Chapter 14 Dinner

Jacob and I ate in my SUV as we looked out at the Sorority House. I was sipping soup through the cup while he ate his sub. "So, what's the plan?" He said in between bites. I wanted to go inside and talk to whoever I needed to, but would they talk to me?

After Stanley and Myers' bodies had been found and a few days they were linked to Martin's due to the nature of the bodies we had been put on the case. We had talked to Charlotte's family, and of course some of her friends. They were adamant that Charlotte didn't know Jessica. Apparently, Charlotte was a nerd and didn't associate herself with Jessica's crew.

So why had both of them been found not far from each other? Was the killer after one of them and the other was in the wrong place at the time? The case file from the officer's report said Charlotte's body had been found close to an apartment building which was near Jessica's. However, according to Charlotte's parents she lived in a dorm not an apartment so why was she so far away?

Why didn't Jessica live in the Sorority House? Why did she have an apartment? That part didn't make sense to me. She was head of the house she should have been living there. I looked at Jacob whose question I forgot to answer. "I don't know let's go talk to the head girl now see if she knew Jessica."

We both got out the SUV and made our way to the huge house that held Alpha Epsilon Phi. We knocked on the huge door before a young blonde opened it. She looked at us confused before her face turned into one of anger.

"Oh no, not another reporter! I'm supposed to call the Associate Dean if you won't leave! So leave!" I was taken back for a minute. "I'm not a reporter, I'm an Agent." I flashed her my badge and her face relaxed a bit before she opened the door wider for us to come in.

"Sorry about that, they have been annoying lately. Showing up whenever wanting to ask questions."

I gave her a small smile. "I'm looking for the Head Girl now. Is she here?" The young one in front of me nodded. "Stay here though let me go see if she will see you" She was off before I could even say okay.

This place was huge, there was a massive staircase off to the side. There were a few girls giving us curious glances, but they looked like they were getting ready for a party. There were pictures of Jessica up as well.

"Agent, she will see you." I nodded and walked to a door that had been left opened. Walking through I was in a huge living room. There was a blonde girl there, putting up balloons and streamers. "You must be Agent Swan." She said as she came over. "Do I need to get the Dean?" I looked at Jacob who looked at me with a confused look.

"I just want to ask a few questions." I then gave her a pointed look. "You can if you want, and you called me Agent Swan." The girl in front of me then looked at me confused. "I didn't give my name."

"I've been following the case." The girl looked sheepish. "I know who you are."

"Ahh." I nodded.

"Yes, I'll answer what I can. I know if I don't want to answer something I don't have to." She smiled. "Because I'm not formally under arrest or have a lawyer present." She added.

I nodded. "That's correct. However, no one here is a suspect. Were just trying to see if we missed anything. We came on this case right after Miss Stanley and Miss. Myers bodies had been found."

"Well, I'll try to answer what I can." She smiled.

"What's your name?" I asked.

"Lauren Mallory." She replied. "I'm a criminal justice major." She added.

I wrote in my pad and nodded. "Could you give me any details about Jessica? Anything to help? Her movements?"

"Well, I worked under her since she was Head. The night she died; it was pledge night." I remember vaguely that was in one of the officer's notes. It didn't make sense though that Jessica wasn't here that night.

"Pledge night is a busy night, right?" I inquired.

"Yes, but Jess never took it seriously."

"What do you mean by that?" Jacob asked and I nodded.

"She was the head she was supposed to oversee all pledges. But Jess would have rather get drunk and party then do that." She huffed. "She delegated all that to me and I made sure it was done." I nodded writing.

"Did you inform the Dean?" I asked.

"Not that they cared then but no. This was a matter us girls in this house would have to solve." She huffed and went red. "We all loved Jess, don't get me wrong. She just didn't take the job seriously."

She had a sad smile "I had actually started to petition for her to be removed as Head girl right before she was murdered."

My brows rose. I was not suspect of Lauren at all. It all sounded like a little squabble to me anyways.

"Did she have a room here? Do you know why she had a separate apartment?"

Lauren waved her manicure hand. "She had the apartment when she first came here. She did have a room here, but it was all for show. She never stayed in it."

