable space between them. With her siblings sharing the log, that was easier said than done.

"We've been friends for so long, we never considered visiting" Duncan laughed since their lives were shrouded in danger when carrying out missions. Their simple moments of friendship were mainly in Stephane's restaurant when they could catch a break. They met weekly with intel from the docks (Stephane's district), the rural outskirts (Clip's area), and his own in the Boston's interior.

"It's been long overdue" she chuckled to her oldest friends since she was coming up on three years of camaraderie with him and Aveline. They had shown her the foundations in disguise and free-running that had now become natural in her adventures. Happy to have them in a safe setting away from danger, she hoped to provide them a sliver of peace before they returned to their lives. Gazing at her youngest siblings, she winked to barter, "Now, if we get rowdy, not a word to mother."

"It's daytime" Martha pointed out shrewdly to what she had planned and Caroline raised her newest beer glass with an impish smile. When had she gotten that? She forgot she had a knack for it like their father and she crossed her arms to sigh with dismay, "You're a regular boban."

"I have you covered, sis" Samuel promised with a sailor's salute before biting into a rabbit meat skewer. The food was delicious and would have his fill while listening to the banter. However, he had a stipulation for keeping his lips shut. Pointing to his plate that was primarily filled with pork, his blue eyes gleamed as he compromised mischievously, "As long as you give me all the bacon I can eat. I don't mean several strips, I mean all that I can eat."

Caroline's eyes narrowed to his negotiation tactics and reluctantly admitted her pride. Samuel had always been peppy and although he idolized Ratonhnhaké:ton, he carried her edge in sarcasm. He was growing up to be a sharp lad, all right. Gérald laughed to the young boy's persistence and questioned the redhead with delight, "Are all your siblings this good at bargaining?"

"It's a family trait, I think" Caroline laughed in return because they were her lovable scamps and she'd protect them fiercely. They each carried their own charm and although they could bicker like territorial wolves, they were still in each other's corner at the end of the day. She pointed to Ratonhnhaké:ton with a playful grin before declaring her own fib, "Won him in a gunfight."

He withheld a sigh to her claim because their lives weren't shrouded in nonstop danger. His native roots could also have that easily believed by the rules of the wild frontier. Did that mean he could use the same joke about her in the future? He swiped her beer glass to remove her mind-altering ambrosia, causing her to pout for pity, and he corrected, "That's not-"

"Fine, he pulled me out of the sea like a mermaid and won me" she interjected to correct it into a humorous tale of their reunion since their true meeting was rather bland. Being introduced to him by her father didn't have that dramatic charm that allured people to storytelling. Batting her eyelashes at him like a damsel in distress, Ratonhnhaké:ton handed over her drink to Myriam as she sat across from them. Caroline's arms reached out comically to her lost ale, nudging her shoulder against his in protest, and exclaimed, "Nooo!"

"She's very good at fibbing" Duncan revealed to everyone who was not aware of her silver tongue. Caroline placed a finger over her lips to shush her friend before he spilled her secrets. They couldn't be drunk already, right? Even she'd barely sipped her drink before her handsome partner swiped it away.

"Good luck, you fished out the wrong mermaid" Martha teased Ratonhnhaké:ton since all of Davenport had heard about the couple by now. Surprisingly, it hadn't been her happy gossiping but Elizabeth's as she hollered it down the main road for all to hear- including the two. The cowbell had not helped. Seeing the couple chase after Elizabeth frantically to silence her had filled Martha with laughter for the week.

Caroline grabbed a random stick from the snow-covered ground to fling it at her with a grin. Her little sister fussed to the childish tactic and her siblings laughed when it landed nowhere near her. Crossing her arms, she resembled a disgruntled chipmunk until Walter offered maple candy to her. Guilty for appearing finicky, she grabbed one square piece sheepishly with a meek thank you. She blushed heavily when Elizabeth and Caroline outlined hearts with their hands over their chests and she hid her face behind his right shoulder, stirring laughter again.

"This town is so cozy, you all behave like family" Aveline chuckled to the easygoing and friendly nature of the small town. She never would've guessed there was a settlement in the middle of that dense forest but the road led right into the heart of it. It was a wholesome and humble town so she understood now why Ratonhnhaké:ton and Caroline carried similar traits.

