Chapter 13
Going Back
BELLA POV
I lifted my arms above my shoulders until I heard a pop. "Ahh!" I had too much tension in my shoulders and neck at the moment. I had been sitting here with poor Jacob who I felt wasn't entirely over his sickness. I hoped he was because I really didn't need to be around him if he wasn't. I hadn't told him or anyone about my little miracle. It's not that I was ashamed but I knew I would get questions about who the father was and what I was going to do. The one thing they would say is that it's too dangerous to be on this case with me being pregnant. So, for now I would just stay quiet.
Speaking of the father, it has been three days since I last spoke to him and when the bed had been dropped off. It was probably my fault though since I never responded to his text. I have never been good with men and relationships. I still thought about his card that said "I'm in". What did that mean? He was "in" to be a father? I don't know, I'm still confused.
"Ugh." I heard Jacob say beside me.
I turned towards him with an eyebrow raised. "You okay?" He didn't look okay but he didn't say anything. "Maybe you should go home?" I said, giving him a sad smile.
"No, I'm fine. Just need some water." He got up and made his way to the mini fridge we have in the corner. I smirked. Jacob was so stubborn.
Once he sat back down in his chair, I gave him the Martin file. "I feel like we should go back over this one. Start over on all of them to see if we are missing something."
He nodded. "I agree. We weren't on the case when Martin died. Something could have been missed."
We had been handed the case a week after the Myers and Stanley bodies had been found. I always wanted to go back to the Martin's case but with the pile of bodies adding up each week it was sort of hard to. I still hadn't had a chance to read Bree's diary. I hated myself for it because I felt like I would get my answers in there.
"I feel like we should start with the crime scene, then hit up her boyfriend's house," I started.
Jacob nodded. The boyfriend had been interviewed by the local police and we had a copy of what was said. He wasn't even in town the day of the murder but when you're usually asked again you may find something new.
We headed for my Government issued Tahoe. I drove, of course. Jacob was hacking into a tissue in the passenger side.
"Are you sure you're okay?" I asked him again. I really think he shouldn't have come back today but I'm not his mother and I can't tell him what to do.
"Yeah, it's just leftovers." I shook my head. Men were so stubborn. I don't even think Angela had come back but since I haven't been down to where her office is I wasn't entirely sure.
"Has Angela come back yet?" I asked, turning onto the street near where Gianna died.
"No, not yet. I think she got the worst of it." He then turned to look back on the street. "You haven't told anyone about us have you?" He turned to look at me and I glanced at him before turning my attention back to the road.
"No, I don't gossip, you know that," I smiled. "Besides, you're my best friend and I wouldn't do that to you."
He gave me a smile. "I really care for her." I nodded, regretting what I was about to ask.
"It was just sex in the beginning, right?" I blurted. "Sorry if that's forward," I quickly added.
Jacob's cheeks were red from embarrassment. "It was, but things have grown between us. I feel like she'll be my wife someday." He smiled when he said that.
"That's good, I hope so. You guys seem really happy with each other," I said. I parked the vehicle a few spaces away from the alleyway.
"Why the question, Bells?" he asked and I knew he wouldn't drop it.
"Just curious, I guess." He raised his eyebrow like he didn't believe me but I opened the door and climbed out of the vehicle avoiding any further questions.
I walked a few paces forward and I heard Jacob behind me. As we walked closer to the spot her body had been, I noticed little crosses and "In Memory" signs about her placed throughout. "Damn," I muttered as I made my way to the spot. There had been roses placed where her body laid. It was a sad sight and seriously I felt a chill in my bones.
I looked around at the ground for anything out of place. I also took notice of the building near the alley.
"According to the notes, that building holds two businesses. A worker had come in for the day and opened their office window and saw the body," I said while remembering what had been written on the file in my head.
