Chapter 3 Found
Bella pulled out a chair and sat beside Jacob at the conference table. She hated this part, telling the families of the victims what happened to them. But also she hoped to get something this time. She needed answers and she hoped she could get justice for the victims.
She pulled her notepad out and looked at the couple across from her. They were still visibly upset, but were ready to talk.
"Mr. and Mrs. Tanner." Bella started..
"Ted and Diana, please," Ted said. His wife was still crying beside him.
Bella knew in her heart she needed some answers but she also thought the parents should be able to go back to their hotel and process first. "Maybe we should do this later.." Bella was cut off. "No!" Ted turned his head. "I need to know what happened to my daughter."
"Very well, I need to warn you that these pictures may be hard to look at." Jacob opened the case file but Bella slammed her hand down on it.
"Ted, Diana, you don't have to look at these pictures if you don't want to. We can tell you."
"No, we need to see," Diana said.
I nodded to Jacob and he opened the folder again. It was the pictures of how Bree had been found at the crime scene. Photos of her bruises but none of the bruises near her inner thighs had been shown yet.
"Oh, my poor baby." Diana cried out.
"She was found yesterday of course. Dr. Weber puts her death between 10pm - 1am the night before. She hadn't started decaying so we know the murder was recent. It was hard for the doctor to pinpoint a time since the body was colder than normal." Jacob finished.
"I'm confused, how do you know if the murder was recent if she was already cold. Doesn't it take a while for the body temperature to go down?" Ted said, confused.
"Yes, mainly, depending on the weather, if it's cold, the condition of the body. But the reason for your daughter was because she was devoid of blood." Jacob said without emotion.
"Wait, what? I'm confused. How?" Diana asked as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
.
"We haven't figured it out, there's nowhere on her body to indicate how it was removed from her body. However, she didn't have any blood in her body at the time of the autopsy," Jacob said it nonchalantly.
Ted then groaned and Diana held her hand to her mouth. Bella could have hit Jacob. I know they had seen this before, but they were in front of this girl's parents. He needed to have some sympathy.
Jacob realized what he did and apologized and then Bella took over trying to make the conversation easier.
"Mr. and Mrs. Tanner, we have reason to believe your daughter is the fourth victim in a series of murders that have happened in the last two weeks."
The couple gasped at each other, "You mean to tell me that my daughter was murdered like those other poor girls?" Ted said while Diana held a hand to her heart.
"Yes, Mr. Tanner. Her cause of death was the same as the others, she was left in a pair of panties, the blood from her body gone. However, your daughter was different from the other three girls as well." Bella finished, hating what she had to say next.
"Then, maybe she wasn't killed by the same person?" Diana added while Ted stared at Bella.
"Mrs. Tanner, it's not a copycat killer, the missing blood determines that." She nodded but looked green. She really wasn't going to like what was coming next.
"What I have to say is difficult, but you need to know." Bella took a breath. "Your daughter was sexually abused, she was also beaten. She was hit with a powerful blunt force object that split her spine." Bella then placed the photos down that showed Bree's backside covered in bruises and her inner thighs.
Diana grabbed them quickly, holding a hand to her mouth. "Oh god, my baby." Ted took them from her and gagged. "Oh God, I think I'm going to be sick." He quickly exited the room.
"Who could have done this?" Diana asked. "Why? Bree was so sweet, so kind."
"I don't know who, Mrs. Tanner, but I'm going to find out. Is there anything you could tell me? Anything different about Bree? Anything unusual pop out at you?"
"No, I mean Bree was smart, she made good grades, she had friends, she was normal. Well, until she got that job at that fancy billionaire's office."
"What billionaire?"
"Gosh, I'm sorry I can't remember his name. He has an office here and in Chicago." Diana closed her eyes. "She was so excited when she got the job, and then when she was promoted, she went back and forth from locations. Lately, she was acting cold, distant from me." Diana teared up again. "My daughter and I have always had a good relationship, very close, so when she snapped at me and I didn't talk to her for a few days, I knew something was wrong."
Diana began to pace the room." We always had Sunday dinner together, and she didn't show, I tried calling and her phone would ring. Her father and I went to her apartment but she wouldn't answer. She's my only child so I guess I was being dramatic, but I felt in my heart something wasn't right, so I filed the police report."
Bella handed her another tissue, when Ted came back obviously more resolved than before, Jacob grabbed the photos and put them back in the file and closed it.
"When Agent Black called, I knew then something in my heart telling me that they had found my daughter. I didn't want to be right but I knew." Diana collapsed in a chair.
"Mr. Tanner, do you know the name of the place your daughter worked?" Bella was hoping this would be the break she needed.
"Cullen Inc. She worked in the Marketing Department." Yes, something!
"I'm sorry, I just, I'm having a hard time processing it all. I remember she worked under the main guy there and the one below him. I can't remember their names." Ted held his head.
Diana's eyes got bright. "She mainly worked with Jasper Whitlock and Emmett McCarthy. But, the one at the top was Edward Cullen."
"That's very helpful, thank you." Bella said.
"When will we be able to bury our daughter?" Ted asked.
"Soon, I hope." I didn't know how long the Director would want to keep her body here, the others were kept for a week.