Both Jacob and I gave a glance to each other not knowing how to proceed, Lauren was telling us stuff just not enough to go on.

"You said she was a party girl?" I said while keeping my eyes on hers. She nodded. "Was she always partying? Or did she just sit and drink?"

"Both. Sometimes we would have crashers, legit people who didn't even go here come to parties. Whether they were invited or just showed up I don't know. I told Jess about it several times and she didn't care. Especially when one showed up and I told her. She didn't act like it was a big deal. I've always wondered if she knew her thinking back on it." Lauren said while it looked like she was thinking about it.

"Who?" I inquired. If it was who I was thinking, we may have another link.

"I don't know her name. Look, I'm not a party pooper, I get it some people crash parties but it usually the underage ones." Jacob nodded as I did. "This chick was older than us, she stuck out like a sore thumb. Sometimes her boyfriend would come with her. He graduated a few years ago so I knew he was crashing."

"I want to show you a picture, if that's alright. Will you let me know if you know who it is?"

"Of course!"

I took out Gianna's picture and flipped it around so that Lauren could see. It was one we had gotten at the time of her death to identify her. She was dressed to the nines of course, make-up on, and she looked right at the camera.

Lauren gasped. "That's her!" She nodded her head "She was always here!"

Jacob and I gave each other a look. I nodded. "Thank you." I replied.

"Was she murdered as well?" Lauren asked.

Lauren said she had been following the case, did she not know? Maybe she didn't recognize her. Since her name had been released, I thought it would be okay to confirm. "Yes, she was."

"Oh." Lauren replied and then she nodded. She seemed uncomfortable now.

"Are you alright?" I inquired while giving Jacob a look.

"I 'am, it's just she was here, then wow and then Jessica." She mumbled out and I assumed she was talking to herself.

"Is there anything else you can tell us about Jessica?" I inquired. I was ready to head back to the building, this day already tiring me. I also didn't feel well.

"Nothing that I can think of, at the moment." She was now calm and offered me a small smile.

"Well, here's my card if you remember anything." I handed it to her, and she took it. I then thought of something. "Did you know Charlotte Myers the other victim?" I asked as I stood up from the chair.

Lauren looked calm but shook her head. "I mean in passing, I had a class with her, but I never talked to her. She was a goth girl, but she was also really smart. She was also shy" Lauren recalled. "You would have to talk to her friend she would know more." Lauren said as we walked towards the front again.

"Who is her friend?" I asked with my eyebrow raised. Lauren then put her finger on her chin, "I think her name was Chelsea Hale. She is a loner, goth too"

I quickly wrote the name down in my pad and looked around again. "So, you're having a party?"

"It's a remembrance party for Jessica, can't really have a full-on thing since the Dean and Associate Dean is breathing down our necks." She shook her head. "Like I said before, they didn't care then but they do now." I nodded.

"Thank you for your time, Lauren." She nodded and Jacob and I left the house and made our way to the SUV. The hairs on the back of my neck rose and I was overcome with that feeling of being watched. However, looking around no one was paying attention to me. There were students walking about and everyone seemed to be in their own little world.

"Bells?" My head shot up to look at Jacob. He gave me a curious glance. "You ready?" I nodded before climbing into the driver's seat of the SUV.

UNKNOWN POV

I watched from afar as she drove off. I could see why the boss wanted her. Her tight ass, perky breasts that seemed a little bigger somehow and her long legs that seemed to go on. However, her scent was different than before. I had trouble keeping up with her today because her scent would change. It didn't make any sense to me, but I had been charged with following her. My phone beeped and I quickly answered it speaking in hushed whispers.

"Boss."

"Have you gotten her?" He inquired furiously. He was becoming impatient we had been at this for some time.

"Sorry boss, she's been hard to keep up with lately."

"She's a fucking human, how has she been hard to keep up with?" He roared on the other line.

"It's hard to pinpoint her scent, she's around all these humans who smell delicious."

He growled. "Then follow his scent, if it's truly her, his scent should be all around her."