"We fit naturally that way" Myriam agreed with a casual shrug because she bonded more with her friends than her true family. She'd found a sister in Caroline as the two hiked and hunted while Norris had begun making her heart flutter with his gentle friendly nature. If her friends decided to shoot off in separate directions, only then would she leave too. Placing a hand on her chest, she explained warmly, "Each of us contributes here and we lend a hand to any in need. My specialty is hunting so furs and food is my trade while Norris here mines for worthy ore."

"I officially moved here last month but I love this place" Walter agreed because the fresh air, friendly people, and lack of siblings made it perfect. He had a job with a living wage now and all the townspeople knew him whenever he prepared orders for them for dining or to take home. Bumping his shoulder against Martha's, he added in with a cheerful tone, "Great people, great views, great food! We're practically an advertisement."

"Tempting . . . but the bustling chaos of Boston drives me" Stephane admitted thoughtfully to the peaceful nature of Davenport compared to the hectic routine of city life. Unlike Clipper that preferred the outdoors, he was the type that enjoyed the loud sounds of a vibrant city. His restaurant was also thriving in the heart of Boston and it served as a hub for the Assassin's Order. If he left, he would leave behind his passion and a meeting spot for the Order.

"Nothing wrong with building a chateau" Norris suggested to a home away from home when one needed a break. Stephane agreed that he drove a good point. There was more than enough land in Davenport for new residents and Ratonhnhaké:ton's friends were rather amicable and helpful. Who wouldn't want similar neighbors?

Stephane's eyes lit up to another idea as he stood up and declared with zest, "Or a second restaurant!"

"Trying to give us competition, eh?" Walter chided gently with a laugh to having another restaurant in Davenport. With their food orienting more towards an English touch, a French comparison would be a breath of fresh air. Plus, he would have another chef to learn the ropes from.

Stephane laughed loudly to the jest and reached over to clap the young man on the back, "We French like to keep things spicy."

"This guy!" he replied excitedly as he pointed happily to the chef which caused the entire group to laugh at their pep. The Bostonian assassins had not expected the two to hit it off as friends right away since Stephane was not the greatest fan of the English. However, Walter had charmed the chef with kindness and an open kitchen. Food always did bring people together.

"I think Walter has a new best friend" Myriam chuckled to their enthusiasm to building a French eatery but variety would liven up the town.

Elizabeth shook a finger in warning to the two chefs as she leaned forward to proclaim, "Careful, Martha will get jealous."

"I am not the jealous type!" her sister disagreed indignantly because so far, she had no true competition. Unless he suddenly became homesick and he returned to New York . . . but she highly doubted it when gazing at his happy expression. She was glad that he had found a new friend since he was like Norris in being a peppy chatterbox. On arrival, he had been a quiet modest man but he'd slowly come out of his shell once his sisters left.

"Really? Because I am" Caroline disclosed with a sneaky smirk that she didn't trust one bit. Ratonhnhaké:ton was her first love and she had not gone down quietly in relinquishing him to Clara. The assassin hoped to never draw anyone's attention ever again because he did not want any of it. She was the only one he wanted in this life and would ignore all others. Caroline nibbled on a sizzling meat skewer before pointing it at her sister and stating, "And you have twice my rage when insulted."

"I can attest to that" Samuel piped up eagerly with a grin to join the conversation and disclosed unabashedly, "You should see her and Elizabeth go at it for the last bread roll-"

"Sam!" Martha and Amelia reprimanded to their family dinner squabbles, leading the brunette to blush with embarrassment. Walter, however, simply laughed merrily to her competitive nature since he tended to unleash her on any stubborn patrons.

Samuel had a simple reason as to why he joined the fray and showed them his empty tin plate to say, "My plate was void of bacon."

"We're also missing cider" Anne whispered to him as she showed him her empty cup and Samuel nodded, grabbing it to raise it above his head. The blond girl covered her eyes to his bold move since the redhead did not shy away from being vocal. Ratonhnhaké:ton was amused to his sudden gumption since he'd usually let his sisters do the talking.

"And a meat pie" Alice added in since they managed to eat an entire plate each while the adults were barely finishing off one. Now that they were each hitting growth spurts, they ate faster and more helpings than their siblings. Despite hitting adolescence, the nine-year old Anne still followed Alice loyally in town and the brunette was happy for the company.

Norris whistled to their voracious appetites and joked with a hearty laugh, "You eat enough for a militia."

"They cost about the same in food" Martha muttered sarcastically and aimed it more towards her youngest sibling. Alice was modest in her eating but they knew she needed to eat more with each gain in height since she'd always been a delicate child. Samuel, however, liked to hoard everything and eat until a food coma struck.