"Can I ask one more question?" Bella said. "I appreciate it."
"Yes, Agent Swan?" Diana said as she and Ted rose from the table
"You said she had an apartment in Chicago? Did she have one here?"
"Yes, but it was company owned, the one in Chicago we bought for her."
Hmm. Bella would definitely be making a trip to Cullen Inc. in the future.
"Thank you for your time. You have been very helpful. Please understand that nothing you have been told should be discussed outside this room." She could kick Jacob for telling them about how they didn't know how the blood was getting out.
"We wouldn't do anything to jeopardize our daughter's case, Agent."
Hours later
Bella stood up in front of the flashing cameras and shouting reporters as Mayor Peter Hale talked, Marcus beside him while Jacob was by her. This was a special news conference that had been put on since the public was in a frenzy.
"Mr. Mayor! Mr. Mayor!"
"Please. Hold all questions to the end. Agent Swan if you will?" Bella was shocked. She didn't know she was going to be in front of these people. She thought Marcus would be. She could tell by Marcus' face he wasn't happy he wasn't speaking.
Bella slowly made her way to the podium, all eyes on her. She was a good agent, a damn good one, but standing in front of a bunch of people gave her stage fright.
"Um," she gulped. "I'm Special Agent Isabella Swan. I'm the head of the case on the recent murders. This is my partner Agent Jacob Black. Yesterday, we found another body in the case, this was the fourth murder. The same characteristics were the same as the others, left in their underwear, loss of blood."
That's all Bella would say on the blood part. "All the victims have no connection to each other except the fact that Miss. Stanley and Miss. Myers attended the same University. The two didn't know each other according to their family and friends. They didn't run in social clubs either, or the same social circles. The last three victims all had brown hair and brown eyes while the first victim was blonde haired with blue eyes. The first three victim's murder is the same, however the fourth who has been identified was murdered more brutally. The last victim had evidence of being sexually assaulted. We still believe the first three victims were sexually assaulted as well, however we have no evidence. It should be noted that the target is females aged 21-30. Miss Martin was the oldest at 29 while Miss Myers was 21. Everyone should be aware of their surroundings, don't go alone anywhere if you can help it." Bella stepped away from the podium and then the questions began.
The mayor came up, calling silence to the room. "Yes, you there." The mayor pointed.
"Yes, James Hunter with the Daily News. My question is for Agent Swan. Should you be in charge of the case? I mean aren't you a potential victim as well? With your brown eyes and brown hair?" James smirked. Bella couldn't stand this guy, Every time something came up he always had something to say about her sex. Before she could answer, Marcus stood up to the microphone. "I can assure you, Agent Swan can handle herself. She is well trained, and I have faith in her." He smiled but Bella wanted to roll her eyes. What a suck up! More questions were asked but Bella tuned them out. They were mainly asked to Jacob and then Marcus. But Bella then wondered, could she be a potential victim? She was never worried before but should she be worried now?
Suddenly, she was brought out by the mayor speaking. "I'm enforcing a new curfew. No one should be out past 10pm. Try not to go alone. Employers should take this seriously, everyone should take this seriously."
Bella got out of her Nissan Murano Platinum SUV and walked to the elevator to get to her apartment. She had worked her butt off to get the car just when she was starting out. It was the first thing she got after her dad passed away a few years ago. When she opened her door, her phone rang. She pulled her cell out and hit the accept button without looking while she kicked her boots off.
"Hello."
"Hey, Bells!" It was Billy Black, Jacob's father and her father's old partner.
"Hey, Billy!" She walked to her fridge and pulled out a bottle of water.
"Just thought I would give you a call. I saw the conference." Her shoulders drooped of course he would call about that.
"Oh," she said and slammed the fridge door closed.
"You did good up there. I wanted to hit that reporter for you." Billy chuckled.
"Yeah, you aren't the only one." She sighed. She really wanted Billy to get on with whatever reason why he called. She was tired and ready to go to sleep.
"Seeing you up there reminded me of your dad." And… there it was. "Your old man would be proud of you." She heard him sniffle. Not only were they partners but best friends as well. They all used to hang out when they were younger.
"Yeah." Talking about Charlie was always a sore spot for Bella. Probably the only thing that made her show emotion. "Billy, I don't mean to be mean, but I'm tired. Could you get on with what you really want to say."
"Fine, you're so much like your old man it's crazy." She heard him mumble. "I'm worried about you, Bells. This whole brown eyes, brunette thing worries me. Should you let someone else take over? I know it's not how you roll. I was talking to Jacob and he agrees, it would probably be best to turn the case over to someone else." What the hell? Really? Now she was pissed.
"You talked to Jacob? Wow. So I'm guessing he told you about the cases then."
"No. No. He wouldn't do that. Just that he is worried about you," Billy stammered out
Bella sighed. "Billy, I'll be fine. I've had training, remember? Also, you and Dad taught me a lot as well. I've got this. I'm going to get these women justice." She finished but she was also annoyed.
"You're right, Bells. Can't blame an old man for being worried."
"Right. I'll talk to you later Billy."
"Later, Bells."
Bella hung up annoyed and tired. She would definitely be having words with Jacob tomorrow.
