A.n I own Nothing
Okay, so apparently only a grand total of 4 people realised that Alucard was the white wolf in the last chapter, everyone else complained that Alucard was not in it. So for clarification...ALUCARD WAS THE WOLF! I already revealed his wolf form in The Savage Time arc and thought it was EXTREMELY obvious that he was the wolf. Since J'onn was having a mental breakdown I figured he would prefer a silent companion to a speaking one as he was trying to get away from all the noise.
So here is an alternate version of the previous chapter without Alucards wolf form.
Also Season 3 starts next Thursday Australian time...YAY!
As Always Please Review
Alucard was walking through the woods, he needed some alone time to not only process Lyudmil death but also think things through with a clear head. Alucard had always found walking through the woods helped him put things into perspective and this time was no different. Plus, the cool night air and the sounds of the night helped keep him calm and relax.
As he was walking, he thought he heard someone moaning, he looked up in time to see a green humanoid figure pass over him and head deeper into the woods.
'what was that?' he wondered.
Alucard headed through the forest in the direction to the creature was headed. And after fifteen minutes for found the green figure on in a clearing and on his knees, holding his head tightly with a very painful look on his face.
Alucard narrowed his eyes and put his hand on his sword, he didn't know what this creature was, but it was clear it was in pain and it had not noticed him yet. As much as Alucard wanted to know who or what this creature was and try to help him, he stayed back and watched carefully trying to determine if this green figure was a threat or not. If it was Alucard could deal with it without issue since there was no one else around however if it wasn't, he could keep an eye on it.
Either way, he would need to alert the Justice League as they would have a better chance of identifying the strange creature. A cry of pain spurred Alucard into action, threat or not he would not stand by and watch this creature suffer.
"Stop…. Just Stop…" the creature cried out.
Alucards' eyes widened as he recognized the voice. 'That sounded like…J'onn?'
Alucard started at the green figure, it couldn't be J'onn, the Martian had a bulkier human look. But the thing in front of him matched both his voice. Alucard drew his sword and slowly and carefully came out of the trees; ready just encase this green creature was hostile.
Upon realizing that someone was behind him, the creature whirled around to see Alucard standing behind him, sword drawn and slowly approaching.
"A…A…Alucard," the Creature asked in pain. Alucard narrowed his eyes wondering how this creature knew his name. But the collapsed on to his hands barely holding himself up and screamed in pain once again. Once he had stopped screaming the creature turned to look at Alucard.
"Help me," the creature begged.
Alucard stared at the figure, he didn't think it would ask him for help. But he carefully moved closer, once he was next to him Alucard bent down to one knee, he set his sword aside and leaned forward. He gave the creature a few sniffs just to make sure. The scent undeniably belonged to J'onn.
"J'onn…is…is that you?" Alucard asked.
The green creature nodded and then winched in pain as if he was now trying to hold it in.
"What happened? Why do you look like this?" Alucard asked as he reached out to support the Martian.
"This…This is what my people surely look like," J'onn breathed out.
"I see…. forgive me. I thought that you were more…human," Alucard apologized. He felt bad for approaching his friend with his blade drawn and thinking he was a threat.
"I chose that form so I would not scare the humans," J'onn claimed "Batman was weary too,"
He then winced in pain and gripped his head tighter. Alucard gave him a concerned look and walked closer.
"Are you injured?" Alucard asked.
"No…just…. it's too loud," J'onn said in pain.
Alucard listened with his vampire hearing but all he heard was the normal night-time noises.
"I hear nothing but the night," Alucard stated. He was not hearing anything out of the ordinary.
Alucard waited patiently for J'onn to calm down and once he had the martin explained what happened and in an attempt to find Luther he had done a psychic sweep of Metropolis, but now he could not close his mind to it and he could hear everyone's thoughts. It was so overwhelming that in an attempt to regain control he fled out to the woods where he hoped the noise would stop.
"I see…. you should not have done that," Alucard claimed.
"I had to, Luther had to be found," J'onn claimed.
"Did you find him?" he asked.
The martin shook his head.
"Can you hear my thoughts?"