Jacob nodded, "it amazes me that you can remember word for word what someone said or wrote." He gave me a grin
Everyone in the building had been questioned and no one had seen anything suspicious. A park was also nearby but there was no way to know who was there at night. It had been empty when the body had been found. It was a convenient spot to lay a body no doubt. "So, in the case file, they were sure she wasn't killed here. I agree. She was killed somewhere else and the body was brought here," I said, walking around the scene. "Why here though?" I mainly said to myself. Jacob didn't comment knowing I do that sometimes. "The park that was nearby was a dog park." I stopped moving and looked at Jacob whose face was eerily stillp. "You think they meant for the body to be found? I mean a dog would definitely smell something." He had an eyebrow raised, I think he was debating on whether or not that was a stupid question. "Of course they did, Jacob. She was left in the open, the same as the others." Whoever killed the women was a fucking psycho, leaving their bodies in the open, naked except a pair of panties, was deranged. It then hit me what I think Jacob was hinting at. Why place a body near a dog park and an office building if the killer didn't want it to be found? Did he or she feel remorse for their actions? Or were they some sick fuck who wanted everyone to see what they did? "I think we should visit the boyfriend now," I told Jacob as I made my way towards my SUV.
As I pulled back onto the road Jacob turned towards me. "Tell me what is going on in that head of yours. I can see the wheels rolling," he chuckled.
"I was thinking about what you said about leaving the body in the open. Remorse or pride?"
Jacob nodded. "I think pride, Bells. She was the first that we know of," he added. "If she wasn't the first then it was the killer's first that they had perfected. That's why I think he did it three more times because he finally got it right with Martin." He gulped, "if there was any before her we haven't found or linked it to the same killer." He then changed his expression into a grim one. "I think the real question is was it an accident or on purpose?"
I stopped at the red light. "Definitely on purpose. He continued on killing the same way until Carmen."
"I agree with you on that. I think Carmen was killed by a copycat," Jacob said as I nodded and drove on once the light changed green.
Our boss wasn't in agreement with us though. He kept putting Carmen as the fifth victim. It just didn't make any sense for her to be in the same bunch as the others. The first four, like Jacob said, were too perfect and then the killer suddenly gets sloppy with the fifth victim?
The public was not aware of the whole body being devoid of blood which is why I thought of it being a copycat killing since Carmen still had blood in her body. We also know Carmen wasn't killed at the homeless camp but brought there.
My mouth dropped and my eyes went wide. "Do you think it was a copycat or did the killer go sloppy on purpose?"
Jacob looked thoughtful. "You mean the killer is playing a game with us?" I nodded.
"Or wanting to be found," I added.
"I don't know about that, Bells. I think it's a game."
"Don't you find it odd that whoever dropped off the body let Paul and Quil see him?" I said frustrated. It wasn't Jacob but whenever I thought of Quil I felt bad. I still hadn't located him and I hoped he was okay.
"That's why I think it's a game, Bells. He drops the body off at a homeless camp because he probably wanted to blame them or he knew no one would believe a homeless person," Jacob said equally frustrated.
I think we both had valid points. However, I felt Jacob wasn't looking at all aspects of this case. "I would have," I said softly. "I did."
Jacob turned to me and his face went from grim to remorse. "You can't keep blaming yourself for Quil." I parked the car near the apartment building where Gianna and her boyfriend lived. "I do though, Jacob. I shouldn't have let Paul go." We sat in silence for a minute. I think we both needed it. After I took a few breaths, I climbed out of the car and made my way into the building with Jacob behind me.
Gianna and her boyfriend, Afton I believe, lived in Tribeca, one of the richest neighborhoods. We had some of Gianna's background history. She was definitely a socialite living off her dead father's money. She had all social media accounts including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. However nothing on them indicated anything related to her death.
Jacob raised his eyebrow, "whoo. I wonder how much you have to drop to live here?" I rolled my eyes at him and told him to knock on the door.
After about three knocks a young man opened it. He had light brown hair and blue eyes. "Can I help you?" he said in a gruff but low voice. I noticed a bunch of moving boxes behind him.
