"I was full of righteous anger when I broke into Nuri's room where they had locked her in. It was a fairly comfortable room, but it was a prison. She was crumpled in the bed, as she was weary of trying to get out. Her eyes moved wildly, looking at me, not knowing if I was another jailer or a rescuer. I spoke to her softly and she gave me a wild look. She did not trust me. And I knew that she would scream and fight me. So I did what I thought was a sensible thing. I bit her so as to control her – and because I was hungry I took more than was safe.. no. not for her, for me. Because her madness – for she was mad – reached me.
"I sensed a presence around me… two presences, but I could not focus on them. I had to get Nuri out, take her to Zayda… because they must be related, they were so much alike.. I got her out and hypnotized the servant who saw us get out, I opened the door and led her out.
"And all the time I was convinced of the rightness of my actions. I felt proud of doing the right thing. I opened the door and called Zayda"

"Nuri! You are alive!" Zayda embraced her sister and sobbed "What did they do to you? You are with your family, you are safe…"
Amos moved away to see Titus shake his head. "They lied to us. And all of Dame Alice's supposed kindness was her guilt for allowing this. For we are just gypsies, and we do not count. We are too dark, too poor, too superstitious. What evil people they are."

"I do not remember much after that. I had disjointed images forming in front of me, and I had the need to got out, to tear something…. I sensed that something…someone was touching me, but I could barely acknowledge it… it was like the buzzing of an insect, or a half remembered song… I flew over the coast and I did tear something… I heard something tearing, and I felt it tear… Fortunately no man nor woman crossed my path, because they would have become something to tear…until the night wore off and I could sense the sun rising. And then I felt the touch again, and this time I knew who it was."

"Genevieve"
"This is not your time, Amos, I know. Your time will come later and with it my freedom. May you prove a better guardian that I have been."
"I am sorry for…for scaring you, for making you run…"
"We are both victims of the same curse. We are being punished for the sins of our families. It has to be. Just be a good guardian, a better guardian than me, because there are too many things that I cannot undo nor help."
"I loved you Genevieve, I love you."
"I love you too, Amos. But it was not to be. Now go back to your coffin and whatever must happen will happen."

"And with these words she vanished, and I flew back to hide from the sun once more."
