Chapter 6

Another One

BELLA POV

I quickly jumped up from my bed when I heard banging somewhere in my apartment. What the hell? I put on some sweats and a shirt. I couldn't believe I had fallen asleep naked like that. I grabbed my phone that I had left on the table. Shit. I had missed calls and texts from Jacob and the deputy director. Shit.

I ran to my door, and opened it to find Jacob on the other side looking at me worriedly. I left the door open for him to come in, and walked to the kitchen with him behind me. I heard him close the door as I went to make myself a cup of coffee.

"Shit, Bella! I've been trying to reach you for hours!" he said while taking a cup from me after I poured it. Thank goodness for self-timer coffee machines.

"Sorry, Jacob. I think that painkiller really knocked me out," I said while I looked at him. He looked tense like something bad happened.

"What's wrong?" I said knowing exactly what he was about to say.

"There's another one," he said grimly.

After I had tied my hair into a tight bun, thrown my dress pants on, my suit jacket and blouse, I grabbed the file that contained Cullen's fight plans and we headed out the door. I drove this time because I wanted Jacob to read over the file along with ours that had the timeline of the girls deaths.

"So, it looks like Cullen is clear in three out of four deaths. He wasn't here for Stanley's, Myers, or Tanner's." I glanced at Jacob from the side while he looked at the file. "But Martin, he was in town."

"It's been established that all four victims were killed by the same person, Jacob." I huffed. I glanced again as it looked like he wanted to say more but didn't.

"Out with it," I said annoyed.

"Don't act like you didn't see the way he acted yesterday after you broke his vase," Jacob shouted.

"He yelled at me because I broke his vase." I knew what Jacob was referring to but I didn't want to accuse Edward right now. Something was telling me he was innocent.

"Oh come on, Bells, the man looked at you like he wanted to kill you. Do you not remember how angry he was?" Of course, I did. I also remembered his eyes, and how quick they changed colors.

"I think he was just a stuck up man who didn't like me breaking his things," I chuckled but honestly, I felt as if it wasn't Cullen. Not because I was sexually attracted to him, but because I just didn't feel as if it was. That didn't mean he wasn't guilty though. Even if I felt he didn't do it, I still thought he knew who did.

Jacob gave me a look but didn't comment. I decided to change the conversation, anything to get Edward Cullen off my mind.

"So, did Cap tell you anything about this body?"

"Other than some homeless person found it." Shit. "It was near the homeless camp by the river." Double shit. I hope someone saw something, but I had this feeling something was up.

Arriving at the scene was different than the others, this time a bunch of officers were there holding back homeless people as well as some news reporters. What the fuck? There were already news hounds here? Jacob and I walked towards the tape that was blocking the news crew.

"Agent Swan! Agent Black!" The words were said over and over again. " Can you tell me, is this body the same as the other victims?" Who the hell tipped them off? Someone had to because there was no way they could have heard about it this fast.

Both Jacob and I ignored them and walked under the tape. The officers blocking the crew nodded at me. I could see the body from a distance. It was sort of downhill by the river. I could see Angela from here.

I noticed the homeless camp near the river and the cops on that side however they seemed to be minding their business.

When we approached the body, I was taken aback. The victim was different from the last three. This one had black hair. She was wearing a pair of panties like the rest. Jacob and I looked at each other both wondering why this one's hair was different. Was the murderer changing victims?

I looked at Angela who looked sick but otherwise kept her composure when she looked at us approaching.

"You alright?" Jacob asked concerned. She nodded her head but I could tell she was lying.

"What have we got?" I started. I had an idea why she looked scared but maybe if I got her talking she wouldn't think about it.

"Same as the others, well so far. I didn't want to expose her here in front of everyone so I won't know about the sexual assault until I get back to lab. She has blue eyes." Angela breathed out and I looked at Angela's brown ones.

"I'm sorry I'm being completely unprofessional, it's just the hair, it's the exact shade of mine." She looked at me. I nodded. I understood where she was coming from, the other three victims had my features.

"Anything else?" I asked. Jacob didn't have his head in the game; he was staring at Angela like she was going to die or something.

"Angie." Angela snapped her head at Jacob and gave him a glare.

"Not here, Jake." She then turned to me. I noticed him gulp and I couldn't help but smirk.

