Chapter 8

Chicago

Bella POV

Getting off the plane on a crisp Chicago morning was divine. I made sure my carry-on bag was secure on my shoulder before stepping off the FBI plane. A man in similar attire as mine, waited at the bottom of the steps.

"Special Agent Swan?" he called as he held his hand out for me to shake. I took his hand in mine and shook it back.

"You must be Agent Throne?"

"You can call me Alistair."

I simply smiled. He would be Agent Throne, I didn't call fellow Agents by their first names unless we were close. It kept a fine line between being professional and personal.

"So, your captain said you're coming out here to look at Tanner's apartment?"

I nodded. "It was more like a courtesy call, Agent Throne. I have already received permission from her parents anyway."

Bree's parents had been nothing but supportive and were doing anything they could to help find her killer.

Throne smiled at me, "I've personally done a run through her apartment after we got the call from your office. I can assure you, Agent Swan, we didn't find anything."

I gave him my best fuck you smile, I don't know what it was with men lately.

"Be that as it may, you were probably looking for evidence for a crime, no crime happened in that apartment that we know of," I added as an afterthought. "I'm looking for details in that apartment that may lead me to her death in my city. Details that you may have missed."

"I'm very thorough, Agent Swan." He gave me a grim smile.

I took off my sunglasses and stared at him again. "I'm not saying you aren't, Agent Throne."

"It'll take a few days to get a warrant," he kept saying. Must be a junior agent.

"The apartment was bought by her parents who have given me permission to investigate it so I don't need a search warrant." I put my sunglasses back on.

"Very well," he said as he showed me to a dark sedan. He opened the back door and I climbed in. He then sat beside me on the other side. A driver was in the front, and Throne told him to take us to the FBI Headquarters.

I shook my head and told the driver the address that Ted Tanner had given me last night on the phone.

Agent Throne was red in the face, "Agent Swan, are you sure you don't want to go to headquarters to be debriefed?"

"I don't need to be debriefed Agent Throne, this is my case. I know everything there is to know at this point. I've already examined your initial search and you found no evidence of a crime. That's because there wasn't one in her apartment. Now, I'm going to do a search, and I'm more than hopeful I'll find something," I said with finality. Throne and every other man I had been around so far had pissed me off lately with comments about my inability to progress this case, even Jacob who I left behind to stay on the case back home.

Throne didn't utter another word, and I was so grateful for that. It gave me a chance to think about everything going on.

It had been a week since I talked to Whitlock, had that strange encounter with Heidi and saw him..

His sparkling eyes, the way he looked at me lustfully. I had to shake those thoughts and stay focused.

The case of course had stopped at a standstill, Paul had been released, no more killings had occurred which was the good thing but I also hadn't made any progress. A few days ago it hit me and I felt stupid that I just remembered. We hadn't searched the apartment that Bree lived in New York. Although, all of her stuff had been removed before her death so really it was moot at this point since she had been let go from Cullen Inc. Then I forgot about the apartment here in Chicago. It had been searched of course but with no findings. Something was telling me I was missing something, so I called Mrs. Tanner and asked if I could see Bree's Chicago apartment. Bree's body had also been flown back a couple of days ago and she had been buried a day ago.

I wished I could have just silently come in and searched without getting Chicago's Division involved but alas, that's not how it worked.

The closer we got to the apartment building, the closer I realized that I may find some answers. I was really hoping I would. I needed them and this was my last option at this point.

Pulling up to the building, I quickly got out taking my bag with me. Agent Throne getting out as well.

"Well, thanks for the ride, Agent Throne. I have it from here."

"Agent Swan, I'm more than happy to accompany you," he said as I held my hand up.

"That won't be necessary, I have it handled," I said bluntly, I didn't need this junior agent breathing down my neck. He wasn't my partner and I wasn't going to deal with someone that may mess things up for me.

"Okay, I'll wait here and give you a ride to your hotel?" What was with him?

"Again not necessary, I won't be staying at a hotel." I smiled at him even though inside I was raging.

"Well, you'll need a ride to the—" I quickly interrupted him, "I'll take a cab. Thank you Agent Throne, have a good day."

I turned from him and walked towards the building rolling my eyes in the process. I was a big girl and I could handle myself.

After I entered the glass double doors, I went to the desk, Mr. Tanner said he would tell the security at the desk to give me the key he left. After telling the security guard my name and showing my badge he let me up.

The apartment Bree lived in was closed off still. I put the key in the hole, and turned the knob.

I sat my bag down by the door, before looking around. The place looked clean, everything seemed to be in its place. I pulled the file from Agent's Throne's search. They scrubbed for fingerprints, took hair samples from her bed and bathroom. Sigh. That was the problem: they were searching for a crime scene and not getting personal.

I looked around the space. The living room was very nicely done; there were a few pictures of Bree and her parents on the shelves, and some from her graduation. I put my gloves on from my pocket.

I searched every cabinet, and saw some old bills in a drawer. Found some old pay stubs from Cullen Inc. I ended up taking those and putting them in my bag. I made my way to her bedroom and took it in. It was decorated of course, with a very feminine touch. I went to her bedside table, nothing was in here except a bible and a few papers which of course I took with me.

I got up from searching through the bedside table and exited the bedroom. I headed to the spare bedroom which opened up into an office. I read the report that was still in my hands. Her computer had been searched but nothing came up. I turned it on anyway. I went through her documents and pictures she had on there. She actually had a few of her at what looked like a company Christmas party.

There was one of her and Rosalie Hale dressed to the nines and everything. They looked put together. I looked through them some more, and noticed Bree distracted in one. I don't know what she was looking at but she looked scared. I kept clicking. There was one of her, Jasper Whitlock, Rosalie Hale, some big burly man, and Carmen Sanchez. They were all smiling, but Bree was looking far off. Who was she looking at?

I pulled out a flash drive, and decided to copy files from her computer. What I actually was doing was wrong but something was telling me to. I quickly got up, and heard a door closing. I was quickly on alert. I quickly took the flash drive and put it in my pocket.

Pulling my gun from my holster, I quietly made my way to the door and held it up as it opened. Both Agent Throne and I stared at each other with our guns raised.

"I thought you left," I said, hoisting my gun back.

"I didn't want to leave you alone," he said doing the same.

" Agent Throne, I told you I didn't need your assistance." I said. I was infuriated.

I made my way to the door and made sure Agent Throne followed me. After he walked out, I made sure the door was locked. I would have to come back later without prying eyes.

"I have orders from my captain, Agent Swan, to escort you to FBI headquarters."

I rolled my eyes. So he called his captain. Fucking bullshit.

"Fine! Let's go!" I huffed as I followed him out of the building.