"Yes, I'm Detective Swan. This is Detective Black." We flashed our badges. "Are you Afton?" He nodded. "May we come in? We have a few questions," I inquired.
He took a breath, "is this about Gigi?"
Jacob and I looked at each other. "Yes," I said in a soft tone.
He left the door open and walked back into the apartment. Jacob and I slowly walked in. It was a really nice apartment. Rich colors were on the walls with very expensive leather couches and chairs that looked like it would cost me a year's salary. Moving boxes were scattered around the living room floor.
"You can sit here if you like." He pointed to one of the couches. Jacob and I nodded and sat down while he sat down in a chair beside us.
"Are you moving?" I looked around at the boxes.
He scratched his hair. "Yes, I'm moving back in with my parents for a bit." I nodded. "I really can't afford this apartment anyways," he added.
"Too much on your salary?" Jacob asked and I shot him a glare. "Sorry about that," Jacob said as he looked remorseful.
"I mean it's true. I can't." He waved his arm. "Just before he died, Gigi's dad had paid the rent for this place for a year. That'll run out in a few weeks so I'm trying to get out of here before then." I nodded as I wrote it down on the pad. I was going to check the lease when I got back to the office.
"I know you didn't come here to ask about my moving plans." He let out a light chuckle but I could tell it was forced.
I smiled back. "No, we didn't. So Detective Black and I were not on the case when Gianna died. We would like to ask you a few questions, maybe see if there was something you forgot to say. Gianna's daily routine, anything small could help."
"I said all I could think of at the time," Afton finished. It was clearly not a conversation he wanted to have but we really needed something to help.
"Sometimes when something horrific happens the mind has trouble processing the situation. There could be something you forgot to say a few months ago," I inquired.
"Like what Detective?" he said annoyed. I know he didn't want to hash this out but I needed something to try to get this case to progress.
"I understand you were out of town the day she was murdered." He nodded. "Did you know her plans for that day?"
Afton let out a loud breath and pulled his hair. "She always woke up super early to run. Then she would come back and take a shower and head to the coffee shop near the University." I knew that coffee shop he was talking about because I sometimes popped in when I was nearby. All of their coffee was hand-brewed so whenever I was close I would get some.
"That's a few minutes out of the way, why there?" He let out a small sigh. "You may think this sounds crazy but.." he swallowed. "Gianna never went to college. I don't know why but she didn't. I guess she would rather live off of her father's money. It was a subject neither she nor I agreed on."
"Agreed like you fought about it?" Jacob inquired. I rolled my eyes at him. I swear if he kept on I was going to have to pull rank. I don't know what was going on but it was like everyone we talked to he was hell-bent on blaming them.
"Yes, we fussed about it. I thought she wasn't living up to her potential and she didn't see the point because she had everything she wanted." I nodded and wrote a note in my pad. "Anyways, she liked to think of herself as one of them. She would join marches, um, we crashed a frat party once." He let out an embarrassed grin. "She liked to hang out at that coffee shop for some reason, maybe it was because it was full of students." I nodded. He was right, it was but like I said it was the best coffee around.
"She did that almost every day but that day," he took a breath. "She went shopping, she didn't need any more clothes but she wouldn't listen to me. It was like she was always in competition with someone on the street about something. If they had better clothes she had to have better clothes." He rolled his eyes at the statement.
"Do you remember her movements that night? Did she tell you anything?" I asked.
"She wanted to go to a frat party. We talked about visiting my parents and going away together on vacation."
"A frat party?" Jacob asked.
"Yeah, we crashed a lot of them. She liked to live it up. We usually went to a few."
"Any one of them in particular?"
"Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Epsilon Phi." He let out another embarrassed sigh. "I actually think one of the leaders of the sorority house died about a week after Gianna did." Jacob and I turned to each other.
He was right. Jessica Stanley was the leader of the Sorority House of Alpha Epsilon Phi. Could that be the connection? Did Afton not know about them both being killed by the same person? Both of those names had been released to the public. Did he really not know?