"I need to get the body to the lab, I will get more answers there," Angela said now more in control.

I nodded. "Jacob and I are going to question the homeless person." She nodded and I headed to where there was a cop standing by two homeless men.

"Hello, I'm Special Agent Isabella Swan. This is my partner Agent Jacob Black."

"We didn't see nothin'," one of them shouted.

I ignored the statement. "Did one of you find the body?" I tried again.

The one that had been silent looked at me and nodded. The other one who had said they didn't see anything gave him a look.

"Don't you say nothing man," he slurred. It was obvious that the one yelling was drunk.

"What are your names?" I asked.

The shy one began to talk and was pushed back by the loud one. "We don't have to tell you shit," he laughed.

So either he was drunk or he knew something or both. I rolled my eyes. I tried to talk to both of them again but the loud one kept talking, acting like a fool. The shy one looked like he had something to say but looked afraid to say anything.

I ignored the drunk one and stared at the one who was silent. "So, did you see anything?"

The drunk one didn't like that. "Look Bitch," And then proceeded to hit me while I grabbed his arm and twisted it back. I saw Jacob grab his handcuffs and cuff him. "Fucking bitch! "the man screamed. I pushed him towards the officer. "Get him back to the station and book him for assaulting an officer," I yelled.

The officer dragged him away, and I turned back to the other man. "What's your name?"

"Quillll mammm." He was nervous, that much was apparent.

"Quil, did you see anyone?" I asked, getting frustrated not at the shy man named Quil but with that douche that tried to hit me.

"No, some pretty man dropped the body off."

"Pretty man?" I questioned.

"Yeah, you know, nice suit, hair slicked back rich type." I nodded. Jacob gave me a look but I didn't return it. I know what he was implying but Edward's hair was a bronze mess sticking up every which way. I pulled out my phone and went through some pictures from Forbes and online. Cullen was a popular man. I'm sure Quil would recognize him. I found one and showed it to him.

"This him?"

Quil studied it and then looked at me. "No, not him."

"Hmm." I heard Jacob sigh beside me.

"I've seen him before on the TV when we had it," he said then looked sad. "My brother"

"Your brother?"

Quil looked at me then. "Yes, my brother, the one that tried to hit you."

I nodded. "When will he come back? I don't do good without him."

Well, that made sense, why he was answering the questions. Maybe something was mentally wrong with Quil?

I felt awful for him. "You can ride back with us to the station okay?"

He smiled then frowned. "I'm sorry, If I saw him I would tell you. I only saw the man from the side." I nodded. I wasn't supposed to do this but hopefully I could get some information from his brother.

"What's your last name Quil?" I asked as we walked back to my car.

"Lahote."

******TDOS****

The deputy director had been screaming at us for about twenty minutes now. The three of us were in his office. I was annoyed when all I wanted to do was go question Quil's brother and find anything out from Angela. I think Jacob was too because he seemed restless as well.

"Then you didn't answer your phone," Marcus went on saying. "Those reporters..."

I sighed. So he was blaming me for all the news people being there. It wasn't my fault, someone had definitely tipped them off. The TV played in the background and was cut to a special news report. Marcus quit talking as all three of us looked at the TV. I could see the homeless camp in the back. Shit.

"Another body was found today. We do have confirmation of Agents Swan and Black at the scene, so it would be confirmed that another woman can be added to the growing list of victims."

I hated journalists, reporters, anyone in that profession, they were a bunch of savages.

"However, it does seem they may have a suspect." What the hell? Both Jacob and I stared at each other in confusion.

"A homeless man was arrested today, it looks like he tried to hit Agent Swan but he is not confirmed if he is a part of the murders." I jumped up, how the hell did they see that? Then they showed a clip of Quil's brother in the background.

Someone let them in, there was no way they could see that without being close to the homeless camp. I was livid and even more so when the report went off and Marcus turned back to me.

He was a picture of calm now and I didn't know if I should be worried or not.

"Swan, you're one of my best agents," he said calmly then I watched his face go red as he began to shout, "so how the hell did they see that?" He pointed to the screen.

"I don't know!" I shouted back "They were behind the tape when we entered to the scene."

Jacob nodded, "yes sir they were."

"Then how did they get that?" He pointed to the screen

I remained silent, I wouldn't give him any ammo to yell at me right now.