"That's the thing boss, his scent isn't really there." There was silence on the other end. "Are you telling me that it's not her? Because if it was her, his scent would cover her. He wouldn't be able to stay away."

"It's vague Boss, but I'm pretty sure it's her. There are others watching her I can smell them. The one with the dreads stays near her apartment at night. It must be her."

"Hmm. Very odd he isn't there. Keep an eye out, and if it isn't her, we'll do to her what we did to the others. If you do get her and it is her, you will have to keep her hidden until I can make it out there. I don't know how much longer I can keep this big buffoon here before he comes back. "

"Will do Boss." And the line went dead.

BELLA POV

I unlocked my apartment door and quickly closed and locked it back. I checked every room to make sure I was alone before I settled down for the night. I was paranoid so sue me, but it was better to be safe than sorry. I kicked off my boots and unbuttoned my shirt as I made my way to my bathroom. I turned the water on to hot and I pulled the knot from my head and let my hair fall loosely around me. I slipped off my dress pants, socks, and underwear and stepped into the shower.

It felt amazing to have the hot water hit my over tired muscles. I still wasn't feeling well from lunch. I don't know if it's what I ate or what, but my stomach had been unsettled since. On the other hand, I was hungry, it didn't make sense to me honestly. It must be a pregnancy thing. I turned the water off when I was done and went to grab my robe when I heard a banging on my front door.

Who could be here? I quickly threw on my robe my hair dripping water around me and made my way to the door. I picked up my gun from the table and unlocked the door. I hadn't chained the lock and I could kick myself for not peeping through the hole to see who it was. When I opened the door, I was face to face with the god himself. His bronze hair wild and his beautiful eyes shined. He stared at me, and his eyes went dark when he looked me up and down. I don't know why but when he looked at me like that it made me feel a certain way down below.

"You answer the door in that?" He said as he made his way in, and I shut the door behind him.

"Well, you were banging on the door, it had me worried." I said not sure on why he was here.

He looked like he just left the office. He was wearing a three piece suit this time, his hair was sticking up not combed back like It had been the first time they met. He always looked good in a suit. I mean always. I started to feel that familiar ache between my legs as I looked at him.

He was asking me something, but I was so dazed that I didn't hear the question.

"What?"

"I said, how was your day?" He said with a smirk and then it went into a smile. I shook my head. "Sorry It's been a long day." I said walking back towards my bathroom. "Um, how was your day?" I asked back trying to make conversation. He had followed me of course.

I bent down to get my towel and pat my hair dry. "It's better now." He replied keeping his eyes on me.

I let out a sigh. I don't know what he meant by that, but I would not read into it. "So, um what are you doing here?" It had been a week since I had saw him and three days since he texted me that he was in.

His mouth went into a thin line. "Well, I told you I wanted to talk when I came back. I got in last night." He replied calmly.

I had finished patting my hair dry and wanted to go put some clothes on. I felt my face get heated knowing I was naked underneath the robe. However, my clothes were in my bedroom, and I didn't really want him to follow me there.

My stomach chose that time to rumble. "I'm sorry, I didn't eat much today." I replied.

His eyes suddenly shined bright, and he let out a small smile. "Well, then this is perfect. I haven't eaten dinner yet. We could go out for dinner and talk." I let out a hum. I wasn't even ready to go anywhere, and I was hit with a dilemma. Should I be seen with him right now? He had been cleared but what if someone from the office saw us? What if I ran into Jacob or the Cap? He had been cleared yes, but I would be questioned about everything that led up to this.

"Um, look dinner sounds nice but I don't know if going into a public place with each other is a good idea right now." I walked to my bedroom and of course he followed me.

His face changed, I saw his smile fade some and he seemed a little irritated. "Are—Are you ashamed of being seen with me?" He replied smoothly putting his hands in his pockets.

"No, that's not it. It's just running into someone that knows you was questioned and all and then me possibly losing the case." I muttered out with a shaky breath. What was it with this guy? Why did he make me feel like a blubbering schoolgirl?