"No…I can't," J'onn answered "your mind has always been…been harder to
"Good, then focus on that…focus on the silence around you," Alucard advised.
J'onn did as he was instructed and found that it helped relieve the pain. He took a few deep breaths as well with Alucard coxing him and encouraging him to breathe deeply. After a good twenty minutes, J'onn's mental pain had reduced significantly, though it would be hours before he could close his mind up again and even longer for the pain to completely fade.
"Better?" Alucard asked once J'onn had finished his breathing exercises.
"Yes. What are you doing out here?" J'onn asked "This is the last place I would have expected to find you,"
"I wanted to go for walk," Alucard claimed
"A walk?"
"Yes, something happened recently…and I needed some time to clear my thoughts on the matter,"
"Does it have to do with Lyudmil?"
"In a sense,"
"I see. Does it help?"
"I find it dose…. would you care to join me?"
"I don't know if I should," J'onn said hesitantly.
"Very well," Alucard said "I will leave you be,"
Alucard picked up his sword and stood up, he sheathed the blade and turned away and started to walk off and J'onn watched him before he stood up and followed the vampire. The wandered through the woods in silence, J'onn would grp his head every now and then and Alucard would stop to wait for the martin's episode to pass but never commented or judged.
"Better?" Alucard asked after they had been walking for close to an hour.
"Yes…. I think I am regaining some control," J'onn agreed.
"I don't understand why humans are so loud, superficial and greedy," J'onn said, "I only heard them think of themselves and scorn others…how can they have so little kindness in them?"
"My father used to say that humans were nothing, and that man was nothing but a miserable pile of secrets. their sole purpose on earth was to feed the creatures of the night and that they deserved their fate," Alucard claimed.
"I am beginning to see the wisdom in that," J'onn said.
"but he was wrong," Alucard said.
"How so?" J'onn asked, "Are they not selfish and willing to hurt their own kind for petty reasons?"
"Yes, and I will not deny that they're capacity for violence is highly disturbing," Alucard agreed.
"Then why does the league protect them, are they even worth saving?"
"I was asked that several centuries ago…and my answer is the same as it was then," Alucard said.
"What was your answer?" J'onn asked.
"Yes, they are," Alucard answered.
"How do you know?"
"Because humans for all their faults have done the most astonishing things. Yes, they fight and kill each other for petty reasons and their lust for violence and desire to conquer all is never-ending," Alucard agreed "but they're ability to adapt and their capacity to forgive and understand makes them special. They discover and learn new things every single second of their short lives…it truly is inspiring,"
"But…. their violent nature does more harm than good," J'onn responded.
"I will not argue with that, and it is true that if humans stopped fighting each other they could create so much more and tackle any problem," Alucard agreed "But they are still learning, you and I have lived for a long time and they are like children to us….but all children grow up sooner or later,"
"I went to sleep 500yrs ago and when I woke up, I was truly amazed by how much the humans had achieved," Alucard claimed.
"Really? They are still primitives,"
"Compared to your race and other advanced spices…yes, they are. But your race was once like them, you did evolve to where your kind was without a little patience,"
"Give the humans time J'onn, they may be a bit slow, but they will get there in the end,"
"You understand them better than I do," J'onn claimed
"Well…I am not all human, so I understand," Alucard reminded "but I have also lived among them and seen firsthand what they are truly capable of,"
"I appreciate your advice but…I am sorry after tonight…I just don't see it," J'onn said.
Alucard
"May I ask you something…. Superman told me you brought the league together,"
"I did, there was an invasion, it was the same species that destroyed my world and wiped out my people," J'onn answered.
"Why did you gather everyone?" Alucard asked.
"I did not want this world to fall victim to the same fate as my own,"
"Then why did you stay? After the invasion why did you remain with the league?" Alucard asked, "what stopped you from leaving earth or even just taking on a human form and blending into society?"
"I don't know…it could be I longed for companionship after being alone for so long or I had nowhere else to go," J'onn said "But I am thinking of leaving now,"
"Is this because of tonight?"