"What about Cullen?" The captain changed his questioning.

"Seems clear." I said. Jacob nodded.

"Seems?" Cap asked me.

"He wasn't in town for three of the four murders," I finished.

"It's very clear this is the same murderer for all four," Jacob said.

Marcus rocked back into his seat and held his head. "So, you two are back at square one then?"

I didn't want to nod my head, I had had enough of failure here lately. But, he was right, we were back at square one.

"There is still the body we need to see Dr. Weber about and to question the Lahote brother," Jacob said

Before Marcus could say anything, his phone rang. "Shit." He looked at us. "It's the mayor, you're dismissed."

Both Jacob and I were more than happy to leave.

*****TDOS*******

We entered the cold room where Angela was working. She had a file in her hand. It seemed like we just did this, I had to tell myself that we just did. I studied Angela. She seemed to be better than earlier.

"What do you have?" I asked her.

"So, you'll know that this one is different from the others." she started.

"Different how?" I asked

"I thought something was up when I first approached the body and noticed it was warmer than the others." I kept my eyes on her as she walked towards the body and dropped the sheet.

"She still had blood in her body, and I found where it was drawn from." Angela then moved her leg and there on her inner thigh was definitely a draw site. It was awful like whoever had done this didn't know what they were doing.

"She was raped and I found semen in her vagina. I have already sent it in to see if we get any hits in the system."

This was the first one where semen had been found.

"No broken bones. I haven't determined the cause of death yet but off the record it may be blood loss," she finished.

Something didn't add up. Everything just changed with this victim, the preference and the style? Could this be a copycat?

"But I did find something interesting that I didn't notice before." I quickly looked at her while she placed the pictures down of the last four victims. "Look at their necks on both sides."

I looked at them closely but didn't see anything at first. I handed some pictures to Jacob and he looked confused until I saw it on Bree Tanner's neck. There on her skin was a place that was much lighter than the other side. It looked like she could have had a skin condition. It was on the right side, a shade lighter than her skin. All the other girls had one as well on the right side. The left side didn't match.

I looked at the woman on the table. She didn't have one on either side.

"I only noticed it because the woman on the table has darker skin than the other ones. It would have definitely showed up if she had one." I kept looking at the pictures. It was true, you could barely see Gianna's. She was so pale skinned. This new death was beginning to look like a copycat.

"Keep us updated if you find anything else," I told her.

"Oh, trust me I'm going back to look through my files, and everything to make sure I didn't miss anything," Angela said looking more relaxed.

"Jacob, take a picture and give it to Jared. Maybe he will get a hit or something. I'm going to question Lahote."

****TDOS*****

I looked through the mirror at Paul Lahote who was sitting at the table in the interrogation room. Yes, after he was booked we found out who he was. He had been in and out of jail since he was 19. Most of the charges were stealing but he also had one assault.

Life hadn't been great for those two young men. I even felt sorry for them. Paul and Quil had been on their own for a while now. It was just sad that they had no one and they eventually became homeless. Paul had his head in his hands, his eyes were bloodshot, his hair pulled in every direction. I felt pity and knew in my heart he didn't kill anyone but she needed answers and she felt Paul knew who Quil was talking about when he said "Pretty Boy."

I entered the room and Paul shot me a look before he changed his gaze to the wall behind me. I sat down and pulled open the folder I had of him that had all his past crimes. I kept looking at him and he still refused to look my way.

"Mr. Lahote?"

Silence.

"Well, I'll just talk then."

He didn't budge and kept his gaze away from me.

"So, it looks like you have had an eventful childhood. Caught stealing at 16 but the judge dismissed it because he wanted to give you another chance and then you assaulted an orderly at 19 after your parents died." I noticed the slight tremor and that seemed to bother him speaking of his parents. "Then you were placed in jail after that for robbery many times." He actually had been in jail five more times since then, the most recent being a month ago. I

also noted that Paul was now 21 and Quil 20. So young.

"How else was I going to feed my brother?" he said in a rough voice. "No one gives a shit about us homeless people."

It was sad but true. Only a few centers around the city could help them but he was right it did seem like no one cared. I did. I wished I was rich enough to help every homeless, poor person around but I wasn't. The mayor needed to do something about that instead of worrying about my case.