"He's a young lad, he needs to grow" Duncan chuckled to the young boy's enthusiasm to swipe food in exchange for keeping secrets. Remembering his own youth, he had to split his meal with his numerous siblings when hard times came. Coming from a large family, it sometimes meant having no food. Luckily for him, he was graced with a tall height despite his surname.

Samuel held up a clean skewer stick towards Caroline to emphasize the uncooked strips stored in their containers and she grumbled dryly, "My brother's an extortionist."

She walked over to yank the stick before ruffling his hair playfully to cook his newest batch of food. Ratonhnhaké:ton helped her by grabbing their cups to refill it with hot cider to ensure they didn't accidentally drink beer. Otherwise, that would be a whole new problem to explain to their parents.

"So, all of you are siblings?" Aveline asked curiously as she noticed the similar freckled-faces and bright eyes. The small group had arrived together in a jolly mood but she assumed they had been cousins, not all siblings. Their conversations gave away their familiarity as they chided each other and lacking siblings of her own, she caught on to their innocent jesting.

"Mother wanted a large family but I don't mind it one bit" Caroline smiled widely because it had been a hassle when little to bundle her siblings together but now that they were grown, it brought a new level of companionship. She and her sisters were prone to little arguments but not on the scale as they had been five years ago. Their childhood years were long gone behind them with Samuel clinging to the end at eleven years old. One day, she hoped to have a large family of her own and looked to the rest of her expanded family, "We keep adding more people too. Anne is my mother's goddaughter but she is practically our sister. Patrick's our cousin who works at the lumber mill and Ratonhnhaké:ton came home for an English lesson and never left."

"You mean you never let him leave" Amelia corrected gently because her sister had been attached to him within months of meeting, finding ways to meet him on the road. There had been apprehension mixed with awe to the mysterious native boy but curiosity won her over. It would soon be seven years of shared memories between them since Caroline had not been shy in seeking his company.

"That too" she agreed confidently with a fond wink to the man in question, almost causing him to drop his plate from modesty. Her hands were quick to grip it since she wanted him to eat a good meal now that they were at home instead of out at sea or the wilderness. Unlike Walter, who laughed to hearing about Martha's boldness, he was quiet and bashful about their relationship.

Ratonhnhaké:ton's fingers covered hers on the plate as he leaned closer to whisper by her ear, "You are threatening to make me blush."

"Is it working?" she teased slyly with a hidden smile as she pretended to poke at the food on her plate. Being on the quiet side, he could whisper to her without anyone overhearing. She stopped the smile tugging at her lips when she heard a defeated sigh on his end and he returned to his meal.

Patrick laughed from his spot at their display of affection as he sipped his drink and shook his head to say, "I can't believe you thought I was courting Caroline."

"I apologized" Ratonhnhaké:ton muttered flatly since the lumberjack heard about the spat between the two from Elizabeth. He was already embarrassed enough at not realizing the true relationship between the two was in blood, not attraction. It was hard to ignore the alarm and disgust on Caroline's face that night but she still laughed at the mention of it.

Patrick been away during the fall to help their Uncle Joseph up north at his farm to harvest for the season before returning to Davenport for the winter. If he could get any odd job to support his savings for a homestead, he would do it. Back in Davenport, he had been happy to hear of his cousin's news and hoped that meant the man would not glare daggers at him anymore. He had been trying to figure out why he could not get along with the other man and was finally relieved to hear it had been a simple misunderstanding with a crush on his cousin. Raising his hands, Ratonhnhaké:ton pointed out helplessly, "What else was I supposed to assume?"

He pointed to his trademark red hair and similar blue eyes to emphasize indignantly, "We practically look the same-"

"Finish calling me a man and I'm chucking you in the fire" Caroline interrupted firmly because they looked nothing alike and raised her empty plate to use it as a weapon. The lumberjack would not dare anger the feisty sailor and raised his hands peacefully for mercy. Ratonhnhaké:ton also realized that the innocent bickering between the two held no romantic inclination when looking back at their interactions. He'd been a bit foolish in his judgment but he blamed his heart for it.

"Ye got a siren, not a mermaid, my friend" Patrick informed the other man with a disappointed shake of the head to chide her even more. Caroline hurled her plate over her cousin's head but he scattered away to return to the large beer keg. As quickly as he had irritated her, her tune changed when she called out for a friendly drink since her boyfriend had swiped hers.

