Kagura trudged through the market stalls, her head hung low along with her spirits. While the memory of the hug was tucked away in the back of her mind, she thought about how Sakaki had told her everything was fine. Surely she couldn't be better already. There began a feeling of inadequacy that began to grow inside Kagura, for she felt as though the person she was closest too and liked hanging out with the most wanted nothing to do with her. She continued her walk down the street, her eyes mostly sticking to the ground. As she continued to dwell on these thoughts, she noticed that the pavement had began to change and the noise began to die down. Kagura looked up and realized she reached the end of the stalls. "Shoot." She thought to herself. "The supermarket's back there."
Kagura reluctantly turned around and walked back through the market, her mind still full of doubts and worries. After meandering through the semi-busy street for a few minutes, she had arrived outside the supermarket. The sliding doors smoothly slid open, and the tomboy entered, making her way to the back of the store where the juice was kept refrigerated. She picked up some cartons from the shelf and compared the dates on them, before picking up the one with the longest shelf life. Before making her way to the cash registers, she decided to walk up and down the aisles to see if there was anything else she wanted to pick up. As she entered the novelty aisle, a headband with a pair of black cat ears attached caught her eye. She looked at them for a moment before picking them up. Kagura looked around for a mirror, eventually finding a small hand mirror further down the aisle. After placing the juice down and putting the cat ears on her head, she then examined herself in the mirror, and afterwards shook her head, making sure that it would stay firmly fixed on her head. "Those look good on you." An elderly woman said from further down the aisle. Kagura turned around and blushed. "Thank you, they're for a friend." She explained, feeling somewhat embarrassed. Placing the mirror back down, she took off the cat ears, picked the juice back up and made her way to the cash registers.
"Mom, I'm home!" Kagura yelled as she entered the house.
"Did you get the juice?" Her mother replied.
"Yes, mom!" The tomboy replied. She made her way into the kitchen and put the juice away in the fridge, then headed up stairs to undress. Upon entering her room, she put the cat ears on the small bookshelf next to her TV. For the rest of the afternoon, Kagura mostly played videogames on her TV, taking a break only to lift her weights and do her evening run. She took another shower upon arriving home, this time taking her time. Later on, while she was gaming again, her phone began to ring. She paused the game and answered.
"Hello?" She said.
"Hey, Kagura. It's Sakaki." Sakaki said. Kagura felt a flash of heat envelop her body, her cheeks quickly heating up and turning a rosey red. "Oh, hey, what's up?" She confidently asked, her voice not wavering in the slightest.
"Um, I was wondering..." Sakaki began, feeling somewhat embarrassed.
"Hm?" Kagura let out.
"...do you still want to hang out tomorrow?" Sakaki finished. Kagura felt a little more at ease now. "Oh, yeah, totally." The tomboy affirmed to her friend. She felt happy for a split second, then anxious the next. "Wait, how come?" She quickly questioned. "Are-are you busy or something?"
"Oh, no, nothing like that." Answered Sakaki. "I just...I was wondering what you wanted to do...is all."
Kagura felt more relief.
"Oh, I gotcha. Um, well, we could go to the movies if you want?" Suggested the short haired girl.
"That would be nice." Answered Sakaki. "Um..." The quiet girl continued. "I have another question."
Kagura went all red again, growing a little hotter. She sat down on her bed. "What is it?" Asked Kagura, trying to keep her cool.
"How come..." Sakaki's voice trailed off. Kagura was silent. "How come...you hugged me earlier?"
An even greater wave of heat flushed Kagura, her body nearly breaking into a sweat.
"Oh, well, uh, you just...you just seemed, kind of sad recently, and so I just wanted you to know, that, you know...I'm here for you."
"I see." Sakaki answered shortly after Kagura finished.
"Sorry if it was too much."
"Oh, no, it's nothing like that at all. I was just confused."
A final wave of relief crashed into Kagura, rushing over her body and calming her wild and rampant mind.
"I'm always here if you need someone." She said in an attempt to confront her friend. Sakaki was silent for a moment.
"Sakaki? You still there?" Asked Kagura.
"I don't want to be a burden." Softly spoke Sakaki, her voice slightly trembling.
"What? You're not a burden." Kagura told her friend. "I'm always here for you, no matter what."
"Th-thank you, Kagura."
"Anytime."
"I have to get going. I'll see you tomorrow."
"I'll see you tomorrow too! Goodnight!"
"Goodnight."
Kagura hung up the phone, satisfied that things between her and her best friend were still good. She placed her phone down next to the cat ears and went back to playing videogames, exictiedly awaiting her hand out with Sakaki tomorrow. "Thank you God." She thought. "Thank you."
