What Happens In Vegas
Mercedes sat down next to Sam trying to figure out how she was going to make it through dinner with his and her parents, really believing they were happy newlyweds.
"Sam tells me he found a house for you. I bet it'll be better than going back and forth." Diane said and Mercedes had to stop herself from shooting daggers at him.
"We haven't fully decided on if that is our move but yes, he's seemed to have found a place that might work." She answered, earning looks from each of their parents.
"We were under the impression that you two already closed on it and are just waiting for it to be furnished." Preston said and Mercedes choked on her water before looking at Sam.
"I guess the secret's out… I was planning on surprising her." He said, avoiding looking at Mercedes.
"Oh how romantic!" Mary said. "Judging by the size of the house, should we be expecting some grand kids in the future?"
"Honey, let them get through the honeymoon phase first." Dwight chimed in earning an appreciative smile from Mercedes.
"Enough about us, how's everything going for you guys?" Sam asked knowing if they lingered on these topics for too long that Mercedes would probably burst.
Preston grabbed a roll and smiled. "Well your brothers are coming to town next month so your mother and I were thinking that maybe we can have a ceremony then."
"A what now?" Mercedes said.
"Well, you know we didn't get to see you two get married and from what Sam explained it was just a quick Vegas thing so we wanted to give you two a real wedding." Diane explained, smiling.
"Ah, why not just throw a reception?" Sam suggested and Mercedes turned looking at him angrily.
"Because I want to walk my little girl down the aisle. And I am pretty sure, Dwight wants to stand up there and watch his son take my daughter away from me." Preston joked.
"I think… I…" Mercedes stammered before Sam grabbed her hand to help her calm down.
"I think we need to discuss if we want to do something like that besides when are they coming into town?" Sam asked.
Mercedes looked at him gratefully. "Yeah we need to talk about it. Make sure we can afford it, especially since we just bought a house apparently."
"Oh sweetie, we would pay for everything since it was our idea and I'm sure you guys friend Kurt wouldn't mind helping with your dress and tux" Mary said waving that thought off.
"Oh we could have it at your new place!" Diane said and Mary nodded excitedly.
"Yes! It could be a housewarming and a wedding! Oh we need to start figuring out decorations and food! How much time do we have?"
"The boys will be in town next month." Preston answered.
Mercedes sat there shaking her head as their parents planned a wedding that would never happen. She looked at Sam before quickly getting up and running out of the room.
"What… is she okay?" Diane asked. "Did we overstep?"
Sam shook his head. "No, I… I think she's just a bit overwhelmed, give me a second to go check on her." He said, getting up and going to find Mercedes.
Mercedes ran her hands through her hair as she paced the floor in the living room, this was so much to take in, she was ready to file for divorce and her family were just going on and on about how great it was. The sad thing was that if things were different, if Sam hadn't hurt her the way he did, she wouldn't be opposed to being with him, she would even consider making it work.
"Merce… are you okay?" Sam asked knowing that was a loaded question.
She looked at him, frowning, "Sam, they are going insane in there."
He ran his hand through his hair sighing before sitting down on the couch. "I know and I'm sorry. I didn't expect any of this and I swear I didn't help them plan that crazy shit. I just… I just wanted you to see how happy everyone else is about us being together."
"Why? Why are you fighting for this so hard Sam? Why not just sign the papers?" She asked softly.
Sam dropped his head letting out a breath before looking up at her.
"The same reason you're fighting so hard to end this and I don't be the bullshit reason about Penny because I know you. And whether you want to admit it or not you love me and that's why you're doing all of this." He answered.
"You don't know me! If you did you would see how much what you did hurt. What she did! What she said!"
Sam shook his head. "What else? What else did I do or you assumed I did that hurt you? Huh? Because I remember when he died and I remember being there every damn day after his crash. I was there for everything and for you to continue to accuse me of that… of intentionally hurting you… you can't even tell that you're hurting me thinking I would do that but I'll sign the papers. I'll do it after dinner and we can come up with something to tell our folks before they get too deep into planning." He said standing and walking back into the dining room.
Mercedes ran her hands through her hair as Sam walked away from her. She chewed her bottom lip, wiping the tears away from her eyes as her mother and Mary walked into the room.
"You okay baby? Sam said you weren't feeling well." Her mother said sitting next to her.
Mercedes sighed, shaking her head. "This is all happening so fast I guess."
