What Happened in Vegas: Part Three

Mercedes sat at her desk rubbing her temples and looking at the same returned document she'd been receiving for little over a month. She'd filed for divorce the minute she landed back in Columbus and ever since then Sam had been returning the papers, unsigned.

She pulled out her phone and called him, already dreading this conversation. They'd been fighting since they returned and the only time he would speak to her is after she would try serving the papers to him.

"Yes, Mrs. Evans?"

"Sam for the thousandth time, sign the damn papers so I can move on with my life!"

"Papers? What papers?" He asked, playing aloof.

Mercedes let out a loud sigh. "I don't have time to play this game with you, sign the fucking divorce papers!" She replied through gritted teeth.

"No but while we're on the topic, I need your social for some tax documents. I also put you as my emergency contact."

"Sam, stop. I don't want this and you're forcing me to stay married to you for some crazy ass reason and ruining our friendship… what's left of it, that is, because you won't sign them!"

"I am sorry that was the bell. If you would like to speak to me about our marriage Mrs. Evans, you can join me for dinner tonight. I know you aren't working."

"Don't make me call my brother…" She threatened.

Sam chuckled. "Call him, in fact call your parents and let them know that we don't live in the same house, we aren't trying to make that grandchild they want nor have we seen each other since Vegas."

Mercedes balled her fist up. "You've been talking to my parents?"

"Of course I've been speaking to my mother and father in law, we've been talking regularly. Don't worry I've been covering for you but your mom wants to come over for dinner and so does mine so you might want to bring a few things over." He answered before hanging up.

Mercedes stared at the phone full of rage, Sam Evans was about to regret crossing her. He wanted a wife. She would give him a wife.

Mercedes chewed her bottom lip angrily, she still couldn't believe Sam was forcing her hand like this, over a marriage neither of them wanted at that. She pulled into his place, shaking out her nerves. He could try to turn her family against her but by the end of this dinner, Sam would regret pushing her like this.

Grabbing her two bags and a garment bag, she dropped the bags at the door and knocked, using her key to walk into his place. She did always love his place. It was a ranch, three bedroom, two and a half bath and a really nice backyard, small but nice.

As she walked into his house, Sam stopped in his tracks as she entered. She didn't pay him any attention. "Grab my bags and take them to the master room. You can sleep in the guest room." She said heading right for his room.

Sam shook his head smiling, while she was still pissed, she was there and that was step one in winning her over. Grabbing her bags he shut the door taking them to his room. When he noticed she wasn't there, he moved to the bathroom. Turning the knob he laughed.

"You do realize I still need to shower and all my stuff is in there." He yelled through the door. Not even one minute later he received a text.

M: Check your bed.

Sam turned to see his toiletries sitting on top of divorce papers. He grabbed the papers before walking out of his room and going to his office where he shredded the papers, then headed back into the bedroom.

He counted to ten before using his key to unlock the bathroom door and smiled at Mercedes who was standing there half naked.

"Since we both need a shower, we can conserve water and do it together." He said removing his clothes.

"Get out! I'm not showering with you!" Mercedes said shoving him but he didn't budge.

"Our parents will be here in thirty minutes so I suggest you pretend you like me before they get here." He replied, walking over to the shower and turning it on. "Oh and I will be kissing you, a lot." He added before stepping inside.

Mercedes watched him and smiled sweetly. "Oh Sam…no, you won't." She breathed as she flushed the toilet. Then walked out with her things towards the guest bathroom.

Sam shrieked before jumping out of the shower "I will kiss you and you will kiss me back!" He shouted as ran after her.

Mercedes ignored him shutting the door and putting down something that would stop him from entering. The man was relentless but being his best friend she knew all his tricks.

"Whatever you're doing isn't going to work, Cedes. And you know I will stand out here naked until our parents come!" He said, wiggling the door knob.

Turning on her music to tune Sam out, Mercedes moved to take her shower, taking her time in getting ready. She didn't want him to think she was in any hurry to play his wife.

Sam waited a few more moments before saying fuck it and walked outside, knowing the window wasn't locked and took the screen out before opening it and climbing through. He knew she would try something so he unlocked every window, he hadn't planned on doing this naked but she made him do crazy shit.

Sam swung the bathroom door open before walking over to the shower and opening the door and staring at her angrily.

"You will have to play better than that." He said, stepping into the shower behind her.

"What the hell!" She said covering herself.

"You are my wife and I've seen you naked even before we got married so there's no use in doing that." He said grabbing her body wash and squeezing some into his hands. "Turn around."

"Hell to the no! Get out!"

Sam shot her an exacerbated look before turning her himself. "No and since you can't run anywhere we can finally talk." He replied gently, rubbing the soap into her skin. "I found a house." He added, moving his hands down her shoulders to her breast.

She eyed him shaking her head. "What is wrong with you? You got me confused with Penny?"

Sam flashed his eyes at her lightly squeezing her breast before moving his hands down to her stomach. "It's closer to your job and has five rooms. I figured you want to have your own space and there will be plenty of room for kids. It has a big yard as well, good for cookouts." He said, ignoring her dig about Penny.