"You were welcomed back after leaving in 74, I was disowned for leaving the Church" Duncan admitted with a bitter laugh to his family's expectation despite being disillusioned with his work. Instead of finding sympathy from those who raised him, they'd turned his back on him. Caroline was quick to offer her friend a condolence beer and his smile turned genuine since the redhead had promised everlasting friendship when meeting back up. Like Ratonhnhaké:ton, she had his back.

"I come from a large family as well but we were never close as all of you" Clipper observed with a solemn smile since he was always left behind as the youngest. Being ignored as the runt is exactly why he left his family's cabin to head out on his own. He didn't regret it but he often wondered if all families were like his after feeling lost and unwanted. Seeing the large family before him, he could see that it was not necessarily true and that filled him with hope.

"We're as close as bugs in tree sap" Elizabeth laughed merrily because her sisters had always taken care of her and never left her astray. She could be a handful but they accepted her strong personality, finding understanding with her oldest sister. Shooting Clipper a bright smile, she piped up to suggest, "You can join our brigade, we have no limit!"

Caroline's eyes darted over to the two like a mother eagle and Ratonhnhaké:ton rubbed her upper back to snap her attention. His gaze told her to relax since he was aware that she was not ready for Elizabeth to court anyone at fifteen. With both nearby, he highly doubted anything would happen and he had already warned Clipper not to chase after the redhead. Like Caroline, he was a watchful older brother since they had seen Elizabeth grow up from a little rambunctious girl to the headstrong young woman before them.

"Our parents are good humble folk" Amelia stated with respect for their hardworking parents since they focused entirely on the safety of their children before their own. They didn't have anything but their meager savings and from the hardships they endured, their hearts only grew warmer. She was proud to be born to them and glanced at her siblings to smile modestly, "We're quite lucky."

"Don't tempt us to stay forever" Duncan joked because Walter was working on Stephane while Clipper hung to Elizabeth's every word. Traitors. He was accustomed to traveling from place to place that he never thought about putting roots down. The Assassin lifestyle suited him fine since he was able to meet numerous people and travel to different places. Still, that little flicker of family struck when spending time in close gatherings like this.

"How long are you all staying?" Myriam asked with curiosity since the Boston residents had disappeared suddenly back in New York after the prison fiasco ended.

Aveline and Stephane were the main ones strapped for time compared to the rest. She had a mission objective to complete before her trail was lost while the chef had to return to his business to make a living. Aveline kept quiet on the nature of her work and the Frenchman informed, "Likely a day or two after Christmas."

Caroline's face fell to hearing that their trip would end before the year finished and pouted, "But the New Year-"

"Caroline" Ratonhnhaké:ton warned since they had taken time out of their schedules to travel. His redheaded partner raised her hands peacefully because she meant nothing by it. She was glad to simply have their company without bullets flying past their heads.

"I understand" she agreed with a friendly smile and clasped her hands together to claim eagerly, "We'll make this the best Christmas bash that we'll bring in 1777 before it's time!"

"I like your enthusiasm" Norris chuckled because his friend didn't shy away from a good time. Once Clara left and released Ratonhnhaké:ton from her clutches, their stew nights had returned at full blast. Caroline had yet to convince him to drink or dance but she didn't relent. Myriam had bet a beer that Caroline would eventually win while he joined Ratonhnhaké:ton's corner with a negative.

"We've had one hell of a year, it's time to end it" Caroline sighed dismally as she recollected their entire year from memories. Clara had sent her up a wall early in the year to the point she'd cast aside Ratonhnhaké:ton as a friend, even contemplating the thought of giving up her position onboard. The Aquila brought her freedom and she protected her vessel fiercely, especially after she had carried her group of friends to save the captain from wrongful imprisonment. He had also experienced horrible mistreatment at the hands of the militia he was assisting in the war but he forgave it, refusing to speak of that incident. Nonetheless, her highlight was returning to his side.

"Language" Amelia and Ratonhnhaké:ton reminded, making her pout to the parenting. Caroline's hands reached out to grasp his and he assumed she wanted to hold his hand. He was surprised to the public display but if she was proud to be by his side, he would too. Instead, he gaped in dismay when she held him hostage by the hands in order to swipe her drink back on the opposite side.

"You are a siren" he murmured dryly to her sneaky trap as she used one hand to intertwine her fingers through both of his hands, locking them in place. Her free hand raised her ale cup victoriously as she managed to earn her drink and hold his hand at the same time.

