The Cabin:
Sam stopped halfway to his truck before realizing he'd paid for that room too and he'd be damned if he slept in his truck on a night like this, so he stormed back to the room punching in the code, ready for whatever fight she was going throw at him.
When he opened the door he saw her sitting there with a crestfallen expression on her face and almost ditched his plans.
"Look, I don't care how you feel about this but I paid to be here and will be sleeping in that bed." Sam said before undressing down to his boxers and getting into bed.
Mercedes cut her eyes at him. "It never changes does it? You are never going to change! Still as inconsiderate as ever."
He looked over to her. "I'm inconsiderate? You left me outside in the nude but I'm inconsiderate?"
"Yes, inconsiderate! Even now! You could've been a gentleman and taken the cot they offered but no you have to be so damn difficult all the time!"
Sam laughed. "Are you serious right now?"
Mercedes rolled her eyes and turned away from him. "Whatever."
"No, not whatever! You really think you're exempt from any of the blame and that's always been your problem and news flash you could as easily sleep on the damn cot!" Sam spat before turning away from her.
"That's my problem? Tell me Sam, what blame do I need to take?"
"Leaving when I needed you most and acting like I wasn't clear on my communication when you just forgot." Sam said lowly.
"You didn't want me Sam! I gave up a lot to be there with you and you just walked away, so what was I supposed to do?"
Sam sat up and looked over at her. "Bullshit. You weren't there and I can prove it, what event am I talking about?" He questioned.
She looked at him and shook her head, "No matter what I say Sam, you always have to be right. And I will never be enough for you. I wasn't then and I am not now so just leave me alone." She turned away from him.
"Deflection, something you've always been good at." He muttered before laying back down.
Mercedes wiped her eyes as she cried silently. Something she did often towards the end of their relationship. It used to be so easy and now, everything still just hurts.
Sam heard her sniffling and wanted to comfort her but he was still so angry about everything. He wished she would just admit that she forgot about a moment for him and had been pushing him ever since he called her out.
She didn't know when she fell asleep, but she jerked awake when a loud cackle hit the sky. She sat up holding her chest, she was never one to particularly like storms, but when the thunder was loud and close like this, she let her fear get the better of her. Climbing out of bed, she moved to the bathroom, splashing cool water over her tear stained face and hoped that would help.
After a moment she stared at herself in the mirror, eyes bloodshot red, hair a mess. She smoothed it down, looking out to the bed towards Sam, then looking back at herself. He was right, not about her forgetting but about her pushing him away. She knew he wanted her at a family function but the writing was on the wall, he was withdrawn, talking to people in private not wanting her to hear, he snuck off without telling her where he was going.
So she stayed at work, there was work to be done but someone else could have done it, she just didn't want to have to face him in front of his family. It hurt too much. Turning off the water she dried her face with the towel and crawled back into bed. Tomorrow she would find another place to stay but for now this was what she had to do. As her eyes closed another thunderous sound boomed across the sky and she shot up again fearfully.
"It's just a storm, you're fine." Sam mumbled and she was certain he was still asleep.
I know." She still said defensively as another crack hit the sky and she buried her face in her hands, trying to stop shaking.
Sam sighed and rolled over lifting to cover and giving her a knowing look. "I'm not going to get any sleep with you shaking like that. I'm willing to tolerate you until the storm ends." He said.
"I'm uh I'm fine. Go back to sleep I won-AHHHHH" A loud crash caused her to scream falling into Sam's side.
Sam rolled his eyes. "So damn stubborn." He said wrapping an arm around her, rearranging so that he was comfortable because it had been a long time since he'd slept this way.
Mercedes couldn't help feeling content in a way she hadn't felt since they broke up. "Thank you." She said softly. She was stubborn but she knew he was doing this to be kind and she appreciated it.
"Mhm." He said nestling into her hair before falling back asleep.
The storm hadn't bothered her the rest of the night, in the protection of Sam's arms, she didn't fear anything. She awoke only to pull Sam closer and fall right back to sleep.
The sun had risen when Mercedes woke up, wrapped in Sam's arms. She knew that she should've moved, but she couldn't, Sam's arm made her feel safe and secure, and she wasn't ready to let it go. She wasn't ready to let him go, not again, not yet.
Sam shifted in the bed, pulling Mercedes closer to him. He inhaled, remembering how much he loved her scent, how much he loved how she felt in his arms.