"I guess it would seem that way but for us we've always known it was bound to happen."
"Why does everyone keep saying that?" She asked and her mother just smiled.
"You know, you and Sam have always shared this special bond, one that anyone who spends anytime with you two can see. We knew there was something there." Diane said looking at Mary, "But it wasn't until that tragedy with Matt did we realize how much you two loved each other. Hell, we half expected you to come back married years ago."
Mary took her hand. "There is no one better suited to being Mrs. Samuel Evans than you are Mercedes. My son has never been happier and it does my heart good to see it."
Mercedes managed to give them a smile before nodding. "Yeah, I guess so. Let's finish eating before they eat it all." She said with a slight laugh.
Both mothers smiled as they walked back into the dining room.
"Ah there our beautiful women are, we were just planning a fishing trip for sometime next weekend." Dwight said and Mercedes looked at Sam who seemed to only just be present now.
"Well that means we can plan a shopping trip then." Diane said and Mary nodded in agreement.
"Spa day and shopping sounds more up my alley." Mary countered.
"There goes all our money." Preston joked.
Mercedes looked over to Sam, she really hated that look on his face, but at the end of the day, all she had to do was get through dinner.
"So Sam, we didn't get to talk much about your day? Anything interesting happen at school today?" She said offering him a small smile.
Sam looked at her before looking back at his plate. "It was a typical day… kids loving to learn more about history and practice was pretty good. We have a solid team this year, just need to make sure they're ready." He answered almost robotically.
Mercedes nodded. "We had a pretty tame day as well." She said looking back to her parents. "We had a pair of teens get super glued together off of a prank." She said, trying to fill the dead air.
"I bet that was exciting." Diane chimed in. "How did you get them unglued?"
"I always wondered why kids would do such silly things but then I remember you have three older brothers…" Preston said, making everyone laugh, everyone except Sam.
"I'm going to get the dessert." Sam said before leaving for the kitchen.
Mercedes watched Sam leave and sighed. When he didn't return after a few minutes she stood. "I am going to see what's taking him so long." She said walking into the kitchen.
"...Yeah, it's only been a few months but the house is in both of our names and I don't need it so she can have it." Sam said into the receiver of his phone.
Mercedes stopped walking when she heard Sam on the phone.
"Q, don't. It's fine besides at least I know where we stand and it was only a few months. I pay whatever fees, just make sure it's a fair deal." He said before hanging up. He placed his hands on the counter letting out a deep breath.
Mercedes stepped further into the kitchen looking at him, even when he said he would sign the papers, a part of her figured he would make an excuse. "I see you are putting Q to work. You don't have to worry about any of that Sam. I am not trying to take anything from you."
Sam looked over his shoulder and nodded. "I know but it still has to be done right. I don't really care what you do with the house after it's all over. You can keep it, sell it or lease it out… I got it for you." He replied, grabbing the apple pie off the counter and ice cream. "It's almost over."
"Sam I-" What could she say? Sorry we are divorcing?
"Don't. I'm sorry for thinking this could've been great… can you grab the plates?" He asked before walking away.
She placed her hands on the counter. He was doing everything she wanted him to do. So why was she feeling this way?
After dessert, they talked with their parents some more before they decided it was time for them to take their leave. Mercedes was hugging her parents when she noticed that Sam wasn't in there with them.
"We'll call tomorrow about the ceremony." Diane said and Mercedes just nodded.
"And make sure to call Kurt okay?" Mary added before everyone left. Mercedes shut the door and let out a sigh of relief because it was finally over.
She walked into the dining room fully prepared to help clear the table but it had already been done and Sam was sitting there patiently.
"I would've helped clean up." She said and he just shot her a look before pulling the papers out.
"I assume you have to witness me signing them, correct?" He asked.
"I… no, they just needed to be filed before-" She started before he took out a pen and began signing the marked pages.
"Sam wait…before we do this I need to know that this friendship can come back from this, I know it will take work but I just, I need to know that we will be okay." She said, taking a breath as she glanced at him.
Sam looked at her before looking away. "No. it won't come back from this and maybe that's for the best." He replied, sliding the signed papers over to her. "You can stay or you can go. I will be in my office."
"You can't be serious here, Sam, we got married after a drunken night in Vegas, this wasn't…I don't. Sam, our friendship can't just be over!" She said, looking at him.