"I'll make it up to you if you meet me by the barn tonight" she whispered sneakily and wagged her brows to convey her secret amorous message. While he was modest with her to maintain respect, she didn't hesitate to pull him behind a tree or building to kiss him silly. His gaze broke away from hers as he stammered on a decent response but gripped her fingers firmly between his.

Their private moment ended when Elizabeth hurled a snowball at Martha's back, laughing at the shriek sent her way. She had finished having her fill from the food, handing over her plate to Alice so her siblings had an extra plate to use for piling food. Martha cast aside her propriety to grab a handful of snow to chuck it at Elizabeth's scrambling form but gasped in horror when it struck Norris in the face. The miner had been laughing with his friends when the cold snow struck, causing Myriam to laugh as she handed him the end of her blanket.

"Snowball fig-" Elizabeth claimed excitedly but Caroline stuffed a biscuit into her mouth to block the rest of it. She did not need her little instigator angering their siblings and embarrassing her in front of company, earning a glare from her. How dare she stop her snowball rampage? Her fury dissipated seconds later, however, as she nibbled happily on the free biscuit.

"Once we're done eating, we can take a ride on the sleigh I brought" Clipper suggested perkily as he pointed to a wooden sleigh resting against the rear of the inn. It was large enough for adults and Caroline remembered the one Ratonhnhaké:ton had built when they were youngsters. It had been the best winter she'd spent at his side before she left to find her identity.

"You brought a toboggan?" Ratonhnhaké:ton asked with surprise to how prepared he was for the trip. He was the only one who had brought items to enjoy the outdoors, whether it was hunting, ice skating, and apparently, sleighing. Clipper was never the type to be unprepared and he seized a day's entirety, especially if he had a time constraint.

"Why not? Once I heard snowy hills, I had to!" Clipper reasoned because he would be around friends and meet new people. The redhead beside him carried a similar energetic spirit and she had managed to give him a short tour of Davenport's forest before snow had fallen heavily. Caroline had chaperoned the two with Ratonhnhaké:ton but the quartet had fun in the outdoors. Rubbing his cold nose, he laughed merrily, "Took a while to get the pig smell out."

"See, he gets it!" Elizabeth agreed to his adventurous spunk because her boundless energy exhausted many. Even now, a combined effort between Caroline, Myriam, and Ratonhnhaké:ton barely tired her. With Clipper visiting the town, they were glad to have another hand on deck to fizzle her energy. Caroline and Ratonhnhaké:ton shared a knowing look as the younger duo threatened to break their relaxed ambience.

It did not take long. Less than ten seconds, to be exact.

"Let's go find a hill!" he suggested to start the fun portion of their hangout and scooped fresh snow to wipe his hands down before standing up. Looking to the gathered group, he offered the use of his sleigh, "Who's up for a ride?"

The youngsters instantly agreed as they handed their plates to Caroline, casting her and Ratonhnhaké:ton aside instantly. Elizabeth didn't hesitate to wave her arms frantically as the three managed to wiggle in front of her to gain the first spot. Clipper couldn't help but laugh to her enthusiasm because she was the tallest one among them. Her energetic spirit was infectious to him and he grabbed the large sleigh to make his way to a slope behind the inn that ended before reaching David's home. His small troop followed closely behind with cheers while he proudly led them down the hill.

"That was fast" Aveline chuckled to being ditched at camp by the younger generation. She was comfortable where she was and did not find the sledding tempting at all. Walking over to pour herself another hot drink, she warmed her cold hands and smiled, "Didn't even get a goodbye."

"Quite frankly, I'm also tempted to join them" Gérald admitted sheepishly because the idea of flying down a hill at top speed was tempting. The lack of rough terrain in the snow appealed greatly to him to prevent accidental scrapes. Living in the south, he was accustomed to humidity, thunderstorm season, and the occasional flooding. Trying to convince his partner to join the wintertime fun, he justified, "It doesn't snow in New Orleans!"

"Oh, just go" she sighed with an amused smile to his enthusiasm, playfully pushing him forward to follow the other group. He didn't hesitate for a second and the others were surprised to his abnormally fast speed, barely leaving footprints in the snow.

"Great, I have to chaperone those two" Caroline sighed under her breath as she walked to the edge of the property, observing the two setting up the sled ride. Elizabeth corralled their excited siblings while Clipper checked the toboggan to ensure nothing was loose or broken after the trip. Her sister was a headstrong personality that could outmaneuver him, even if he was an assassin. Crossing her arms, she muttered with disillusion, "Here I thought Alice, Anne, and Sam would be my main concern."