"Why not nightclubs? Why the sorority houses?" Jacob asked.
"Like I said, she liked to live it up. I guess it made her feel young." I nodded. "I guess it made her feel smarter or something I don't know," he added.
"What do you mean by that?" There was so much going on in my brain at the moment. I felt like I had something but it also could be something else.
"I told you we butted heads about school. Well, it was more than that. She didn't feel like she was smart enough for college."
"So she liked being the party girl?" Jacob asked. I gasped. I swear Jacob Black was walking on a thin line with me.
"I guess I get what you mean by that," he continued. I could tell he didn't like Jacob's questioning and he wasn't alone. "She wasn't fucking other men if that's what you're getting at." He teared up and gave a glare in Jacob's direction. He had the audacity to look embarrassed but I knew better.
"I'll apologize on my partner's behalf, that was uncalled for." I flipped a page in my note pad. "So according to what you told the officers, you were at an art show in Cleveland when she was murdered? Is that correct?"
He sighed. "Yes," he replied. "I got a call the next morning right when I arrived in town. I hadn't heard from her after 10 p.m. the night before. I was worried."
I nodded sadly. His alibi had been cleared though and there was evidence of his flight. "Where did you go after the murder?"
"To my parent's house, I actually have been there since the murder. I came back a few days ago to pack. I'm actually moving back home and staying near them," he said with a sad smile.
"Where do they live?" Jacob asked.
"Montauk," he answered with a grimace. He was obviously put off with Jacob. I tried to hide the smile that was trying to come up on my face. "If you need evidence I was there, I can get that too. I know my parents will provide you anything as well."
"It's fine, if you want to send it to me you can but I didn't come here to question you as if you were a suspect," I said standing up.
"I'm glad one of you didn't." He stood up to shake my hand. Jacob pulled his hair a bit before he mumbled, "my apologies."
"Thank you for your time, Mr. Daniels. Can I ask what you will do with Miss. Martin's things?"
"I'm taking some of it and donating the rest," he said sadly.
I nodded. "Thanks again, Mr. Daniels."
After we left the apartment, I walked to my SUV leaving Jacob behind. I was so furious, how fucking dare he?
I slammed my door and turned the engine on. I could drive off and leave his ass here but I'm not that petty. I looked straight out the windshield while I heard the passenger door close. It was silent for a bit. I took a few breaths to calm myself, reminding myself I didn't need to get too worked up.
I turned to look at him. I think he knew I was about to go off because he looked ready for it. "What possessed you to say that? We already knew he wasn't in town!" I all but screamed in the car.
"I just wanted to get to the bottom of things!" Jacob countered back.
"You had no right to say what you did!" Now, I was red in the face. "I'm the head Detective on this case, Jacob! I'm in charge!" I yelled. Welp! So much for staying calm.
It was quiet after that. I don't know how long we sat there but it felt like hours.
"Look, I'm sorry, you're right. I shouldn't have done that. It's just the Cap has been on my ass about this. He thinks we're getting nowhere. Bells, please don't say anything but he wants you off the case. He thinks you're in danger," Jacob said remorsefully.
I swear I saw red. "What the fuck!" I yelled. "Is that what you want, Jacob? Me off this case?" I looked at him and suddenly regretted my actions from earlier about leaving his ass here.
"Of course not! I just worry but I've already told you this." He waved his hand.
I took some calming breaths. "Look, we both can't stand the Cap, right?" He nodded. "So, can you trust me and not worry about what he says and keep things between us. We only tell him the bare minimum right now?" I asked. "Until we find out answers?"
"Of course, Bells. I'm sorry. I will try to do better," Jacob huffed out a breath. "So do you want to head to the Sorority house and scope the place out?"
I nodded but then my stomach hurt. "Let's eat first."
Jacob chuckled as I pulled away from the curb. "Yeah, let's." Maybe we would be okay or maybe not. I would definitely watch him. Why would the Cap be worried about me? I've solved every case I've had so far so why me