"I'm sorry about tha—" I started

"What do you want bitch!" he said now, his attention on me.

I ignored his outburst. "Answers."

"I don't have any answers."

"I think you do. Your brother said..

He cut me off, "my brother doesn't know what he's talking about."

"Paul, I think you know who Pretty Boy is that your brother spoke of," I just said it. I was done cutting through all the bullshit. I noticed Paul had frozen but he shook his head and stared at the place on the wall.

Back to the silent treatment. I also wondered why he hadn't asked for a lawyer, knowing he couldn't possibly afford one but still.

"Look, I'll drop any charges against you for trying to hit me earlier, if you just give me something." I knew that could cost me my job but I was desperate for answers. I also felt bad for both brothers. Life had not been kind to them.

He chuckled, "wow, anything huh?"

I didn't like his tone, but he seemed like he was searching for something.

"Obviously the truth, Paul."

He huffed. "That's the problem with you people. You think you can just do whatever to get your way. Throw around a few bucks or say something to make us folks cave," he lashed out.

I huffed out a breath. "You're right, some people do that. I'm not like that. I want to find the people that did this to these poor women. I know you had nothing to do with the killings but I think you know who did."

He stared at me in shock, but then shook his head and looked away from me.

"Paul, I actually do care about people. I know with everything that happened with you, you probably don't believe that but there are some people that really do care."

"Bullshit," he said. "You're a cop, an agent, whatever you are, you don't give a fuck."

I knew he was acting out due to his past. "Not all of us are bad."

He looked at me again but shook his head. " Bullshit, I had to steal food because my mother was dying of cancer and lying in bed and my father forgot about us because he was devoted to her. Then they both end up dying In a car crash. Then those fuckboys in suits wanted to put my brother in a ward because he isn't "normal"." Paul uses his fingers as air quotes. "So I assaulted them and they put Quil away anyway," he huffed. He looks hurt. I could barely see it but I do see a glint of sadness In his eyes.

"Then, when he ages out and I finally get him back we have to live off the streets because no one cares about people like us, so I have to steal food and money for us to live."

"Where was Quil when you were in jail the past few times?" I asked.

"With a friend. He only stays there when I'm not around."

"A friend?" If Paul trusted this friend enough to keep an eye on Quil, why were they living in a homeless camp?

"A friend," he said coldly.

I leaned back in my chair. Paul looked at me head on. Could his friend have something to do with what was going on?

"So no, Agent Swan, I don't trust cops. I only trust my brother so I won't tell you anything."

I was a little annoyed. However, I knew coming in here I probably wouldn't get any answers. I firmly believed Paul knew who was behind the murders or at least this copycat one. I don't know why but I had a feeling this victim wasn't a part of the others. Could I prove that?

"Your brother is here," I said and Paul looked at me in shock. "I'll let him come in and talk to you," I said, rising up. I was already going to drop any charges against him anyways. Technically, he didn't hit me. He was mainly brought in because he was a person of interest. I didn't have anything to hold him with anyway. The door opened and it was Jacob. He looked serious.

"Agent Swan, could I have a word?" Jacob said. I knew something had gone down, Jacob's face was hard as stone. I nodded and followed Jacob out of the room and shut the door behind me.

"What?" Her heart started beating fast and she didn't know why.

"We got a positive ID on the vic." Wow, that was fast. "She was reported missing this morning by her husband," Jacob finished.

"How long has she been missing?" I said.

"Since yesterday. He filed it this morning but you know we can't do anything until it's been 48 hours."

I hated that especially with all these murders of women at the moment. It felt stupid that any missing report of a woman wasn't being taken seriously.

"Why do you look like that Jacob?"

"After Jared ID'd the victim, I contacted her husband. Her name is Carmen Sanchez," Jacob said, his face still not moving from that hard stare.

"He's coming to ID the body but the picture he sent me looked exactly like her."

It still didn't make sense why he looked like that.

"You gonna tell me why you look like that?"

He shook his head. "If it's the same person which, if I'm like 100% sure it is, then that puts us back in Cullen's terrority."

What did Edward Cullen have to do with this? Now I was thinking of him again. Shit! Focus Bella.

"What do you mean?" I said hoarsely. I hoped Jacob didn't catch the change in my voice.

"Carmen was Secretary to Jasper Whitlock."

Well, shit.