"They will be fine, it's a mere slide downhill" Norris assured to the gentle slope and with numerous people around, doubted any funny business would happen. If anything, hitting a tree was the deadliest thing that could happen.

"You think she realizes she has a paramour?" Martha asked bluntly because despite her little sister's sharpness in survival, she was a dunce at romance. Elizabeth rejected acknowledging it despite teasing her sisters, including her, incessantly. Now, it was beginning to bite her foot for the first time but the little redhead was blind to it.

"Nope" Caroline replied easily since their little sister was all about thrills and adventures in her young life. She had been similar in seeking adventure but her heart had been smitten by Ratonhnhaké:ton. She had lagged in vocalizing it the first time while Martha was more proactive as a lady. Smiling with amusement, she added in, "I almost feel bad for Clip. Almost."

"That's mighty kind, given that you glared holes into him back in Boston" Duncan laughed loudly and Stephane joined in, remembering the alarmed look on Clipper's face. Still, the death glare had not deterred their young friend from keeping his little crush on her sister aflame. Ratonhnhaké:ton expected to console Clipper at some point when Caroline's overprotectiveness led her to chase him down.

"You are insanely protective" Myriam laughed loudly because her friend had been watching the two with the intensity of a hawk. The young hunter was quite amicable as he fell in between the mild-mannered Duncan and the boisterous Stephane. Caroline, however, still saw her little sister as inexperienced with the world at fifteen while Clipper was only a few months younger than herself.

"If boban finds out, he'll kill him" Amelia spoke softly as she placed a gloved hand on her cold cheek to warm it. Their father was already keeping mental tabs on Caroline and Martha, expecting an engagement by next year. He didn't need to add a third suitor to keep tabs on that would throw him into disarray and chuckled with amusement, "Poor Walter's still pending approval. Adding another suitor to his list won't bode well."

"I am? I thought I was in!" he blurted worriedly to the thought of not being accepted by their father. He wasn't a ruffian or dealing in illegal work, carving a modest living in the wild frontier as an innkeeper. Giving up his chance to return to the city should have been indicative of his sentiments as well, right? He had no idea what to do to gain his favor because he was not the heroic tomahawk wielding type like his neighbor. Hanging his head in disillusion, he sighed dejectedly, "Oh dear."

Martha was quick to encourage her partner, rubbing his back with one hand to insist, "The glazed ham helped, mother loves it."

"You'll be fine" Ratonhnhaké:ton assured his concerns because the Burnetts were firm in appearance only. Before his growth spurt, Godfrey towered over him like an oak tree but now, he had surpassed the lumberjack. The Scotsman respected hard work and loyalty which were two things that were not new for him and Walter was the same. His daughters carried the same ideals and he watched the youngest redhead seize the sled from his friend, murmuring softly, "Although if anyone throttles Clipper, it might be Elizabeth more than anyone for not being aware."

"Give her a year or two, she'll be blushing madly like I was" Caroline chuckled warmly since her sister was on the cusp of adulthood. She had respected Ratonhnhaké:ton before her little girlish crush blossomed into true love for the man he'd become. Her little sister had followed her steps so far as she took after her so Caroline expected her to realize the existence of the opposite gender soon.

"You still blush madly when you see him" Martha chided gently because despite the years of camaraderie, the two behaved like they'd just met. With winter decorating the landscape in white, the two would do chores around their homes to spend time together. Although, she did admit their youngest siblings did not help their romantic privacy by peeking out the window at the couple.

"You never stop blushing" she shot back for prodding her femininity since Martha resembled a shining rose every time she met Walter. They joked she did not even need to pinch her cheeks or add rouge (which they kept hidden away from their mother after Caroline secretly purchased it). Martha made a bold move by smacking her sister's right shoulder which caused the redhead to laugh at her light swat. She admired her gumption but her little sister needed to do a bit more lifting for strength.

"Ladies" Patrick intervened before the two began chasing each other in circles like little girls again. Ratonhnhaké:ton and Walter simply shared a knowing look to the squabbling tendencies of their partners. Thankfully, it was always benign. The lumberjack flicked both their foreheads to stop their shenanigans and chided, "I'm sure Uncle Godfrey can't wait to marry you both off and have you out his hair."

Caroline waved him away with a mischievous smile and grabbed Martha's right arm to pull her forward, "Let's go swipe that sleigh!"