"yes, I cannot stay if I do not believe those, I protect are worth protecting,"
"I see…I will miss you when you leave,"
"You're not going to stop me?"
"No, if you truly believe that humanity is not worth saving than that is your right," Alucard said "but perhaps it would not be a good idea to leave without telling the others,"
"They would try to stop me," J'onn claimed.
"They would yes, but you still should explain your reasons…after everything you all have been through together, you owe them that much at least," Alucard claimed.
J'onn nodded.
Alucard and J'onn continued to wander through the woods until the vampire suddenly stopped, J'onn was not paying attention and bumped into the back of him.
"What is it?" he asked.
"do you hear that?" Alucard whispered.
J'onn focused and he heard what sounded like several people trudging through the snow, it was close by and from the sounds of it they were coming closer.
"Sounds like people," J'onn whispered back.
"Agreed…we should hide," Alucard stated.
They both flew into a nearby tree and Alucard waved his hand, as he did the shadows surrounded them completely masking their presence with the darkness. J'onn looked at Alucard in confusion, but the vampire was more focused on what was below.
A few moments after the two leaders had been hidden at least a dozen humans came to the spot they had just stood, they all looked cold and tired and were wearing warm winter coats, beanies, and gloves. They were carrying torches and looked tired, cold and exhausted.
"Have you found her?" one man asked distraught.
"Not yet," another answered.
"She has to be out here somewhere," a woman tired.
"I know…it's just so cold and getting late…" the first man said worriedly.
"We'll keep looking," a woman claimed, "even if we have to search all night,"
"Right…let's try this way next,"
"What do you think they're looking for?" J'onn asked.
"Why don't you find out?" Alucard asked.
J'onn hesitated for a moment and then scanned the first man's mind, he did not need to probe too deep as his thoughts were very clear and strong.
'Please be alive…. please don't freeze, I can't bear the thought of losing my daughter,' J'onn herd.
'man I'm freezing my but off out here, It's not my kid…hell, I don't even know her or her family,' a different man's thoughts came through 'but she's probably scared out of her wits and looking for her is the right thing to do,'
'I hope she's alright, no parent should ever have to bury their own children,' a woman's voice thought.
'My own kids are safe at home in bed…. I can't help but think it could be mine out here just as easily as his,'
'I don't have a child but if I did, I wouldn't know what to do,'
'We have to find her, she's such a good girl,'
J'onn continued to listen to the thoughts of the group until they had moved on and were out of his range.
"Did you find out what are they doing out here?" Alucard asked.
"There is a lost little girl out there somewhere, they are searching for her," J'onn supplied.
"that is not good, humans do not do well in the cold…children are especially susceptible to the elements," Alucard said.
"Indeed, the night will only get colder the later it gets," J'onn agreed.
Alucard stood up and the shadows went back into place, he then took off into the sky. J'onn flew after him.
"Where are you going?" J'onn asked.
"to find that little girl," Alucard said "and bring her back to the search party,"
J'onn reached out and grabbed the vampire's arm, they stopped in mid-air.
"you don't know her though…I don't understand why you would want to find her,"
"You did not know this world when you came to stop the invasion…yet you still came and saved it," Alucard pointed out.
"A whole world was at stake, it is not the same," J'onn claimed.
"Yes, it is, that girl's father…his whole world is at stake," Alucard said "it may be smaller and he and his daughter may be the only ones in it…but that does not make it any less important,"
"You know the pain of losing your own children, would you really inflict that pain on someone else?" Alucard asked.
J'onn stared at the vampire in surprise, he did not expect that to be his reason, still, Alucard was right. Losing his wife and two children had been awful and living with that pain and loneliness after his world had been destroyed was nearly unbearable.
"No…I wouldn't," J'onn said sadly.
"Then let us help them," Alucard said and he resumed his flight.
The two flew off and Alucard kept his senses sharp, thanks to his vampiric eyes he could see every detail and kept his eyes and ears open. He was also on the lookout for wolves and other nightly predators that may have caught the girl's scent.
J'onn in the meantime kept psychically scanning as they flew over the forest, he was looking for thoughts of fear or distress. Soon he heard crying.
