Gabby was nervous, she didn't know what it was going to be like seeing everybody again. Since her last visit a few years ago she only kept in touch with Stella, Kelly, Herrmann and Cruz on a regular basis, she heard from Mouch every once in a while but he was terrible with technology and she usually just talked to him when Herrmann and Cindy face-timed her. They had all told her a little bit about what had been going on since she had left, but they were all nervous talking to her about his new relationship with her former best friend.
As far as she knew, neither of them knew she was coming to the wedding let alone that she was the maid of honour, both Kelly and Stella wanting to avoid any drama that might have come with telling everyone that bit of information. She could understand that, and she had even offered not to come but both Kelly and Stella made it clear it was their wedding and they wanted her there and a part of it and they would deal with the fallout. They hoped that by not telling Matt or Brett until just before the ceremony they wouldn't have time to make a big deal about it.
And that's how they found themselves here, with Gabby and Matt seeing each other for the first time in years just before they were meant to walk down the aisle together both sending soft smiles to each other, but she could clearly see the shock and confusion on Matt's face.
"Gabby?" Matt asked.
"Hey, Matt." Not wanting to dwell on the situation for too long she turned to Stella and asked. "You ready? You have everything you need?"
"I'm ready, let's go get married." Stella answered, with a big smile on her face.
Gabby sporting a matching smile said, "Alright, let's do this thing."
And with that everyone got into position, bridesmaids and groomsmen took their positions in order with Gabby and Matt right in front of Stella, standing side by side for the first time in forever.
"I didn't know you'd be here." Matt whispered to Gabby as they waited for their turn to enter the church.
"I know."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Matt now isn't the right time." Gabby said just as the doors opened singling it was their turn to walk. Before they started walking Gabby cast one last look behind her at Stella and smiled at her friend, excited to finally get to see her marry her best friend.
The ceremony was beautiful and there wasn't a dry eye in the church. Stella and Kelly had never looked happier and Gabby was so thankful she had gotten to spend this special day with them. She was thankful that Matt hadn't tried to talk to her again during the photo session and Stella did her best to keep Brett, Matt and her away from each other whenever she could. They were at the venue getting into order for their entrance into the ballroom. Gabby had just finished making sure Stella was good and ready in her new outfit and had just gotten into position.
"Hey." Matt said when she appeared next to him.
"Hey, Matt."
"Is now the right time?"
"I think you know the answer to that." Gabby said just as the doors opened for the bridal party to start their entrances. As they all walked to their tables she knew this was going to be a long night until she finally talked to him.
Dinner was served, speeches had been made and the dancing had just begun. Matt decided that now was the right time to talk to Gabby. He would ask her to dance, that was something the best man and maid of honour did and then he would talk to her. He started looking around the hall for her and spotted her with Stella dancing around the dance floor. He couldn't believe how amazing she looked, scratch that he could believe it he just couldn't believe he was getting to see it. It had been so long since he had seen or talked to her and he knew that it was mostly his fault. He had so many regrets about the choices he made since the fundraiser but he couldn't take them back or apologize for them if she wouldn't talk to him. Taking his chance he started to make his way across the dance floor when he was stopped by Brett stepping in front of him.
"Wanna dance?" She asked.
"I don't know if that's such a good idea." Matt said, trying to look past Brett to find Gabby again hoping he was being discreet not wanting his girlfriend to cause a scene.
"Why?" Brett said with a bit of anger in her voice. "Because your ex-wife is here?"
"This really isn't the time for this. And you know that Gabby is more than just my ex-wife." Matt said, trying to also temper down the anger in his voice.
"I'm your girlfriend Matt, what does that even mean?"
Matt sighed, realizing they were going to do this now and singled to Brett that they should step outside. She started following him and he placed his arm on her lower back leading her outside the ballroom. Before he exited he turned back around to find Gabby and made direct eye contact with her immediately. She quickly turned away and he could see the hurt expression on her face and he knew he'd just messed up one more time.
Gabby wasn't avoiding Matt, she wasn't, because now was the right time. But she needed him to figure that out himself. He wanted to talk to her, and as much as she also wanted to talk to him she knew it had to come from him. Their situation wasn't ideal and was a lot more complicated than anyone could have anticipated when they first met all those years ago. When she finally caught his eye across the dance floor, he was with Brett with his hand on her back leading her out of the hall. She quickly turned around, unable to hide the hurt look on her face and made a b-line for the bar, knowing she had clearly misread the situation.