A/N: This chapter came out really long- over 30 pages- so I'm breaking it into two pieces. I didn't expect it to come to that but it was fun typing it out since there are a lot of characters in one place at once. I'm still kicking, despite being inadvertently exposed to COVID in my line of work (please tell your healthcare workers and family when you're proven positive to avoid the spread), so being on the lookout for symptoms has not been fun. Thankfully, nobody's gotten sick from my unit since we're bringing our own gear nowadays and receive donations. Yet, somehow, my government can provide ammunition and gear to arm officers within hours to quell protests but the medical community has been waiting for proper life-saving supplies since March. I'm ready for 2020 to be over, guys.

So, aside from my little tangent on the government's horrid reaction to this pandemic, Connor and gang are bringing in the new year which will be calmer and Davenport focused. The next chapter will finish the holiday cheer as Connor and Caroline head to New York. Writing the next chapter had become a little bittersweet as I realize the excited group of kids that arrived at Davenport in Chapter 1 have now become grown-ups (minus Alice, Sam, and Anne) ready to begin their own lives. 1777 will definitely be the golden years' chapter for the couples in the story so I'm eager to dive into it.

Thank you to my awesome worldwide readers (US, UK, Germany, Canada, and the Philippines ranked last month's top 5) from 22 countries and my reviewers:

Taylor115: Haha, I think we're all glad to see Clara go (but we'll see her once more before the story truly ends). Thank you for enjoying the last chapter, it had a happier edge than the other chapters in that year- especially the summer party. I definitely like Connorline, it's like Caroline but with Connor in it- haha!

Merrick15: Thank you for the suggestions! Hopefully, I gave the couples enough writing time here but there will be other chapters for them. I'm ready for Myriam and Norris to become an item. Once Connor and Caroline marry, Samuel will definitely spend more time with his new brother-in-law but Elizabeth will likely beat him to any training. Myriam will definitely take up some teaching, likely alongside Clipper, since rifles are their best friends.

Chriswill02: It takes me about 3 weeks on average for a chapter. I have work three times a week for 12-hour shifts, then the next three days are spent to write my research papers for my master's program and the leftover is left for my fanfic stress relief. I start off with a dialogue skeleton before filling the core paragraphs to do a minimum of 10,000 words and re-edit it twice before posting. Red Dead Redemption 2 took up my social life for about three months when it first came out because I adored the game, similar to the first one. I love that game! Sadie, Charles, Uncle, and Hosea- besides the main man, Arthur- were my fave support characters. My first playthrough with Arthur fighting a legendary bear did not end as great as it did having Connor tackle bears, lol. I've actually thought of making a fanfic in the old west in the AC universe since one of Connor's kids will head out west to Wyoming to explore the frontier and being out there in the outdoors is breathtaking. Interacting with Native American tribes from several different states was also enlightening to get an idea of their culture, they are awesome as guides in the outdoors.

Faron Oakenshield: Despite her incessant heckling and time robbing, there was a secret mission to her annoyances. lol

East Coast Captain: I could only imagine a modern-day book club with both secret Assassins and Templars attending. I thought about whether Arno would trail after Shay for what he did, it's interesting to hear the VA thoughts on it. It would've made an interesting meetup between Connor and Arno since Shay was inadvertently involved in both their lives.

Thunderstike16: Yep, totally an intel spy. They will remain oblivious until Haytham drops morsels of information and while Connor leaves the matter at bay, Caroline is a whole different picture. She did warn her not to mess with her family.

LilyQuix: I loved dropping Haytham hints in the 1776 chapters since the man is sassy and entertaining. I can't wait for 1778, I can see Connor trying to leave him behind in a random dock while tracking down Church.

Jynxhasadragon: Thank you and I'm glad to have you onboard for this story! I've had moments when I've re-read chapters and went 'I wrote this?', lol. I enjoy writing and thankfully, it's paying off in graduate school grading-wise. There will definitely be more Connor/Carrie moments in the coming chapters.

Next Chapter Excerpt:

Ratonhnhaké:ton was impressed to the heavily decorated inn and the numerous banquet tables. Caroline had pulled their friends together to decorate the inn and set up everything, not wanting Corrine or Oliver to lend a hand so they could focus on the food. In a few hours, everything was complete and Aveline lit a few candles by the windowsills and tables to create a cozy ambience. He fiddled with the annoying cravat around his neck since he donned colonial attire for the festivities like he always did. Caroline reached up to adjust it, smoothing the white fabric down evenly, and he remarked, "This pulled together quite nicely."