"I've got something…it sounds like crying," J'onn said and changed directions.
Alucard followed him and after another few minutes of flying his sensitive ears picked up small sobs.
"I hear it too, she's close," Alucard claimed.
They landed in front of a small child wearing pink snow jacked with matching gloves.
She looked up at them with fear.
"Hello, little one," J'onn said gently as he picked her up "do not be afraid, we're here to take you home,"
"R…R…Really?" the girl asked.
Alucard nodded, he took off one of his gloves and reached out, he touched her red cheeks with the back of his hand.
"She's cold…here," Alucard said and took off his coat.
"Are you sure," J'onn asked.
"I can fly without out it," Alucard assured as he wrapped it around the girl "she will need it more than me,"
Once the girl was wrapped up in the vampires' coat Alucard and J'onn took to the skies again and headed back to find the search party. They flew slightly slower so as not to scare the already frightened child and Alucard used a little magic to shield her from the wind.
They found the search party with little effort and landed in front of them, at first the search party was both shocked and scared of the pair but that quickly faded when they saw the lost girl with them.
"Daddy," the girl cried happily.
J'onn handed the child over to her father and to embrace, the father started crying happy tears as he was relieved his daughter had been found.
"Thank you, really," one of the people in the search party said.
"It's…. alright," J'onn responded.
"Whose coat is this?" another asked.
"That is mine," Alucard responded "she is very cold and needed to be kept warm,"
"I don't know who or what you are but…I can never repay this," The father claimed gratefully.
"There is no need, we merely did what anyone would do," Alucard said.
"Still if there is anything I can do,"
"May I accompany you back to your home? I do not wish for you to get lost yourselves," Alucard requested "and I will need my coat back,"
The father agreed and the search party started to leave and before he joined them Alucard pulled J'onn aside.
"Do you still think humanity is not worth saving?" Alucard asked softly.
J'onn watched the group in silence and then looked at the vampire, he shifted back into his human form and flew off into the sky at a high speed. Alucard watched him go, he then turned back to the group of humans below.
'Hmm…humans are truly an amazing spice,' Alucard thought with a smile as he followed the humans.
J'onn flew back towards Metropolis as fast as he could, he had to get back to the rest of the League as soon as possible. As he approached the outskirts of the city, he tried to contact the Justice League to find out where they were, however all he got were thoughts of combat.
J'onn knew that meant that the League was in a battle and he increased his speed, he flew over the vast city looking for the League and soon spied some smoke…that usually indicated that the heroes were in battle.
As J'onn approached he saw what appeared to be a tall grey man approaching the Justice League, the heroes looked both winded and wounded. Luthor was also nearby encouraging the grey man to finish them off.
"Yes, do it now…there weak," Luthor urged.
J'onn suddenly landed in front of the Gary humanoid, placing himself between his friends and their foe.
"J'onn…. don't," Superman warned.
The Martian, however, didn't move and the android's eyes glowed for a moment.
"No…he has J'onn's powers now too," Hawkgirl claimed.
"Damn it, know he can read out minds too," Flash said.
"You have all our powers now, use them well," J'onn advised.
"You're not going to fight me?" Amazo asked confused.
"No," J'onn said.
"then what are you going to do?" Amazo asked.
"Why don't you tell me," J'onn responded with a sly smile.
The machine's eyes glowed yellow for a moment before fading, the android looked at the League in understating and then whirled around to face Luthor.
"You…You lied to me,"
"So, you figured it out, too bad your too late," Luthor said and pulled out the kill switch.
He pressed the button and the android head exploded. Luthor smirked triumphantly but it was short-lived, and fear spread across his face as the Amazos head just reformed.
"What…impossible," Luthor gasped.
"He has all of our powers Luther…including my molecular shifting abilities," J'onn informed.
Luthor backed away in fear as the android turned on him, he knew he could not get away as it had all the leagues' powers. Amazo caught Luther and started to beat him up and rip his medical containers off him. The league got up and went to stop the android bit J'onn stopped them.