Leaning down he kissed her forehead, moving to her left then right cheek, and finally her lips as he had done every day for years. Mercedes exhaled, leaning into his kisses, and froze as he kissed her lips, but only for a moment, before kissing him back.
The kiss may have only lasted a minute or so but it was still filled with passion and lust…and love even if neither of them wanted to admit it. As they pulled away from each other they stared into each other's eyes before the reality of their situation hit them.
Mercedes stared at Sam clearing her throat. "Sam…umm."
"No, I know, we shouldn't have done that."
Mercedes smiled. "I was actually gonna tell you that "Little Sammy" is trying to come out and play."
Sam hesitated for a second before pulling away from her. "Oh…yeah well it's the morning…but also you of all people know, there is nothing "little" about him."
She blushed remembering all those mornings she would wake up to him being deep inside of her. "I remember." She managed to get out. She looked over his shoulder and saw that it was still raining.
"I don't think it's letting up anytime soon, guess you're stuck here just like I am." Sam said.
Mercedes nodded. "I was umm going to make breakfast if you would like some." If he could help her through last night, she could do this.
"No thanks, I'm going to go for a run." He said and she shot him a confused look. "It's only water." He added, he needed to get away from her before he found himself wanting to forgive her.
"Well, if you want some food… it'll be here." She said softly.
"I said no thanks!" He snapped before grabbing his bag, grabbing some clothes then walking into the bathroom.
"WELL FINE! YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE SUCH A JERK!" She shouted after he slammed the bathroom door.
Mercedes rolled her eyes going to the kitchen then stopped and remembered there was a small diner at the resort and decided she'd rather go there then be here when he got back.
Heading back to her room, she reached for her bag and went to grab something to wear, her mind drifting to what happened this morning. How upset she was that everything felt so damn right. She missed Sam, missed his arms, his kiss, his smile. Looking towards the bathroom where Sam was she allowed herself to imagine just for a moment, that they were actually here together, That he was still hers.
Placing the clothes on the bed she thought back to the last time she saw him, he was so cold and mean, just like he had been most of yesterday, it basically summed up the end of their time together. One minute everything was great and the next he was an asshole.
She sat on the bed, mind going over it all as she waited for him to come out of the bathroom. After a few moments she stood and threw off her nightie, he wasn't coming out anytime soon and she couldn't just sit there. No she would get dressed, go to breakfast then figure out her next steps. Pulling on her boy shorts, she stood topless searching for the matching bra, when the door opened to the bathroom.
Sam walked out of the bathroom and froze. "Fuck." He said under his breath before trying to force himself from looking at her but that was proving difficult because he was still standing there staring at her.
"Do you mind?" She asked turning her back completely and that just made the ache in his groin increase.
"Don't flatter yourself." He said, trying to sound disgusted. "Your bag is on top of my shoes." He pointed out before walking over and pushing her bag over to get his sneakers.
Mercedes looked at him like he was crazy before shaking her head. "You are such an asshole! I would've moved my bag, you didn't have to throw all my shit over!" She snapped and Sam chose not to reply, he instead shrugged and put his shoes on before walking out.
Mercedes watched him and nodded. "You wanna throw my shit, I can throw yours." She went to grab his bag, showing anything in it that spilled out, and made sure to leave it open, as she walked past him to the front door and tossed all his shit out into the rain.
"Hmmph." She said turning back around and heading back into the room. That felt really good.
Sam watched as she threw his things out and he couldn't even get mad, she did it topless and his big head couldn't control the rush of blood going to his little one. He would've walked back inside the cabin and showed her how he really felt about her doing that but chose to do his run instead hoping it would help with his growing frustration and lust for his ex.
The run didn't do what he hoped it would, it just made his body ache for her. She was a frustrating, mini pain in his ass, and yet he couldn't get her off his mind.
Grabbing the bag she had tossed onto the porch, he moved back into the cabin, ignoring her. That was the only way he could survive being here.
Going into the room, seeing her sitting on the bed reading, for a moment his mind flashed to when he'd come home from work and she was there just like that. He'd crawl over the bed to her-. Shaking the thought off he emptied the contents of his bag all over the bed. It wasn't as wet as he had hoped but it was just enough to irritate Mercedes.
Mercedes watched his clothes fly out of his bag and a small jewelry box landed practically on her lap. Looking at Sam, he looked mortified as he realized what she had.
Mercedes opened the box, seeing the 2 carat princess cut diamond ring, reality hit her, Sam was planning to propose to his girlfriend this weekend.