"We have to do this every year!" she suggested eagerly with a peppy smile as her fingers smoothed down his brown coat to settle his discomfort. It wasn't from the fabric but more on nerves on engaging in another social with a small crowd. Despite his culture was heavily into socialization and group dynamics, he still held reservations and preferred the quiet outdoors. Caroline squeezed his broad shoulders with support before her mighty wolf decided to bolt outside for some fresh air and winked, "Davenport Homestead and Assassins unite!"

This was the first time both worlds were uniting and it figured the person that personified it brought them together. He gazed at her with light amusement to her positive energy and smiled to ask, "Does this mean you're following along with me on Aveline's mission?"

"I'm invited?" she asked with surprise with bright eyes to following along on another adventure. Well, more like an assassin's mission but still. He wasn't kidding about training her at all and her heart fluttered nervously to that prospect. She had prepared to be a sailor on the Aquila that year, accomplished it, and wondered if the following held passage into a secret order. Proud to be at his side once more, she hoped to meet his standards and admitted with sheepishly, "Wow, I didn't think. . . uh, sure!"

"You agreed to let me teach you but you can easily say no" he spoke carefully to leave a door open for her to decline in case she worried about the danger. She didn't have to join their order or risk her life in his business because her safety was the priority for him. Having her on the Aquila was a risk but being in the Order would raise it and he wouldn't forgive himself if she was injured.

Caroline waved a hand to dismiss skipping out on it and assured enthusiastically, "Absolutely not, a promise is a promise."

"Cap'n!"

The couple cut their conversation short as they turned around to greet the head officers of the Aquila. Caroline invited their faithful crew since she had grown to trust them while learning the ropes. She felt they deserved to celebrate another year gone by and Ratonhnhaké:ton asked with surprise, "You invited the crew too?"

"Of course! Ain't no true Assassin gathering til the Aquila joins" she answered with pride to their brave crew and waved happily at the gunnery officers and Robert. She had expected them to dress casually for the event since they were bachelors used to living simply. Instead, they faced well-dressed officers that were bathed and clean-shaven. To say the least, the couple was surprised to the fresh faces but Caroline opened her arms to compliment brightly, "David, you look dashing!"

"I feel like such a tool" he sighed dismally to dressing like a gentleman, which made his brother burst into hysterics. It was clear onboard the Aquila that Richard attempted some work into his appearance while David put on whatever clothes were nearby and smelled half-decent to call it a day. He wasn't the type to focus on his image which is why he shaved his head and face to avoid the hassle of grooming (and also avoiding critters to stick there).

"Still, I appreciate the effort" she beamed happily with a peppy pat on the shoulder to encourage the gunnery officer not to run out and abandon ship. David grumbled under his breath to appearing formal, in his view, but he'd done it out of respect for his captain. His solace was in knowing none of them were comfortable as they all fiddled with at least one part of their ensemble. Caroline fussed with her skirt, Robert with his hat, Ratonhnhaké:ton with his cravat, while his brother was the only one enjoying the getup. The redhead pointed to the large banquet behind them and invited cordially, "We have plenty of drink and food."

"Haven't been to such a swanky party" Richard whistled with approval to the festive hues and the shiny silverware. The captain and navigator had gone all out on the party and he would not disappoint them, eyeing the kegs instantly. Nudging his brother on the side, David sighed in relief at the thought of an ale and prayed it wasn't plain cider or juice. The lack of kids around them raised his chances.

"It's not fancy" Caroline assured the trio because she wasn't one for upscale parties but fun ones. The loggings camps and living in the countryside appealed to her as they brought merry and boisterous socials as basic propriety was the requirement. Her father could drink with the best of men and still walk home without wobbly steps so she wasn't one to talk.

"Then why are we dressed up?" Robert pointed out dryly to their getups but the attire kept them warm on the walk from the cove. The saltwater from the bay kept it from freezing but the water lowered to hypothermic levels similar to the frozen rivers and streams. Snapping his fingers towards their perky navigator, he emphasized to her clothing, "Even you're wearing a dress."

"Because you respect your cap'n" she shot back sarcastically with a laugh since they dressed casually for their summer socials. The winter required more layers which made it perfect for the residents to dust off heavier formal attire to wear it. She hadn't worn a thick wool dress since the previous year and after returning to her old self, the clothing no longer hung off her frame. Smiling politely, she spoke earnestly to the top officers, "Also, I want to thank you for taking me under your wing this past year and allowing me to learn."

Thank you for reading and stay safe! ^_^