"No please have mercy," Luthor begged as he tried to shield his chest plate from the android.
"Mercy?" Amazo asked.
He took a good long look at Luthor before turning to the Justice League.
"you have nothing more to offer me…none of you do," Amazo said.
He then turned to look at the stars in the sky and started glowing a golden colour before taking to the sky and flying off heading towards the night sky.
"Should we go after him?" Hawkgirl asked.
"No need, he has no interest in us anymore," J'onn claimed.
"Where's he going?" Green Lantern asked.
"Where gods go, to the heavens," J'onn answered.
"Oh please, it's not a god…it's just a machine," Luther mocked.
"Then why do I get the feeling if that machine ever comes back you will be doing a lot of praying," Superman responded.
Luthor rolled his eyes and Batman walked up to Luthor and punched him in the face, it was enough to knock the supervillain out and Luthor crumpled to the ground.
"That was a bit excessive, I mean he was already fairly injured," Green Lantern pointed out.
"He'll live," Batman claimed coldly. he then released his grappling hook and swung off into the city.
"How did you know that would work?" Flash asked once batman had gone "Letting him take your powers I men?"
"He had doubt in his mind about Luthor's intentions. I knew once he knew the truth, he would turn on Luthor in a second,"
"Since when can you read robots' minds?" Hawkgirl asked.
"I can't, I read Luthor's mind," J'onn claimed, "he told me,"
""Huh…makes sense. I mean if that robot was smart enough not trust Luthor than maybe there is hope for it after all," Flash claimed.
The authorities arrived and Luthor was handed over to them, the Justice League than began to clean up the mess and debris from the fight and make sure no one in the surrounding buildings had been hurt and help anyone who needed it.
"Man, what a night, kind of glad we didn't call Al in," Flash said. Once they had finished helping where they could and the League was on their way back to the Javelin "Can you imagine what that Android could have taken from him,"
"Yeah that would have been very bad," Green Lantern agreed.
"Could he have even copied Alucards Magic?" Wonder Woman asked, "or his vampire powers?"
"Who knows, but the android had no trouble copying us, Hawkgirl's mace and Johns Ring. But he also took on our weakness as well as our powers, if he had copied Alcuards abilities would he have taken on his need to consume blood as well?" Superman wondered.
"Now that is a very scary thought," Flash shuddered.
"I'm more concerned if he could control that hunger for blood," Batman spoke up "Alucard's dealt with it for centuries, I doubt the Android would know how to fight off the urge to feed,"
"A Vampire robot hmm. Hey, what would we call that…A Vambot…Robo-Pire? Also, would it go after human blood or oil?" Flash asked.
"Then again if it took on the need for a source for its powers…it could be limited by it too. Just like how Alucard is limited is by how much blood he drinks," Hawkgirl contemplated, ignoring Flash.
"He overcame the weakness to Kryptonite very quickly, I have little doubt he would overcome dependence on a fuel source too, blood or otherwise," Batman pointed out.
"Yeah plus the thing didn't have a mouth so how could it feed?" John pointed out "In fact how was it talking anyway? I didn't see any speakers and it didn't have telepathy until the very end,"
"Let's not to think about that too hard," Superman advised.
Once they were done, they went their separate ways for the night with Hawkgirl, Wonder Woman and boarding a Javelin to head back to the Watchtower. Flash ran off and Batman left in his Bat plane to head back to Gotham. Hawkgirl, Wonder Woman, and J'onn were boarding the Javelin to head back to the Watchtower. Superman, however, got the Martians attention before he boarded as he wanted to ask him something.
"So…I was worried after you took off and your com went out. Where were you all night?" Superman asked.
J'onn looked at the man of steel and contemplated on how he should respond, he could tell the league about how he lost faith in humanity and how he was planning to leave because of all the bad things he heard from the peoples' minds.
But he decided against it as it was no longer important, and his thoughts went to Alucard and the little girl they had found in the woods. He made a mental note to ask Alucard if the child and her father got home safe.
He had made up his mind, he would not leave earth or the Justice League. A small smile formed on his face
"I got lost," he answered.