"I am serious and I don't have the energy to explain the many reasons why we can't just be friends anymore." He answered standing up and walking towards the stairs. "Besides, you got what you wanted, right?"
"Not at the expense of losing you!" She moved towards him blocking his way, "Sam you really are just gonna walk away. Just like that?"
"Just like you wanted me to do, you stopped talking to me, you shut me out and now that I've given you what you wanted it's not enough? It's not up to your specifications now you want to fight for our friendship? I asked you to just talk to me but you couldn't and wouldn't do that. I begged you to meet with me but you wouldn't because of some bullshit Penny said. You believed her words over me, over our friendship so frankly it ended the moment you decided that I would hurt you and laugh about it." He replied, moving around her.
"Fine! Keep your house! Keep your friendship! I don't want anything from you!" She said turning away from him, not bothering to grab the papers or her clothing she grabbed her keys and ran out of the house, not knowing where she was going but not caring either.
Sam ran after her, catching her before she made it to her car. "You don't get to run away after demanding I sign these and leave them. You wanted the damn divorce and you got it. All you had to do was talk to me." He said, shoving the papers into her hands before walking back inside and slamming his door.
Mercedes stared after him and down to the papers in her hand she realized he wasn't going to fight for them to stay married and he wasn't going to be there for her anymore. She wasn't entirely sure what emotions she was currently feeling but the one that stood out the most was sadness.
She'd lost her best friend and this time she couldn't blame Penny, or alcohol. She only had herself to blame for this but like he said, it was what she wanted, right?
"San are you sure we should just walk in like this?" Blaine asked.
"She hasn't answered any of our calls in two weeks, Lips is off somewhere in the woods finding himself and their parents asked if she was okay. So yes, it's fine plus I have a key." She replied, unlocking Mercedes' door and they slowly walked inside.
"Her house is so… clean." Blaine commented and Santana nodded.
"I see. Something is definitely not okay here. The last time it was this clean Whitney Houston died and she made us have a concert for her."
Sebastian walked directly into her kitchen and looked into her pantry. "There's no food in here." He chimed in before checking the fridge. "And the fridge is empty… did Sam say anything when you talked to him?"
Santana shook her head. "The only thing he said was that it didn't work out. Then he hung up in my face and I've tried calling but it goes straight to voicemail, at least her phone rings. She's clearly charging it."
"Well, let's get this over with… she must be in her room." Blaine said, walking down the hallway and knocking on her door. "Knock, knock." He turned the door handle and opened it.
"Oh sweetie…" Sebastian said when they saw her lying there in her scrubs looking at nothing. "Are you okay?" He asked.
Mercedes didn't answer, she just continued looking at nothing.
"Merce, you need to let us know that you're okay… everyone is worried and you haven't been answering any of our calls." Blaine said, moving to sit next to her.
Mercedes turned her head to look at him before turning back to staring at nothing, she was numb, felt nothing anymore and one wrong move or conversation would bring it all back, she didn't want that.
Santana sighed knowing she would have to be the bad guy. "Fine if coddling isn't going to work then I'll be the bitch. You fucked up and now you're in here feeling sad about it. It's your fault that you picked the words of some blonde bitch over Trouty." She said walking into the room and standing directly in her line of sight.
"San don't." Sebastian said and she shook her head.
"No! Yes we set all of this shit up to happen but not because we thought it would end this way, we did it because we knew that deep down you two are secretly in love with each other but like typical Mercedes you used your head instead of your heart. Look, I get that you are still broken over Matt but we all know that he was shitty!"
"Santana!" Blaine shouted.
"He was shitty to you! He was shitty for making you feel like you weren't enough. He was shitty for dumping you because you wouldn't have sex with him and he was shitty-" She stopped when she felt Mercedes' hand go across her face.
"YOU THINK I DON'T KNOW THAT! ANY OF THAT! YOU THINK I DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT I FUCKED UP!" Mercedes stood going over to her dresser and grabbing the papers and tossing them at Santana. "I can't even send them! You think that I didn't try to apologize and get hung up on? Something I know I deserved but damn!" She shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "You guys can let yourself out." She said walking away from them.
Santana noticed something fall on the floor when she threw the papers and picked it up before going after her and making her stop.
"This makes you shitty if you don't tell him." She said, shoving the pregnancy test into her hand then walking out with Blaine and Sebastian close behind.