His face then became one of anger. "What are you going to tell people when you start showing and they ask who the father is?" He said as he pointed to my belly. "Will you tell them you don't know?" He said as he walked towards me. "Because I refuse to not acknowledge that is my child." He said as I hit the edge of the bed. My heart dropped a little, I'll admit he spooked me a little. He was very quick to possessiveness.

It turned me on a bit, I won't lie but it also pissed me off to no end. I wasn't going to be talked to like that. I stood standing firm while also making sure the sash on my robe was tight. "Excuse me?"

He backed up a little while I started moving towards him. "First, I don't like being told what to do. Second, I never said I wouldn't tell people that you were the father. I said we probably shouldn't be seen together for the time being. Third, I'm not ashamed of you. I made a promise to those girl's families that I would find the killer. No offense, being seen with you would jeopardize all that." I huffed out taking a breath.

Edward stared at me with his arms crossed. His eyes searched mine, I don't know what he was searching for, but he finally let out a huff. "Fine." He said as he left the room. I quickly took this time to get dressed. I slipped on a pair of underwear and a bra. I then quickly put on a pair of yoga pants and a shirt and left my room.

Walking down the hall, I heard noise in the kitchen. I made my way in and saw Edward with some raw chicken he was seasoning. The anger from his features gone. He quickly turned towards me. "I saw you had some raw chicken in the fridge. I figured I could whip that up for us to eat." He went back to placing the chicken on a pan. 'Um, sure." I said as I went to my fridge.

I pulled out the contents for a salad as he put the chicken in the oven. He then started helping me chop the tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce for the salad. We moved around each other silently as we put it all in a bowl to eat. You could feel the tension in the air. I then pulled a block of cheddar cheese out of the fridge. I pulled out my grater and began to shred until I was done. He then picked it up and sprinkled it on the salad. "More." I said and he gave me an eyebrow but did put more on it. He kept adding more until I said stop and then started to mix it together.

We set the table, and placed glasses when the oven beeped. He pulled the chicken out, and I poured our glasses with water. I didn't really have anything else to drink but a good wine would have went well with this. Too bad I was pregnant though. After our plates were set, we sat down to eat.

It was rather awkward as we ate in silence. I grabbed the salad bowl and picked up some salad that was covered with cheese. "Would you like some salad with your cheese?" He said offering me a smirk. I let out a laugh and he followed. It was nice that the tension had been broken by cheese.

"Isabella, I'm sorry for being demanding. I'm usually used to having my way." He said as he cut his chicken.

"So am I." I said back as I drank some water.

"Our child is screwed." He let out a laugh and I nodded. Two stubborn parents. Yep, this child was definitely screwed. "Is that what you wanted to talk about?" I asked.

"Among other things yes." He replied finishing his chicken and pushing his plate to the side.

"Okay." I said awkwardly not sure how to start a conversation about a baby. Why did I go stupid when it came to this man?

"Well for starters, I know you received my text. You left me on read." He said sitting across from me at the table. I blushed while he gave me a sly smirk.

"Yeah, I'm sorry about that I didn't know what to say." I didn't though, I wasn't good at texting especially the father of my child.

He nodded. "I meant it I am in."

"What does that mean exactly?" I asked.

He let out a hum but hadn't said anything. It was like he was thinking of what to say. "I'm going to be involved in everything." He said with possessiveness, but it didn't sound demanding. It was a very weird and confusing way he said it. It was like he was fighting with someone for control and being careful about what he said.

"Everything?" I asked, He nodded again. "I want to be there for doctor visits, I want to be in the room at birth, I want to raise my child with him or her knowing that both of its parents are in its life." He huffed.

I nodded. "I agree." I mean why wouldn't I? Yes, it may be weird having him around at my most personal times but that was something I may have to get over. He did deserve the right to be there though.

He nodded happily. I guess because I agreed. "Can I ask a question?" I said it was something weighing on my mind.

"Of course," He said as he put his hands on the table together.

I felt my cheeks get red, again why was I turning into a blubbering fool? "When I told you I was pregnant. You didn't question it. I mean you didn't ask me if it was yours." I stammered out.

