Chapter 2 Missing
Bella put the case file of the victim they found this morning down. She closed her eyes, a headache was beginning to form. After, the had left the Morgue, they had been pouring over missing person's reports or searching the web for anything that may look remotely like the victim. It was how the first victim was identified. The 2nd and 3rd was a random crossing of neighbors. But, this one? Nada.
Bella was frustrated, had she been a runaway? Maybe they should speak with the tech team and see If Jared could get a hit with a nation wide search. She rose up which drew the attention of her partner.
"How about making a trip to see Jared?"
Jacob nodded. "Anything is better than looking over the same old stuff." Jacob made his way out and Bella picked up the picture of the victim that had been taken by Angela.
Jacob and Bella made their way to the Tech Operations. Jared was going back and forth working on something. Damn it he looked busy. He looked up when he saw us and grinned.
"I was wondering when you would make yourselves down here." He said as he sat down his chair. The man had 3 computers in front of him all on different things. One was on the news and Bella didn't need to see it. She knew what it was about, and she didn't need to be reminded of her inability to progress her case.
"Hey." She smiled. "I was wondering if you could see if you get any hits?" She held up the picture. "I'm not having any luck." Jared smiled brightly. "And here I thought you were offering me a real challenge."
Jared sat down in his swivel chair and got to work. Bella sat in another one nearby trying to keep her eyes open. She hadn't been sleeping well lately. She kept having dreams of something with red eyes and it kept coming after her. Jacob on the other hand was playing on his cellphone.
Bella was suddenly jerked awake and rose her head up. It was quiet and no one was around her. Which was odd. Did Jacob leave? Where was Jared? She rose quietly and made her way out of the department to head back to her desk. No one was around, and that was odd. This place stayed busy, no matter the time of day.
As she approached her desk, that's when she felt it. The cold air, it was freezing so bad she could see her breath in the air. What was going on? Why was it cold in here? The hairs on the back of her neck rose and she slowly turned around with her gun in her hand.
There it was, this time it looked like a man but also a beast. She couldn't see its face but its red eyes glowed at her.
"I've found you." It made its way to her. And she ran.
Bella jerked up, her neck aching for the way she had been laying. She was breathing hard and had the attention of Jacob and Jared.
"You okay Bells?" Jacob asked.
It was just a dream. "Yeah." She let out a shaky laugh. She calmed down and regained her composure. "Find anything?" She could tell Jacob didn't believe her but didn't comment.
"I did." Jared said. Bella turned her attention to his computer. There on the screen was a missing report for a young girl from Chicago. Her name was Bree Tanner and she looked a lot like the dead body in the morgue. Chicago Though? Bella then looked at Jacob. "Want to call the family and see?"
Jacob nodded and left the room. Bella stared at the girl on screen, she was a beautiful young girl and according to the report 23 years old. If it was her, how did she get here in New York? I guess Bella would get answers once the family arrived.
Hours later
Bella closed the door behind her, and shuffled through the mail laying her keys on the table. She lived in a two bedroom apartment, in a nice building with security. She put down the mail it was mainly junk and headed for the bedroom. She stripped her clothes off and pull the band that formed the knot on her head scratching it in the process. Her hair was long but she never styled it when she was at work nor did she wear much makeup. She then went and turned the shower on, and stepped under the hot water.
She was tired beyond tired. She really hoped she would be able to sleep tonight and not have dreams of the dreaded red eyes. When she was done with her shower, She quickly put on pjs, not even listening to the hunger in her stomach and went to sleep.
When Bella arrived at her desk the next morning, coffee in hand she noticed Jacob had beat her in today. Usually it was the other way around.
"Good morning," Bella said to Jacob.
"Morning Bells." Jacob said.
"Anything from the family?"
"Yeah, I told them we may have found their daughter, and they took the first flight out should have arrived this morning. I told them to come by this afternoon."
"Did you tell them about the body?" Bella needed to make sure Jacob didn't tell them that they was coming to identify an alive person.
"yeah, they are aware they will have to identify one." Jacob huffed out a breath. "I hate this part of the job." Bella nodded. She did too. Then Marcus her boss came by and asked for an update.
"So, anything? I still got the news hounds on my ass and the mayor." Bella could see the vein in his forehead throbbing. Bella couldn't stand him sometimes, all he did was chill in his office while she and the other agents did the hard work.
"No, not yet, we may have identified the body, waiting on confirmation." I said.
"When you know something, let me know we got to get a statement out." He said and huffed away.
"He's such an asshole." Jacob said and she nodded. "Can't agree more."
Then her office phone went off, it was the front desk telling her that Mr. And Mrs. Tanner had arrived. Bella told him to send them to the morgue and she would meet them there.
"Already?" Jacob said bewildered.
"They probably want to get this over with." She said. "I would if it was my child." She ended then sighed. She couldn't have children and the thought made her sad not that she would ever find a man to have them with. She had a medical condition that slimmed her chances of getting pregnant to 1%. She didn't trust much, and it was a good thing and a bad thing. A good thing because she never had to worry about getting hurt and a bad thing because she just wanted to be fulfilled.
When they arrived at the morgue, she signaled Angela to be ready. It sucked, it really did. Bella had a fight in her head, she wanted this body to be Bree, but at the same time she didn't. She needed something to get this case rolling, something to lead them to the killer. Bella hated it, but felt if this was in fact Bree, something would give her answers. Bella didn't know why, but obviously felt an connection to the young girl on the table.
Soon, two people approached her a man and a woman. The woman with her brown hair flowing, but was crying and being held by the man in his arms as they made their way towards them. Bella took in their appearance, her father always told her to always look out for a person on how they first look. Both of the parents, were visibly upset, Bella knew in her heart, that if this was in fact Bree Tanner her parents had nothing to do with this.
Jacob greeted both of them. "I'm Agent Black, we spoke on the phone." He shake each of their hands. "This is Agent Swan, she is the lead agent on this case."
Bella then went up to them,"Mr. and Mrs. Tanner, I'm sorry for the circumstances that bring you here, but thank you for coming." She said as she shook each of their hands.
"I just needed to know, you know?" Mrs. Tanner said shaking her head. "I haven't been able to sleep, worrying about where my little girl is."
Bella nodded and then Mr. Tanner spoke. "Agent Black told us to come this afternoon, but we had to know like my wife said." I nodded again and opened the morgue door where Angela was waiting with a body on the slab covered up.
"This is ." Angela sadly nodded. The couple slowly made their way to the body shaking as they walked. This was the hard part.
"I'll just bring the sheet down to her neck, so you can only see the face okay?" Angela said as both the couple nodded. "Just give confirmation if this is your daughter or not."
Bella then put her hand on their shoulders. "I'm sorry you even have to do this."
They nodded and Bella signaled to Angela to lower the sheet. Angela nodded and pulled the sheet down. Mrs. Tanner hit the floor crying, while Mr. Tanner tried to hold his wife but had tears running out of his eyes as well. Mrs. Tanner then started screaming, shaking her head back and forth, "No! No! not my little girl!" Mr. Tanner tried to comfort his wife, but couldn't to no avail.
Mr. Tanner then looked at Bella with his sad brown eyes full of tears. "Yes, that's her. That's my little Bree."
Bella nodded. "How about we give you a few minutes? I hate this but we really need to ask you some questions."
He nodded and both She and Jacob made their way out of the morgue. A lone tear fell down Bella's cheek and she quickly wiped it away. She hated this part but she would find the one that did this and make sure they received justice.