She slapped his hand away. "Listen here you crazy person. You are going to sign those papers and pray that after all this nonsense I forgive you."

Sam rolled his eyes, pulling her into him. "I think four kids is a compromise, I know you want a huge family but we have to take into account college for said kids and I want a dog… maybe two."

Mercedes closed her eyes, taking a breath. Her anger boiling over, which was a good thing, this way she could ignore the low burn in her body growing with need for him. "Get. Out. Of. This. Shower. Now." She gritted out.

Sam ran his hands along her back and looked down at her with furrowed brows. "You know this is the most you've spoken to me since we left Vegas? I've missed talking to you, hell this is the first time I've seen you and all you can do is look at me like I kicked your puppy."

She shook her head looking away from him, willing the tears not to form. "You act like I didn't have a good reason. And trust me if I didn't have to be talking to you, I still wouldn't be."

"Then maybe words aren't what you need right now." He said cupping her cheeks before kissing her.

She fought against him, pushing him away from her to no avail. She really needed him to let go before she gave in.

Sam took a few steps forward, forcing her against the wall. "Talk to me Cedes." He said.

She looked away from him as her back hit the cold tile, she didn't want to talk to him, she couldn't put into words the pain she felt.

"Talk to me." He pleaded, turning her face so that she was looking at him. "Talk to me baby."

She stared at him, tears welling up in her eyes as she shook her head no. "We need to finish getting ready, our parents will be here soon."

He sighed and took a step back. "Yeah. I didn't even need a shower." He admitted before getting out and leaving the room.

The moment Sam left, she broke down, all the emotions and feelings she'd been bottling up since Vegas came pouring out of her. Feelings of losing Matt, of Sam betraying her. It was all too much for her. After a moment she gathered herself and put the mask of being okay back on. She would get through this, and leave.

Twenty minutes later, Mercedes stepped out of the guest bedroom fully dressed. Wearing a form fitting pink long sleeved dress, with a deep V-neck that fell to just below her knees. She added a pair of gold open toed shoes. Her hair was curled in a half updo and her make up was natural, except for her lips in which she wore a matte red lipstick. She walked towards the dining room, seeing Sam setting the table.

Without words, she moved to grab the glasses, placing them on the table as well.

Sam looked at Mercedes, admiring how beautiful she looked but chose not to say as much because he needed to make it through dinner and if he complimented her now, he would only push it further later.

He heard the knock on the door and sighed. "I'll grab it." He said placing the last dish down before heading to get the door.

She nodded as she finished setting the table and taking a breath before joining Sam at the door, she didn't even know what he told his parents or hers.

"There she is, looking beautiful as always." Mary said, smiling at Mercedes. "That post wedding glow is still all over you." She added pulling Mercedes into a hug.

Mercedes smiled, hugging her back. "It's great to see you Mrs. Evans."

"Look at her being all formal." Dwight teased placing a kiss on her cheek. "How are you doing?"

"I am good, Hospital is keeping me busy but you know I love my job." She said smiling.

"Oh Look at the Newlyweds!" Diane Jones said walking inside the door. "I can't even be mad because we all knew it was just a matter of time." She said going over to hug Sam.

"I can be a little mad." Preston Jones spoke up. "But that's just because she's my baby girl."

"Hey moma, daddy." Mercedes said, trying not to look like she was uncomfortable. Everyone was so happy about this fake marriage and all she wanted to do was run and hide.

"Hey sweetie, you look well. I see Sam is keeping you smiling." Diane said, hugging her daughter.

Sam hugged his dad and Mr. Jones, smiling. "So dinner is ready, I know you all wanna eat."

Mary nodded, linking arms with Diane. "Looks like we are finally in-laws."

"Took them long enough, don't you think?" Diane smirked.

"Sam a word?" Mercedes said, grabbing his arm waiting for their fathers to walk out of the room.

"You guys go ahead, everything's set out. We'll be there in just a minute." Sam said smiling and they all walked into the kitchen talking about various things.

Mercedes waited before looking at Sam. "What all did you tell them?" She asked.

"I told them that we went to Vegas with the guys and realized how much we loved each other." He said taking her hand in his. "That we walked past the chapel and on a whim we decided to throw caution to the wind and went for it."

Mercedes removed her hands from his and furrowed her brows. "So you lied and never stopped? Why does it seem like my parents think something more than what this is?"

"They think we're happily married, they think we're in love and they think that this was mutual because that's all I told them… I won't touch you or anything just… let's just get through dinner." He answered.

"And then what?" She sighed.

"And then you will sit and talk to me, before you get snappy, that is the only way I'll sign the papers. After we have a real conversation and you tell me why this won't work outside of Penny." Sam replied before walking away before she could protest.

Mercedes let out an annoyed breath. "This is going to be a long dinner." She muttered following him to the dining room.

Sam said "YOU MY WIFE!" lol