He stared at me, he always stared at me. He looked grim but finally smiled. "Well, why wouldn't it be? You don't strike me as one that sleeps around. Did you want me to ask you that?" He smiled but it looked genuine this time instead of what he forced on his face just a minute ago.

"No, I just thought it was rather odd, you didn't. I guess I've seen too many movies." I let out a nervous laugh.

"Isabella, I know like me that you're busy. What happened in Chicago, was something you probably never did before. But that night created our child and therefore I don't regret anything about that night."

If Bella was a lovesick fool, she would have swooned by now. Granted, the man made her a blubbering mess at times, but she was no fool. She knew they wasn't going to ride off in the sunset and get married and have more babies.

"I don't regret it either. I never thought I have a baby. It was always something that I wanted but never thought would happen." I said sadly before the corner of my mouth rose into a smile. "You must have some super sperm or something." I laughed as he joined me.

"Can I ask why you couldn't get pregnant?" I nodded now that I was pregnant It didn't really bother me talking about it. "I have primary ovarian insufficiency. It's like menopause before 40. Except my ovaries are covered in this hard like shell covering which makes it impossible to release an egg. I only had 1 % chance of ever releasing one. "I said a little bitterly but then smiled again. "So, Thank you." I finished lamely and he looked at me confused. I smiled again. "For giving me something that that I never thought I would have."

He gave me a warm smile but didn't say anything. We stared at each other before it hit me. "Oh!" I got up from my seat and ran back to the bedroom. Going to my drawer and pulling out my copies of the sonogram. I had an extra to give to him. I ran back to the kitchen where Edward hadn't moved but looked concerned.

"Here. I almost forgot." I said handing him the pictures. "Those are yours." He took them from me and looked at them carefully. I swear a smile graced his features a few times. I often had forgotten about our first meeting where he was cruel. He didn't seem like he was that person anymore.

"Can I ask a question?" He then turned towards me his face guarded now. Why the sudden change?

"Of course." He said as his posture became relaxed, his eyes studied mine as he sat the pictures down on the table. "Why were you so angry that day I came to your office?" I then sat back down in my seat across the table.

"I guess I need to apologize for that. There were some troubles at the Chicago office. You knew this." He waved his hand and I nodded. "Anyways, some of it was hitting the New York one and I was having trouble out in Italy as well. Still am." He added as an afterthought.

"What's in Italy?" I asked remembering that's where Emmett McCarthy was.

"An old business that's being fought over by me and a rival company." He spoke. "Emmett's still negotiating on my behalf." I nodded. I remember I still needed to question him, but I had forgot about him until now.

"Plus, I have a reputation to uphold." He let out a smile. "I'm the mean boss who doesn't give a fuck." He laughed. I nodded. I could see that.

"Can I ask why you aren't out there instead of Emmett?" I asked quietly. His face changed many times, his nostrils flared a few times and it seemed like he was having trouble controlling himself. I stepped back from my place at the table and that seemed to pull him out of whatever that was.

"Isabella." He gulped like he was thirsty. His face was calm now, relaxed it didn't make any sense why he had gotten so angry.

"Sorry, I was just curious." He waved his hand as if I shouldn't be sorry. Why would asking about Italy make him react that way? I slowly sat back down in my chair.

"It's fine. Aro and I the CEO out there don't see eye to eye about a lot of things. It usually always ends in a shouting match and sometimes a fight. This company has been in my family for generations, I've been trying to keep it that way while Aro has other plans." His nostrils flared again, and he then looked away like he was trying to keep his anger under control.

I would need to look up this Aro when I had time. If he made Edward react this way, I needed to know who he was.

"Besides." Edward had started talking again, I looked at him where a smile was now on his face. I smiled back it was hard not to. "If I had gone, I wouldn't have met you and we definitely wouldn't be having a child now." He smiled happily.

"Your right, we most definitely wouldn't." I also wouldn't have the information that I have now either.

We continue to talk, mostly about the future of our child. He wanted to be involved in everything. I wanted that too, but I'm not used to others in my life. All of this would be an adjustment for me for sure.

That night after he left, I went to bed, I must have been imagining him not wanting to leave because he seemed hesitant to. I was probably just imagining it.
